AC Showcase 13U Preview: Go Hard Or Go Home

Can Team Final Continue Their Atlantic City Reign?

The 13U Division in the AC Showcase should produce some interesting matchups. Both divisions have some top notch teams that are eager for some shine and raising the banner. Here’s a breakdown of the top 7th Grade teams making the trip.

AC Showcase 13U Preview

Team Final: TF will make their Spotlight debut after winning the AGame Super Shootout. They must have a great showing in AC and at the MDC to get an invite to Summer Slam. This bunch always seems to step up when needed.

F.A.C.E.S.: The Killer Bees responded well with a championship at the Clash For The Cup. They added some size and their guard play continues to show improvement. If they raise the banner in AC it was probably guarantee them a spot in Summer Slam.

Team Felton: The North Carolina squad will be making their first trip to the Spotlight. They have two of the best 7th Graders in America in Harry Giles and Mike Buckland. I’m anxious to see how they perform under the bright lights.

CC 1st (Orange)- Raekwon “Grande” Long has moved over to CC 1st so this squad should be ready to go. The 6’9 youngster is still developing but you can’t teach this size. I want to see how they handle the tough competition in the north.

Force One: FO feels they are ready for the big boys and now they have their wish. Big Joe Hampton has been doing damage thus far and with the addition of guard Chris Lykes this crew should be good to go.


MABC: “Hail” Ceasar is searching for his first Spotlight crown. The Bengals have come close including a Final Four run at the MDC. Jamal “Left Handed Bandit” Allen will be burning the nets in AC.

CT Elite: These boys made a Final Four run at the Clash For The Cup. Tremont Waters can score from anywhere which makes him a dangerous guard and they also have a few more pieces. Don’t count them out.


Team Rebels: Vaughn Covington will be looking to lead this group into battle. It will be interesting to see their pool matchup against Team Final. That should be a highly contested game.


Team Scan: TS should be ready to make a run at the Blue Division crown. They have some serious talent and should make it to the final round on Sunday. Unique McLean is a special talent.


Philly Triple Threat: PTT is as tough as they come. Joshua Sharkey is one of the best guards around and never stops attacking. Their tough style will be needed for them to win the crown.


Albany Dream Team: Dyaire Holt is a serious guard that can score at will. He led ADT to the Clash For The Cup crown. The attention will be on this group once they reach America’s Playground.


Philly Peacemakers: This rugged squad will be making the trip to AC with championship aspirations. Quadir Phillips is a forward with loads of potential and Semaj Motley is a quality floor general that can also score.

Delaware Finest Stars: The Div. 2 National Champs are in the building. They play a physical style on both ends both ends of the floor and have a great guard in Antwon Peace. I look forward to watching them rock.

Cen. Penn Ballers: These boys made it to the finals of the Clash For The Cup. Kobe Gantz and Montrell Morgan form an excellent backcourt. Don’t sleep on this group.

AC Showcase 12U Preview: Race For #1 Is On!

Will CBC Leave AC As Our New #1 12U Team?

The 12U Division of the AC Showcase is loaded with talent. The #1 spot in this age group seems to be wide open and some of these squads are capable of moving in. Let’s take a look at who will be traveling down to America’s Playground.

AC Showcase 12U Preview

CBC: CBC is currently the #1 contender for the crown. They are ranked #2 and a championship in Atlantic City will vault them into the top spot. The field is thick but I think “Mayweather” Martin and crew will be ready for the challenge.

Team IZOD: In this corner Team IZOD is feeling like Clubber Lane in Rocky 3. They are tired of paper champs and want the number one spot especially after winning the MIT. If they raise the banner in AC it’s a no brainer that they should be numero uno.

Maryland Panthers: This squad is hungry after a semifinal run at the Grand Finale. Now they return with a vengeance and will be looking to crash the party. A championship run by this team will cause more chaos in our rankings. But we love it.

CT Elite: These boys caused a lot of noise last season but after an early exit at the Clash they must prove they belong with the elite. They will get an early test with a banger against Maryland Panthers in pool play. This is a rematch of the MDC final a year ago.

