Next in line seems to be Justin Jackson from Toronto. We featured Jackson nearly two years ago as a rising 7th Grader at the Hoop Group Jr. Elite Camp. We proclaimed him then as the top prospect for that class at the camp and salivated over his potential. Now it’s apparent that he is still on the same road while destroying the competition all over North America. Remember where you saw him first.

AC Showcase Flashback: Peacemakers Hold It Down

Peacemakers Won The AC Showcase On Their Way To Team Of The Year

Shafeek Taylor scored 15 and Semaj Reed added 14 markers and a ton of rebounds as the Peacemakers defeated Team Nelson 57-49 to win the Atlantic City Showcase 14 and Under Championship. Jaquan Johnson scored 14 points for Team Nelson in the loss. This year the Atlantic City will once again bring in some of the top teams in the country. Basketball Spotlight Headed To The Potomac Valley

This weekend Basketball Spotlight will be headed to the Potomac Valley to bring you some great basketball action. We will be bringing you recaps from the Maryland Invitational Tournament and The Team Takeover Tourney. Both events seem to have brought in loads of talent. Basketball Spotlight will be on the scene so check back for some serious updates.

The Basketball Spotlight Top 10 Presented by AGame Apparel is back. I know we have our Summer Slam point system but we still have to chart who we think are the Top 10 Teams of each age group. This is just our opinion and should be taken as such.

Basketball Spotlight 14U Top 10 Presented By AGame Apparel

1. Team Final: TF took two losses at the Clash For The Cup but overall body of work still has them at the top slot. I am anxious to see how they respond in the next event. They still are one of the favorites to reach Summer Slam.

2. Team Scan: TS made it to the finals of the Clash and got a win against TF. They are playing some good ball right now so should only get better when Bobby Martin Jr. returns from injury.

3. Philly Aztecs: They got revenge on Team Takeover and made it to the Final Four of the Clash. They haven’t won a banner yet but their Summer Slam points are racking up.

4. Team Takeover: This powerful squad felt the good bump at the Spotlight. They have serious talent from top to bottom and are probably a pure point guard away from being ridiculous.

5. F.A.C.E.S.: After winning the Jr. Hoophall title they made it to the quarters of the Clash For The Cup. If they remain consistent they should be one of the squads battling out in August.

6. Team Rebels: This rugged bunch has some top talent and played against some tough squads at the Clash. They are definitely a team that most opponents hate to line up against.

7. The City: The got a big win against TS in pool play but then fell to Team Rebels. Right now they need a big finish in AC and the MDC to make an appearance in Summer Slam.

8. NJ Got Game: NJGG came to life at the Clash while picking up a few big pool wins. In the quarterfinals they ran into a serious Team Takeover squad. We will be keeping an eye on this bunch as the season continues.

9. Playaz: In their first outing I must say this team impressed me. They took both teams in their pool to the limit before coming up short. Hopefully we will get to watch them again soon.

10. Philly Triple Threat: They won the Blue Division at the Clash and seem to have a motivated bunch. I’m still waiting to see how they thrive against the Orange Division comp.

Basketball Spotlight 13U Top 10 Presented By AGame Apparel

1. DC Assault: This collection of talent might have all the tools to make a serious run at the AAU Nationals. They ran through the Grand Finale and should be returning north for the Atlantic City Showcase.

2. Team Final: The reigning Team Of The Year finally hit the hardwood this past weekend in Pennsylvania. Now they will set their sights on AC. If they have plans on making it to Summer Slam they must make deep runs in the AC Showcase and MDC.

3. Gauchos: The Choz made it to the finals of the Clash For The Cup. Right now they are in a first place tie with F.A.C.E.S. with 7 Summer Slam points. They seem to be in a good spot to qualify for the August event.

4. F.A.C.E.S.: The Clash For The Cup winners made a big leap from our last poll. The new additions seem to have settled in and now they are looking like the “Killer Bees” again.

5. New Heights: New York league play had NH absent from the Clash For The Cup. Hopefully we can catch them at the AC Showcase. I’m interested to see how they respond without the services of Rakym Felder.

6. Team Scan: TS had a tough run at the Clash. But I do believe they have bounce back ability because of their talented roster. They are also vying for a Summer Slam spot.

