One On One Feat. Roderick Caldwell (Cincinnati Lakers)

Sometimes a player grows on you over a weekend. I experienced that with Roderick Caldwell of the Cincinnati Lakers. At first glance Caldwell appeared to be a decent point guard but by Sunday night he had me watching his every move. He’s not the quickest guard in the world but his savvy play and jump shot reminds me of BJ Armstrong during his days at the University of Iowa (You Tube Him). I got a chance to chat with Roderick and pick his brain. Here’s our One on One.

One On One

BS: What school do you attend?
RC: Westwood Elementary School (Dayton, Ohio)

BS: Who’s your favorite player?
RC: Allen Iverson because he’s quick and understands the game.

BS: What’s the strongest part of your game?
RC: I would have to say my jump shot.

BS: What part of your game needs the most improvement?
RC: I would have to say my speed and agility.

BS: If you could select any college right now, where would you go?
RC: Ohio State, I like their colors and their basketball program.

BS: Who’s your favorite rapper?
RC: LiL Wayne, he’s just the hottest right now.

BS: If you could have dinner with one famous person, who would you select?
RC: Chris Paul because I would ask him to teach me some of his moves.

BS: What do you do when you are not playing basketball?
RC: Play outside with my friends.

BS: What are your favorite sneakers?
RC: Jordan’s of course.

In The Spotlight: DJ Tyree

Name: Dale “DJ” Tyree

AAU Team: All Ohio Red

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2016

Breakdown: It’s always a joy to watch a point guard with a flashy handle but still knows how to produce. Tyree showed me that this weekend at the Best Of The Best Showcase. He handle is crazy and he loves putting on a little show for the spectators. Tyree also has a decent looking jumper and shows the knack to score. Defenders tape your ankles when guarding this kid.

Flashback: Tyreke Evans and Korie Lucious

Korie Lucious, Mike Melton and Tyreke Evans (2004 Primetime Shootout)

Before Tyreke Evans was in quest of the NBA Rookie of the Year and Korie Lucious was nailing buzzer beaters sending Michigan State to the Sweet 16. We were chilling at the Primetime Shootout. Wow I’m getting old. Go get them boys. Congrats on the success. Now Basketball Spotlight is looking for the Next Stars.

Korie Lucious Buzzer Beater

Tyreke Evans Rookie Of The Year Highlights

One On One Feat. Nick Ward (Ohio Warriors)

Every coach loves to have a post player that can score. Therefore the coach for Ohio Warriors should be smiling ear to ear to have Nick Ward. Ward is a southpaw post player with the interior scoring ability of a young Sam Perkins. In his final game of the Best Of The Best Showcase he pumped in 31 points a tough loss. We got a chance to sit down and talk to Nick before he left the building. Here’s our One on One.

One On One

BS: What school do you attend?
NW: Gahanna Middle School outside of Columbus, Ohio.

BS: Who’s your favorite player?
NW: Kevin Garnett because he’s a post player like me and a very hard worker.

BS: What’s the strongest part of your game?
NW: My post moves and rebounding.

BS: If you could pick a college tomorrow where would you go?
NW: North Carolina, because my mom loves the school.

BS: What part of your game needs the most improvement?
NW: I would say my outside shooting.

BS: Who’s your favorite rapper?
NW: LiL Wayne, he’s just the best.

BS: If you could have dinner with one famous person, who would you select?
NW: Lebron James because he’s a great player and role model.

Baby Ballerz Feat. Corry Long

Name: Corry Long

AAU Team: Elite Cavaliers

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2017

Breakdown: In a couple of years this name should become big in Ohio. Corry is a lengthy guard with ball handling and scoring ability. I got a chance to see show his stuff against the Detroit Showtime Select. He didn’t have a huge scoring game but you can see the potential oozing from his veins.

