MDC 13 and Under Preview

The 13 and Under Division at the MDC rivals the 11’s as the best bracket. Some of the top teams in the region are in the building which means the weekend should be outstanding. Here’s preview of some of the top teams and players that will be present.

MDC 13 and Under Preview

Educated Athletes: Can anyone dethrone the boys from Chester. They are looking for their 3rd straight MDC crown. They bring toughness and experience to the party. They also have last MDC’s Mr. Memorial Day Darius Robinson.

Shooting Stars: The North Jersey team plays with a lot of spunk and fire. They are scrappy, talented and won the NJ Div. 2 crown. Beware!

NY Panthers: The NYC boys have been known for a while on the AAU scene. This group has some stud players including bruiser Jordan Washington.

New Heights Red- Formerly the Harlem Kings they made quick noise on the scene winning numerous tournaments including the Rebounds Super Regional. They have good guard play and quality bigs.

Playaz: The Yankees won the NJ State Crown and have the confidence to run through the field. The backcourt of Matthew Johnson and Kavon Stewart will give any opposing coach nightmares.

Linden Ballers: Dennis Mayes boys made it to the finals in the state tourney. They possess that Linden toughness and will be a tough out for any club. Look out for guard Mykhal Corbit.

Trenton Hurricanes: Trenton made a deep run in the MDC last season and finished 4th in the state. Nate King can score a lot of points quickly and if Dwayne Foreman is on they are tough to beat.

Camp Pocono Blazers: Don’t sleep on Camp Pocono because they are capable of knocking anyone off. Check for the trio of Travis Rocida, Gary Whritenhour and Conner Cuccinelli.

Long Island Lightning: The Lightning have some serious names on their roster and they are ready to show them off at the MDC. Jason Boswell joins a talented bunch including Ethan Telfair, Isiah Lewis and Dave “The Kangaroo” Henry.

Garden State Knights: The Knights have improved throughout the season and should be ready to hang at the MDC. They are very steady and should be able to scare a few teams.

Delaware Hawks: The squad from the First State are coming off a finals loss at the prestigous Kingwood Classic. This is their first trip to the MDC and they are poised to make an immediate impact. Dean Wilson is one to watch.

Other Teams Include: New Heights (White), New Heights (Blue), CJ All Stars, Asbury Park and Team Underrated.

Diary Of A Baller: Kyle Anderson Entry #16

Wassup everybody this is Kyle Anderson signing in on my weekly diary to tell everyone how my week went. This week was OK but next week I know is going to be good. But let me get started on the week.

A lot of workouts this week except for Monday. Monday was A rainy day, so not much to do. Tuesday I had two workouts. First one was with North Bergen High School at 5 o'clock. I worked out with them for an hour than went over to Paterson and worked out with Kent Culuco. Long day that night. The next two days were straight days at the park. I went two days out there without losing. LOL! Friday, after A long day of school I took the day off and hung out with my friends at the movies.

The weekend finally came and I played in the GBOA tournament out in Brooklyn. I played with the Playaz 17s and on Saturday we had 3 games. First game we played Conneticut Select and we won. I had 4 assist and 2 block shots,1 TO but I didn't score. The 2nd game I played alright, only 2 assists. We played Gauchos 16S...(Duron Lamb and Co.) In between games we went over to iS8 to watch our seniors (Mike Rosario and Crew). They smacked the Panthers in the Semis. As for GBOA our day was over! Our whole weekend at that! So the next day Sunday was the iS8 chip. Our seniors played the Shooting Stars who consisted of Samardo Samuels, Tahshawn Taylor, Devin Ebanks, Erv Walker, Mookie Jones, and a few others. Man they were unstoppable! They went their first 7 Possessions with all buckets. We lost bye I don't know how much but we got smacked. Shouts to my man Jio who held it down with 41! Shout to my mans Sterling for getting iS8 Freshman of the year too. I ended the day at my cousins graduation party. He just graduated from Law School. CONGRATS AHMAD, I'M VERY PROUD OF YOU!!! Saw all my family and had A good week.

Next weekend is Bob Gibbons in North Carolina, CAN'T WAIT! I'll let all know how it goes.

