Gym Rat Midnight Madness Recap: Middle School Elite Game

MVP's Austin Colbert and Sha Sha Matthews

MVP Austin Colbert scored 15 points and Dwayne Foreman added 13 markers as the Red team stormed past the White team 70-39 in the Middle School Elite Game of the Gym Rat Midnight Madness. Sha Sha Mathews led the White team with 13 points in the loss and was rewarded MVP.

Top Performers

(Red Team)

Austin Colbert Forward (Chesapeake, VA)- He’s 6’8 and he has the goods. The youngster knows how to establish position and is eager to get his hands on the pill. He has some polished post moves and even uses his off hand on finishes. Some people that the true center is out of basketball but in a few years Colbert might have them singing a different tune.

Dwayne Foreman Guard (Spring Valley, NY)- The lefty had his moments and used them wisely. He showed the ability to finish which is his forte and even showed some range knocking down a NBA length 3-ball. I liked the energy he brought in the 2nd Half and he seemed to be enjoying himself on the floor. It should be an interesting year for Foreman.

Amir Middred Forward (Camden, NJ)- Sometimes a player doesn’t have to light up the scoreboard for you to see his skills and today that player was Middred. Amir has a Billy Owens type of game meaning he has a sure fire forward’s body but handles the pill like a guard. Amir also lends a hand on the glass and is able to start a fast break himself. I see something special in this player.

Sheppard Gardner Guard (Chester, PA)- The 7th Grade used the 2nd half to remind people of his skill set. Gardner caught fire from the perimeter, scored in the open floor and punished defenders in traffic. After using the first half to get used to the games pace, Sheppard confidence soared in the second stanza. He proved he belonged and more.

Aaron McGlawn Guard (Philadelphia, PA)- I was very impressed with the way this point guard pushed the rock and put pressure on the defense. He’s equally effective dribbling with either hand and has added a nice floater to the arsenal. He beat several defenders off the bounce and stayed in attack mode the entire contest.

Devon Bell Guard (Voorhees, NJ)- Bell is a southpaw combo guard that likes to initiate contact when going to the basket. He drives well from the wing and does have some decent touch on his outside shot. Bell also digs in on defense and will occasionally hit the boards to support his team.

Yusef Yacob Guard (Chester, PA)- Yacob has a very slim build but loves to throw his body into shot blockers when scoring in the lane. He has a deceptive handle but the quickness to get to the cup. He also looks like he has a few more inches to add to his frame.

(White Team)

Sha Sha Matthews Guard (Sydney, VA)- Matthews won MVP honors for the White Team after playing like a true showman during the game. The Virginia point guard has tremendous poise and knows how to dip in and out of traffic while handling the pill. Sha Sha is a pass first point guard and seems to enjoy the role.

Austin Tilghman Guard (Wilmington, DE)- Tilghman played with tremendous toughness for his team. The physical guard hit the boards hard and tried everything he could to get his squad going. If his teammates would have match his intensity the outcome would have been a little closer.

Miles Overton Guard (Chester, PA)- The son of the former NBA player Doug Overton has some versatility to his game. I like his size for the wing on this level and how he gets rid of defenders with dribble moves. Overton also has the ability to create his own shot which is important on any level.

Ryan Bland Forward (Sicklerville, NJ)- The wide body is light on his feet and has very soft touch near the tin. He matched up with Alston Colbert which would have been a tough duty for anyone. Bland held his ground and made his presence felt. I see good things for him in the future.

Gym Rat Midnight Madness Recap: Baby Ballers Game

MVP's Malik Ellison and Kamari Peel

MVP Malik Ellison scored 16 points and Trey Lowe had a good showing as the White Team held on to beat the Red Team 48-43 in the Baby Ballers Game of the Gym Rat Midnight Madness.

Top Performers
(White Team)

Malik Ellison Guard (Voorhees, NJ)- It was no surprise that that he left with the MVP because he got going towards the basket he was too difficult to defend. Malik used strength, size and quickness to get anywhere he wanted on the floor while also rebounding inside for his club. In the open floor he exploded and made most of the finishes look to easy. The stage lights were on again and he performed.

Trey Lowe Guard (Ewing, NJ)- Speaking of the stage the Ewing product stepped up in a big way. I like the control he possesses on the floor. He has the knack for scoring and knows how to get out quick on transition. Lowe also showed some point guard instincts in terms of passing while setting up teammates.

