Harris Headed To The Patrick School

Jamir Harris Will Be A Celtic

Jamir “Terminator” Harris has decided to attend The Patrick School. Harris known from his young days with the famed Team Battle squad stormed back on the AAU scene this season with the Playaz Basketball Club. He led the Playaz to a final four finish at the Tip Off Classic and their first Spotlight championship during the Clash For The Cup. He’s currently the leading candidate for the Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Player Of The Year.

Jamir’s father Laquan Harris was confident in the choice of the Patrick School. “We wanted to find a school where the coach could teach Jamir the tools he needed for the next level and we believe Coach Chevannes is one of the best in developing players especially guards” he said. Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Harris on his decision and wish him the best in the future. Harris will be returning to the Spotlight with the Playaz at the MDC.

Heroic Alum Johnson Selects College

Matthew Johnson

Basketball Spotlight would like to a special congratulation to Alum Matthew Johnson. Johnson has chosen to attend the University of Tampa next year. Johnson played on the Basketball Spotlight circuit with the Playaz Basketball Club while winning POY honors in 2008.

Johnson gained just as much notoriety off the floor by helping to rescue his older brother during a drowning accident in June 2008 and by returning to basketball after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in May 2011 which was supposed to end his young career. The fact that he fought through the diagnosed and was able to get a scholarship shows his a tough kid and there’s a higher power. Congrats Matt and that comes from my heart, I’m so proud of you.

Diary Of A Baller: Azar Swain (Boston, MA) Entry #7

Azar At Boston Marathon Memorial

Today is Monday. This week started off easy with a light day of school and workouts in Boston from 6-8 with Coach Boswell. I want to talk about Nutrition, and how it impacts athletes. When I was a younger I ate everything. Everything really started to kind of change around the 6th grade. I started thinking about what I ate and when I ate. For all of the people reading this, I want to tell you that Nutrition is very important to the success of an athlete. If you see documentaries or a TV show on NBATV or ESPN, you will see how athletes eat. Looking back, I remember one specific time. I was watching a training camp on the New York Knicks, and when they went to a team lunch, they all were eating salads, pasta or baked chicken. It had never occurred to me how else athletes get their bodies besides working out. That right there is when I started to focus on what I ate. I started trying to get fit, and stronger. I started to see a difference in your performance as an athlete. Peace Diary.

From The Director's Desk Feat: Terrell Myers (We R 1)

Terrell Myers (We R 1)

Terrell Myers and Matt Pauls joined forces to put bring together some of the top talent in the tri-state area. We sat down with Myers to get his take on the program.

Coaches Corner: Topic #1 Players Bouncing

Basketball Spotlight understands one of the toughest jobs in this youth basketball is being an AAU coach. It’s definitely a labor of love because many coaches log long hours while dedicating time and sometimes money to their team’s success. Therefore we decided to bring back Coaches Corner so these guys could have a forum to express their opinions on several matters.

Topic #1
How does it feel when a player you have developed over the years decides to leave your program for another squad?

Chuck Rockmore (Coach Wall 2 Wall 7th Grade)
“After you put in time and hard work, it feels like getting punched in the face by Mike Tyson.”

Franz Pierre Louis (Former Coach IZOD)
“I truly don’t have a problem when a player believes it’s time to leave the nest. Sometimes it’s important for their maturation process. My advice to many families is just don’t burn bridges because the basketball community is very small and you never know who can help or hurt your child in the future.”

Robert Turner (Coach ECE 7th Grade)
“When it happens the first time, it’s painful and catches you off guard because it’s normally your very best player. After being in the AAU world for a while you realize it’s a part of the game. In the end you hope and pray it’s not just all about basketball and the new situation helps the player development into a better person as well.”

Terrence “Munch” Williams (Coach Team Scan)
“It feels like the player never understood the larger picture and the program’s goal of getting him a free education has now ended.”

Joe Stein (Coach Jersey Force 7th Grade)
“It’s a feeling of betrayal that stings deep, you put all that time into them on and off the floor. You make him a better player and person for someone else.”

