Wassup you'll, 

It’s Ja'Quaye James aka JellyFam guwop. I'm here to let you'll know that everything is going good in my life right now. I'm getting all my workouts in, getting stronger, getting bigger, better and getting all the respect I feel I deserve. Things are coming together for me in school, such as my grades and having a good attitude. Life could not be better. So with that being said living in a world where it's all about me, me, me. I would like to give thanks to God because without him I know none of this would be possible. 

This week was a good productive and fun week for me. I got to see a lot of close friends and top high school talent in the state of New Jersey. I got a chance to really analyze the high school guards and visualize myself competing against them next year. Therefore I have to get ready now so I will be really ready when the time comes. Speaking on high school's I'm so lose with my choice, I went on numerous visits and seen crazy teams play and still have no idea which one I would like to attend. I think my dad and I are just waiting for that perfect fit, wherever that may be, but in the words of my man my coach "Kie" says it will all work itself out. 

I don't want to bore you'll with all the A's and B's I got in school, countless shots I put up, how many push-ups and sit-ups I did, you'll already know those things are a given...apart of my routine... so I'm signing off... CP3 Invitational Day 2 Recap: National Champions Prevail In Overtime!

CP3 All Stars Win it All 

The CP3 Invitational concluded today with the host CP3 All Stars defeating Team Takeover 65-58 in overtime. Kobe Langley and Mike Green combined for 29 points in the win while Justin Moore poured in 29 of his own for TTO in the loss. 

 Day 2 7th Grade Top Performers

Mike Green Guard (CP3 All Stars)
After having a slow first half in the finals, Green woke in the closing moments of regulation and in overtime. He played the pick and roll game with Wendell Moore which kept Team Takeover off balance. Once Green got the switch he wanted, he used a head fake or jab step to get past defenders. He spent most of the latter part of the game at the charity stripe which helped the national champs seal the game. This kid outside shot is usually like cash dollars therefore is new name is Mike “Money” Green or Money Mike for short.

Kobe Langley Guard (CP3 All Stars)
Langley had a spurt when he showed that star power I saw at the AAU Nationals last July. The southpaw tormented TTO in transition with hang glide buckets and big time pull ups. He also stepped up the defensive pressure and helped cause some crucial turnovers. He came things close until Mike Green could get it going.

Wendell Moore Forward (CP3 All Stars) 
Part of the reason he’s considered the best player in the country is that he can dominate the game without dominating the ball. He’s CP3 primary inside presence and Team Takeover had to send at least three players to the glass to try and contain him. This kid is so quick off his feet it’s amazing. Once he has the ball he commands so much attention that it makes life easier for the other players.

Justin Moore Guard (Team Takeover) 
Moore solidified himself as one of the best if not the best combo guard in the country. CP3 had no answer to his penetration and strong finishes. While CP3 is accustomed of knocking driving guards off balance Moore ate the contact and still finished. He also had enough size to hit the mid-range pull up in the middle of a move. His presence just changes the entire make up of this team. Just You tube (Corey Fisher St. Patricks) and you will see what I mean.

Terrence Williams Forward (Team Takeover) 
Whatever Williams has been eating these days he should keep it coming because he’s in a zone right now. He’s just more focused and active for longer periods of the game. On the post he’s showing great footwork and willingness to bang. He battled Wendell Moore hard all game. He had two 3 point plays the old fashion way to kept things close.

Mehki Long Guard (Team Takeover)
 Long came in and gave Team Takeover some great minutes off the pine. His length caused problems on the defensive end and allowed him to guard different positions. Right now he has long legs and a small torso which means he should shoot up several inches over the next couple years. He might turn out to be a good prospect in the TTO stable.

Bryan Sanders Guard (Team Florida) 
Sanders is built like a brick house but has the scoring ability of a natural combo guard. In their playoff matchup versus Team United Sanders was the difference because TU could not contain him on the perimeter. Bryan has enough handle to get past the first line of defense then he uses his power to reach pay dirt. Right now this kid is very dominant on this level especially on the offensive end.

Swinton Acosta Guard (Team Florida) 
Another reason Team Florida defeated Team United was the play of reserve guard Swinton Acosta. Acosta checked in the game and instantly brought his team energy but pushing the pill and distributing it to teammates. He also nailed a deep jumper and converted a couple of buckets in transition. He seemed to have fun playing the game and plays like a great teammate.

Josh Sanquinetti Guard (Team Florida) 
Sanquinetti is strictly a scoring guard for the Florida crew. He prefers banging the jumper from the corner but can also slice to the basket for a deuce. He made a couple of crucial baskets to help them pull out the win.

