Tyus “Kid Mamba” Battle is currently in Colorado Springs, CO in his quest to make the USA Basketball U16 team. Battle’s grammar school career was well documented on our site including his Diary Of A Baller column. Other Spotlight Alum in attendance include; Harry Giles, Bryant Crawford, Mustafa Heron, Derrick Jones, Devearl Ramsey, Seventh Woods and Horace Spencer. Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Tyus and wish him and all the other participants’ good luck in the tryouts. Check out highlights from his freshman year.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Walter Talley (Rens)

The 7th Grade Division of the MDC had some other players that showed promise. Here’s our second report for this grade level.

MDC 7th Grade Top Performers

Walter Tally Forward (Rens)- Tally benefitted from the improved passing skills of Nowell. He’s a force on defense and on the boards. On offense he’s still getting the kinks out but should be good to go on the high school level.

Za’eem Garrett Guard (Team Rebels)- Garrett created a little buzz with his attacking style. He doesn’t believe in dancing with the rock instead he’s always full steam ahead. He's built like a true running back.

Jake Betlow Guard (S.H.A. Elite)- The sharp shooter was on his game this weekend. He stroked 5 treys in their overtime loss to Milbank. It seems like Coach Mergin Sina has another group of good prospects on the way.

Terrence Trice Guard (Milbank)- Trice put of numbers in the past with Riverside now he returned with “The Bank”. He averaged 15 points a game including a 19 marker outing in their win versus Mass Shooting Stars.

Dallas Watson Guard (Milbank)- This kid continues to show improvement every time he steps on the floor. His knack to score stands out along with his breakdown ability off the dribble.

Maurice Works Guard (Team DEMI)- Works put in some work which helped his team advance from pool play. He averaged double digits and his big game was a 20 point effort in their loss versus the Rens.

Shandon Brown Guard (Team DEMI)- Brown roams the backcourt with Works and went off against NWK. The superb ball handler scorched the Brick City boys for 26 points in their pool play victory.

Basketball Spotlight MDC Highlights: Markquis Nowell (Rens)

Name: Markquis Nowell

AAU Team: Rens

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2018

Breakdown: This weekend Markquis Nowell continued to show he’s probably the most exciting 7th Grade player to watch on the Spotlight circuit. One game he pumped in 30 against NWK but also showed off his passing ability against Team DEMI and New Heights. He’s always worth the price of admissions.

Basketball Spotlight MDC Highlights: Armoni "Live Wire" Sexton (Playaz - 7th Grade)

Armoni "Live Wire" Sexton

Each year a player uses the MDC as their coming out party and in 2014 Armoni Sexton was that guy. The Mr. Memorial Day Award winner gave us a taste of all his talents in full speed. He capped off his memorable weekend in explosive fashion with a thunderous dunk. It’s only right that his new name becomes Armoni “Live Wire” Sexton. It's potential is crazy. He could be a Top 10 player in this class when it's all said and done.

Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week: Keith Williams (New Heights)

Keith Williams (New Heights)

The Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week goes to Keith Williams of New Heights. Williams led New Heights to the Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Championship against the top teams in the region. Congrats to Keith and remember to continue to work hard because this is just the beginning.

Basketball Spotlight MDC Highlights: Cameron "The Prince" Reddish (Team Final - 7th Grade)

Cameron "The Prince" Reddish

Team Final has a budding super-star in this kid if he continues to work hard. Therefore let’s now introduce Cameron Reddish AKA “The Prince” because he’s next in line for the throne. Stay tuned because we are just getting started with our coverage of the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Orange Division Recap: New Heights Crashes The Party!

New Heights Takes Gold To NYC

New Heights simply came to the MDC and bullied their way to the Gold Ball. In the finals they defeated Metro Flyers 66-52 to win the Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Orange Division Champions. Congrats to New Heights for winning the title and gaining entry to the Grand Finale.