7. Philly Triple Threat: PTT knocked off a few good teams at the Clash as they made a Final Four appearance. This tough squad should be a force to reckon with the rest of the way.

8. CT Elite: A Final Four appearance at the Clash moved this squad up a few spots. I don’t believe we have heard the last of them. A good AC showing will have them in the thick of the Summer Slam race.

9. MABC: The Beantown boys have been kind of quiet as of late. They should be coming down soon to tangle at the Spotlight. We will be waiting.

10. Force One: We haven’t heard much from this group since they won the Grand Finale Blue Division. Hopefully we will get another look at this bunch.

1. NY Rising Stars: They were absent from the Clash For The Cup but just won the IS8 Championship. Things should get very interesting with this bunch the rest of the way. They trail Team IZOD are tied with Juice All Stars for Summer Slam points.

2. CBC: The Connecticut boys came down and made a trip to the finals before running into that Cali buzz saw. They gathered 4 quick points and now are back in the Summer Slam race. They will be looking to earn more than some casino chips in Atlantic City.

3. Team IZOD: The reigning Team Of The Year has yet to hold a banner. But their play hasn’t gone unnoticed since they are the Summer Slam point leader with 7 markers. Their arrival should me AC even more interesting.

4. Maryland Panthers: They missed the recent party at the Clash but are anxious to get to Atlantic City. They want to show they are still among the elite teams in the country.

5. DC Assault: A Final Four finish in their Spotlight debut has them in the Top 5. They loved the bump so much they jumped onto the 3rd leg in Atlantic City. Another run to the Final Four or more will have them deep in the Summer Slam race.

6. Juice All Stars: A blown van tire caused them team to fall in the quarterfinals. But being active is paying off as they are tied for second in Summer Slam points. I won’t be surprised if they make it to Burlington in August.

7. CT Elite: The effort was good but they fell to a couple of tough teams at the Clash. Now they are looking to Atlantic City for some revenge and to earn some points.

8. Team Final: This team showed a little moxie but needs to gain more experience in big games. Atlantic City will give them a chance to make things right.

9. Playtime Panthers: The Green and Black don’t back down to anyone. They had a tough draw facing Cali in the quarterfinals at the Clash. Hopefully the experience will help them throughout the season.

10. Team Nelson: TN was absent from the Clash and have been hit with the injury bug recently. But they should be ready for the spring events.

Basketball Spotlight 11U Top 10 Presented By AGame Apparel

1. Gauchos: The Choz made it to the Final Four of the Clash For The Cup. They still have the arsenal to win any tournament. They remain at the top because their success and willingness to go in the fire. We value strength of schedule. They have a great chance of making it to Summer Slam.

2. We Run: WR didn’t have a strong showing at the Clash but rebounded to finish second at the Riverside tournament. We also like the way this squad puts it on the line each game out. They will enter any top level tournament. Summer Slam could be in their grasp.

3. Riverside Hawks: We know RH has the personnel to defeat anyone on any giving night. We were looking forward to a big time showdown with the Gauchos at the Clash but RH had other plans. Hopefully they will be in America’s playground March 19th and 20th.

4. Natural Ballers: NB made a huge leap after winning the Clash For The Cup which featured some top teams. Hopefully they can keep it going and end up in Burlington, NJ in the first weekend in August.

5. DC Assault: The PV squad made their Spotlight debut and made it to the championship. This should make them hungry for more Spotlight success. In one trip they took home 4 points. Summer Slam is definitely a possibility.

6. Fastbreak: A Final Four finish at Clash For The Cup was a great accolade for this squad. Now they have their sights set on the Atlantic City Showcase. They will need to have another great run at AC to qualify for Summer Slam.

7. Delaware Royalty: This team seems to be on the verge of breaking through. This age division is extremely tough but it’s also a lot of parity. They still have an outside shot of making it to Burlington.

8. PWC: I was looking for the bunch to enter the Clash but hopefully they will bring that hustling to Atlantic City. This is a team many don’t want to see in their pool.

9. T Town Ballers: The Capital City bunch has been hovering around the pack for most of the season. Now it’s time for them to have a breakthrough. Eye’s will be watching in Atlantic City.

10. Bayshore Bulldogs: The Bulldogs coach loved the competition and said he can’t wait to tangle again in Atlantic City. This tough comp should get them ready for the NJ State title.