CP3 Invitational Day 1 7th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Wendell Moore (CP3 All Stars)

The CP 3 Invitational kicked off today and Basketball Spotlight in the building. The last game of the evening featured the 7th Grade battle of Team Takeover vs National Champion CP 3. Here’s what we saw as CP 3 pulled out the victory.

Wendell Moore Forward (CP3) 
On this team Moore plays the post especially on defense but this kid is a guard no doubt. He’s so powerful with the rock but has skills and finesse in his package. He can cross you and get to the cup, bully his way through or hit a step back trey. Then when you add in that he plays with a motor on both ends of the floor, you have to say he’s the #1 player in the country. No one impacts the game as much as this kid.

Mike Green Guard (CP3) 
When Team Takeover tried to take control of the game Green pulled out his dagger. The lefty hit a huge trey to give his team the lead for good. He has been spending a lot of time developing his dribble drive game and it shows. He converted some tough finishes while showing great body control. He also hurt TTO at the charity stripe.

Keyshawn Langley Guard (CP3) 
Langley came up big when CP3 needed him most. During the 2nd half he checked into the game and nailed back to back treys that gave the national championships the momentum. He's usually known for his point guard skills but in this one his scoring stood out.

Josh Watts Guard (Team Takeover) 
Watts versatility helped Team Takeover stay in the game. He gave them a big wing target on the perimeter and helped them break the press. He’s fills the lane well when running the floor like a deer. I think he has a chance to be a good wing player down the road.

Justin Moore (Team Takeover)

The CP 3 Invitational kicked off today and Basketball Spotlight in the building. The 7th Grade got underway this afternoon and we saw a few prospects. Here’s a breakdown of who did what. 

CP3 Invitational Day 1 7th Grade Top Performers 

Justin Moore Guard (Team Takeover) 
Moore made an appearance with the 7th Grade group and wasted no time dominating the competition. His combines smooth moves and strong finishes. At times he seemed to be playing in slow motion but still couldn’t be contained. Moore came off the bench and tallied a solid 16 markers. If this squad can keep him on board they have a chance to go a long way. He reminds me of Corey Fisher during his high school years.

Terrence Williams Forward (Team Takeover) Williams kept his momentum going from the DMV Takeover, but this time he showed more ball handling and play making skills from the perimeter. He pulled the Team United big man away from the cup and used his quickness to skate pass him. He also gave us a taste of his face up jumper and pull up in the lane.

Anthony Harris Guard (Team Takeover) 
Harris added to the TTO fire power with good finishes in transition, pull up jumpers from the mid- range area and hitting the three ball. Defensively he was very active on the press while helping his club collect a couple of steals. His energy helps TTO reach another level.

Tyler Brelsford Guard (Team Takeover) 
Brelsford took full advantage of TTO added fire power. He had a ball dishing the rock to this loaded roster of scorers. He drove baseline one play and threw a left handed pass to Harris in the opposite corner for a trey ball that broke Team United back. He continues to flourish running the show.

BJ Joyner Forward (Team Takeover) 
Joyner did a good job playing off the weak side of Williams. The big forward runs the floor like a mack truck and looks his best when finishing off plays. He has the ability to create plays off the dribble but must pick his spots better because he over dribbles occasionally.

Jamir Young Guard (Team Takeover) 
Young was all around the floor and contributing on both end of the floor. He got into the lane for the short floater and was pest on the press. His quickness added another weapon to the DMV top dogs.

JC Tharrington Guard (Team United) 
Tharrington was deadly from behind the arc and carried the torch for TU on the perimeter. The only problem was he had to handle the ball a little too much which took away from him being free on the wing. If TU can develop another ball handler JC will be able to help them even more. 



Nicolas Evtinov Forward (Team United) 
Nicolas is a little undersized for the power forward spot but his skills including good footwork helps him get through. He played the low post during the high/low set up with BJ Mack. Evitinov is good at sealing defenders mercilessly under the bucket before scoring.

BJ Mack Forward (Team United) 
I’ve read debates about this kid on different blogs and I’m here to tell you that he can play. Mack has soft touch and a good feel for the game. He spent most the day at the high post because of his touch but I think he could be more valuable on the lower blocks. In terms of improvement I think he could rebound more out of position and try harder to stay of out foul trouble.

Myles Pierre Guard (Charlotte Rivals) 
Pierre has been a name to know in this age group for a few years and I can see why. The strong combo guard has a polished game and the demeanor of an experienced veteran. I like his finishing ability and willingness to want the rock when the game is on the line. His strength and skills help him fight off traps and other defensive schemes. 

 
Ford Cooper Guard (Charlotte Rivals) 
The bouncy point guard brings some excitement to the game. He trickery handle opens up the lane and allows him to sneak in a floater or drop a dime. He teamed well with Pierre in their victory.

