Basketball Spotlight 13U Midseason Report

We are currently at the mid-point of the Basketball Spotlight season and a lot of interesting things have transpired. Some new players and teams have emerged. Here’s our mid season 13U report.

Basketball Spotlight 13U Midseason Report

Hottest Team: F.A.C.E.S.

They won the Clash For The Cup, finished in the final four of the AC Showcase and recently won the NJ State crown. Coach Cole turned this group around quickly and they might take home that Grand Champion trophy at the end of July.

Surprise Team: Force One

Winning the Blue Division at the Grand Finale was one thing but the way they ran through some of the top teams in AC impressed us. They are definitely clicking on all cylinders right now.

MIA Team: DC Assault

We haven’t seen the #1 team in the region since Grand Finale but don’t worry they will be entering the MDC. They are currently gearing up for their regional championship. This is a very dangerous team in the 13U level.

Player Of The Year Front Runner Alani Moore (DC Assault)
“Showtime” just impacts the game tremendously on this level. This weekend I saw Moore bang out with some of the toughest 8th grade guards in the region. He’s one of those guys that just knows how win and does anything to get it done.

Surprise Player: Joe Hampton (Force One)
I knew this kid could dominate but he’s playing like the best forward in the region right now. He was a match up nightmare for everyone he faced in Atlantic City. He has definitely thrown his name in the POY talk.

Current POY Candidate List’
Alani Moore (DC Assault)
Anthony Cowan (DC Assault)
Sam Green (DC Assault)
Joe Hampton (Force One)
Mustafa Heron (Gauchos)
NyRhique Smith (Gauchos)
Ray Montilous (F.A.C.E.S.)
Jamir Harris (Team Final)
Unique McLean (Team Scan)
Ceasar Adim (MABC)
Jamal Allen (MABC)
Tremont Waters (CT Elite)

Diary Of A Baller: Otis "The General" Livingston (NJ Got Game) Entry #21

What’s happening?

We started off our AAU season with two tournaments this past weekend. We entered the 15u States (division I) and the Playaz Spring Fling (14u). During the week we practiced hard. We ran plays so we will not forget anything in the games. We ran set plays, and out of bounds plays. We also worked on shell defense and talking on defense. We worked on the press break and the different options off of the press break. Being prepared is more than half the battle.

Our first game was on Thursday. We played the NJ Panthers in the Spring Fling. We started out slow, but then our offense got going and we ended up winning by about 12. Defensively we gave up too many layups and didn’t get enough rebounds. Friday we played NJ Blaze in Neptune for the 15u states. Once again we got in a hole and we had to dig ourselves out. They are a tough team that you can’t take lightly because they’re fundamentally sound and they can shoot the rock. I didn’t think I shot the ball very well personally, but none of us were making shots and we ended up losing by 2.

Our next State game was early Saturday morning against the Roadrunners. We started out pretty even because our plays worked and we got baskets. They are a very aggressive defensive team so we ran some back door plays and they worked. We were down 3 with about 6 minutes left in the game and we let it get away from us. We got beat on the press a couple of times and they scored easy layups. They got easy rebounds and put backs and we turned the ball over and missed a few layups and ended up losing by 12 to them. Overall we played a really good game though. We were outsized and we played hard. I really wanted that one. We didn’t have long to think about that loss because we were on to the next game at 1:00 in the Spring Fling.

We played the Playaz 13u and we came in and did what we were supposed to do. We got rebounds and lots of fast break baskets. We also got 2nd chance rebounds and baskets. We ended up winning by a lot, which gave everyone rest because the quarterfinal against the Philly Aztecs was later that day.

To start the Philly Aztecs game we were ready and pumped. We got buckets off of cutting to the basket against the zone. They played a 1-3-1 and a 2-3. We worked against those defenses a lot in practice and it felt good to see our plays work. At half time they were up 4. We knew we had to finish our layups and get rebounds because they were out rebounding us. In the 3rd we made a run and we were up 7. We lost some focus and they made a run. Coach Pete always says that basketball is a game of runs. In the 4th they were up 2 with 30 seconds and Jadon hit a clutch floater to tie it. With 1.6 seconds left we committed a foul and they hit one free throw and won the game. That one will hurt because we were up and we let it get away from us.