Diary Of A Baller: Malachi "Shoota" Richardson (Trenton, NJ) Entry #20

What’s Up Everybody!

It’s the “Shoota”. This week was smooth, school was good, and the trimester officially ends next Friday. I had tests in social studies, science, and math, of course I banged out the A on all three. We have four more months of school….lol.. looking forward to the summer. At my school we have dress down day, we have it like every 3 weeks, it’s a fundraiser for the PTA, in order to dress down you have to pay a dollar, I wish we could have it every Friday, so I can just put on a pair of jeans and go to school, I don’t like wearing the same thing every single day….lol. I know in high school it's gonna be the same thing all over again....Uniforms!

My week of basketball was a little different. Monday I started my 5:30am workouts, when I finally got to the gym at 6:00am, the 35 and over crowd was in the gym playing full court, I didn’t know those old dudes get up that early to ball. So, instead of doing my basketball drills, I just did my treadmill and stairs running; when I got finished I really felt good. I may have to wait until the school year is over to really get into my a.m. workouts, because my mom was rushing me like crazy when I got home from the gym. I know I had an hour to shower, get dressed, and eat, I just needed 15 minutes to relax first, she wasn’t having it…lol…by the time we got into the car for her to drop me off, she wasn’t speaking to me, I sure don’t like sending her off to work pissed off…lol.

Monday and Tuesday night, my school team had tournament games in Perth Amboy, NJ. We won both games, but I swear the rims are at least 10.5 - 11 feet. Instead of the rim being right underneath the square, it’s bolted on top of the square. Only a shoota would notice that..lol. Wednesday and Thursday, I did more cardio work; I know I need to get into better shape, this week I concentrated more on conditioning. After my cardio work I played a few games so I could go up and down the court.

Thursday after my workout I went over to Trenton Catholic Academy to watch my boy Naz Chew play. I haven’t watched the Varsity team play for a minute, but I see some changes have occurred with the starting lineup and my boy is getting some more minutes. They pulled out the win in a close game.

Friday, I did more of my cardio work, and later that night I went to the movies. I didn’t do my usual, more than one movie thing, because I was going to a workout at Life Center Academy early Saturday morning.

Saturday morning I went to the Rise-n-Shine Basketball workout at Life Center. I walked up in there and my boy Fresh was there for the workout too. We looked at each other, like what you doing here? It was the first workout for both of us. That's why I really love playing with Fresh, being on the same page is a good thing. I liked the workout and I loved how Chip the trainer made it feel like a personal training session. He really pushes you. I can’t wait to go back next week. Saturday afternoon my mom and I went over to my aunt's house, we were only gonna stay for about an hour, that hour turned into 7 hours, when my mom and her twin sister get together it's always like that, hours at a time. I chilled with my cousin Brandon and I beat him up a little bit in 2K10.

Sunday we had practice at Villanova. Before practice Coach P and Coach Fresh talked to us about how we played during the Clash for the Cup tournament and how they expect us to play going forward. We did our drills and everybody was working hard, there wasn’t a lot of playing around. At the end of practice we scrimmaged a little bit, Ronde who plays for Team Final older team came and worked out with us. During our scrimmage Ronde caught a OOP and dunked on somebody on our team (can’t name the player)… But if you see me and ask me I will tell you who it was...lol...The dunk was sick!! Our big boy Trey had a nasty dunk on somebody too…..again I can’t name the player..lol. What a way to end
practice.

Sunday night I watched the football game, nothing was super about it for me since my team wasn't in it, I'm glad Pittsburgh lost tho...lol didn't ,want to hear it from my teacher.

Basketball Spotlight has been contacted to appear at the John Lucas International Middle School Combine in Houston, TX. This event is an invitation only showcase displaying the absolute best grammar talent in the world. What’s happening everyone?

This past week was exciting because we finally finished up our mid-terms. There were some parts that I got stuck on in Math, but I was able to work out the problems and I think I did really well. . I will let you know how I do on those tests next week. Overall, I think I’m gonna come out smelling like a rose.