CP3 Invitational Day 1 8th Grade Top Performers

Stephon Wynn (Team United)

The CP 3 Invitational kicked off today and Basketball Spotlight in the building. We caught a couple of 8th Grade games and these are the players that impressed us.

Stephon Wynn Forward (Team United) 
Wynn was the most productive player we saw with Team United. He came off the bench and went straight to work on the blocks. Stephon isn't very long but his linebacker frame helped him carve up space on the blocks. When he received the rock he used a feathery touch and good footwork to punish Garner Road. Wynn doesn’t waste time trying to dance around the perimeter he understands that his bread is buttered in the paint.

Qon Murphy Guard (Team United)

Murphy trimmed up a little which helps his quickness and shot up a couple of inches. What remains the same is the versatility he has that allows him to score in many ways. He enjoys attacking the hole and initiating the contact before finishing. He spends a lot of time at the charity stripe therefore he needs to upgrade his free throw shooting accuracy.

Foster Bridges Guard (Team United) 
Bridges is a sniper from the perimeter and showed it early by banging home some early treys. When the defense bites on the penetration he can be seen floating to the corner and waiting for the rock. His release is very quick and he has the size to shoot over most defenders. 

Rechon Black Guard (CB Spiders) 
Black looks to be closer to 6’3 nowadays and relishes the point guard role. He looked good running the 1-4 set while breaking down the defenders and dishing the rock. When he didn’t feel the need to shake the defender his size allowed him to just make the simple pass over the top. He has a bright future at this position. 

DJ Little Guard (CB Spiders) 
This combo guard is wired to score for the Spiders. He packs a powerful drive and difficult to contain from busting through the lane. Little is also an intimidating force on defense by bullying ball handlers and forcing them to turn over the rock. I was impressed with his play. 

Yancey Hairston Forward (CB Spiders) 
Hairston doesn’t possess many post moves but he understands that he needs to get deep post position and kiss the ball off the glass. His inside play kept the Runnin Rebels honest on defense. 

Lamont Smith Guard (NC Runnin Rebels) 
Smith started the game versus the Spiders with a spark. He’s a physical guard that throws his body around when attacking the rim and his capable of launching the deep bomb. When shot blockers attempt to contest his shot he shields them with a strong frame before converting. Kid has a lot of swag. 

Jaden Gardner Forward (NC Runnin Rebels) 
Gardner played with a lot of energy. He played very active inside on both ends of the floor. Gardner used his quick leaping ability to keep the ball alive for his teammates. On offense he is still developing moves but has some effect in the scoring column. 

Jarren McCallister Guard (Garner Road) 
McCallister attacks the rim relentlessly. He can score in the half court set or in transition. He does need to develop a mid-range game to protect his body from hitting the floor so much. He has good lead guard potential. 

Jeremy Robinson Forward (Garner Road) 
Robinson is a long lefty that scored many buckets in their loss to Team United. He finished after tough drives to the hole and hit a couple of outside jumpers. Once he adds strength it will help him stay tall instead on bending down to gather himself before finishing. 

Matt McClung Guard (Garner Road) 
Matt is a smart guard that knows his way around the floor. He’s small but has a good basketball IQ that allows him to use the floater or let his shot go at the right time.

What Did We Learn At The DMV Takeover?

The Basketball Spotlight DMV Takeover gave us a great view into the grammar school hoop world of the DC and Maryland area. Here are a few things we learned during our first event. 

What Did We Learn At The DMV Takeover?

1. Team Takeover Dominance!
Since the off the court situation with DC Assault, Team Takeover has positioned themselves top to bottom as the premier club in the area and this was evident at the DMV Takeover. Six of their seven teams made it to the finals with four clubs actually bringing home the title. It was an impressive weekend for the flagship program.

2. DC/Baltimore Border War! 
This was my first experience of the DC/Baltimore border war. I’ve heard different stories and saw TV shows like The Wire but this was my first time seeing it in action. The games between these two groups were very intense and even required my full attention. It definitely brought another level of excitement to the event.

3. New 24= Good Look! 
I must say this was my first event at the 10 court New 24 facility and I was impressed. The games were packed and as the level of play escalated the environment grew more intense. On day 2 the yells and cheering from around the venue was something to hear. Can’t wait until next year.

4. Mistaken Identity! 
This event was entitled the DMV Takeover because Basketball Spotlight intended on taking over the DMV area for one weekend. Understandably, it was confused as a joint venture with Team Takeover organization which was not the case. So to clear things up moving forward we decided to rename this event the “DMV Jamboree”. See you guys next year!