Mike Richardson (Coach Playtime 4th Grade)
“I never give it a thought because it happens so often but it hurts to see a kid p leave before you are done teaching and developing him.”

Reggie Hatchett (Coach CBC 8th Grade)
“I feel bad when a kid leaves for adult reasons. I hate when politics affect what kids do. Wish we could keep kids separate for those types of issues.”

Melton's Mailbag: 7th Grade Nats, Harge, and More

The Melton Mailbag will contain 4 questions from you the fans that we will post and answer on our page. We will pick the four questions we feel are the best. To send questions to Melton Mailbag email me at basketballspotlight@hotmail.com.

Sam From Memphis, TN wrote: Mike I can’t wait for the AAU 7th Grade Nationals this summer, I know you saw most of the top teams. Who is your pick to win it all?

MM: Well, Sam I have seen some of the top teams from this age group including DC Assault, We All Can Go All Stars, Georgia United and Kentucky Spiece. But in my honest opinion, I really think Team IZOD AKA “Supreme Team” has a chance to cut down the net. They have only lost a few games this year and were never at full strength in those losses including a two point loss to DCA. I think WACG will be a totally different team without the services of Marvin Bagley. Some might think I’m being biased but I really can see them winning it all.

Paul From Salisbury, NC wrote: Mike, how good is Damon Harge? I see him ranked high and even #1 on a few sites?

MM: Paul, I believe Harge is a very talented point guard. He exhibits the skills and speed to be an elite recruit one day. In terms of his ranking it’s kind of tough to gauge because I haven’t seen him play much against his class therefore it’s tough to see where he falls. But I think he will land in the top 25 of most list.

Bradford From Eastern, PA wrote: Mike how do you explain the Northeast 6th Grade Teams not having any success during the first session of the new national youth league?

MM: Bradford, I think they are playing at a disadvantage because most of the other teams are pulling players from a larger market. I think if it was maybe two teams from the Northeast instead of six the teams would be stronger and match up better.

June From Dover, DE wrote: Mike MCB Elite has been balling recently and still haven’t cracked your top 10. Can you explain this?
MM: June I do see the success of MCB Elite and they made some noise at the AC Showcase. If they have another good showing at the MDC they have a great chance of cracking the Top 10.

Lenny Cooke Movie Trailer: Too Much Too Soon!

In 2001, Lenny Cooke was the most hyped high school basketball player in the country, ranked above future greats LeBron James, Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. In an era when high school stars were forgoing college hoops in favor of the potential multi-million dollar contracts promised in the NBA draft, Lenny was supposed to be the next superstar. He had the world at his fingertips. But over a decade later, while his peers are taking home MVP awards and championship trophies, Lenny has never played a minute in the NBA. What went wrong?

Wow whenever this movie is released I will be the first one in line. I think this story needs to be seen by every young basketball player out there. This could become one of the most important basketball movies created.

Zach Gunn Still Smooth As Can Be!

Zach Gunn is an 8th Grade swing man for the famed Indy Hoosiers AAU squad. His smoothness and scoring ability has to remind you of a smaller Chris Mullin. His also possesses a high basketball IQ and some sneaky athleticism. Watch out for this kid down the road.

Introducing Terrell Coleman Class of 2017 (Atlanta, GA)

Terrell Coleman is a 8th Grade Combo guard that rocks with Atlanta Celtics. He’s physically opposing and has some athleticism to go along with his game. Coleman should be in among the top ranked players when several list come out in the summer.

Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week: Jamal Whittlesey (ECE)

Jamal Whittlesey (ECE)

The Basketball Spotlight Player of the Week goes to Jamal Whittlesey of ECE 7th Grade squad, he led team to 3-0 record in the opening rounds of the Mid Atlantic Districts. Jamal scored 20pts, 18pts, and 15pts in the 3 games played. Congrats Jamal and keep up the good work this is only the beginning.