DC Assault: The PV squad made their Spotlight debut at the Clash while getting to the Final Four. They enjoyed the bump so much they will be joining us in AC. I think they have enough guard play and the tools to make a run.

Juice All Stars: JA has made Final Four runs in just about every tournament they entered including recently at the MIT. Now they want to taste victory circle and this could happen because the strangest things occur in AC.

Team Final: TF had a rough outing at the Clash. But it was their first tourney of this season so we will give them the benefit of the doubt. Now things get real because they have a pool date with mighty Team IZOD. Hey, there’s nowhere to hide.

Team Nelson: Hopefully this squad is fully healthy so we can really see what they are made of. They have an early matchup with CBC so things could get interesting Saturday morning.

Can We Run Take Over The #1 Spot

With other tournaments going on in the area Basketball Spotlight was still able to pull some of the top 11U teams in the region to America’s Playground. This is a feisty age group and we look forward to watching them get it on. Here’s a breakdown of who will be making the trip this weekend to Atlantic City?

AC Showcase 11U Preview

We Run: The Garden State crew continued their hot streak by winning the AGame Super Shootout. The #2 team in the region has a chance to take over the top spot with a good showing at the AC Showcase. Guard Jalen Brooks and newcomer Luther Muhammad are making strong cases for Player Of The Year.


Delaware Royalty: DR proved once they are fully stocked they are capable of getting things done. They gave WR a tough loss during pool play at AGame and might meet them again in Atlantic City. Kiyon Johnson is definitely one to watch.

T Town Ballers: I told you guys this squad was dangerous and they showed their worth this past weekend in Virginia. Now they should be ready to make a serious run in AC. Nasir Downing and Quashawn Lane provide a solid 1-2 punch.

Natural Ballers: The Clash For The Cup champs are back for another title run. Their scrappy style gives them a serious chance of winning the crown. Look for Coach Tank to have his boys ready to go.


Team NJ ABC: Jalen Gaffney is an impact player on this age level and if this squad has Anthony Hoggard playing up they will be able to hold their own. The stage is set and lights will be bright.


Maryland Spartans: They made some serious runs at the Spotlight events as a 10U squad. They were runner up finishers at the AC Showcase and the MDC. Now we will see if they have enough strength to gain the banner.

LI Lightning: Dingles crew is known to play hard the NYC way. This is their first Spotlight event of the season and we will be watching them closely. The Lightning name has legacy on the grammar school level.

Atlantic City Showcase Rules And Regulations

Refunds: There will be no refunds for any team pulling out of this event.

Forfeits: Forfeits will be enforced to keep the games on time. Any teams that purposely forfeits because of non pool advancement will not be allowed to enter any other Basketball Spotlight Events.

Playing Times: All Games Use Stop Clocks

10U Division- 2 (12 Minutes Halves)
11U Division- 2 (13 Minute Halves)
12U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)
13U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)
14U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)

Fouls:
Foul Out- 5 Fouls
1-1 Bonus- 10 Fouls
Double Bonus- 13 Fouls

Game Time and Grace Period:
Each Team is responsible of being at the gym at least 15 minutes before their scheduled game. There will be no grace period allowed for any games. There will only be a 5 minute warm up time before the game and 2 minutes at halftime.

Overtime: 3 minutes.

Time Outs:
There will two full timeouts a half (4 per game) for each team. No carry over and no 30 seconds time outs.

Uniforms: Each Team must have two sets of uniforms (light and dark).

Mercy Rule:
If a team is ahead by 20 points or more with 2 minutes remaining in the contest the game will be called at that point. The team ahead by 20 will be awarded the victory.

Player Ejections:
Any player ejected from a game will be suspended the next game. Any player involved in or ejected for fighting will be suspended the remainder of the tournament.

Birth Certificates:
All teams must have birth certificates for each player on their roster in case of a challenge. Each team will be allowed unlimited grade exceptions. Grade Exceptions must have paperwork. AAU Rules are enforced in terms of age.

Challenges: Must be made before the game and will cost the challenging team $60. If the challenging team is correct their money will be refunded.

Daily Admissions: All Facility Matters Will Be Handled By Atlantic City High School including entry fee and seating.