Robert DE Persia Guard (Cherry Hill, NJ)- The kid nicknamed “Dirt” did a tremendous job on defense moving his feet and also dazzled the crowd with some crafty offensive moves. He had one hesitation move that froze the defender in his tracks. He loves Steve Nash’s game and I can tell.

Nick DE Persia Guard (Cherry Hill, NJ)- The other DE Persia twin Nick also has a hard nose style of game but prefers the perimeter shot more than his brother. He hustles similar on defense but doesn’t handle ball as much as Robert. I like the Cherry Hill Duo.

Adam Perry Guard (Westhampton, NJ)- Perry has good control when dribbling the basketball. He never seems to be playing out of control and gets his shot off no matter the size of the defenders. The lefty has nice range on his outside shot and shoots the floater with great confidence.

Jeff Thompson Guard (Voorhees, NJ)- Thompson is athletic on this level and plays with a lot of energy. He raced down the floor while scoring in transition and kept the ball alive inside with hustle plays. As he gets older you will see him transcend to the wing more.

Randall West Forward (Moorestown, NJ)- West was forced to play inside being the tallest guy on his team. He wasn’t totally out of position but you can see that he’s more comfortable on the wing. I like his game facing the basket and he does handle the rock a little.

(Red Team)

Kamari Peel Forward (Philadelphia, PA)- Peel won MVP for the Red Team after having an all around effort. He scored inside, blocked shots and rebounded like a Mad Man. Peel has some concept of post moves but still needs a lot of work which is normal considering he’s a 6th Grader. Expect a long wiry prospect in a few years.

Vincent Jackson Guard (Cherry Hill, NJ)- I saw another side of VJ’s game. He showed me the point guard pass first and create version. Jackson attacked often and good opportunities inside the lane. He either dished off to teammates or made his way to the free throw line. He has a good basketball IQ.

Mikey Dixon Guard (New Castle, DE)- As previously written Dixon has answered the bell once again and will be taking the trip to the Garden State. Expect some serious explosions once he has the rock in his hands. This guard has game.

Steve Jordan Guard (Philadelphia, PA)- Jordan will be represented the Philly and will bring the toughness required. He has a steady handle and knows how to get his teammates involved. Keep a close eye on his game you should like it.

Trey Lowe Guard (Ewing, NJ)- Lowe is out to prove his among the elite in the region. The crafty guard is capable of getting hot and scoring in bunches. He also knows how to run a team by setting up the offense. He should be ready for the stage.

Mikey Dixon Delaware's Little Big Man

If you know Mikey Dixon than you know he’s loves a challenge. Delaware’s Little Big Man has been the smallest player on the floor most of his short career but that hasn’t stopped him from turning heads each time he touches the hardwood. I got a chance to check out Dixon at several events including the Jr. All American and the Hoop Group Jr. Elite Camp where he won MVP. After watching him rock one thing is edvident, if you are going against him you better bring your lunch because Dixon goes hard buzzer to buzzer and plays to win. He has point guard savvy and is willing to take the big shot whenever he has to. His next stop apparently will be the Gym Rat Midnight Madness this weekend in Cherry Hill, NJ and Madness coordinator Vince Jackson agrees with our assessment of Dixon. “We had to have Mikey in this event because he’s proven that he can get it done at any venue. It’s an opportunity to see him against the best and I look forward to it”. Telling from his past look for Dixon to prove he was worthy of the invite.

Diary Of A Baller: Jason Boswell Entry #1

Wassup basketball world, my name is Jason "Smooth Boogie" Boswell and I'm writing this diary on Basketball Spotlight to inform you guys on my basketball experiences as a 8th grader playing for Long Island Lightning. I hope you enjoy it and think it will be a real treat for everyone.

Here’s my first entry.

Last Friday night I had a game with New York Patriots in the Gauchos Roundball Classic. We played the Running Rebels they are a scrappy team so we struggled early. I found my touch though and literally scored every time I touched the ball. I ended the game with about 22 pts and about 7 boards. I had a lot of help from St. Raymond’s freshmen Myron Hickman and Shamgod Wells. On Saturday I went to IS8 to watch my man Durand Scott (Rice) play with the NY Gauchos, he played exceptionally well and I learn something every time I watch him play. The rest of my week was fairly boring. I worked out with my dad and Patriots coach Elliot Rosado and that's it. Well I will see you guys next week with hopefully something more exciting.