Diary Of A Baller: Azar "A.Z. Swain (Boston, MA) Entry #6

What Up Diary, I wanted to change it up a little bit this week. I say that I am the definition of a student-athlete a lot because I feel like I am. If I say that I’m in the gym working hard almost everyday, I am. If I say that I’m doing homework until 12 am and up at 4:30 am, I am. All of that plus trying to maintain a social life does not always balance each other out. When I say I don’t have the time to talk to friends, I mean it. It’s nearly impossible to be your best in school, in athletics, and be the best friend. Here is the result of my work in the classroom:

Spotlight Alum: Seventh Woods = WOW

I remember Seventh Woods played in the MDC as a 10 year old for the Columbia Slammers and Perry Dozier Sr. said “this is the kid he might turn out to be the best in South Carolina”. Woods continued to progress and now his game seems to be off the charts. I must admit I thought he would be good but he might have outgrown my assessment. This highlight tape is amazing! WOW.

Clash Of The Titans: Riley Vs. Ayton (Cast Your Vote)

The last few years Cody Riley has been the undisputed #1 Player in the Class of 2017 but now 6’10 DeAndre Ayton has emerged on the scene. Some analyst feel the spot is still Cody’s to loss while others think Ayton potential is too much to not be #1. Now it’s your chance to be the analyst in this edition of Clash Of The Titans. Who’s really the #1 Player in the Class of 2017? Cast Your Vote!

Cody Riley is the #1 8th grade player in the nation, and with all due respect to all the other young phenoms he rightfully deserves that spot. After watching him play in several games, I saw very few weaknesses and an incredible amount of skill. Riley has a tremendous upside standing 6'8.

DeAndre Ayton is a 6'10 8th grader with unbelievable skills, body control, and potential. DeAndre Ayton has made incredible strides over the last year, gaining confidence and skills that have made him an amazing prospect. If he keeps progressing he has a chance to a big time stud down the road.

Basketball Spotlight Exclusive: Coach Hatchett Discusses "Money Team" Departures!

Money Team Coach Reggie Hatchett

This season was supposed to be the “Money Team’s year to achieve a few goals. One was to the win the Grand Finale and also to chase an AAU National title. After the Tip Off Classic these dreams seemed reality especially with the additions of Jermaine Samuels and Tristan Patterson. But after they won that title and the Funsport championship things changed. Tristan left to join the Playaz and later on Jermaine Samuels and Azar Swain went home to Expressions while Aaron Clarke returned to team up with Nate Pierre-Louis for Metro Flyers. We contacted CBC skipper Reggie Hatchet to get his take on the situation.

Video Profile: Jahvon Quinerly (Team IZOD)

Jahvon Quinerly (Team IZOD)

Jahvon Quinerly has used this season to take his game to another level. The lead guard for the Supreme Team showed off his skills all season including leading his squad to championships at the Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic, AGame Super Shootout, X- Factor Invitational, and NJ AAU State crown. He’s currently a finalist for Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Player Of The Year. Check out his hot mixtape.

One On One Feat. Justin Moore (Metro Sixers)

The point guard’s job is the dictate the flow of the game and quarterback the team. Justin Moore did just that while leading the Metro Sixers to an AC Showcase championship and #1 spot in the Basketball Spotlight rankings. We reached out to the smooth point guard and here’s what he had to say.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Now that the AC Showcase is in the books. We have prepared our 3rd Quarter Report. The next stop on the Road to the Grand Finale is the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Team To Beat: Playaz
They were idle during the AC Showcase but they still seem like the favorite to take home the title at Trenton Catholic on June 16th. They will use the MDC has a tune up.

Surprise Team: Team IZOD
IZOD got things together right in time to make a run for the Grand Finale crown. They have a few players with final four experiences from last season so that could be a huge advantage.

Darkhorse: CBC
Player defections have this team a little undermanned but they are hungry. Don’t be surprised if they come out swinging once they reach the final four. They could have a Spotlight story to tell if they win it all. Don’t count them out!

