Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic Feature: Introducing Isaiah Todd!

Todd Ready For Breakout

True “Hoop Junkies” know the name Isaiah Todd. The Maryland-born 13-year-old, who now plays for USA National Select & Slam City head man Coach Francis. The current Terror Squad combo forward, is viewed as one of the top prospects regardless of class in the hoop world. After contributing heavily to Slam City’s championship run in the Tip Off Classic, Todd’s talent isn't visible only to scouts and coaches - anyone in the gym with a set of eyes can see his tools/skills are just silly.

Throughout the weekend the nations #1 team – made up of superstars in their own right; played Todd at all 5 positions; at one point the 6’7 stud even ran the point guard position. In Todd’s first visit ever to the Spotlight it only took us minutes to notice his fluidity running the floor, the guard-like handle, his passing, his shooting touch and mechanics -- and, oh yeah, a big man's size -- makes it no surprise that since hooking up with Coach Francis and the Slam City bunch Todd is quickly ascending up the national ranking board.

If prior performance is any indicator, the most elite middle school players in the world continue to suit up for Coach Francis and this weekend was no different as Todd and the Slam City group continued their winning ways defeating both the New York Gauchos and Team IZOD by the same 52-50 score.

Isaiah Todd has been a phenomenon on the circuit since suiting up for the Terror Squad - people are watching because few have seen anything like him — a 6-foot-7 player who can pass, shoot, block shots, run the floor and give defenders fits with ball-handling skills that at times make him look more point guard than post player. His broad shoulders and lengthy arms most certainly will be able to add weight and strength as the natural 7th grader matures.

Coach Francis has only worked with Todd for a couple of months, but he's already seen enough to throw his name into the mix with some of the greats at the middle level; his performance at the Tip Off Classic did nothing to change that!

"Isaiah is a transcendent player that has the potential to change the game” Francis stated “his package and skill set is a hybrid of many great players and yet he has no clue on how good he is or can be, that’s the scary part. I absolutely hate comparing kids to pro’s but to understand his potential he communicates defensively like a Kevin Garnett. He has the passing feel and ability of someone like Kevin Love. ... and he scores like a Tim Duncan, in creative ways and very fundamentally sound but craziest of all he’ll likely end up playing the wing"

The perk of playing in the Spotlight is that Todd will continue to be tested which will only serve to take his game to another level as he and the Terror look to be the first team to escape the Grand Finale undefeated.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Top Performers Part 3

Luis Reysono (Northeast Finest)

The Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Division produced so many fresh faces. Here’s our final look at the top performers in this age group.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Top Performers Part 3

Luis Reynoso Forward (Northeast Finest)- I can’t imagine it being a better 8th grade prospect in New Hampshire. Reynoso packs a unique combination of size, ability and basketball IQ. One of his best attributes is his ability to see the floor and pass the rock. He’s truly a natural about getting other teammates involved. He also can carry the scoring load, which he needs to attempt more often. When his frame fills out and all the facets of his game mature you could looking at someone very special. Remember where you heard it first.

Marty Silvera Guard (Northeast Finest)- Silvera is a cleaver point guard that can also switch to the scoring mode. He was able to beat defenders into the lane and finish after contact or drop off dimes. I like how he attacks off the bounce and controls the tempo.
Alex Stoddard Guard (Northeast Finest)- Stoddard’s job is to stretch the defense and he does it well. He has good form on his stroke. Even when he missed it looked good leaving his hands. He also seems to have a few more inches to go in terms of size which should just increase his stock.

Jorman Solano Forward (Hilltoppers Heat)- The big guy in the middle gave his best effort against the eventual champs Harlem Jets. He pounded them in the paint for 16 points. His presence and soft touch on the blocks was one of the reasons they made it to the final four.
Eric Dixon Forward (Philly Triple Threat)- Dixon put together a good weekend including a 16 point outing against the Harlem Jets and 24 markers against Bos Basketball. I like his size and improved footwork. This kid is very hungry and should be turning into a good prospect down the road.

Dyondre Dominquez Forward (Bos Basketball)- Speaking of Bos Basketball their forward Dyondre is still putting in the work with his new team. The lefty continues to extend his game to the perimeter. He drained 4 treys in their loss to Philly Triple Threat. The #1 prospect in Boston’s Class of 2019 continues to shine when he comes to the Spotlight.

