12U AAU Nationals Recap Day 3: Youth Interlock Falls To Houston Select

Tony Upchurch (Houston Select)

Joe Burton scored 14 points and Tony Upchurch added 12 markers as Houston Select defeated Youth Interlock (Team Nelson) 49-39 in a pool play thriller. Sheppard Gardner scored 13 points for YI in the loss.

Day 3 Standout Performers

Tony Upchurch Forward (Houston Select)- If you think of Upchurch think about a 12 year old Larry Johnson type that dunks the rock and plays with tremendous power. I was definitely surprised how he passes the rock and plays with finesse. He’s tremendous athlete and knows how to take his game to the blocks to get easy buckets.

Joe Burton Forward (Houston Select)- Burton killed Team Nelson with his length by the cup. He received numerous passes from Upchurch in the high/low offense. Joe caught the passes with ease and laid ball softly in the bucket. He looked like a baby Tim Duncan towering over defenders.

Brandon Eitenne Guard (Houston Select)- While Upchurch and Burton draw the double team in the post Eitenne makes you pay with his outside shooting and runners in the lane. Just when you think a team is making a run he drills a shot to kill their momentum.

Kelly Oubre Guard (Houston Select)- The southpaw has some flair in his game. He attacks the basket from angles and will pull up mid dribble for a shot. He also excels in transition by using his size to shield shot blockers before scoring. He has a Jalen Rose type of game.

Sheppard Gardner (Team Nelson)- Gardner gave his all until the final buzzer. I really noticed how accurate his jump shot is even when he missed. He had to do some things on the blocks but he’s truly a wing guard with a lot of game. The kid can flat out play.