In The Spotlight: Matthew Morgan

Name: Matthew Morgan

AAU Team: QCAA Force (North Carolina)

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2016

Breakdown: Morgan plays alongside 6’9 Raekwon Long. During their quarterfinal match up with D One Greyhounds he led the team in scoring while getting to the rack at will. He handles the rock with both hands and has good court vision for a player his age. Keep an eye on this kid if you are in the North Carolina area.

Monday, March 22, 2010

Baby Ballerz Feat. Marcus Barton

Name: Marcus Barton

AAU Team: Elite Cavaliers

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2017

Breakdown: I checked out Marcus during their semifinal game against Detroit Showtime Select. His team took a tough loss but this youngster brought his game. Barton scored driving to the cup and dropping in the pull up. I love his confidence and the way he bangs on his heart after making a big play. You have to love this kid’s swagger.

One On One Feat. Stephen Sosa (Full Court Athletes)

Being fundamentally sound is one of the best attributes for a player today. Sometimes it can determine if a player can help his team win a game or gain himself a scholarship. Stephen Sosa of Texas understands this and displays this quality of the floor. I got a chance to check out Stephen in Ohio at the Best Of The Best Showcase and used his fundamentals to punish opponents. I got a chance to sit down with him and pick his mind a little. Here’s our One On One!

One On One

BS: What school do you attend?
SS: Hill Elementary School (Austin, Texas)

BS: Who is your favorite player?
SS: Dwight Howard because he plays inside like me. I try to pattern my game after his.

BS: What’s the strongest part of your game?
SS: On the post while using my up and under move.

BS: What part of your game do you feel needs a little improvement?
SS: I feel I can be a little more aggressive at times.

BS: If you could go to college tomorrow what school would you select?
SS: University of Texas because I love their program.

BS: If you could have dinner with one famous person, who would you pick?
SS: Lebron James because I think he’s the best in the NBA.

Coach's Corner Feat. Ron Hicks (Elite Cavaliers)

Ron Hicks the coach for the Elite Cavaliers is use to success on the basketball court. His Elite Cavaliers squad formerly the Cincinnati Knights has finished in the Top 3 nationally (including 2 National titles) the last four years. We got a chance to sit down with Hicks at the Elite Cavaliers tourney in Ohio to get his thoughts about his program. Here’s Coach’s Corner:

BS: How did your program begin?
RH: In 2004 we took a bunch of 2nd Graders together to form an elite basketball program.

BS: What is the mission of your program?
RH: Well we want to give the players a chance to play basketball on a high level and hopefully get a scholarship. We also want to teach life skills through basketball.

BS: Talk a little about your team’s success?
RH: Well since we started we have won two nationals titles and never finished lower than #3 in the country.

BS: What prompt the move from the Cincinnati Knights?
RH: I felt it was time to move into a different direction and have a new beginning.

BS: Having so much early success, how do you keep your kids motivated?
RH: They are self driven and they know we always have a target on our backs. We understand that everyone will give us their best game.

BS: What’s your most memorable moment?
RH: When we won the national title last summer. Our opponents were bigger and we had to overcome so much.

BS: Who are your biggest rivals?
RH: The Cincinnati Lakers by far.

BS: What teams do you look forward to playing this year?
RH: We want the Memphis War Eagles, Atlanta Celtics and Wisconsin Playground Warriors.

BS: Thanks for your time Ron.
RH: Okay Mike.

Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase 11U Championship Recap: Indy Hoosiers Storm Past Detroit Showtime

Indy Hoosiers Cruise To Title

Mike Porter scored 13 points including 3 treys and Paul Scruggs added 10 markers as the Indy Hoosiers defeated Detroit Showtime Select 53-30 to win the Best Of The Best Showcase 11U Championship. Kamari Newman finished with 8 points for Detroit Showtime in the loss.

Top Performers

Mike Porter Forward (Indy Hoosiers)- Porter has a pure stroke and he used it well in the finals. He’s difficult to guard at this age because of his size and ability to put the rock on the floor. Once he dribbles into the lane he uses his wingspan to stretch to the basket.