On Sunday to end the weekend we played St. Michaels, our last State game. We were up early 8-2, but then they went from playing man to a zone and we were down 14-8. They were just out toughing us and getting the rebounds. We were making stupid mistakes and they were capitalizing on them. At half time we were down 6. Coach Pete told us that if we didn’t turn it up then there wouldn’t be a single ball at practice and we would just run sprints. That woke us up and we came out hard. We got more rebounds and started pushing the ball more. It was late in the game and we were down 1. Jadon came through again and hit a floater to go up 1. History repeated itself because we fouled with 10 seconds to go and they hit two free throws and they were up one. We ran a play but it didn’t work out and we lost by 1. We were really disappointed with ourselves and Coach Pete was disappointed too. We lost three of our games by 4 pts. total. We talked a lot about making one play, one more rebound, one more layup, one more steal, one less turnover, or coming up with one more loose ball. At practice all we’re going to do is run and do boxing out drills.

But we will be back, this is only the beginning.

The General is OUT!

PV AAU Regional Championships Recap: Top Performers Class 2017

Aaron Thompson (Team Takeover)

The Potomac Valley AAU District Championship was in full swing and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. On the second day we got a chance to check out some of the top 6th Graders from this region. Here are the top 6th Graders that impressed us.

Top Performers Class 2017

Aaron Thompson Guard (Team Takeover)- The lefty is a point guard with big time potential. Thompson is the type of player that sees the play develop before actually making things happen. He has superb court vision and leadership qualities. He seems to be one of the next great guards to come from this area. He has earned an invite to the Super Showcase.

Cameron Norman Guard (6th Man Warriors)- Speaking of leadership, look no further than Norman. He gave us a glimpse of his skills in AC but he turned it up on his home turf. He delivers the rock to teammates like UPS and loves playing in a big time atmosphere.

Donovan Toatley Guard (Maryland Panthers)- The 5th Grader did more than hold his own playing up. His ball handling is beyond his years and his outside range is incredible for a kid his size. Defenders need to make sure they have their ankles taped before guarding this youngster.

Prentiss Hubb Guard (DC Assault)- Hubb had that outside shot falling from deep. He has a smooth laid back demeanor but his game speaks a high volume of confidence. He will be a fixture in the DC Assault family for years. Expect to see him at the Super Showcase.

James Valley Forward (6th Man Warriors)- Valley does all the dirty work for this squad including banging the boards and blocking shots. He has good length and very good athleticism for this level.

Glenn Ford Forward (DC Assault)- Ford was a great pickup for DC Assault. He’s still developing but does enough right now to greatly affect the game. Once the lanky forward gets it all together opponents need to watch out. He could be a name to remember.

Cameron Spence Forward (Team Takeover)- The young space eater plays light on his feet with a soft touch around the tin. He has decent post moves and knows how to use his wide frame to slow down shot blockers.

Quinten Drayton Guard (Team Takeover)- Drayton has a scary upside to his game. He runs the floor like a gazelle and changes direction on a dime. I like his ball handling when attacking from the wing and I also believe he will be playing above the rim in the near future.

NJ AAU 13U Championship Recap: F.A.C.E.S. Captures Gold

"Killer Bees" Got Their Honey

F.A.C.E.S. rallied from a 18 point halftime deficit to defeat King Street Kings 71-63 to capture the New Jersey 13U AAU Championship. The “Killer Bees” got balanced scoring including Ray Montilous (25), Jaga Mosley (14), Idris Joyner (12) and Christian Ford (10) markers. Congrats to Rob Cole, staff and players for winning the gold.

PV AAU Regionals Championships Recap: Top Baby Ballers

Tyler Brelsford (DC Assault)

The Potomac Valley AAU District Championship is in full swing and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. On the second day we got a chance to check out a heated contest with DC Assault and Team Takeover 10U squads. Here’s a look at the Baby Ballers that impressed us.

Top Performers (Baby Ballers)

Tyler Brelsford Guard (DC Assault)- This youngster is definitely the quarterback for this team. He pushes the rock with his head raised while surveying the floor for teammates. But when his team needs some points he’s also capable of putting the ball in the hole. The reigning Mr. Memorial Day finished with 13 points, 7 boards and 4 dimes.