Tie Breaker Criteria (In Order):
1. Won-Loss Record
2. Head to Head Competition
3. Point System (Margin Of Victory)- Any team winning by more than 15 points will only be rewarded 15 points for the victory. So if you win by 20 points you still will be rewarded only 15 points.
4. Least Amount of Points allowed in Pool Play
5. Coin Flip

Attention: Any teams that don't complete the tournament including 3rd Place games will be subject to be omitted from future Basketball Spotlight Events.

Any rules not mentioned above will be worked out fairly at the discretion of the tournament director.

Diary Of A Baller: Lamarr "Fresh" Kimble (Team Final) Entry #15

Hello Basketball World. This you boy "Fresh". I know I have missed the past couple of weeks and I'm sorry for that but, times have been a little rough. On February 17, I got an orange cast on my foot. I ended up fracturing my ankle in a middle school practice. Since then I have been keeping my head in the books and keeping my mind strong. Sometimes I just wanted to try and cut the cast but, what's the outcome of that? Not being able to play basketball for even longer. I definitely did not want that to happen. So I thought of this as gift from God. I was able to see the game from a coach’s perspective. So I watched a lot of basketball: NBA, NCAA and even Maya Moore. I did not just watch the game but, I watched how the game was being played the right way. I studied players especially Dwayne Wade and how he changes gears in a split second. I watched youtube clips and studied how to split players off of screens and how to get myself open without the ball. I went to Team Final practices and watched the team grow without me. While being on the sideline I was able to see some things we are lacking. I will be addressing these issues with my team when I return.

I also have been spending time with my second family Rex and Tyheem. I’ve been watching Tyheem and been giving him some pointers I know and he has been giving me some pointers. He is the most underrated point guard on the East Coast. I think you will be hearing his name much more. I get my cast off March 15 and possibly go through rehab. But, when I get back I will take in consideration all the things I have learned. Just remember you can do anything you want to if you put your mind to it and an injury could be a good thing. Hype Basketball Presents: Tyler Dorsey Mixtape

Hype Basketball was present at the Basketball Spotlight Clash For The Cup. The scouting service put together highlights clips for some of the players including highly touted guard Tyler Dorsey (Cali Styles). Dorsey helped lead his team to the championship and represented his name well in front of a capacity crowd in Neptune, NJ.

Isaiah Briscoe Selects St. Benedict's Prep

Briscoe Is St. Benedicts Bound

After months of speculation Isaiah Briscoe had announced that he will attend St. Benedicts Prep in Newark, NJ. Briscoe is currently in the race for the Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Year Honors while putting together a spectacular campaign this season. We got a chance to talk to his father George Briscoe to get some insight and here’s what he had to say.

BS: Why St. Benedicts Prep?
GB: For nearly a year, my wife and I have made an assertive effort to do research on which high schools offered the balanced package of Quality of Life, Academics and Athletics for our son Isaiah. When it was all said and done St. Benedict’s fit the bill. As for the Basketball Program, Coach McLeod presence played a huge part in our decision. I have known coach since his days of playing high school ball. I have quietly witnessed his growth as a role model as well as a good coach along with his coaching staff, especially Assistant Coach Brian Crawford, who I’ve known for over 25 years. Coach McLeod has created a family atmosphere at St. Benedict’s and Isaiah loves it.

BS: What other schools were you guys interested in?
GB: Hudson Catholic, St Peter’s Prep., St. Patrick’s, Seton Hall Prep., and Blair Academy, etc., my family would like to thank all the high schools showing interest in Isaiah.

BS: How can St. Benedicts improve his game?
GB: Mike, I tell you what, you walk in a St. Benedict’s practice and you would think you were at a major Division I Basketball Program. The wealth of basketball knowledge led by Coach McLeod and his staff has been very impressive. I’m not totally sure if it will translate into improving his game, but I’m sure we will not pass on the opportunity.

BS: Where do you see him potential wise?
GB: Like most fathers who have played the game of basketball and understand the humbling experiences it can bring to one’s life, at this point, I just pray Isaiah continues to work hard and maybe one day position himself to be able to use basketball as a vehicle to a prosperous living.

