Hello Basketball Spotlight Fam! The past few weeks have had its highs and lows on the court. Our season has started and we are learning each other and what is best for our team. We played in the Charlotte Hoops Classic and took an “L” (loss) against Providence Day. That was probably the best thing that has happened to our team this far. That loss caused us to make adjustments. We had gotten the big head because of our rankings and all of the attention. Since that loss, everyone is working harder individually and as a team. On a positive note, I got the following write-up from that tournament… 

 “2020 5’10” PG Jalen Cone – Seriously doubt there’s a better player in the 8th grade class than Cone. His ability to guard the ball 94 feet was fun to watch. Our next game was against Christ School. We played at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Fleming Gymnasium and still had a packed gym. Our team played like dogs. We went after everything. We were aggressive, and wanted it more than the other team. We are still learning in areas where we need to get better. We ended up winning by twenty-two points. It was a great feeling after the game in the locker room. Individually, I played better. My confidence level is growing rapidly. 

Playing out here with these older guys, I am realizing that things that I never thought that I was good at, I am now seeing that I am very good. For example, my defense has been phenomenal in each game that I have played so far according to scouts and spectators. I am playing these high school guards baseline to baseline which is tough with some of the shifty, fast and strong guards that we play. Areas to improve upon in my game are being aggressive and getting into the lane so that I can get my teammates open shots.

The Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic will he filled with achieving point guards but none might not be better than AJ Hoggard. Hoggard will be taking the floor with Team Final and trying to help the Nike squad bring home the title. He showed tremendous strides over the summer while being featured in the Top 20 of our rankings.

Hilltoppers Heat Joins Adidas Family!

The Hilltoppers Heat have been developing their basketball program the last few years and their hard work has paid of dividends. The Garden State boys have signed a sponsorship deal with Adidas. This a major move for the Heat and program President Mark Scott feels the same. “We are excited to represent Adidas. We look forward to participating on the Adidas circuit and all major events” he finished.

The Cone Family 

The most important thing to me, next to God, is my FAMILY!!! I have been blessed in my short fourteen years of life with a wonderful family. My parents are Harold and Alicia Cone. They have been married for twenty-one years and counting! My dad is from North Babylon, New York and came to North Carolina for college. He played basketball at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). My dad is a trainer at Fitness One Training Systems and he trains athletes from five years-old to professional players who play oversees. He and my mom were friends at church, but did not start dating until they were at UNCG together. My mother is an English Language Arts teacher – can’t you tell because she edits all of my articles. She is also my number one cheerleader! I thank my dad for training me all of my life and for inspiring me to work hard. I thank my mom for nurturing me and making me work hard academically.

I have three siblings, Drew, Madison and Joy. Drew is my oldest brother and he is a college student who plays point guard at Sandhills Community College. He inspires me and he pushes me to excel in basketball and to walk close with Jesus in my everyday life. My second oldest brother, Madison, is a beast on the football field. He is a defensive back who plays corner. He has eight college offers and counting. He is also a dynamic basketball player. Finally, my beautiful little sister is my Joy Joy! She is my ace even though we fuss. She is a gifted singer and a pretty good athlete on the basketball court. 

 In closing, I cannot talk about family without mentioning my rock, my Grandma, Pastor Geralene T. Patterson. She spoils me and she prays for me daily! My grandpa, Madison W. Cone is also a great supporter of my family. My late grandpa, Aaron Patterson, Sr., and my late grandma, Alice T. Cone, are my guardian angels watching me from heaven and cheering me on as I journey through life. I am appreciative to all of my family, friends, church family and god-parents, Chris and Kristi, for all of your love and support. …

Breakdown: I should have known this guard was from Philly because his game speaks toughness. Taj is built like a bowling ball and drives through the defense like a running back. On defense he was a ball hawk and bullied defenders into turnovers. He plays both ends of the floor in a very fast pace. It seems to be a free agent on the AAU scene but that should change soon.