Player Of The Year Leading Candidate: Jamir Harris (Playaz)
The “Terminator” still has the edge for POY. No one else has shown to be that dominate while also leading their team to victories. Heading into the MDC it’s his trophy to lose. Coach Of The Year Leading Candidate:

Luis Delgado (Team IZOD)
Delgado had a chance of winning the award last year but it slipped through his fingers. A serious run at the MDC and a Grand Finale showing might get him over the top this year.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Now that the AC Showcase is in the books. We have prepared our 3rd Quarter Report. The next stop on the Road to the Grand Finale is the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Team To Beat: Metro Sixers
They have a MIT and AC Showcase title under their belt and frankly they are the team everyone hates to play. They will make things very interesting for the Grand Finale final four.

Surprise Team: Philly Pride
After winning the AC Showcase 7th Grade Blue Division crown the Pride resembles the Wall 2 Wall crew of last year. Now they will make their Orange division debut at the MDC. This is where things get real.

Darkhorse: Team IZOD
If the “Supreme Team” was full strength they probably would have added a few more titles. The Grand Finale is 60 days away which gives them time to lick their wounds and give it a run for the crown.

Player Of The Year Leading Candidate: Brandon Slater (Metro Sixers)
Slater made his move for the trophy by winning the MVP of the MIT and leading his squad to the AC Showcase crown. The lefty has proven to be a fluid scorer and big game performer.

Coach Of The Year Leading Candidate: Aaron Dread (Metro Sixers)
Dread’s concept of team first has his boys winning some big tournaments. He presses the right buttons and remains calm when coaching on the sidelines. His team inherits his demeanor and never panics on the floor.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Now that the AC Showcase is in the books. We have prepared our 3rd Quarter Report. The next stop on the Road to the Grand Finale is the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Team To Beat:
Team IZOD TI hasn’t lost convincingly enough to be knocked from the throne. I think when they are clicking on all cylinders they are still the best team in the region.

Surprise Team: Team Nelson
I knew TN would get it together but I didn’t think it would be this quick. They have put themselves in a great position to repeat as Grand Finale champions.

Darkhorse: ETU Select
A finals appearance at the AC Showcase and a PV regional title shows this group is capable of crashing the Grand Finale party. We will see how things shape up after the MDC.

Player Of The Year Leading Candidates: AJ Hoggard (Team IZOD) & Mikeal Jones (Team Nelson)
I think Hoggard has emerged as they key component to IZOD’s championship success. His play making ability against strong defenders is what separates him for his peers. Jones is the best 6th Grade prospect in the region and if he turns it on and carries Team Nelson to another Grand Finale crown the trophy could be his.

Coach Of The Year Leading Candidate: AJ Gaffney (Team IZOD)
Gaffney had the most pressure while forming this squad and he has proven to get the job done most of the time. He has learned how to handle egos and still get the best out of his players.

Basketball Spotlight 5th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Now that the AC Showcase is in the books. We have prepared our 3rd Quarter Report. The next stop on the Road to the Grand Finale is the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight 5th Grade 3rd Quarter Report

Team To Beat: NYC Gauchos
It’s simple; they entered two Spotlight tournaments and took pictures with two banners. When strike fear in opposing teams like the Choz of yester year. Right now they are the favored to win the Grand Finale crown.

Surprise Team: RIP City
The PA squad showed serious moxie by making it to the AC Showcase final four in their first Spotlight event of the year. I thought they would be a little rusty for the competition but they proved me wrong

Darkhorse: Team Glory
Winning the PV Championship shows this team can get things down on the 5th Grade level. They are capable of showing up at the Grand Finale and taking home the championship.

Player Of The Year Leading Candidate: Zion Harmon (Team Glory)
The 4th Grader might be the first player in Spotlight history to win POY for an older age but it is what it is. The combo guard plays better when the stage is bright and right now few can argue with his success.

Coach Of The Year Leading Candidate: Tommie Swinton (Gauchos)
Swinton brought his troops to the shark infested AC Showcase and had them swim through like Olympic champions. His hardnosed approach keeps his young boys focused in the task ahead.