Introducing: Jackson Davis

Potential is a term that many basketball experts love to use nowadays. They try to predict how a player will develop in a few years. I also have used the term frequently when describing a player and this word doesn’t fit any player more than Jackson Davis from Lexington, KY. Davis stands about 6’5 right now and is oozing with basketball promise. I got a chance to check out Jackson at the Hoop Dreams Showcase and I was very impressed with the package I saw. He has the frame of a future 6’10 or 7 footer and doesn’t have control of his body thus far which is a plus because he’s only a 7th grader. His skills are still developing on the offensive end but on the defensive side he blocks nearly every shot in his vicinity. I haven’t seen every Class of 2014 player in the Blue Grass State but I think in terms of potential he should be rated #1 right now. We will keep you tuned into Jackson Davis’s progress.

Basketball Spotlight Then and Now Feat. Doron Lamb

Then : I first noticed Lamb playing with the Gauchos 13 and Under group at the Spring Fling two years ago. I watched as the then skinny Lamb made defenders pay for backing off him by nailing shots from everywhere on the floor. He finished the tourney as an All Tournament honoree. The next spring Doron hit the AAU road with that powerful Team Next squad coached by Paul Suber which won every game until losing in the AAU National Elite 8. While with Team Next I saw Doron began to attack the basket more off the dribble. He would freeze defenders with hesitation dribbles and crossovers. With his jump shot still intact Lamb will become a dangerous prospect.

Now: I guess I was right back then as Lamb has surfaced at Oak Hill Academy after spending two seasons at Bishop Loughlin in New York. He had a strong summer on the circuit with the Gauchos and is considered one of the top juniors in the country. He also is one of the most sought after recruits in the country. This has been a Basketball Spotlight Flashback. Stay tune for plenty more coming shortly.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Kavon Stewart - Paterson's Point Man

Kavon Stewart is regarded as the top 8th grade point guard in New Jersey. Stewart wasn’t given this title because he plays for the best team or goes to certain camps. He earned it on the floor. Nowadays many players with Stewart’s talent are very selective about what events or tournaments they attend. Not Kavon, he’s a throw back and came be seen anywhere a Paterson squad is getting it in. I’ve caught him balling in everything from state tournaments, to elite camps and even outside summer leagues. No matter what’s the arena the Paterson Point Man sets the stage and delivers. His AAU coach Jamal Slappy agrees "Kavon's doesn't care what type of game or event he's playing in if it's basketball he's there. He's definitely old school". Just check his resume he seems to always make it to the championship in whatever league or tournament he enters. If this was boxing he would pound for pound one of the best.

Class 2013 Player Profile: Aziz Gilliam

Name: Aziz Gilliam

AAU Team: Next Generation

Position: Point Guard

Height: 5’9

Breakdown:
Newark has been a hot bed for point guards for years. Recently I visited the Zoo Crew Summer League and ran into Aziz Gilliam who might be next in line. Gilliam has a wicked handle and the play making ability that can control a ball game. He breaks down defenders with variety of moves and knows how to get his shot off over defenders. In the game I saw Aziz almost propelled his team to the win late in the contest. We will keep an eye on the next Brick City floor general.

Basketball Spotlight Book of The Week: The Last Shot by Darcy Frey

The Last Shot, Darcy Frey's critically acclaimed portrait of Marbury and his teammates during their playing days at Abraham Lincoln High School in Coney Island. The Last Shot is now available in a special Mariner paperback edition, with a new, up-to-date afterword by the author.

First published by Houghton Mifflin in 1994, The Last Shot has become a classic praised for its honest, startling, and unforgettable portrayal of four young men battling poverty, family problems, and the lure of crime and drugs for a chance at the NCAA and an escape from inner-city life.

The Last Shot gives readers an unforgettable and deeply intimate portrait of Marbury as a superstar in the making:

• The searing deprivation of his upbringing in the Coney Island projects
• His prodigious ability with a basketball even at the age of 14
• The pressures he faced both on the court and in the classroom
• The peculiar demands that were placed on him as his three older brothers tried — and failed — to make it to the pros.