"Man-Child" Mathis Stole The Show

The 8th Grade Division gave us a look at some new prospect and also produced a first time Spotlight champion. Here’s the Best Of The Best and Top 10 Performers from the DMV Takeover.

Best Performer: Montez Mathis- Baltimore Elite 
Mathis edged out his teammate Quickly especially after his performance in the finals. “Man-Child” dismantled MD Scholars because he’s a matchup nightmare. It’s hard for anyone to contain him on this level. 

Best Play Maker: Emmanuel Quickly- Baltimore Elite 
Few can argue with this selection because Quickly makes it happen for this squad. He glides anywhere on the floor and breaks down the defense with ease. I have a feeling many top high school and college coaches will be on this kids heels. 

Best Prospect: Cameron Reddish – Team Final 
His weekend was cut short with a severe ankle injury but when the smoke clears I think he has the best upside of anyone in attendance. We might have a budding superstar on the horizon. 

Best Defender: Tre’ Wood – Team Takeover 
Wood made it difficult for any ball handler to breathe this weekend. He plays defense with great passion and high energy level. 

Best Scorer: Will Reed – B’More Finest 
Reed’s job is to get buckets for this club and proved capable at the DMV Takeover. He's not the biggest or quickest but very effective. 

Best Passer: Donovan Toatley- Team Takeover 
I like how this kid sees the floor and makes things happen for teammates. He enjoys adding a little flair when pushing the rock in transition. 

Best Floor General: Brandon Madison 
Madison controlled the tempo enough to help his team reach the finals. He has proven to be very comfortable running the point these days.

The 7th Grade Division had some budding youngsters and gave us a first time champion. Here’s the Best Of The Best and Top 10 Performers from the Class of 2019. 

DMV Takeover 7th Grade Best Of The Best 

Best Performer: Terrence Williams- Team Takeover 
“Big Smoove” gets my vote after registering a huge weekend. He’s been balancing his time with his grammar school team but this weekend he made sure he was in the building at the right time. His numbers speak for themselves, kid is a walking double-double. 

Best Prospect: Che Evans – B’More Finest 
The lanky wing player has potential oozing from his veins. When he makes a move you can picture how that same move might be enhanced two to three years from now. He will be a name to know in the DMV area. 

Best Playmaker: Mark Bradshaw- Team Nelson 
Whether it’s scoring and making the right pass on the break, Bradshaw looked very comfortable in Maryland. He once again showed that take over the game ability. 

Best Scorer: Jordan Hairston – VA Hokies 
Hairston played in the Blue Division but buckets are buckets and he had a lot of them. In the semifinals versus Team Takeover (Orange). He literally carried his team to victory. 

Best Shooter: Fahmir Ali- Team Final 
Leave this kid open and he will make you pay dearly. Ali will torch you with the mid-range or deep ball. He makes it look so smooth and easy. 

Best Defender: Gerard Mungo- B”More Finest 
His versatility and size allows him to guard the 1 thru 4 positions. This skill and talent will keep him on the floor for most of the game. He also isn’t afraid to stick his nose inside for rebounds. 

Best Passer: Tyler Brelsford- Team Takeover 
Brelsford delivers the rock like air mail, quickly and efficiently. He can make the simple in the flow of the offense or he can put a little mustard on it in transition. 

Best Floor General: Kaseem Tolliver- Team Nelson 
During the Clash For The Cup TN looked a little rattled at times but now the quarterback returned and they are getting back in sync. This kid just calms everything down.

Jordan Toles Left The DMV Takeover As The Best Prospect

The 6th Grade Division featured some future big time players. Here’s our look at the Best of The Best from the DMV Takeover.

Best Prospect - Jordan Toles, MSE National Select 
Yes this was my first time watching Toles and he made me into a believer. He came into the DMV with a national rep and showed he was worthy of the praise. He has the chance to be a big time prospect. 

Best Performer- Ishmael Leggett, Team Takeover (Black) 
Leggett got it done all weekend and his team left with the crown, so it’s only right that he gets top billing. The kid is a bona-fide player for real. 

Best Shooter – Justin Lykes, Team Takeover (Black) 
Lykes outside shooting in the finals sealed the deal on this category. Even when he missed the crowd thought it was going in. The kid has a ratchet. 

Best Playmaker- Zion Harmon, MSE National Select 
Yes he turned it up in this age group also. His play making skills had this all-star squad in the finals. He’s not named Zion “The Lion” for nothing. 

Best Defender- Montez McNeil, MSE National Select 
The intimidating force inside had scorers altering their shots all weekend. He’s a big road block in the paint. 

Best Passer- Canin Reynolds, Team Takeover (Black) 
The table setter for the champions made things easy for his group of scorers. His job is to keep everyone happy and he delivered this weekend. 