Diary of a Baller: Azar “A.Z.” Swain (Boston, MA) Entry #5

 Azar Wins Title With X-Clan

Good Morning Diary, Today is Sunday and it’s championship morning. As usual, when it comes to tournament weekends, I am very excited. In the championship, we faced BABC. BABC is another Nike EYBL team, and they have a good reputation around the Massachusetts and New England area. It was our team’s first tournament since the move to Expressions Elite, and it was good one! We ended up beating BABC 60-18 to win the Zero Gravity Championship. I’m starting to like my new team. The chemistry is getting there, and everything should fall right into place. Anyways, after we won, Coach took the team and our families out to eat. We ate and talked, and tried to pick up some good chemistry as a team. Since I didn’t have school the following day, that night I did a little bit of homework and just relaxed. I miss playing already, but we will be back at it next weekend. I am sad about one thing though. My girl, Skylar Diggins, and Notre Dame lost to Connecticut in the Women’s National Final Four. She has a bright future in front of her, so I’m not worried one bit. Today was a good day, and it was the start of a new beginning with the Expressions Elite Family. Goodnight Diary!

Expressions Elite Introduces The "X-Clan" (8th Grade Squad)

The X-Clan Has Arrived

Expressions Elite has become the hot squad in the New England. They are fresh off signing a contract with Nike to participate in the EYBL. Now with their high school situation in control they are now beefing up their middle school programs. Director Todd Quarles went out seeking the best for their 8th grade program. He eventually brought over talented Jermaine Samuels and Azar Swain from CBC. “The goal was to hand pick players with not only the best talent but also good character. Development takes time that’s why we are in the gym drilling these guys three times a week. We are just trying to get them better”said Quarles.

The 8th Grade Top 10 had a little movement but nothing drastic. Please remember these rankings are just our opinion and should be taken as such.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Playaz: PBC remains in the top spot and will be returning for the MDC. They are in the driver’s seat for the #1 seed at the Grand Finale final four.

2. CBC: The “Money Team” lost a few pieces but still managed to make it to the final four of the AC Showcase. They are still in contention for the Grand Finale final four but must get it done with that loaded roster of the past.

3. Team IZOD: TI jumps to #3 after winning the AC Showcase. They are now in position to make a run at the Grand Finale banner. Hopefully we will see them at the MDC.

4. DC Assault: DCA won the PV 8th Grade AAU Championship. I think we have seen this last of this group this year. They gave us some great memories.

5. New Rens: One of the hottest teams will be returning for the MDC. They will be looking to spoil the party and snatch the banner.

6. CIA Bounce: Bounce showed good during their Spotlight appearances. We wish them luck the rest of their way on the circuit.

7. Team Nelson: TN got knocked out of the quarterfinals of the AC Showcase. We are waiting on word if they will be attending the MDC.

8. Milbank: “The Bank” cracks the Top 10 after making it to the finals of the AC Showcase. A serious run at the MDC might catapult them into the Grand Finale final four.

9. Expressions: The new look Expressions will be making their Spotlight debut at the MDC. A deep run might give them the back door key to the Grand Finale.

10. Team Final: TF was idle during the AC Showcase but will be back in action during the MDC. Their Grand Finale hopes are gone but a championship banner would still be a good look.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The 7th Grade Top 10 has a new #1 and some other movement. Please remember these rankings are just our opinion and should be taken as such.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Metro Sixers: Metro Sixers jump to #1 after winning the loaded AC Showcase. They have shown to be the most consistent squad on the 7th Grade circuit. They are in great position for the Grand Finale final four. It was a joy watching them.

2. DC Assault: DCA moves up to #2 after making it to the finals of the AC Showcase. They also won the AAU PV title. They have a serious rivalry with neighboring Metro Sixers.

3. Team IZOD: The injury bug caused the “Supreme Team” to have a tough weekend at the AC Showcase. Once they return to full strength they should have a great chance to win the Grand Finale crown.