Lucas Monroe Forward (Team Phenom)- Monroe finally made his Spotlight debut and showed some signs of being a real good prospect. For starters you can’t teach his size and the fact that he wants to push the rock means his game will translate to the next level. He’s very unselfish sometimes I think to a fault because he has the ability to score the ball more.

Chris Ings Guard (Team Phenom)- The explosive combo guard had his best outing versus Newark Pharoah when he tallied 17 points in their overtime loss. He continues to make strides after we saw him at the Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Cole Anthony (NY Rens)

The Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Division produced a first time champion. It also gave us a chance to take a look at some new faces on the basketball scene. Here’s Part 2 of our top performers from the weekend.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Cole Anthony Guard (NY Rens)- Anthony AKA “The Natural” is probably the best pure scorer in America. This weekend he showed unlimited range from deep, mid-range prowess, strong finishes at the rim including a signature finger roll and even threw down a dunk in transition. Cole attacks the basket with a purpose which usually end with a bucket or a trip to the charity stripe. He’s one of the few players in the country that’s a threat to score when he touches the rock anywhere on the floor.

Joe Toussaint Guard (NY Rens)- The Spotlight thrives because it gives a stage for players like Toussaint to make a splash. The hard penetrating guard had everyone asking who’s #4 on the Rens. He had finishing ability at the tin and a mean pull from the mid-range area. He has good size which makes him dangerous when he’s charging defenders especially in transition. He looked very good with this unit.

Phillip Joseph Forward (NY Rens)- I see Joseph has been working on expanding his game. He still has some post up skills but now he’s willing to face up more before operating. He has a quick first step and the quickness to take advantage of many post defenders. If he keeps working he could become a legit wing in a few years.
Judah McIntyre Guard (NY Rens)- McIntyre has grown a couple of inches since last summer and came off the bench to spark his squad. His court vision remains one of the best in the region as he’s capable of hitting teammates from any angle. He seems more comfortable with his outside shot and needs to use it more to keep the defense honest.
Papie Roberts Guard (Newark Pharoah)- Roberts runs the show for the Newark squad and he’s built like a tank. He’s strong and plays with a low center of gravity so it’s extremely difficult for him to be stripped. His tough as nails style and ball handling ability allowed him to get anywhere on the floor. He went on a scoring binge against Team Phenom and finished with 33 points which helped them advance to the quarterfinals.

Taj Anderson Guard (Team Twelve)- Anderson would have made his uncle Kenny proud the way he played against Northeast Finest. The combo guard showed the ability to score in the open floor and create plays for his teammates. I also like his touch from the outside. He finished with 16 points in the contest.
Tyrik Mitchell Guard (Team Twelve)- Nicknamed Boogie, this guard teams with Anderson to be a good looking backcourt. He has good dribbling skills and can set up teammates. But if needed Mitchell can also catch fire and get it done in the scoring column.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic Feature: Dorsey Helps Deliver Championship To Riverside!

Jeremiah Dorsey Riverside Hawks

The National Champions brought their names and their games to the Spotlight Tip Off Classic – they wrote the check and cashed it winning the 2023 4th grade age group in impressive controlling the game from start to finish in defeating Havoc City.

Leading the way for the Riverside Hawks was nationally ranked shooting guard Jeremiah Dorsey (#9) who showed up big all weekend long. Dorsey was arguably the most talented young guard in age group due to his lethal combination of shooting, penetration, and passing. Jeremiah is a tremendously gifted shooter but has the ability to convert buckets at all three levels.

The Hawks played an up-tempo pressing style which caused problems and turnovers for opponents all weekend long – Jeremiahs burst in transition was dynamic and he showed he can finish with either hand. He knocked in several shots simply by allowing his defensive to dictate and transition into his offence; a very mature and well coached aspect of his game.

The Riverside Hawks 2023 is going to be tough to beat all season long – the first order of business when doing so is to make sure that Jeremiah Dorsey is held in check!