Paul Scruggs Forward (Indy Hoosiers)- Look out 11U teams because Scruggs will be hard to contain in this age group. This 6’0 forward is very athletic and even handles the pill like a guard. On defense he blocks shots regularly and controls the glass.

Kris Wilkes Forward (Indy Hoosiers)- I like this kids versatility. He has long arms and can play the guard spot or the forward. During the game he scored the rock and did a lot of the small things for his team to win. His best basketball is ahead of him.

Gary Trent Jr. Guard (Indy Hoosiers)- The son of the former NBA player plays the point for this squad. He has a crisp handle and looks to score. He enjoys getting out into transition and making things happen. The basketball pedigree is definitely apparent.

Chris Rollins Guard (Detroit Showtime)- Rollins play in the semifinal propelled his squad to the chip. He has a natural feel for the game and can score from any angle. Once he gets into the open floor the defender is at his mercy because of his ball handling and slick moves.

Kamari Newman Guard (Detroit Showtime)- Newman is a slasher that finishes off plays in transition and will stick his head inside for a rebound. On defense his long arms help him play the passing lanes and collect steals.

Cedric Lattimore Forward (Detroit Lattimore)- The big fella punished the Elite Cavs in the semifinals. He has soft hands and a wide frame that he used to gather position.

Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase 12U Championship Recap: Rytes Warriors Just Too Much

Rytes Warriors Run Away With The Crown

Carsen Edwards scored 18 points and Courtney Lark added 11 markers as the Rytes Warriors stormed past the Cincinnati Lakers 66-41 to win the Best Of The Best Showcase 12U Championship. Jarron Cumberland finished with 14 points for the Lakers in the loss.

Top Performers

Carsen Edwards Guard (Rytes Warriors)- Edwards showed his special talent in the finals by destroying the Lakers defense. He scored on runners and tough layups in traffic. He seems like he teases shot blockers with the rock before floating the rock over their out stretched arms. No one can stay in front of this kid because of his quickness. Yes, he has earned a nickname. Introducing Carsen “The Blur” Edwards.

Courtney Lark Forward (Rytes Warriors)- Lark did heavy damage on the glass which gave his squad second chance opportunities. His leaping ability is outstanding on this level and his will to get the rock stood out. I think he will be a wing forward in the future.

De’Aaron Fox Guard (Rytes Warriors)- Fox made an immediate impact on the offensive end by crossing defenders and getting into the lane. The southpaw scored on a few tough finishes in the lane. On defense he was a hawk in the passing lane.

Joseph Caldwell Guard (Ryte Warriors)- Speaking of defense Caldwell locked down any ball handler in sight. This youngster had several steals by stripping opposing point guards and helping his team get into transition. Once he had the rock his superb ball handling and speed took over. Mark my words this kid will be a special one.

Jarron Cumberland Forward (Cincinnati Lakers)- Cumberland probably was wore out because of his performance in the semifinals. He torched his former squad with driving layups and big buckets to propel them to the finals. I can tell this kid has been working hard on his game.

Ashon Riggins Guard (Cincinnati Lakers)- Riggins also spent a lot of energy during the semifinals. The big guard made some big plays down the stretch against the Elite Cavaliers even knocking down a few big treys. During the finals he tried to get it going but fatigue set in.

Roderick Caldwell Guard (Cincinnati Lakers)- By the conclusion of the weekend Caldwell turned into one of my favorite point guards. In the semifinals he handled the Cavaliers full court blitz and was also able to get the scoring going himself. His poise and toughness will take him a long way.

Introducing Raekwon Long (6'9 6th Grader)

Raekwon Long QCAA AAU (Charlotte, North Carolina)

Any 6’9 basketball player will garner attention wants they step into the gym but when they are playing 12U AAU they command full attention. Meet Raekwon Long of Charlotte, North Carolina. Long plays for the QCAA AAU squad while standing 6’9 and weighing 230 pounds. As you could imagine Raekwon is still developing on the floor but he’s potential is scary. His coach Corey Baker has taken the challenge of developing this gentle giant. “This is his first year playing and right now we have him a big man coach and personal trainer. He’s teaching Raekwon to keep the ball high and use proper footwork” Baker said.