Mr. Memorial Day – Keith Williams (New Heights)
Williams went to work at the MDC like he was D-Wade. The strong combo guard attacked the relentlessly, showed off his hops and played lockdown defense. He leaves all the glitz and glamour for others while tormenting defenses with strength and precision. He definitely deserved the MVP Award.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Blue Division Championship Recap: NBA Storms Through MDC!

NBA Wins Title Easily

Nations Basketball Academy stormed through the MDC as they defeated Boston Spartans 50-30 to win the Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Blue Division Championship.

Co- Mr. Memorial Day- Mikey Grande and Matt Ciaccio (NBA) The inside/outside combination were too much for anyone in this division to handle. Their play helped the NJ squad to a mercy rule championship victory.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Blue Division Champonship Recap: Boston Spartans Strike!

Boston Spartans Are Champions

The Boston Spartans proved their trip was worth the money by defeating the Brooklyn Badgers 55-48 to win the Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Blue Division Championship. Congrats to the Spartans and we look forward to seeing a lot of them on the Spotlight circuit next year.

Mr. Memorial Day- Dominic Jones (Boston Spartans)
Jones was the unanimous selection for Mr. Memorial Day which means he dominated the competition all weekend. His versatility and athleticism stands out and we look forward to watching him develop.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Orange Division Championship Recap: Playaz Just Too Much!

Playaz Grab Gold Ball

The Playaz Basketball Club continued their impressive play by defeating Team Final 60-43 to win Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Orange Division Championship. Congrats to the Playaz and wewish them luck the rest of the season.

Mr. Memorial Day - Armoni Sexton (Playaz)
Sexton turned his game up at the MDC. The lanky forward was like the Energizer Bunny on both ends of the floor. He blocked shots, rebounded and moved his feet well on defense. On offense he finished well and was constantly on the move. His motor is extremely high and once the game slows down to him we will have a scary prospect on our hands. Mark my words.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 6th Grade Blue Division Championship Recap: Philly Pride Cruises!

Philly Pride Takes Crown

Philly Pride used a blitzing style to run past Nations Basketball Academy 45-24 to win the Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade MDC Blue Division Championship. The Pride will be a tough to team to beat next season as they move over to the Orange Division.

Mr. Memorial Day- Hakim Hart Jr. (Philly Pride)
The coach’s son stepped up again and helped the Philly boys when the title. His silky smooth handle and deep range is something to watch for a kid this young. Hart seems to be another Philly guard on the way with plenty of game. We have two more years to watch him develop.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 6th Grade Orange Division Championship Recap: Team Nelson 3-Peats

Team Nelson Stacks Another Gold Ball

Team Nelson kept their MDC streak going by defeating 6th Man Warriors 49-42 to win the Basketball Spotlight MDC 6th Grade Championship. This is Team Nelson’s 3rd consecutive MDC crown. Now they enter the Grand Finale as the #1 seed.

Mr. Memorial Day Mark Bradshaw (Team Nelson)
Mr. Bradshaw was at it again during the MDC. The lefty was brilliant during their semifinal against the Rens and also helped his boys take the Gold Ball during the finals. He played the passing lanes well and exploded to the hole for buckets.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 5th Grade Recap: CJ Hawks Win Double OT Thriller!

CJ Hawks Take Gold Ball

In the best game of the weekend CJ Hawks defeated Nations Basketball Academy 65-60 in double overtime. These two teams battled hard to the very end and gave the fans a treat. Congrats to the CJ Hawks for winning the title and we look forward to seeing them at the Grand Finale.

Mr. Memorial Day- Tomas Bublis (CJ Hawks)
Bublis is a dedicated I’m Possible trainee and he should off the skills at the MDC. In the finals the lefty proved to be tough to show down as he poured in 22 points in the double OT victory. We will see him in two weeks as he tries to carry them to the Grand Finale title.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 4th Grade Championship Recap: Young Playaz Win Title

Playaz Get It Done

The Playaz Basketball Club used a balanced attack to defeat the CJ Hawks 33-23 and win the Basketball Spotlight MDC 4th Grade Championship. Congratulations to the Playaz Basketball Club and it looks like they have a bright future with this bunch.