Team Final Cruised To The AC Showcase Crown

Ray Lawry scored 19 points including 2 treys and Malik Ellison added 11 markers Team Final defeated F.A.C.E.S. 51-33 to win the Atlantic City Showcase 12 and Under Championship. Trey Lowe was on fire knocking down 4 treys and finishing with 17 points. The AC Showcase returns March 19th and 20th with some high level talent. Don't miss this event.

Network Basketball Presents: Train Like A Pro Camp With Special Guest Tyreke Evans

Network Basketball Presents “Train Like A Pro” Basketball Camp with special guest Tyreke Evans and Jason Thompson. This training event will take place Saturday March 26 at Life Center Academy in Burlington NJ. This camp is designed to expose the youth to the levels of training utilized on the professional levels. This will educate and motivate the athlete to increase their level of training to prepare them for elevated levels of play. Each camper will receive a reversible practice jersey and be individually tested for agility, speed, quickness, and explosive power. Test results will be recorded and a customized 3-month workout program will be given to each camper in their personal folder at the end of the camp.

Date: Saturday March 26th
Time: 7:30 am to 4:30 pm
Place: Life Center Academy
Price: $150.

The one day camp will include:
• Athletic Preparation
• Strength and Conditioning
• SAQ (Strength, Agility and Quickness)
• Power Development
• Fundamental Skills Sets (Ball Handling, Shooting, Passing, Court Awareness, Communication, Defense and Basketball IQ)

The Game Of The Year Is Finally Here: #1 St. Patricks vs. #2 St. Anthony

Can Mike Gilchrist Carry St. Pats Over St. Ants ?

The Game Of The Year is finally here. Tonight at Rutgers University the top two high school teams in the country will face off. #1 St. Patricks and #2 St. Anthony will tangle for the Parochial B North Title. This game has been titled as the Game Of The Century. Basketball Spotlight will be in the building as a fan. We will keep you updated on our twitter. If you do not have a ticket, don’t worry NJ.com will be live streaming the game on their website. Check out the video preview of this historic event. The winner of this game will likely win the USA National Title.

Team Takeover Baby Ballers Getting Busy At The Spotlight!

The Nike Team Takeover 10U squad came to the Clash For The Cup and took home the prize. They have some serious young talent and we look forward to checking them out in the future. Check out this video showing some of their highlights from this event.

AC Showcase 09 Flashback: Team Nelson Wins Another Crown

Team Nelson Continues It's Winning Ways

Christian Irons scored 13 points including 3 treys while Dion Linton added 9 markers as Team Nelson defeated Team NJABC 50-39 to win the Atlantic City Showcase 13 and Under Championship. Wade Baldwin nailed 4 treys and finished with 15 points in the loss. The Atlantic City Showcase 2011 is shaping up to be the best ever.

AGame Super Shootout 11U Recap: Late Rally Lifts We Run

#2 We Run Wins Again

We Run made a late run to defeat Delaware Royalty 39-33 to win the 11U Championship of the AGame Super Shootout. The Garden State squad had a balanced scoring attack in their victory.

Top Performers

Luther Muhammad Forward (We Run)- When things looked bleak for We Run Luther went to work on both ends of the floor. His coast to coast drive helped to change the momentum of the game. On defense he played the passing lanes and intercepted a couple of passes when they pressed the rock.

Shelton Applewhite Guard (We Run)- The big guard was able to convert a few buckets after receiving the rock in transition. I like Applewhite because he’s big enough to get a clean shot whenever he wants.

Nas Amos Guard (We Run)- The pint size guard squeezed through the defense in an effort to run his team’s offense. Amos dribbles the rock so low it’s very difficult for any defender to get a hand on it.


Kenny Jones Guard (We Run)- Jones is another heady guard that I like with this group. He can play either guard spot but will probably end up playing the point. His ball handling skills and ability to create should take him far.

Kiyon Johnson Guard (Delaware Royalty)- Johnson did damage in this contest. His versatility allows him to dominate the game at times. He was quick enough to get past smaller guards and big enough to score over shot blockers.

Jamal Whittlesey Forward (Delaware Royalty)- Jamal was very dominant for most of the game. But when We Run started to apply their pressure defense his guards couldn’t get him the pill.