Payce!!!!!!!!! =)

MDC 11 and Under Preview!

The 11 and Under Bracket is stacked with teams and players. This might be the most intense division in the MDC. Numerous area champs are in the mix and this one should go down to the wire. Here’s a breakdown of the teams and players to keep an eye out on.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 11 and Under Preview

Long Island Lightning- The reigning MDC Champs come in with a loaded roster and are thirsty to repeat. Jianni Ford and Justin Roberts make up a serious backcourt. You know the Lightning will have some other gunners as well.

SJ Blitz- The MDC runner ups will be hungry to take a run for the crown again. They keep some quick and creative guards while always giving a 100% effort on the floor.

Gauchos- The Choz jumped in late but came to crash the party. They have some excellent guard play and Coach Science pushes them to the limit. They are a realistic contender for the crown. Watch out for Jaquan McKennon.

FACES- FACES had a tough defeat during the state tournament and feel some scores need to be settled. They have some capable scorers and can run up the score board quickly.

Team MVP- The boys from Trenton made it to the finals of the state tourney. They have that championship taste in their mouths and will be looking to munch on somebody. Trey Lowe and Herb Ellis are a tough backcourt to deal with.

JSL Hoops- JSL have took some lumps this season and look to make a serious impact once the games begin. They too have some good guard play and probably are a big man away from changing their fortunes.

Linden Ballers: If you see Linden on your schedule it’s time to put up your dukes. Tha Ballers love to grind it out and give their best effort. Keep an eye on Kyle Phipps.

King Street Kings- The Kings are one of the hottest teams in the region. This crew has won the state crown for 11 and under Div. 1 and 12 under Div. 2. They apply a lot of pressure on both ends of the floor.

Harvest Knights- The Knights might possess one of the most talented players in the bracket in Malik Ellison. He’s capable of changing a game on his own.

Other Teams: New Heights, Asbury Park Rec., Chester Pride, Team Underrated, Philly Aztecs, CJ Hawks and Hollis Biddies (ILOY).

We feel this will make both teams very comfortable which is important in this highly competitive event. In the event that a team doesn't have a rep for the scores table we will provide someone.

Diary of A Baller: Kyle Anderson Entry #15

Wassup everyone, Kyle Anderson here again just to fill you in on how my week was. This week wasn't anything special but it was A good week. I have to get back on track and start my week on Monday.

Sunday I remember tellin' everyone how I played top 5 worse games ever, and I promised I'd be in the gym or at the park everyday workin'on my game for DC tournament this weekend. So Monday I went to the park in the next town over. No one was there so I didn't want to walk back to the park up my block so I stayed around and hung out with my friends from over there. I got back home around 8 and went up to the park from 8pm to about 10:30. Long workout. Called it A night after that.

The next day was Tuesday and I had to workout with Kent Culuko, the all time 3pt leader at James Madison University. He's A really good shooting instructor and has his own shooting school and camp in Fair Lawn, N.J. We worked out at the Jewish Community Center in Fair Lawn. After that I had practice with the Playaz which was really boring since we aint have 10 guys to scimmage. Wednesday I had A game with Team Paterson's 15s in Paterson at Roberto Clemente middle school. My game was back up to normal, FINALLY! We played the Jersey Knghts 17s. I played alright not bad not great just good. I got the steal to put the game in to overtime. And we won the game in OT. We won that game and we played the Roadrunners next game with Kyree Irving. He's Real! That's A should have won game but we didn't pull it out. We lost by 2 I played OK again. We had too many oppertunities just didn't pull it out.

Friday I drove down to Washington DC with the Playaz. We played two games on Saturday. Pool play was A breeze we smacked teams by 30. Sunday was when the lights were on. We had 3 games on Sunday. First one was against the Wisconsin Generals where I had my highest scoring game with 12. The next game was A tough one. We played Triple Threat. That was my best game. I had A couple nice moves and we pulled that one out only by two. But A win is A win. We finally got to the chip. We played the Maryland Bulls. First possession came off A screen and hit A deep two. Then, the next possession I spun off A kid and kicked to Myles Mack and he hit A 3. The next play Myles Mack kicked out to Myles Davis for A 3. The next play, And 1 by Jordan Allen. Ten points in the first minute and A half. I knew it was going to be A blowout from there. I played well that game but didn't finish the rest of the 2nd half because my knee was sore. And it wasn't even the knee I just came off of crutches from. CRAZY! Anyway, we won the CHIP. Add that to the other championships we have won this spring. I'm writing this on my way back now. So that's the end of my week and it was A great week.