As far as basketball goes, we didn’t have many games. I just worked out a lot, doing ball handling, and some physical workouts. I got the chance to work out with my friend Jamal Lovett. The first day, Marcellus, Marquis and I went through his drills. The second time it was just me so I got a lot of work in. We worked on some new moves. He also showed me how to go into the defenders body and finish strong. It’s always fun to get those And1’s. We worked on conditioning, and shooting. He had me come off the screen, and have a quick release on my jump shot. Those are all things I have to use in my game. As far as watching basketball, I saw the Knicks lose to the 76rs in a really close game. I paid attention to Raymond Felton do the pick and roll with Amar’e Stoudemire. I watch them and try to work on that stuff with the big men on my team.

On Saturday we traveled to Jersey City to play the NJ Pirates. I think we were excited to play, but we made too many mistakes in the beginning and they were up by about 10. We had to chip away, we had a lot of rebounds, and we went to the hoop hard looking for fouls and mostly getting them. Coach Claudio told us to keep the pressure up, and keep going hard. We got to within 2 points late in the game. But we made a few turnovers and they scored off of them. We ended up losing by 5. I was really disappointed in how we dug ourselves a hole in the beginning. We have to get off to a much quicker start. After that game, I had a South Orange middle school game against Cedar Grove. I came at half time so I didn’t play that much. We ended up winning by 60 points.

At Sunday’s NJ Got Game practice, Coach Pete was mad about how we performed against the Pirates. He wasn’t at the game, but he heard about how bad our effort was. And that’s one thing you’re gonna do if you’re gonna play for Coach Pete and that’s give effort! Every mistake we made in a drill, we ran suicides. It was tiring but it makes us pay attention to all the little details that will get us killed. They add up in games and we have to clean that up if we expect to win. Coach Pete also said that we are not the most talented team, but we have to make up for it by being smarter and work harder than our opponent.

After practice I went home and watched the Super Bowl. My team the Dolphins wasn’t in the game so it wasn’t too exciting for me, but it was fun to watch. I’m glad the underdogs won! Congrats to the cheeseheads of Green Bay! LOL

Basketball Spotlight and Mid Atlantic AAU Present Elite 80 Expo April 2nd

On April 2, 2011 Basketball Spotlight and Middle Atlantic AAU will be joining forces for the Elite 80 Expo. The Elite 80 Expo brings together the Top 80 8th Graders in the region for a day of basketball and education. Basketball Spotlight will be providing written and video coverage of this event. This will be the final individual showcase event for the members of the Class of 2015. We will also use this event for our Top 100 rankings and selections for the Basketball Spotlight J.E.M. All Star Classic in August.

Inside The Clash For The Cup 14U: West Coast Invasion

Cali Styles Handled Their Business

When Cali Style came east with only 6 players I didn’t think they would run the table. They played some of the top teams in the region including Team Final, Philly Aztecs, Team Scan and Team Rebels before raising the banner. I have to take my hat off for the boys from the Bay State. They came, they saw and the conquered. Hopefully we will get to see this squad again.

The Blues (14U Players Get Busy In Blue Division)

Mikey Dixon (Positive Force)- Dixon went on a scoring rampage at the Clash For The Cup. He averaged over 20 points a contest including a huge 27 points against Team MVP. It seems like the youngster has found a home. We will be watching.

Jack Laffy (JS Devils)- Laffy continued his great play this season. He averaged 16 points including 24 points against Mid Jersey Heat. The forward is really showing he can contribute on the wing which is a good sign.

Tony Carr (Philly Triple Threat)- Carr was playing up but ran the show like a true floor general. Tony understands how to play within himself and set up teammates for easy buckets. He’s a throwback player and that should benefit him in the future.

PV power DC Assault, Team Scan, and Philly Triple Threat all have 5 points and New Heights follows with 4. Cali Style ran into a tough Team IZOD squad in pool play and was defeated. This loss woke up the West Coast crew and they mercy ruled their way to the championship. When we did the 11U preview we had no idea Natural Ballers would be the last team standing in the loaded 11U division. But the Garden State boys got it done with the 1-2 punch of Kayshawn McMahon and Jordan Taylor. Now they go from the hunters to being hunted. They collected 5 points with their crown and now we will see if they have enough in the tank to make it to Summer Slam.

Daniel Klosk used the Clash For The Cup to step into the spotlight. He led the team in scoring and helped his crew reach the final four. The scoring guard has the size and the stroke to make an immediate impact on this level.