Mike Sumner Guard (DC Assault)- Brelsford’s backcourt mate handles most of the scoring duty. He as a nice outside stroke but what really caught my eye was the fact that he cuffs the rock when charging the lane. The fact that he understands to cradle the pill shows me that he’s an advanced 4th grader. He finished with a game high 14 points.

Jay Heath Forward (DC Assault)- Heath is a versatile youngster. He plays with a lot of energy when hitting the glass and running the floor. He’s a good finisher and uses his quickness to play defense.

Jabari Davis Guard (DC Assault)- The point guard gave this squad some energy off the bench. He played intense full court defense and forced a few turnovers. Offensively, he handles the pill with some quickness and flair.

Jaamir Butler Forward (Team Takeover)- Butler had a good game against Assault. He hit a few jumpers including a 3 pointer. I also like the way he hit the boards and scored on put backs. He really brought his game.

Jahmir Young Guard (Team Takeover)- You have to love this kid’s game. The southpaw is a showman in the open floor and dazzled the crowd with some of his moves. When TT raced out to an early lead it was Young igniting the engine.

Diary Of A Baller: Isaiah "Boogie" Briscoe (Union, NJ) Entry #1

Hello basketball world, my name is Isaiah “Boogie” Briscoe, age 14. I received my nickname from my 14u coach Jaden for my handle. My dad name is George and my mom name is Henrietta. I have 3 siblings; Iasia who is 21, George Jr. 20, and Iesha 16. I was born in Newark, New Jersey, and then moved to Union where I currently reside. I’m in the 8th grade at Good Shephard Academy in Irvington where I have a B+ average.

As far as athletics, what else can I say it’s in my blood. My grandfather and father are legends in the greater Newark area. My oldest sister Iasia was a girl’s basketball H.S. All-American at MX Shabazz H.S. in Newark but, SHE IS NOT BETTER THEN ME LOL. She now attends Syracuse University on a basketball scholarship. My brother George played at Long Branch High School. My other sister Iesha participates in Track and Field at Union High School; she holds the county record in shot put. Not too many people know but football has long been my favorite sport, but that all changed two years ago.

In the months to come I will be sharing my world with bballspotlight followers, so stay tuned.

Special shout outs to Kiy Hester, and Playaz Fam

PV AAU Regionals Championships Recap: Top Performers Part 2

Reggie Corbin (Maryland Finest)

The Potomac Valley AAU District Championship is in full swing and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. We got a chance to check a lot of the 14U action and here’s our second report.

14U Top Performers Part 2

Reggie Corbin Guard (Maryland Finest)- Corbin was a pleasant sight today. He got the best of the younger DC Assault guards. He plays both ends of the floor like a true warrior. The muscular guard not only used his power to get by defenders but also a swift crossover and low dribble. In terms of scoring he finishes at the rim and has a mean pull up in the lane. Defensively, he was able to move his feet well and pluck a few steals. In the closing moments of the tight game the vocal leader carried his team to the victory. In terms of improvement I think he needs to show he can go strong left a little more to keep the defense honest.

Tony Blackwell Guard (Maryland Finest)- Blackwell’s game has totally transformed since I first saw him two years ago in this very gym. The once post player not only has moved to the perimeter but even ran the point when Corbin needed a breather. His stroke has improved and he’s comfortable launching shots from deep. He also plays the game under control and makes better basketball decisions.

Boogie Watson Guard (DC Assault)- Watson roamed the baseline and scored after receiving feeds from their talented guards. Boogie caught fire just when things seemed very bleak for the 13U squad. His ability to finish helped his team get back into the game. He attacked well from the foul line area.

Alani Moore Guard (DC Assault)- Moore anticipation on the defensive end is one of his best assets. He tries to beat ball handlers to the spot and plays the passing lanes well. Offensively, he was able to make some plays but did have a tough time finishing against this older physical bunch (Maryland Finest). But in the end he still had his squad right there with a chance to win it.

Anthony Cowan Guard (DC Assault)- Mister Cowan was very impressive in their first outing. He was very active on defense and scored in a variety of ways. He did a good job operating from the point guard position while directing traffic.