Best Game: Team Takeover (Black) vs. MSE National Select 
The small but packed court made the atmosphere for this match up stand out. Both coaches were barking and the kids responding with great play on the court. This battle was reminiscent of many great Spotlight showdowns of the past.

Harmon Finished As The #1 Performer For The Weekend 

It was definitely a treat watching the 5th Graders go at it for the weekend. Now it’s time give you our best of the best awards and Top 10 rankings based on performance. 

DMV Takeover 5th Grade Best Of The Best 

Best Performer- Zion Harmon, Team Glory 
Yes Superman played in about 10 games this weekend and still was able to carry his team to the 5th Grade crown. Teams try everything to slow him down to no avail. He doesn’t care about the target on his back. 

Best Shooter – William Margarites, M.A.D.E Elite 
This kids range is when he walks into the gym. Once he squares up and sets his feet its money in the bank. Put a 3 next to his name in the books. 

Best Passer - Elijah Hardy, Team Takeover 
The PG seems to be born to play the position. Don’t drop your eyes when he’s leading the fast break because you might miss something very nice. 

Best Floor General- Knasir McDaniel, Team Glory 
Though he’s a 4th Grader there’s not many that can stop Dug getting where he wants on the floor. He keeps his head up and his eyes surveying the floor like a surgeon. 

Best Playmaker – Henry Hall, Team Takeover 
The big fella versatility stands out so much for a kid in this age group. He does so many things that make his team go. 

Best Prospect- Erik Reynolds, Team Glory 
The sky is the limit for this kid in terms of development. He’s just scratching the surface of what is ahead for him down the road. 

Best Defender Trey English, Baltimore Elite 
This youngster was a pest on the ball all weekend. He takes pride in playing lock down defense which is very rare these days. 

Best Game Team Glory vs. Team Takeover 
This rivalry is a long way from being over. Their thrilling championship game came down to the wire. I can’t wait to see these two groups tangle again. Maybe they might meet at the AC Showcase.

In The Spotlight: Erik Reynolds (Team Glory)

Name: Erik Reynolds 

AAU Team: Team Glory 

Position: Combo Guard 

Class: 2021 

Analysis: Reynolds has impressive frame for his age and is still growing and it appears he'll be a versatile Combo guard at the next level. He plays much bigger than he is, due to his wingspan and length. He has a smooth stroke out beyond the three point stripe and he runs the floor well and can finish with the best already. During the weekend he also showed a nice mid-range game and a dangerous dribble pull up. Versatile player that guards multiple positions and see’s things before they happen. Superstar potential but plays within the team concept for national power Team Glory.

Donovan Toatley (Team Takeover)

The senior division of the Basketball Spotlight DMV Takeover took in most of my attention. These 8th Graders brought their game and let Basketball Spotlight really see what they had. Here’s our second look at the 8th Grade top performers.

Donovan Toatley PG – Team Takeover 
Toatley had another solid weekend. He’s not has flashy as in the past but he’s very efficient and takes care of the rock. I love how he’s showing maturity when staying within the offense and picking his spots to score. He plays well when running the point or off the ball when Tre’ Wood has the controls. He was very effective in their mercy rule victory over MB 1.

Myles Dread F- Team Takeover 
Dread is one of the smartest players around because he understands his limitations therefore he uses his brains to make plays. One of the most glaring aspects of his game is his passing ability. He hit cutting teammates in stride and understands how to feed the post. To become a legit wing he still must continue his ball handling development and stretch his range on the perimeter. 

Tre’ Wood G- Team Takeover 
Wood had to be the best on ball defender I saw in Maryland. His ball pressure made several ball handlers give up their dribble. On offense he’s a slasher and scores best in transition. When he controls the rock he has penetration ability but sometimes drives too deep into the defense. We expect his game to expand once he reaches high school. 

Charles Pride WG – Gym Ratz 
Pride had his scoring hand going throughout the tournament which helped his team advance to the quarterfinals after victories over Virginia Panthers and Baltimore Showtime. He tried to put the team on his back in their tough loss to eventual champion Baltimore Elite. Pride continues to go at all competition and put up his numbers. 

Will Reed G- B’More Finest 
Will is the go to man for this club. The combo guard has the body type of long time Baltimore legend Michael Lloyd and the scoring mentality to go with it. His displayed big time body control when shielding shot blockers and spent a lot of time at the charity stripe. He’s a physical guard. 

Ju Ju Hooks G 6th Man Warriors (DE) 
Hooks has been scoring defenders for years and the DMV Takeover was no exception. He’s hard to contain because he can put the ball in the hole from so many different areas. His main weapon is his driving floater and ability to finish in transition. I also like the way he has been developing his point guard skills. He helped the Delaware version of the 6th Man Warriors reach the final four. 