I also wanted to say Happys Mothers Day to my mother, aunt Pattie, aunt Lynda, aunt Lisa, aunt Lona, Grandma Foreman and Grandma Pookes (R.I.P.) and all the other mothers. Shouts to Mrs Laura Davis (mother of Myles Davis), Mrs Jackie Gibbs (mother of Sterling), Mrs Sylvia Oliver (mother of Charles), Mrs Sandy Mack (mother of Myles Mack) Mrs Dingle (mother of Daniel and Dana), Mrs Ford (mother of Sevario) Mrs. Cynthia Frankle (mother of Ryan) Mrs Strickland (mother of Dexter, she always speaks to me), Mrs Smith (mother of Dimitrius), Mrs Grey (mother of Vaughn), Mrs Sanders (mother of Jermaine). All the mamas who speak to me everytime I see them and that support me. All the Playaz mothers and Lightning mothers that get me Gatorades when I ask or ask for this or that. Thanks

Well its 10:54 and I have to go back to school tomorrow and have to go to bed. I'll be back next weekend. PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basketball Spotlight MDC Preview and Schedule: 10U Division

The Baby Ballerz will be well represented in the 10U bracket. There’s some heavy hitters from New York and New Jersey will be taking the floor. Here’s a breakdown of the teams, their pools and two day schedule.
Team Battle: The reigning NJ State Champs come in with a lot of swagger after winning the State title and Riverside Church tourney. They have some good guard play and are well coached. Tyus Battle has a chance to be special.

New Heights NYC: New Heights made it to the finals for the MLK and had a good showing at both Team Kobe Dream Classic and Riverside Tourney. They will be ready to do battle once the tourney kicks off.

KBR: Made some noise in the NJ State Tourney reaching the Final Four. They’re now out for respect and would love to knock off some of the heavy weights in this field.

FACES: Rob’s Cole squad was runner ups in the states and had the title in control in the first half. The winners of the MLK Classic seem to have revenge on the minds and a tourney victory at the MDC should grant them some props.

Playtime Basketball: These guys seem like a live bunch of players. It will be real interesting to see what they have going on once the ball is thrown up.

Long Island Lightning: The Lightning is coming in as the sleeper in this bracket. They have a heavy program rep but I haven’t heard much about this particular team.

Riverside Church: The NYC powerhouse from the past seems to be rebuilding their programs through their young squads. They have a serious rep and will be looking to win the crown especially after falling to Team Battle by 1 in the own tourney.

Asbury Park Rec.: One thing is certain is that AP REC. will come to play. They have some serious pressure defense and have the comfort of playing in their home area.

NJ 11 and Under Top Performers

Jack Laffy Was A Problem On The Blocks

The 11 and Under Division had some exciting games and some big time players. Here’s a look at some of the top players in this age bracket that were not mentioned in the championship article.

11U Top Performers

Jack Laffy Forward (Bayshore Bulldogs)- Laffy was a load on the blocks and did much damage throughout the tourney. His has soft hands, good touch and outstanding post moves for a kid this age. Laffy was a thorn in the side for all the squads he encountered. Jack even showed some long range touch from the perimeter.

Jack Byrnes Forward (Bayshore Bulldogs)- Byrnes was Mr. Versatile once again. He hit the boards, blocked some shots and got into the scoring column. He does a lot of different things for this squad and plays with enormous passion.

Brendan Barry Guard (Bayshore Bulldogs)- Barry handles the point duties for BYAA and made some clutch plays to help his team to knock off CJ Future Stars. He nailed a big trey that gave his squad the lead just when it looked like the game was over.

Miles Powell Guard (CJ Future Stars)- Powell is a little off from behind the arc but did manage to bang home a trey to send the game into overtime. Miles looked good going to the cup and scoring. He has a lot of bounce in his game and knows how to create his own shot.