4. CIA Bounce: Bounce gave us some good moments this season and hopefully they will return to our circuit next fall.

5. Wall 2 Wall: The Allentown crew had a good showing at the AC Showcase before running into the National Champs. They are a dark horse for the Grand Finale crown so don’t sleep on them.

6. New Rens: NR had a tough time in AC. After being caught in the Super Pool they had an unexpected early exit in bracket play. I think they can rebound during the MDC.

7. Team Takeover: TT made a splash at the AC Showcase by making it to the final four. They had a tough loss to DC Assault but they did fight hard.

8. Mass Shooting Stars: They had their moments at the AC Showcase. Hopefully they can advance further during the MDC.

9. Gauchos: We haven’t seen the Choz in a while. We will be reaching out to them for their participation in the MDC.

10. Philly Pride: PP cracks the Top 10 after winning the Blue Division crown at the AC Showcase. They are a rugged bunch.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The 6th Grade Top 10 had some movement but pretty much remained intact. The rankings are listed below and please remember this is just our opinion and should be taken as such.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team IZOD: IZOD fell in the final four at the AC Showcase in a hard fought game against Team Nelson. Their overall body of work keeps them at the top spot but the gap is closing quickly. They will have a chance to spread the lead at the MDC.

2. Team Nelson: TN moves up the #2 after winning the stacked AC Showcase. Next up is the MDC where they will try to repeat as champions. They are also in great shape to return to the Grand Finale final four.

3. Metro Flyers: The Flyers lost in the final four at the AC Showcase. They have shown great promise but still haven’t captured their first banner. They are in contention for the Grand Finale final four and can better their seeding spot at the MDC.

4. ETU Select: The PV boys move up 3 spots after making it to the finals of the AC Showcase and winning the PV AAU Regional crown. Next up is the MDC where they will try to win the Gold Ball. They are also in contention for the Grand Finale.

5. Team Takeover: TT pulled out of the AC Showcase but had a good showing at the PV AAU Regional while taking home the silver medal. Hopefully we will see this bunch at the MDC.

6. CIA Bounce: I haven’t seen the Canada crew in a while. But they can always say they have a Spotlight banner. They won the Clash.

7. 6th Man Warriors: The Warriors showed tremendous heart this year. They gave us some great moments and hopefully they will return to the Spotlight soon.

8. MJ Mavericks: The holiday caused this tough group to take off the AC Showcase. Now they will be back into the heat during the MDC. Can’t wait to see them in action.

9. Team RIO: They will be returning to the Spotlight for the MDC. This is always a dangerous group.

10. RJS: The South Jersey crew cracks the Top 10 after winning the Blue Division of the AC Showcase. Now at the MDC they must move over with the big boys.

The 5th Grade Top 10 Rankings had some shake ups and a few new names. The rankings are listed below and please remember this is just our opinion and should be taken as such.

Basketball Spotlight 5th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Gauchos: The Choz jumped back to #1 after running through the AC Showcase which featured serious competition. They came to play in America’s Playground and got things done. They are well on their way for a Grand Finale final four appearance.

2. Team Glory: TG didn’t make a burst in AC but rebounded and won the Potomac Valley AAU Championship. They should have enough points to qualify for the Grand Finale final four.

3. CJ Hawks: The Hawks rested during the AC Showcase and concentrated on the NJ AAU State tournament. They are scheduled to appear at the MDC.

4. Team Takeover: TT made it to the finals of the AC Showcase before falling to the Gauchos. They had a great run during their Spotlight appearances.

5. RIP City: The PA boys showed they are still good to go by advancing to the final four of the AC Showcase. This was their Spotlight debut this year and they did work before they ran into the hot Gauchos in the semifinals.

6. Leesburg Basketball: These boys made their Spotlight debut and made it to the final four through rough terrain. They showed they were ready to rumble.

7. Team Phenom: The Philly boys ran into a tough pool during the AC Showcase. Hopefully they can have a much better showing at the MDC.