Davione Robinson G 6th Man Warriors (DE) 
Speaking of scoring Davione Robinson brought his game for the Delaware boys. The high flying guard led the team in scoring in route of them making to the semifinals. He teams with Hooks to give this Delaware squad a good 1-2 punch. 

Devon Dotson PG MB 1 
Dotson has grown a couple of inches since I saw him with the CB Spiders. His game has matured because he doesn’t believe in attacking full speed every play, now he picks his spots and conserves energy for later in the game. He still prefers going to the right side of the floor but can change direction when the defense catches on. He had a decent weekend.

Mika Adams-Woods PG- 
Gym Ratz After dancing through the first two games Adams-Woods had a tough time while getting swarmed by a ton of quick Takeover guards. The slick lefty then shook off that outing and rebounded with a good showing against Baltimore Elite. He’s also a big time gamer. 

Vand Worthy WG MB 1 
Worthy was worth the price of admissions. He has a very quick crossover move which allows him to thrust through the lane. Once he gets inside he can score over the defense or drop a nice no look pass. This ultra-quick guard just imposes his will on the defense. He also had to be one of the most athletic guards in the building. Look forward to seeing him again soon. 

Tyler Williams WG MB 1 
Williams is another talented wing guard for this Carolina bunch. He excels in transition and showed off his multi-dimensional game. He even gave me a taste of his post up skills. He teams well with Worthy and Dotson to make a credible backcourt.

DeVandre Edmonds F – Mass Shooting Stars 
This was the best I’ve seen Edmonds play this season. He was a good target near the free throw line and was able to maneuver into a few buckets. I was really impressed with his aggression once he touched the pill and looked for his offense. He needs to continue down this path. 


Jose Lara F-Mass Shooting Stars 
Lara is an energy player for the New England squad. His number isn’t called much on the offensive end but he makes the most of his minutes by banging, snatching boards and playing defense. He also caught a rim rocking dunk that drove the crowd crazy.

Basketball Spotlight DMV Takeover 8th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Montez "Man-Child" Mathis (Baltimore Elite

The senior division of the Basketball Spotlight DMV Takeover took in most of my attention. These 8th Graders brought their game and let Basketball Spotlight really see what they had. Here’s our first look at the 8th Grade top performers.

Montez Mathis F- Baltimore Elite 
Mathis has me torn because at first glance I had him pegged as a back to the basket player but as the weekend went on his perimeter game stood out. He showed his spot up jumper, step back trey, dribble drives and play making ability. He used his versatility to give the business to MB1 and Maryland Scholars in the finals where he led his squad in scoring. His specialty is breaking down the defense and finishing through contact at the tin. He was virtually unstoppable at times in Maryland. Therefore is new name is Montez "Man-Child" Mathis. 

Emmauel Quickly G – Baltimore Elite 
My eyes light up when I see a talented point guard so Quickly had me following his every move. His handle is like poetry in motion while he skates past defenders. He combines a great array of spin moves and tricky dribbles that makes him difficult to contain. When it comes to finishing his Elastic Man type arms stretch out to get buckets. When he’s coming full speed ahead the defense is at his mercy because his change of direction skill is so good. I couldn’t gauge his outside shot because he wasn’t forced to take many. He was the best point guard I saw at the DMV Takeover. 

Qualil Giles G-Baltimore Elite 
Giles has a stocky frame but moves his feet well enough to be a defensive stopper. He continuously beat ball handlers to the spot and helped out when teammates got beat. On offense he’s capable of playing both guard positions while scoring when needed. 

Tyree Myers G- Baltimore Elite 
Myers plays his role great for this club. He’s called upon to change the pace of the game while pushing the rock of the floor and attack in the gaps of the defense. He’s a fearless competitor who doesn’t mind matching up with the go to man from the opposing team. 

Brandon Madison G- MD Sports Scholars 
Each game I see Madison run the point it’s hard to believe he was an inside power player a few years back. Yes the kid has made the transition and used his skills to help the Sports Scholars knock off heavy weight Team Takeover in the semifinals. Madison is still learning to set up teammates but can still switch to scoring mode when required. His strong frame allows him to get anywhere on the floor at any time. 

Rasheed Brown G-MD Sports Scholars 
Madison could lean on Brown for scoring because the southpaw puts the ball in the hole quickly. He can kill you in transition by racing to the cup or stepping out burying the trey during the secondary break. He’s capable of putting together eight points very quickly. 