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Elijah Wenn (Harlem Jets)

The Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Division produced a first time champion. It also gave us a chance to take a look at some new faces on the basketball scene. Here’s Part 1 of our top performers from the weekend.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Elijah Wenn Guard (Harlem Jets)- Wenn was the team’s catalyst all weekend especially in the backcourt. He used his thick frame to break through the defense and finish after contact. On the defensive end he bullied ball handlers and caused several turnovers. He has the poise and passion to help his team take home the title.

Adeleye OyeKanimi Forward (Harlem Jets) Adeleye went crazy in the finals. The athletic forward his strong finishing around the basket but even stepped out and showed us some of his three point prowess. He’s a true energy player on defense; grabbing boards and blocking shots.

Glenn Anderson Guard (Harlem Jets)- Anderson came to life in the finals. He was a demon in the transition game. Pushing the rock up the floor and making good decisions with the pill. On defense he’s another quick, pesky guard harassing ball handlers. He teamed well with Wenn in the backcourt.

Amadau Traore Forward (Harlem Jets)- The big forward is still developing on the offensive end but on defense he remains and problem with his rebounding and shot blocking ability. His presence allowed the HJ guards to gamble in the passing lanes and trap a little more.

Khalif Battle Guard (New Heights)- Battle showed a lot of promise weekend. His smooth stroke from the perimeter looks pretty especially when it’s dropping. I also was impressed with his ball handling and play making ability in the open floor. He’s capable of breaking down most defenders and sees the floor very well. Yes, another Battle is o the horizon.

Ryan Myers Guard (New Heights)- Myers was serviceable this weekend. He’s strong with the ball and can score when needed in that area. I see him trying to make the transition to the traditional point guard position which can be difficult but attainable with hard work.

Precious Achiuwa Forward (New Heights): Now this kid is an interesting prospect. Very long, wiry and athletic. I like how he finishes off plays and runs the floor like a gazelle. While some might want him to be a post-up guy, this kid seems to yearn to play with the ball in his hands. His coach will have to learn to deal with that ups and down of that experiment.

Alexander Rice Guard (New Heights)- I think with a little work and confidence Rice could be the point guard New Heights needs. For beginners it’s in his genes (Son Of King Rice) and he as a natural smoothness with the ball. All he needs now is to understand and know that it’s his team to run.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: From Utah To The Spotlight!

Evan Young Traveled From Utah

Evan Young is a player that simply loves to compete; you can’t help but fall in love with his passion to play the game and to compete on the highest level. An unassuming kid off the court he has plays with a high intensity motor and with a quite it confidence when stepping onto the floor. Earlier this month his without him, his Unlimited Glory squad competed against the Riverside Hawks losing by 44 points – with his arrival Glory suffered a tough 4-point defeat in the first round pool game and had a chance to win down the stretch. A 40-point turn around that Young was a major contributor to – after the emotional loss they came out flat in the next game versus the Mavericks suffering a very surprising 1-pont defeat.

Evan finished the event on a high note taking home a victory in the 3rd game - On the court, he's a fearless shot taker and big time shot maker who wants to get to press the paint and will take a licking and keep on ticking. When fouled he is a high percentage shooter who will knock it down from the line with great efficiency.

The #14 player in the class in the country made his first appearance here at the Spotlight and he didn’t disappoint; he proved he had the goods, talent, and skill set to compete against the best in the country – he’s not just a gamer he’s a game changer.

Diary Of A Baller: Judah McIntyre (New York, NY) Entry #1

Judah McIntyre Wins Prestigious Award

Hello World, For starters, I feel honored that I am able to be a part of the "Diary of a Baller" series, knowing the history of players that came before me. Secondly, I am very excited to give you an insight into my life, on and off the court.

Well, I am Judah McIntyre, point guard for New Renaissance Basketball Association (RENS). Contrary to popular belief that I am 16 or 17 still in the 8th grade, I recently celebrated my 15th birthday three weeks ago. I attend Dwight-Englewood on an academic scholarship which I am very proud of. I was recently awarded the prestigious Masters Award from Dwight-Englewood. This award is usually give to a student who exemplifies excellence both in academics and sports. In addition, I am the first student to receive this award at the end of my 7th grade year in over thirty years at the school.