Mr. Memorial Day- DiAndre South (Playaz)
I got a glimpse of the youngster over the weekend and it seems the Playaz have another young stud guard on the horizon. Though he’s a 4th grader he already possesses flair and a unique feel for the game. This kid can go.

Diary of a Baller: Azar “A.Z.” Swain, (Boston, MA) Entry #11

Azar Swain (Student-Athlete)

What Up Diary, Today is Monday. It felt good to be crowned State Champs this weekend, but the journey is only beginning. This weekend is the Basketball Spotlight Memorial Day Classic, and I am excited for it. It feels like forever since I have played in a Basketball Spotlight tournament because I was absent in Atlantic City. This tournament will be the first time BBallSpotlight and others will be able to see the “X-Clan” in action. It should be a good one. I’m always nervous for big games but as soon as the game starts I’m fine. Today was a rough day though. Basketball practice wasn’t good, my school day went by slowly, and it was burning hot outside. Overall, it was a bad day. I really hope that tomorrow will be a good day. Good Night Diary.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 6th Grade Preview: Let The Games Begin!

Can Team Nelson 3-Peat At The MDC?

The 6th Grade Division at the MDC is loaded with some of the top teams on the East Coast. Here’s our look at who will be in the building chasing the Gold Ball.

6th Grade Preview

Team Nelson: The #1 team in the region will be looking to collect their third consecutive Gold Ball. They have been on a hot streak lately and should be looked at one of the favorites.

CIA Bounce: The Canada crew returns to collect another banner. They won the Clash For The Cup in impressive fashion. I wonder if there’s anyone that can match up with this loaded squad.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Preview: Who's Ready For The Throne?

Can The Playaz Step In The Spotlight?

The 7th Grade Division will give us a chance to see a new champion at the MDC. I’m looking forward to see which squad is willing to step up and take the Gold Ball. Here’s a breakdown of the 7th Grade teams making the trip to Neptune.

7th Grade Preview

Playaz: PBC would probably have to be the favorite as they have been playing some great ball lately. Now they will have to put everything together to take the Gold ball back to Paterson. The heat is on and we will see where they stand.

Mass Shooting Stars: MSS recently won a tournament featuring some of the same teams at the MDC. Therefore this well coached squad can also be looked at as one of the favorites. The Gold Ball is for the taking if they are willing to go get it.

Basketball Spotight MDC 8th Grade Preview: The Deck Is Stacked!

Can Team IZOD Hold On To The #1 Spot?

The 8th Grade Orange Division should be ready to explode in Neptune, NJ. It’s stacked from top to bottom and there’s nowhere to hide. Here’s a look at some of the top teams and players at the MDC.

8th Grade Preview

Team IZOD: The region’s #1 squad is coming off a NJ State crown and will be looking to capture another Spotlight title. I said in the beginning of the season that they had the experience to win it all and now it seems like they are on course. They have a tough pool with a Sunday showdown with Rens.

CBC: The “Money Team” said they came down just to prove they are still the best team in the region. They lost a few players but with the Martin brothers still intact they are capable of running the table. I look forward to their Sunday matchup with Metro Flyers led by Nate Pierre Louis and Aaron Clarke.

His play earned him the nickname “Mayweather” as pound for pound the best pg in the land. Now he will lead his troops to battle at the MDC in search for the Gold Ball. Check out his highlights from the Clash For The Cup.

Diary of a Baller: Azar “A.Z.” Swain (Entry #10)

Todd Quarles (Director) and Azar

What Up Diary, Today is Monday. It was hard for me to get up this morning after such a relaxing weekend. Today, I also had a baseball game. Surprisingly, I was excited for the game. I realized why baseball is fun to me now. It’s not because I love the game of baseball or that I am good at it, but because of the kids on my team. They humbled me over the course of this year’s baseball season. They have helped me recognize that I need to try things to fully understand if I like or dislike them. It has been a great season so far, and the transition into high school next year means leaving most of these kids. I will see a lot of them around but it probably won’t be the same as it is right now. It’s sad to think about it because I have learned so much from all of the middle school kids throughout the pass 2 years. I am going to miss them. Later Diary.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team IZOD: TI takes over the #1 spot after winning the NJ AAU 8th Grade State crown. Now they will try to hold onto their new spot at the MDC.