PJ Mustipher F-MD Sports Scholars 
Mustipher was absent from the MLK Classic so this was my first look at the youngster. The big fella is very nimble on his feet and has a feathery touch to finish the job. He showed me good footwork and post moves around the cup. He will be one to watch moving forward.

Fahmir Ali (Team Final)

The 7th Grade Division of the DMV Takeover had some great moments and gave us a first time champion. Here’s Part 2 of our Top Performers in this class.

Fahmir Ali – Guard- Team Final 

 While critics say he isn’t quick enough Ali continues to drop numbers and help Team Final collect victories. This weekend he let 6th Man Warriors, MD Playmakers and B’More Finest feel his wrath. He averaged double figures from the field with a collection of 3 points and midrange pull ups. This kid cannot be defined by position he’s just a flat out player. 

Khyree Temple – Forward- Team Final 

Team Final has developed more toughness this season and Temple is one of the reasons. The forward scored 16 points against 6th Man Warriors and B’More Finest. He’s quietly putting together a good season. We only expect him to get better and be considered for some post season all-star selections.

Lavar “Tay” Allen – Wing Guard – 6th Man Warriors 
Tay is the engine to his 6th Man team. He can do pretty much anything on the court both on the offensive and defensive end. He can be the primary ball handler and playmaker for his team as needed but he is at his best when his role is that of the primary scorer. He loves to attack the rim either in transition or in the half court and he is hard to stop due to his strength and underestimated ball handling. Allen also can knock down the long 3 pointer and he gets to the line at a high rate. On the defensive end he can guard 1-4 and is a willing rebounder. When Tay’s motor is turned up and he is playing with passion he is very hard to stop. 

Elijah Hicks – Power Forward – 6th Man Warriors 
When you talk about athletes you might just see a picture of Elijah beside the definition in the dictionary. Although a bit undersized his size, strength, and athleticism makes up for that. Hicks has developed nicely on the basketball court and is 6th Man’s leading rebounder. When the shot goes up nine times out of ten Hicks is going to get the rebound. He gets many of his points from offensive rebound put backs but has developed some nice finishing moves around the basket. Many times at the end of the game you will see Elijah in the box score as the leading scorer for his squad.

Jordan Hairston – Guard- VA Hokies 
The Hokies made their Spotlight debut in the Blue Division but Hairston’s play still earned ink. The scoring machine went to work all weekend. He has scoring touch from all three levels (3 point range, mid-range and inside). He averaged close to 25 points per game while finishing with 28 markers in their semifinal win over Team Takeover (Orange). In the finals he ran out of bullets against a tough Philly Triple Threat but he made Basketball Spotlight take notice. 

Jalen Willis – Combo Guard – Baltimore Elite 
Willis primarily plays off the ball and is one of the primary scorers for his team. He accomplishes this by being in attack mode 100% of the time in the half court offense and through the transition game while also getting to the charity stripe more than his fair share. In time of need he can handle the primary ball handling duties. He is very hardnosed and a relentless competitor. There are not many players that have a motor like him. He had good size, strength and speed so he is a hard guard for smaller defenders. 

Will Thomas – Wing Forward – Baltimore Elite 
Thomas has to be one of the top prospects out of the Baltimore area. He is very long and athletic and runs the floor like a gazelle. He has a nice mid to long range shot and he can put it on the floor and attack from the wing. Will can post up and make the turnaround jump shot or he can face you up and hit the jumper with range out to the three point line. 

Jermere Williams – Wing Forward – Baltimore Elite 
Jermere is a solid forward that is very strong and he uses his strength as a mismatch against smaller defenders. He is a player that can play multiple positions for his Baltimore Elite team. If he needs to play more a traditional power forward position he can bang in the paint and rebound and then he has the ability to push the ball down the court himself or he can play one of the perimeter spots and attack the rim off the bounce. With his size and athleticism he has the ability to guard 3-4 positions on the floor.

Introducing 3rd Grader Franklin Ayissi-Etoh (M.A.D.E. Elite)

Analysis: Franklin definitely deserved the by trophy after his performance this weekend at the DMV Takeover. In the finals the 3rd Grader tallied 20 points and hit a big trey from NBA range to put his team ahead for good. He would have made Kobe Bryant proud wearing the number 24. I’m happy to have a many more years to see this youngster hoop.

Terrence "Big Smoove" Williams (Team Takeover)

The 7th Grade Division of the DMV Takeover had some great moments and gave us a first time champion. Here’s Part 1 of our Top Performers in this class.