This week was a pretty good week, despite the fact that my team lost to New Heights in the semi-finals of the Tip-Off Classic. I am still disappointed in my play throughout this weekend. This just simply means that I have to get back in the gym and work even harder to try and get better.

Monday-Wednesday, were pretty light days for me basketball wise. Was only able to do my daily push-ups and sit-ups, because I had a lot of homework and studying to do. My main focus of study was on Spanish test that was on Wednesday - which I later got an A minus on. Wednesday night, I went to Christ the King for Rens practice and I saw one of my really good friends Tyrek Chambers. I was happy to see him because I haven't seen him in a while and we sort of caught up on a lot of things before my practice. Also, watch out for this kid, he just received offers from a couple of D1 schools. Watchout! Anyway, that night we had a good practice and worked on a couple things as a team to get ready for this weekend but we also did some drills individually, which I thought were great.

Thursday morning, I woke up around 5:30 A.M. for a workout with my dad before school started. For the first half of the workout I mainly worked on my conditioning and strengthening my legs. After, I did some drills, working on my 3pt shooting and my pull-up jump shot. Once I was done, I was off to school. Since, I didn't have any regular classes on Friday's, I didn't really do much homework or studying. I enjoyed one of my hobbies, which is playing fantasy basketball with my dad. It's really fun and I really enjoy doing it with my dad because I feel it's a great bonding time. Also, I am able to analyze players in the NBA and really learn the game while trying to find players that I would like to pattern my game after.

Friday was a great day, mainly because I raised my Spanish Grade to a B+ which was at a C earlier in the year. I went to youth Church that night in the Bronx. Going to Church, I think is really important because without God nothing is possible and he's the reason why I've grown to become who I am today.

I was super excited for this weekend, playing in the first Basketball Spotlight tournament of the year. Our first game, I didn't play too well mainly because I felt I wasn't aggressive enough, but we still won. Our second game I felt I played much better, definitely more aggressive, shout out to my brother Cole, for catching his first dunk in the game. Later that day I was super excited to go to Sneaker Con. I love collecting, selling, trading, and buying sneakers. It is one of my favorite things to do. I also enjoy it because everything I buy or sell is with MY money that I've made. I bought two pairs of sneakers that I've wanted for a while. After, I hung out with a couple of my friends. I was able to get some rest for the games in the morning.

That morning we faced North-East Finest and we beat them convincingly. I felt I had a pretty good game and I felt I was really leading my team. Sadly we took the L to New Heights, which I promise you won't happen again. I had a good game and I caught fire from 3 point range -which is something I've been working on for a while so I was proud of myself for that. In all, it was a great weekend and this is just the beginning of a long basketball journey and it's something my team will have to learn from.

This is Judah McIntyre, signing off, and remember use basketball don't let it use you. See ya next week! Follow my life @j_macvip!

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Preview

Can Philly Triple Threat Get It Done?

The Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Division is locked and loaded. Here’s a breakdown of some the top talent coming to Neptune, NJ.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 8th Grade Preview

Philly Triple Threat: PTT enters the Spotlight Tip Off after an impressive run at the AGame Super Shootout. They have a loaded roster featuring Donta Scott, Eric Dixon, Zachery Lezanic, Justin Galea and Shirmeek Lofton. They are looking like one of the top teams in the region and will have a chance to prove it.

NY Rens: The Bad Boys from NY are back. They had an impressive run last season and now are back for some more meat. They have a mean trio of Cole Anthony, Phillip Joseph, Joe Toussaint and Judah McIntyre. This talent combined with their toughness makes a real chance for a championship run. They bring serious energy when they step on the floor.

New Heights: NH came to make a new for themselves. Their trio of Ryan Meyers, Khalif Battle and Alexander Rice are something to deal with. Battle is shaping up to a top notch guard and heading into similar waters of his older brother Tyus.

Bos Basketball: These boys left the Expressions program and grabbed most of the grammar school talent. They have super forward Dyondre Dominquez, Khristian Connor, Dajon Pendleton-Mills and Matt Cross. This would be a perfect opportunity for them to make the region respect their new program.

Team Phenom: Paul Gripper has been anxiously waiting for a chance to unveil his squad into the Spotlight and here’s his chance. I’m hearing Lucas Monroe is the next big thing out of Philly and I already saw tough guards Allen Powell and Chris Ings at the Future Phenom Camp.