On this level Raekwon can block shots, rebound and score without leaving his feet. Once he gets stronger and puts everything together we might be looking at the next Shaq. Baker also believes he has a bright future.”Right now he wears a size 20 shoe and the doctors have charted him to grow at least 7’5” Baker finished. Hopefully we can get Long and his team up to a Basketball Spotlight event soon.

Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase Day 1 12U: Top Point Guards

Caleb Tregre (Elite Cavaliers)

The Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase had plenty of talent. Basketball Spotlight was in the building and we decided to break our reports down by position. Finally, here’s a breakdown of the top floor generals in the building.

Day 1 Top Performers (Point Guards)

Caleb Tregre (Elite Cavaliers, Ohio)- Tregre might be the top floor general in the country for this age level. He showed tremendous poise and court savvy against the Full Court Athletes. Every time things got a little rattled Caleb settled his squad and reset the tempo. He also will drain a big trey if you back off him.

Corey Hicks (Detroit Showtime)- Hicks is a serious point guard that puts tremendous pressure on the defense. His crossover is strong, crisp and allows him to score at will. He had defenders on skates at games. This Motown product name will ring bells for a long time.

Carsen Edwards (Rytes Warriors, Texas)- Edwards is as tough as they come. He pushes the rock like a blur and squeezes between defenders very easily. The stage was big against the Cincinnati Lakers and Carsen stepped up before fouling out on a controversial call. This kid is serious.

Joseph Caldwell (Rytes Warriors, Texas)- Caldwell also stepped up against the Lakers. His defensive pressure is outstanding and he never stops moving. On offense he isn’t afraid to take the big shot and gets into the lane whenever he wants. His ball handling was a joy to watch.

Julian Miranda (Full Court Athletes, Texas)- Miranda was perhaps the shortest point guard in the building but played like a giant. His court vision was evident early and often as he breezed past defenders. Miranda played well against the Elite Cavaliers before wearing down late in the game.

Kyran McClure (Ohio Warriors)- McClure has a Jalen Rose type game. He’s a lanky southpaw with good size and scoring ability. He doesn’t have blinding speed but makes up for it with his length and a high basketball IQ. Size matters

Roderick Caldwell (Cincinnati Lakers)- Caldwell managed the game well against the Rytes Warriors. He’s not as flashes as others on this list but his substance is apparent. He read the defense well and drained a long trey to tie the game up late. He’s very smooth with the rock.

Brandon Knapper (Charleston Cavaliers)- Speaking of smooth look no further than Knapper. Brandon crossed several defenders when playing against the Ohio Prep Hoyas. His ball handling allowed him to get anywhere on the floor. Once he got into the lane his scoring ability took over. Dude is nice!

Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase Day 1 12U: Top Scoring Guards

Ashon Riggins (Cincinnati Lakers)

The Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase had plenty of talent. Basketball Spotlight was in the building and we decided to break our reports down by position. Next we take a look at the top scoring guards that caught our eye today.

Day 1 Top Performers (Scoring Guards)

Ashon Riggins (Cincinnati Lakers)- Some might call Riggins a point guard because of his court vision. But he showed his scoring prowess down the stretch against the Rytes Warriors. His size, ball handling and slick moves make him nearly impossible to guard on this level. His needs to work on his outside shot but other than that he’s the total package.

Jaron Cumberland (Cincinnati Lakers)- Yes Cumberland has a new team and transformed his game into a combo guard. He had a tough time finishing off plays today but I was impressed with his improved ball handling and outside shot form. He seemed to be very comfortable on the wing.

John Bubenhofer (Cincinnati Lakers)- John has a pure stroke from mid range or deep on the floor. He’s tough as nails and moves his feet well on defense. Things got kind of tight at the end of the game but John stayed strong. This kid can stroke it.