Remarkably prescient, The Last Shot is a controversial and poignant exposé of big-time New York City basketball, whose insights have never been as relevant as they are today, and an in-depth look at the boy who became one of the most talked about stars of the NBA.

Basketball Spotlight Class 2012 Elite 50 (Goodbye Regional Rankings)

Kyle Anderson Region's #1 Player Class 2012

Basketball Spotlight would like to say goodbye and congratulations to the Class of 2012. I have seen many of you play throughout the years and was privileged to have witnessed some great performances. I also would like give a special thanks the Kyle Anderson for the great job he did on the Diary Of A Baller. Now as our gift to the Class of 2012 we would like to release our Elite 50 regional player rankings. These rankings were only released because you guys are considered high school students now. Please don’t take this list that serious it’s just our opinion. Basketball Spotlight will continue to be non-biased towards or for any AAU Team or Sneaker Affiliation.

Basketball Spotlight Class of 2012 Elite 50 Regional Rankings

1. Kyle Anderson 6’6 Guard (Fairlawn, NJ)- Anderson got our nod as the lanky and towering point guard guided one team to a National Title after guiding another to the Las Vegas Main Event crown. The Shawn Livingston type dazzled crowds coast to coast with his slick passes and clutch play. He should be an instant impact on the high school level at Paterson Catholic. Check out his highlights from the AAU Nationals. Highlights

2. Nkereum Okoro 6’4 Guard (Bronx, NY)- When teammates finish 1and 2 it lets you know how strong the Lightning were. Okoro has an argument for the number 1 spot has the smooth wing player does damage in some many different ways. He will can the jumper or create his own shot off the dribble. He also knows how to maneuver on the baseline for easy buckets or free throw trips.

3. Savon Goodman 6’4 Forward (Philadelphia, PA)- Goodman had the goods this year. I was really impressed with his perimeter skills and his ability to get teammates involved. Savon has a nice build and plays above the rim at times. He also can hurt you by how hard he plays and willingness to play defense. His name should ring bells in the City of Brotherly Love early and often.

4. Amile Jefferson 6’5 Forward (Philadelphia, PA)- The Real Deal has a tremendous future ahead of him especially if he grows at least 3 more inches while in high school. He has polished lost post moves and excels at changing or blocking shots on the defensive end. The development of his perimeter game will be a key to his future endeavors.

5. Thaddeus Hall 6’3 Guard (New York, NY)- There’s no denying Hall’s athleticism and his ability as a playmaker. The lefty can get to the rack with good speed and power. When he gets to the rack he can finish in traffic or above the rim. Thaddeus also has a chance to fly up this ladder. He also is apparently attending Rice.

6. Rashard Andrews 6’4 Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Don’t be surprised when it’s said and done that Andrews rises to the top of this list. I see so many interesting things in his game. First of all he seems to have a few more inches to grow which is always important, then it appears that he is one is way to become a fluid wing player and finally he seems to have a good attitude and serious work ethic to get better.

7. Dashawn Suber 5’11 Guard (Spring Valley, NY)- The lefty will put up huge numbers against any opponents. It’s virtually impossible to keep him away from the basket off the dribble. Suber has been around the game for years and uses his experience to outwit opponents. Word is he’s headed to Rice. If so than he should develop into something serious.

8. Omar Calhoun 6’3 Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Calhoun is the prototype two-guard. He has size, ball handling and a jumper that can hurt you when he is on. I like his body control and ability to get to the tin while penetrating. If he gets the freedom in high school he could flourish into a serious stud. Think about Paul Pierce style of play.

9. Labrent Walker 6’2 Guard (Queens, NY)- If you want excitement look no further than Mr. Walker. The lefty lives to shack defenders with his crossover before finishing above shot blockers. His handle and decision making has improved but still needs to fine tune his outside shot which can be streaky at times. He will look very good in an open floor system.

10. Daniel Dingle 6’5 Forward (Bronx, NY)- Dingle has been one of the top power forwards on this age level for years. He has grown gradually over that time period and skills have also picked up. Dingle is capable of hitting the glass and scoring inside with touch.

11. Andre Horne 6’2 Guard (Wilmington, DE)

12. Dennis Green 6’0 Guard (New York, NY)

13. Richard Hoskins 6’0 Guard (Philadelphia, PA)

14. Rahmir Jefferson 6’4 Forward (Chester, PA)