Team Twelve: The Brooklyn boys are back and they mean business. This year’s edition consists of Tyrik Boogie Mitchell, Erlyn Ramirez and Taj Anderson (Nephew of Kenny Anderson). The animated Coach Seabrook will have his troops ready to do battle. Please believe it.

Harlem Jets: The Jets make their Spotlight debut and should be in for a good test. We look forward to seeing their trio of Elijah Wynn , Adeleye Oyekanmi & Glen Anderson. Word out of NY if that they are capable of knocking anyone off. We shall see this weekend.

Brooklyn Rens: The Brooklyn version of the Rens bring it to the ring like a club fighter. Coach Smoke is ready to unleash his duo of Neo Irving and Marcus Patterson. They are now out to prove that they are among the elite teams in the region.

Hilltoppers Heat: HH will be trying to protect their home turf in Jersey. They have 3 players that are ready to take the next step in Al Dawes, Eligah Sparkman and rising big man Jorman Solano. They have their work cut out for them but I think they are capable of getting it done.

Also Look Out For: St. Michaels, Newark Pharoahs, Northeast Finest, Playtime, MABC, NJ Connection, NJ Warriors, Severn Elite, Harlem United and Turbo/CTA

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 7th Grade Preview

Can Anyone Stop The "Terror Squad"

The 7th Grade Division of the Tip Off Classic is by far the most talented and stacked. This bracket will surely let us know who the top team in the region is.

Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic 7th Grade Preview

Slam City Elite: Yes, the Terror Squad will be in the building and will be making their march towards history. No team has ever traveled the Basketball Spotlight circuit undefeated but they could be the first. They possess the most powerful line up in the country with all 5 starters in our national top 20 (Isaiah Todd, Jordan Toles, Tyler Brelsford, AJ Hoggard, and Cameron Byers). They would have to be the overwhelming favorite.

PSA Cardinals: This scrappy bunch feature a strong quartet of players (Andre Washington, Tysheem Pickett, Brandon Weston and Jaylen Murray). They have battled with the Terror Squad on a few occasions and are ready for another shot. They have a very good chance of winning it all.

Gauchos: The Choz finished #5 in America and have grown accustomed to wining with this group. Point guard RJ Davis is currently ranked #21 on our national list and can change a game single handily. You also have to throw in DJ Bailey and CJ Robinson. If these boys get hot they could take the championship back to the Bronx. RJ, DJ and CJ AKA the "Alphabet Boys".

Team IZOD: Smooth scoring guard Shane Dezonie returns is now joined by newcomers Austin Allison and Demon Clowney. Point guard Richie Greaves will be running the show for Reggie Carter’s crew. They are positioning themselves to make a strong run for the championship.

Havoc City Elite: The DMV squad is coming in featuring Dimigus Stevens and Marcus Dockery AKA The Splash Brothers. These are two of the top shooters in the country and you can also throw in one of the most versatile forwards Jahmal Banks.

Team Final: Xavier Pina has moved over to Team Final and that gives them a legitimate scorer from the perimeter. He isn’t afraid to launch it from the cheap seats. Hopefully they have some other pieces that can help them get over the top.

Philly Triple Threat: PTT comes in with a solid group led by Brandon Campbell, Nair Pettigrew, Manir Waller and Marvin Harrison. This is our first time checking them out and we are very curious.

Boston Titans: The Boys from Bean Town made some noise on our circuit last year. Now they return with the dynamic backcourt of Kurtis Henderson and Jamel Shaheed. They have never been the type to back down and we don’t expect them to start now.

NY Rens: Rens Director/Coach and middle school guru Billy Council is back with a fresh batch. Right now his go to guy is Jaheim Young but knowing Council he has others in his arsenal that he is keeping quiet about. The Rens always bring something new.

Hilltoppers Heat: HH look to make some noise with the trio of Matthew Tracy, Noah Mack and Jaden Caban. This program as a whole is on the rise and a deep run by this group could only help them along the way. Also Look Out For: Brooklyn Rens, Wiz Kids, Gym Rats, Milbank and New Heights