8. KSK: King Street Kings ran into some tough competition during the AC Showcase. Hopefully we will get another look at this bunch soon.

9. Nation Basketball Academy: NBA made a name at the AC Showcase by walking away with the Blue Division Championship. Now as they enter the MDC they must move over to the Orange with the other heavy weights.

10. Team DEMI: The Boston squad dropped to #10 after a tough weekend in AC. Hopefully they can bounce back with a better showing at the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight Exclusive: Cody Riley Receives "The Stamp"

Cody Riley

Two years ago Cali Styles stormed through the Clash For The Cup while winning the 6th and 8th Grade Divisions. One common factor on both teams was the dominant play of Cody Riley. The then 6’7 forward was too much to handle especially on his grade level. Since then Riley has shown his dominance all over the country in camps and tournaments. Therefore Basketball Spotlight is proud to give him “The Stamp”.

“The Stamp” is giving to a player that has performed in our events that we feel will be a college basketball star and probable NBA player. Many top players have received “The Stamp” in the past including Tyreke Evans, Lance Stephenson, Mike Gilchrist, Perry Dozier , Tyus Battle and Harry Giles.

Congratulations to Cody Riley and his family for joining this elite club of players. Remember this is just the beginning keep working hard.

Potomac Valley AAU 5th Grade Championship Recap: Team Glory Strikes Gold

Harmon led the way with 22 points and 13 assist. Domingus Stevenson added 18 markers while Darius Miles scored 10 points and snatched down 15 boards. Congrats to Team Glory for winning the crown.

What Did We Learned In Atlantic City?

The 2013 edition of the Atlantic City Showcase was like no other. The excitement reached new level and many of the championship games came down to the wire. Here are some other things we noticed in America’s Playground.

What Did We Learn In AC?

Super Pool Success!
I must say the 7th Grade Super Pool took this event to a new level. Each game was standing room only and had the feel of the NCAA tournament. While some coaches didn’t understand the format, to us it made a lot of since and added some flair to this event. So the Super Pool experiment gets an A in my book.

AC Showcase Mystic Lives!
Every year at the AC Showcase we have some unexpected results. This year it would have to the National Champs DC Assault losing in the 7th Grade finals. The PV kingpins fight off several tough teams to take the #1 seed after the Super Pool. But their winning streak came to an end in the rematch against Metro Sixers. DCA shouldn’t feel bad because the AC Showcase has been known as Upset City for years.

6th Grade Division Has Parity!
As the Spotlight circuit continues it’s apparent that the 6th Grade Division has a lot of parity. AC Showcase was our fourth event and produced a four different champion. Team IZOD (Tip Off Classic), Philly Pride (MLK Classic), CIA Bounce (Clash For The Cup) and now Team Nelson (AC Showcase. This means the MDC Champion has to be up in the air.

Parents Drive The Spotlight!
The players play hard and the coaches are on the grind but the parent participation also raises the intensity level of the Spotlight tournaments. I been to tournaments all over the country and seen fans react to games but things seemed different at these events especially in AC. It was a joy watching the parents chant and cheer on their teams. Shout out to parent Dawn Brelsford from ETU Select, she goes hard!

Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week: Terrence "Big Smoove" Williams (ETU Select)

Terrence "Big Smoove" Williams

The Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week goes to Terrence “Big Smoove” Williams of ETU Select. Williams had a huge weekend at the Potomac Valley AAU Regional Championships. The forward posted 15 points and 14 rebounds in the championship win over Team Takeover. He also scored 14pts and 7 rbs in the semifinals and 18 markers and 12 caroms in the quarterfinals. Congrats to “Big Smoove” for winning Player Of The Week but keep working hard because this is just the beginning.

Potomac Valley AAU 8th Grade Championship Recap: DC Assault Holds On

 DCA Brings Home Crown

In the Potomac Valley AAU 8th Grade Championship DC Assault fought off 6th Man Warriors to win the title 58-53. Congrats to DC Assault for winning the PV Regional championship.