2. CBC: The “Money Team” will be returning to the MDC very thirsty. They are out to prove they are still the best 8th Grade squad in the region.

3. Playaz: PBC lost to Team IZOD in the NJ State tournament. They also will be entering the dangerous MDC.

4. DC Assault: DCA will not be entering the MDC but we wish them luck the rest of the season.

5. Rens: Rens continue to be dominating at times. The MDC will be a huge test for these boys.

6. CIA Bounce: CIA Bounce recently won the Playaz tournament. We will try to monitor their movement.

7. Milbank: After making it to the finals of the AC Showcase. “The Bank” recently won a tournament in NYC.

8. Expressions: The new look Expressions will be bringing the noise to the MDC. We will really see what they are made of.

9. Team Final: TF moves up one spot after winning the MA Regionals in impressive fashion. Now they will be trying to play the spoiler at the MDC.

 1. Metro Sixers: MS remains #1 and are in a good position to win the Grand Finale Championship. The really showed their strength this year.

2. Team IZOD: The Supreme Team won the NJ AAU 8th Grade Div. 2 title. Now they will head to New Orleans during the Memorial Day weekend. We will probably see them again at the Grand Finale.

3. DC Assault: DCA had a rough time at a recent tournament in NY. I hope they are regrouping for their event this upcoming weekend.

4. CIA Bounce: Word is that Bounce is the best team in the country. They might qualify for the Grand Finale. If so we hope they return to NJ.

5. New Rens: This is really the tale of two teams. First they win King James Classic then they have a bad weekend in NY. Let’s see which team shows up for the MDC.

6. Mass Shooting Stars: MSS recently won a tournament in NY but came up short in their own state tournament.

7. Playaz: PBC jumps into the Top 10 and something tells me they will continue to climb. Can’t wait to see them at the MDC.

8. Wall 2 Wall: A player movement might have dealt a blow to this squad. But we will see what they have once they enter the MDC.

9. Team Takeover: TT fought hard this year and we wish them luck in the AAU Nationals and the rest of the season.

10. ECE: The Delaware boys return to the Top 10 after a remarkable showing at the MID Atlantic AAU Regionals.

1. Team Nelson: TN takes over the #1 spot after defeating Team IZOD in the Mid Atlantic AAU Championship. These two teams are on another collision course at the MDC. Should be a thriller.

2. Team IZOD: TI lost to Team Nelson on Sunday and will be looking for a rematch at the MDC. Don’t count this team out of the Grand Finale Championship race.

3. Metro Flyers: MF won the NJ State crown and will have a chance to jump into the two 2 when the MDC rolls around. They are a virtual lock for the Grand Finale.

4. ETU Select: ETU will enter the MDC and chase their first Spotlight crown. The tourney is jammed packed so they will definitely get tested.

5. CIA Bounce: Now things get very interesting as CIA will make an appearance at the MDC. Can the Canada boys snatch another title? We shall see.

6. 6th Man Warriors: The Warriors recently won the VA State crown. Now they will be working to get to that Spotlight banner.

7. Team Takeover: We probably saw the last of this group this season. They gave us some good memories. We wish them luck the rest of the way.

8. MJ Mavericks: The Cinderella squad might be seating out the MDC. They were a joy to watch this season.

9. Team RIO: RIO will be sporting their new threads at the MDC. Hopefully they will give them some good fortune in these troubled waters.

10. RJS: The RJS will have to fight hard at the MDC to remain in the Top 10. Good luck.

4. Team Takeover: TT will try to get keep their hot play going deep into the summer. I like some of their pieces and look forward to seeing them next season.

5. CJ Hawks: The Hawks lost to KSK in the NJ State finals. Next up for them is the MDC where they will chase the Gold Ball.