Justin Kovacevich Forward (CJ Future Stars)- Justin made some good plays when he got the opportunity. He scored inside and out while being willing to stick his head for a rebound or two.

Herbie Ellis Guard (Team MVP)- Ellis made some big shots and was hot from the outside against Linden Ballers. He attacked the basket well and knows how to maneuver his shot around defenders. He can score in bunches.

Jason Peoples Guard (Linden Ballers)- Peoples caught fire against Team MVP from behind the arc. He’s a rhythm shooter that can catch a shoot from long range. He also gets after ball handlers on defense.

Kyle Phipps Guard (Linden Ballers)- Phipps continues to get better every time I watch him rock. He getting better running the team and his confidence has his game playing on another level.

NJ State 11U Recap: King Street Kings Wins Another Crown!

Bryce Aiken scored 18 points and Temple Gibbs added 13 markers as King Street Kings added another trophy to their collection by defeating Team MVP 57-40 to win the NJ 11and Under Championship. Trey Lowe scored 10 points in the loss for Team MVP.

Championship Top Performers

Bryce Aiken Guard (KSK)- It was another stellar performance by Aiken. He doesn’t look it but he’s very strong with the rock and knows how to score in various ways. When his jumper is falling like it was today it makes his dribble drives more effective. He loves draining treys that breaks the opposing team’s heart.

Justin Salem Guard (KSK)- This was my first look at Salem and he brings a lot of game to the table. He’s very poised and will either bury the jumper, convert a layup or throw a swift pass. He gives KSK another dangerous backcourt prodigy.

Temple Gibbs Guard (KSK)- Gibbs just bullied his way to the hole while carrying a few Team MVP players in the process. Gibbs got his teammates involved by getting into the lane and dropping off dimes. He constantly puts pressure on the defense with his sharp handle and ability to get to the bucket.

James Wright Forward (Team MVP)- Wright made some good moves inside even after the game got out of reach. He has a knack for scoring but will need to work on going hard to his left.

Trey Lowe Guard (Team MVP)- Lowe was cold from the perimeter but still did other things like moving the rock and getting the break started. He’s always a threat on the floor.

Baby Ballerz: Joey Krempa

Name: Joey Krempa

AAU Team: Team Battle

Position: Guard

Class: 4th Grade

Breakdown: Krempa is a point guard that doesn’t mind getting down and dirty for his squad. During the 10 and Under Championship Joey was one a few Team Battle players that started with a spark. He made some crisp moves to the basket including a spin that had the crowd roaring. The future Linden Tiger also practices their trademark defense.

Baby Ballerz: Scott Scherer

Name: Scott Scherer

AAU Team: NJ Shore Shots

Position: Forward

Class: 5th Grade

Breakdown: Scott plays on the blocks for the Shore Shots. He spends most of his time blocking shots, rebounding and scoring inside. I got a chance to check him out against Asbury Park Rec. and he held his own. He’s very fundamentally sound and has some strength at a young age.

Baby Ballerz Feature: Jashaun Agosto

Jashaun Agosto as Eric Johnson stated on Komo News 4 is a "Freak of Nature". In a good way that is. He has been playing basketball competitively since he was 4 yrs old. The boys and girls club let him play with 1st and 2nd graders before he was even in kindergarten. Everyone knew at that time he was special. Averaging 20 points a game every season playing boys and girls club from K-3rd grade always playing vs older kids. With most games he would have 90% of his teams points. His Father Julio (The assistant coach of the 5th grade Warriors) started a 6th grade AAU Team with Jashaun 9 yrs old at the time playing starting point guard. In 5 leagues and Tournaments he once again averaged 20+ points a game playing up 2 grades. Thats when Ray Asadi (Washington Warriors Head Coach) took notice. Jashaun has been on the Washington Warriors since 2007 4th grade. As the newest member of this elite team he fit in perfectly. Since Jashaun has been on the team the 5th grade Warriors haven't lost a single game locally in their age group with him on the court.