Gary Collins (Detroit Showtime Select)- Collins can play either guard spot but has a scorer’s mentality. He’s very strong with the rock and will pull up instantly off the dribble. Defensively, he’s very tough while harassing ball handlers. I also love his ability to finish off plays with either hand.

Josh Hall (Rytes Warriors, Texas)- Hall has big time potential. He can stroke the rock, put it on the floor and score in traffic. He also has the wingspan the recruiters dream about. Josh has a silky smooth game and looked good in both outings.

Jordan Houston (Rytes Warriors, Texas)- Houston is a combo guard that does it all. He plays defense 94 feet and snatching numerous steals. Offensively he stroked a trey down the stretch against the Cincy Lakers and attacked off the dribble. Keep your eye on this baller.

De’Aaron Fox (Rytes Warriors, Texas)- Fox is a wiry wing player. He can guard the wing or the post. When the other guards got in trouble he took over the ball handling duties. For some reason he reminds me of former UNLV great Stacy Augmon.

Devante Waldon (Full Court Athletes, Texas)- Waldon is a punishing guard that muscles his way to the cup on demand. He went to work against the PTS Pistons while scoring several buckets. His strength stands out on this level.

Parcell Tyler (SCAA Buckeyes, Ohio)- I like Tyler’s size and scoring ability for his position. He’s bigger than other guards thus he can post up and hit the glass when needed. His size also allows him to absorb contact before finishing.

Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase Day 1 12U: Top Forwards

Stephen Sosa (Full Court Athletes, Texas)

The Elite Cavaliers Best Of The Best Showcase had plenty of talent. Basketball Spotlight was in the building and we decided to break our reports down by position. We will begin with the forwards that impressed us on Day 1.

Day 1 Top Performers (Forwards)

Stephen Sosa (Full Court Athletes, Texas)- It will be hard to find another post player more fundamentally sound than Sosa. This kid loves using the up and under move while kissing the rock off the glass. He also has great touch facing the basket. In their showdown with the Elite Cavaliers he carried the squad as long as he could. He put in major work today.

Logan Ray (Full Court Athletes, Texas)- Sosa’s teammate Logan loves hitting the boards on the weak side and finishing in transition. He seems to have long limbs, which means a growth spurt will be coming soon. I like his skill set and how he hammers the boards. Look for him to have a bright future.

Courtney Lark (Rytes Warriors, Texas)- Lark is a quick athlete that plays the passing lanes and loves to get out in the open floor. He stepped his game up against the Cincinnati Lakers by being active inside and marching to the charity stripe. He’s very efficient shooting free throws.

Damion Blythe (Cincinnati Lakers, Ohio)- Blythe does all the dirty work inside for the Lakers. He played good interior defense, hit the glass and scored on put backs. Other players might get the lime light but his play is needed for them to be successful.

Leon Davis (Elite Cavaliers, Ohio)- Davis exploded to the hole for buckets in the 2nd half against the FC Athletes. I like his ball handling for his size and his ability to create off the bounce. He’s playing the forward spot on this level but will transform to a guard in the near future.

Nick Ward (Ohio Warriors)- The southpaw went to work against Detroit Showtime. He caught the rock either on the high post or low blocks and scored with ease. He’s nimble on his feet and knows how to maneuver around shot blockers. This kid can flat out score.

Anthony Dockery (Prep Hoyas, Ohio)- Dockery was an animal on the glass and scoring inside. He powered his way to the cup in transition and established post position in the half court set. He’s tough to handle on this level but he will have to develop his outside shot and ball handling soon.

James Manns (SCAA Buckeyes, Ohio)- Manns upside seems to be tremendous. He’s currently standing about 6’4 and has the lanky build. He alters shots when playing post defense and can score in the lane. What really impressed me was his willingness to handle the rock. He might be a big time wing one day.

Zach Warden (Charleston Cavaliers, Ohio)- Warden’s length helps him impact the game on both ends. He alters shots and snatches rebounds before others can grab them. He also has good touch around the cup.