Potomac Valley AAU 6th Grade Championship Recap: ETU Select Wins Regional Title

ETU Select Takes PV Crown

This past weekend ETU Select 6th Grade won the Potomac Valley AAU Regional Championship in convincing fashion. They beat DC Assault in the quarterfinals 59-39, then went on to handle Team Takeover (Jamison) 54-37 in the semifinals and then ran past Team Takeover (Brown) 50-33 to take home one of the toughest AAU regional championships in the country. All 8 players contributed to the successful weekend. This will secure ETU Select a number one pool seed in the upcoming 6th Grade AAU Nationals in Hampton, VA. Congratulations to all the players and coaches.

Players: Tyler Brelsford, Hunter Dickinson, Tyrese Jenkins, Carsten Kogelnik, Ryan Swigart, Josh Watts, Terrance Williams, Jahmir Young.

Gauchos Back On Top

The 5th Grade Division of the AC Showcase gave us a look into the future. We see some top ballers on the horizon. Here’s a look inside this age group and the All Tournament Team.

Gauchos Mean Business!
The Gauchos returned to Basketball Spotlight by running through the AC Showcase. They knocked off some pretty tough competition in their quest for the championship. There’s no denying that they are leading the race to take that Grand Finale Banner back to the Bronx and hang it in the in their home gym.

5 Teams 4 Spots
The Grand Finale final four is a five team race as we enter the last leg. The Gauchos, CJ Hawks, Team Glory, Team Phenom and Team Takeover all have a shot to advance to Trenton Catholic on June 15th.

Inside The AC Showcae 6th Grade

Team Nelson Found Their Groove In AC

The 6th Grade Division of the AC Showcase was filled with heart throbbing games. Here’s an inside look at this age group and the All Tournament Team.

Team Nelson Peaking at Right Time!
Last year after losing in the AC Showcase Team Nelson won the MDC and took home the Grand Finale crown. This year they seem to have started their run a little earlier by winning the AC Showcase. Next up is the MDC in which they will be trying to secure the #1 seed for the Grand Finale Final Four.

Grand Finale Race Tight As Ever!
The 6th Grade Grand Finale final four race will definitely come down to the MDC. All top 4 teams will be entering the MDC therefore they really will be playing for the final four seeds. They way things are looking anyone on of these teams could be taking the banner home on June 15th at Trenton Catholic High School.

Inside AC Showcase 7th Grade

Metro Sixers Were All Smiles In AC

The 7th Grade Division of the AC Showcase was some of the best basketball we’ve seen at Basketball Spotlight. Here’s an inside look at this age group and the All Tournament Team.

Metro Sixers Make Statement!
Metro Sixers came close to winning a few Spotlight tournaments but saved their best showing for our most loaded event. They played some of the best teams in the region including National Champions DC Assault and left with the crown. Now they are in position to make a run at the Grand Finale Final Four.

Grand Finale Race Still Unclear!
After two teams forfeited their Grand Finale points the race has become even more wide opened. Metro Sixers are currently the #1 seed with Wall 2 Wall right on their heels. The MDC is around the corner therefore we will see how things shape up after we leave Neptune.

Inside The AC Showcase 8th Grade

Team IZOD Handled AC

The 8th Grade Division of the AC Showcase wrapped up in impressive fashion. It was only fitting that a game winner shot decided the championship. Here’s an inside look at this age group and the All Tournament Team.

Team IZOD Making Their Move?
In the beginning if the season I said I felt Team IZOD/St. Michaels has enough experienced players to make a run for the Grand Finale crown. They have been one of the hottest teams on the circuit as of late and have thrown themselves deep into the final four run. A good showing at the MDC should have them making the trip to Trenton Catholic on Sunday, June 16th.

New Champion Guaranteed!
Since Team Final didn’t attend the AC Showcase it’s impossible for them to return to the Grand Finale final four and defend their title. Now they door is open for the likes of CBC, Playaz, Team IZOD, Black Mambas, Team Nelson and MCB Elite. The smoke will definitely clear after the Memorial Day Classic.