Some people may assume he is a practice player. They see his intense workouts and then when watching him in the games, they don't think he shows out enough (showcase his ability). Jashaun has been trained to do exactly what the coach asks of him. He is obsessed with making the right play, not the show boating play. He is fundamentally sound in his skills and has the ability to do anything he desires on the court due to his hard work in practice. Keep in mind he plays for the #1 AAU 5th grade basketball team in the Pacific North West. As of April 2008 they won the National Qualifier in Seattle (western washington) by 20 plus points and Spokane (eastern washington) by 30 points.

Jashaun averages 15 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 5 steals a game as the shortest kid on the court for his team. In the Eastern Washington Qualifier April 2008 he had two games back to back where he had 21 points one game (with 4 three pointers) and 18 points the other. He is the point guard on a supremely talented team.

In practice he made 48 out of 58 three pointers around the world. With every day making at least 34 out of 44.

He made 59 free throws in a row. With every day making at least 50 in a row.

He makes 250 elbow (free throw jumpers) without missing 2 in a row.

He puts in the work with his fathers support to be the most skilled basketball player on the planet.

But there is more to Jashaun than just basketball. He was in the Tacoma Tribune as Student of the month, he is featured on the City of Federal Way City web site, he was on the front page of the Seattle Times Sunday Sports page, He was in the Seattle P.I., and the Oregonian. He also runs AAU Track with the Seattle Speed. He is currently ranked in the top 3 for the 1600, 800, 400, and he is in the top 8 in the 100, 200, and the 50 in the Nation. Jashaun also played football as the running back for the Auburn Panthers. He won MVP for offensive player of the year with his football team. One game he had 5 carries, 3 of them touchdowns, for 260 yrds. April 2008 he played with the Harlem Wizards in Seattle Washington. JaShaun was the crowd favorite as he threw ally oops, hit three's and took the adults to the rim showcasing his unbelievable dribbling skills. He is the complete athlete. This year he will attend AAU National Championships for Basketball and Track & Field. How does he do it? Well, the Seattle Sports and Fittness tested his VO2 Levels and they are off the charts for an adult athlete let alone a 10 yr old. He rated at 66 and he is projected after puberty to be in the high 80's. Which is higher than Lance Armstrong. Just to put it in perspective most adult athletes are in the 30's to 40's.

Jashaun is in the gym 4 hours a day, 7 days a week practicing with his father outside of Track and Basketball official practices. He has recieved National recognition for his talent and supreme work ethic. Jashaun is the perfect example of the pay offs of hard work and dedication. He has been on National Tv for his Basketball and Track skills. He was featured on ABC World News Tonight, Komo News 4 two times, CBS sports, Good Morning America, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The Tonight Show has also called up Jashaun wanting to book him on a future show. But with all this attention he is down to earth and focussed on college. He understands that he is a Student Athlete. God has blessed him with some amazing ability and incredible personal drive. Jashaun doesn't want to be the next Kobe....He wants to be better than Kobe and his other favorite players Allen Iverson and Chris Paul.

Gauchos 13U Impressive In Ohio

Gauchos Had A Very Strong Showing In Ohio!

Congratulations to the NY GAUCHOS 13U! They traveled to Akron Ohio and competed in the King James Shooting Stars Classic. There were 48 teams in their age bracket, including some of the top AAU teams in the country. They faced teams from PA, DC, GA, MI and the top teams from Ohio. They won their pool by going undefeated (3-0) and marched through the playoff bracket where the competition intensified. Their playoff run included the DC Blue Devils (#1 in MD) who they defeated on the way to the Championship! NY was the talk of the tournament in this age group, and competing coaching staffs were in attendance to catch a glimpse of the GAUCHOS. In the championship game they fell just shy of bringing home gold losing to the Cincinnati Lakers 74-69. The Gauchos 6-1 campaign was a total team effort illustrated by the fact that they had several different leading scorers during the tournament. Each player; Shane Rector, Naje Greene, Terrell Barron, Kevin ‘Noah’ Rosario, Jamal ‘Marley’ Pinkard, Lamont Shariff Pebles, Shaquille ‘Kealy’ Davis, Leroy ‘Truck’ Flood, and Parker Lalonde made a major contribution. The team was extremely successful playing that NY Lockdown defense. Reaching the Championship in 2 of the top tournaments this year (Lebron Classic and MIT) solidifies this team as one of the top Teams in the country!