Terrance Williams – Power Forward – Team Takeover 
Williams seems to always control the paint against any team he plays. He isn’t the most athletic player on the floor but standing 6’3” he understands how to finish through contact or against longer more athletic players. He has added a nice short corner and high post elbow jumper to his game and he consistently gets to the line and converts his free throws. Big Smoove is a walking double – double. He had 10 points and 10 boards in the championship against Team Nelson and had gaudy numbers against BMore’s Finest in the semi with 17 points and 19 rebounds. Terrance has made a case that he is the top Power Forward in the region and one of the best in the country.

Tyler Brelsford – Point Guard – Team Takeover 
Brelsford is the “Maestro” of the Takeover team. Takeover has added more weapons around him so he has needed to score less this year but he understands when he needs to score versus being a facilitator. When Williams was absent in a pool play game he scored a team high 12 points. Tyler is one of the best passers in the class as he always plays with his head up and is trying to get you the ball in scoring position. He loves to throw the lead pass down the court so if you don’t get back on defense Takeover will be getting layups. He has become a more vocal leader as he is always directing traffic both on the offensive and defensive end. Tyler is a high IQ player that understands how to finish out games and he is a great free throw shooter. 

Jay Heath – Wing Guard – Team Takeover 
Heath is a long athletic wing with a high motor on both ends of the floor. He is deadly in transition and gets to the free throw at a high rate. In the half court he loves to slash to the basket and knows how to cut without the ball. He also has a nice mid-range jump shot and can shoot the floater. Heath can occasionally knock down the long ball and as he becomes more consistent from range he will be pretty much unstoppable. On defense he can guard either guards or forwards and he rebounds at a high rate for his position using his long wing span to his advantage deflecting balls and making getting steals in the passing lanes. 

Jahmir Young – Combo Guard – Team Takeover 
Young is Brelsford’s back court mate and they complement each other nicely. Jahmir does whatever the team needs him to do to get the win. He brings his fast attacking style on the offensive end as he loves to get to the basket and either finish with his floater or get all the way to the rim. He also has a nice mid-range pull up and can knock down the trey ball. On the defensive end he exudes energy and has the ability to guard taller guards and lock them up. He is considered a thief on defense as evident by all the steals he gets. 

Mekhi Long – Wing Forward – Team Takeover 
Long is a new addition to the Takeover team and he had a good weekend. Mekhi plays to his strengths which is his catch and shoot jump shot from mid-range out to the three point line. He makes his free throws and runs the floor hard so he can get easy transition layups. Long also rebounds very well for his position.

Mark Bradshaw – Wing Guard – Team Nelson 
Bradshaw looked to be in mid-season form during the championship. The game started out slow then the southpaw just ignited the show with 10 straight points. He had the floater dropping and was too much to handle in transition. This kid is definitely wired to score and single handily kept Team Nelson in the game. He also seems to have shot up a couple of inches since last season which makes him more of an intriguing prospect. 

Tariq Ingraham- Forward- Team Nelson 
Ingraham once again proved to be an inside force all weekend. Though productive he’s still a work in progress in terms of footwork, touch and overall post moves. The gentle giant backed defenders and got deep post position. Opponents need to take their shots now while he’s still developing because in a few years he’s going to be difficult to contain.

Kaseem Tolliver – Point Guard- Team Nelson 
The quarterback return from a broken ankle and guided his troops to the finals. The team just flows better when he at the controls. He sets the pace and makes sure the ball gets to the right person at the correct time. Once he gets in basketball shape he’s going to help this team return back to their dominate form of last year. 

Donte Scott – Forward- Team Nelson 
Some might look at Scott and see a player that gets out of control when driving at times but I see a young colt that when he gets it all together should be a blossoming prospect. I love his aggressiveness and willingness to play through mistakes. Defensively he does the job inside in terms of blocking shots and rebounding on the other end he’s slowly making that transition to the wing. 

Gerard Mungo – Wing Guard – BMore’s Finest 
Mungo is a tough hardnosed player that always plays at his pace. He is most effective when he receives the ball on the wing and attacks the basket finishing in a variety of ways often through contact drawing and one opportunities the old fashion way. If need be you can put the ball in Mungo’s hands for straight isolation plays as he can handle the ball really well and he makes good decisions with the ball in his hands. He can guard multiple positions and rebounds well for his position. Mungo has a great demeanor with a calming effect and his team seems to look to him when there is a pressure situation in the game. 

Che Evans – Wing Forward – BMore’s Finest 
Che is a long athletic forward that projects to be wing player. He possibly could have been one of the top 7th grade prospects in the gym this past weekend. Evans loves attacking the basket and finishing high at the rim and he has an improving jump shot as he knocked down a few long balls against Takeover in the semi. On the defensive end he has great timing and understands how to contest and block shots without fouling. He also can rebound at a high level if needed while being able to guard multiple positions due to his elite length and athleticism.