Reggie Gardner Guard (DC Assault)- We all know Gardner can shoot but I want to talk about his improved motor and defensive effort. Since Assault uses a four guard set Reggie helped out inside including altering shots and grabbing rebounds.

Tomorrow we will bring you coverage of the 10U and 12U top performers.

PV AAU Regional Championships Recap: Top Performers Part 1

Marcus Atkinson (Fairfax Stars)

The Potomac Valley AAU District Championship is in full swing and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. We got a chance to check a lot of the 14U action and here’s our first report.

14U Top Performers

Marcus Atkinson Guard (Fairfax Stars)- After watching him attack today I’m confident to say that this kid has some special tools. The way he maneuvers with the rock and his ability to score from all three levels stood out. The scary aspect for opponents is that he’s only going to get better.

Carlos Thrash Guard (Fairfax Stars)- Thrash spearheaded the Stars full court pressure. He made the opposing point work and forced a few turnovers. In the 4th quarter he leaked out on the break for some easy buckets that put the game away.

Tyvez Monroe Forward (Fairfax Stars)- Monroe had the floater dropping in the lane and showed some improved ball handling. He did get into a little trouble late in the game by over dribbling and getting caught in the air. For them to win it all he has to return inside a little more.

Mike White Guard (Emery Elite)- The pint size floor general gave Fairfax everything they could handle. He dribbled through their pressure a few times and drilled some big shots when the game was still in question. This little guy has big heart.

Charles Meiklejohn Forward (Emery Elite)- Charles was the other reason Emery stayed close for much of this game. He battled hard inside and has some touch in the mid range area. His focus right now should be extending is range and developing his ball handling.

Reggie Parker Guard (Future Players)- Parker is just a rock steady strong point guard. In his contest against Fairfax Maroon he thrived in transition while also showing good court vision and the ability to score. He drained a trey in the 4th quarter that was the nail in the coffin for the opposition.

Jamal David Guard (Future Players)- David has a confident stroke from behind the arc. Today he found the sweet spot from the corners. He must improve his upper body strength so he can finish off plays in the lane on the high school level.

Basketball Spotlight 12U Midseason Report

Hottest Team: Team IZOD

The MIT and AC Showcase crowns have separated them from the rest of the pack. A Summer Slam Appearance seems certain as well as another date with rival CBC. This time it could be for all the marbles.

Surprise Team: Playtime Panthers

They won the AGame crown and that should be good preparation for the NJ State tournament. This team has some good pieces and is capable of knocking anyone off. We will be keeping an eye on this bunch.

MIA Team: Rising Stars

After the controversy at the MIT this squad seems to have vanished. They have some serious talent and hopefully we will see them back in the mix again. They made things very interesting.

Player Of The Year Front Runner
Nate Pierre Louis (Team IZOD)

After his performance at the AC Showcase he moved closer to clinching another POY trophy. His championship game performance will go down as one of the best clutch performances at Basketball Spotlight. Jaecee Martin also is a name that has to be mentioned for POY.

Surprise Player: Prentiss Hubb (DC Assault)

His play at the Clash For The Cup and AC Showcase has made him a POY candidate. DC Assault should be in good hands the rest of the season with this southpaw driving the ship.

Basketball Spotlight 11U Midseason Report

Hottest Team: We Run

They went from a surprised team to the hottest 11U name in the region. Their MIT and AGame crowns stand out and we do expect them to pick up a Spotlight banner before the season is done.

Surprise Team: T Town Ballers

This group has turned things around quickly. They won the Super Regional in Virginia and made it to the final four of the AC Showcase. Now let’s see how they react when teams are gunning from them.

MIA Team: NYC Gauchos

We have an APB out on the Choz. They started the season on fire and we expected them to run the table. We will be definitely looking for this group on the circuit. They have some serious talent.

Player Of The Year Front Runner Jalen Brooks (We Run)

This kid jump starts the engine for this group. He can explode for buckets or run the show like a true floor general. His steady play has this squad in position to win it all.

Surprise Player: Kiyon Johnson (Delaware Royalty)

Delaware Royalty is back and you can blame Johnson for that. The big guard has the ability to take over a game at anytime. He also loves dishing the rock to teammates and hitting the glass. He has an all around game.