Diary Of A Baller: Kyle Anderson Entry #14

What’s happening everybody, KA back to tell how my week and weekend went. Now I am sure everyone knows how this goes, but in case you don’t, I’m here to let everyone know how my week went and for this diary I normally start my week on Monday but I included Mondays work in my last diary so I’m going to start with Tuesday.

Tuesday I went to work out with Paterson Catholic, my High School team next year. The workout were good and a few college coaches were there so I enjoyed it. Wednesday night I had an IS8 game, I played alright -not that good, but not bad at all. I only had 2 pts. Thursday and Friday I made the worse decisions of my life - I didn’t touch a ball for 2 days and I sure did pay for it. Friday, I went to see Iron Man at the movies. Definitely in my top 10 favorite. Man, it was a great movie -but like I said, BAD CHOICE as I should have worked out that day. So Saturday I had a game with the Playaz and played the worse game, definitely in my top 5 worse games in history. I had 2 pts and about 4 TOs. TERRIBLE!!!!!!! The next day I had a game again with ‘em and wasn’t as bad, nevertheless was bad again. This game I had 4 pts, it was still terrible. I learned a valuable lesson. Never go two days without touching a ball. Next week is the DC tourney and I will be at a gym or park everyday of the week so I am back on track. I’ll let you know how next week goes.

Youngters Invade RBK Headliner Tryout

Okoro might have earned a RBK U invite.

The RBK Headliner Camp is designed to help Reebok locate hidden talent for their upcoming camps. The usual attendants are high players have traveled under the radar and those trying to reach the next level. This weekend the camp was held at St. Raymonds High School and Basketball Spotlight was called to be one of the evaluators. I’m glad we got the call because some of the few grammar school players in building stole the show.

Standout Players

Nkerweum Okoro Guard- The guidelines state that the top players will be rewarded a trip to RBK U if that’s true expect to see this rising frosh in Philly this summer. Okoro showed his total package against the high school ballers. His versatility and knack for scoring stood out among the competition. He’s a threat off the dribble, from the perimeter and on the blocks. The youngster even showed off some court vision with some nice feeds to teammates. The most impressive part of his game is how hard he plays for a young player with so much talent.

Daniel Dingle Forward- Dingle was able to show some flashes even though this type of event is geared towards dribbling guards. He got down on the blocks and scored when he got the opportunity. He has a few more inches to grow and once his body fills out his stock.

Jason Boswell Guard- Boswell was the only 7th Grader in attendance but stood out with his play. The slender wing was able to create with dribble drives and short jumpers. He still will have to add strength before he reaches the high school level but this name is one that will ring bells shortly.

Severio Ford Guard- Ford ran a steady point on the weekend. He picked his spots and made his presnce felt on the floor. His youth showed in some areas but he wasn’t over matched on the floor.

NYC Gauchos Join MDC Field

The NYC Gauchos 11 and Under Squad that won the Show Me Invitational have joined the already loaded 11 and Under MDC field. The 11 and Under Bracket is highly competitive and now features The Gauchos, Long Island Lightning, King Street Kings, FACES, Linden Ballers, Team MVP, South Jersey Blitz and many others.

SJ Blitz 13's Win Jamfest

The SJ Blitz won the 13u Division of the Providence Jamfest Tournament last weekend in Rhode Island. There were quite a few high profile teams such as the Harlem Kings, Long island Lightning, Penn Jaguars, New Heights (NY), Trenton Hurricanes, NJ Shoreshots and Rhode Island Hawks who participated in the tournament. They went 5-0 in winning the tournament and every win was by a double digit margin.

In The Spotlight: Al Jahaad Bradford

Name: Al Jahaad Bradford

AAU Team: NJ Pirates

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2014

Breakdown: Mr. Bradford has a small frame but packs a mean punch. I saw the miniature guard this weekend in the 12U State tourney and he brought his game despite being pint size. Bradford attacked defenders with quick dribble drives and got under ball handlers on the defensive end. He plays the game with enormous passion and his play helped the Pirates reach the finals. He and his teammates are confirmed for the Basketball Spotlight MDC.
