Justin Winston made his Spotlight debut at the Tip Off Classic and had an impressive showing. He anchored Team IZOD on both ends of the floor. He blocked shots and hit the boards on defense while scoring and getting put backs on the offensive end. Justin will be heading to the Clash For The Cup with his Team IZOD teammates to chase another banner. We can’t wait to see them next weekend.
The 12U Division at the Baby Baller MLK Classic had some serious talent. Here’s a breakdown of some of the top guard that showcased their game in America’s Playground.
Baby Baller MLK Classic 12U Top Guards Part 2
Atiba Taylor (KSK)- While some players don’t deserve their national rep Taylor definitely deserves his ink. The “Big Guard” as I love to call him was a match up nightmare all weekend. He scored double figures every game while averaging 16 points per contest. What makes him so special besides his size is his willingness to step up in the most intense moments. If he continues to progress as projected the Big Apple might have a special player here.
Luther Muhammad (KSK)- Muhammad has made the transition to the wing very well. He showed improvement with his ball handling and decision making from the two guard spot. I do think he needs to work on his jumper which will open up the driving lanes. He averaged 14 points a game while helping KSK reach the quarterfinals.
Justin Nwosu (DC Assault)- Justin displayed much of his scoring power early in this event. He had 16 points against NJABC and 14 versus Team Final. He has some good offensive skills but seemed to slow down in the semifinals and the championship. His team’s lack of players took its toll this kid during this event.
BJ Saliba (Playtime)- Saliba helped Playtime make the final four by banging home mid range jumpers and scoring in transition. His best scoring game of the tournament was when he scored 14 points against NWK in their pool play win. He also hit a couple of big shots during their semifinal win against KSK.
Austin Laughlin (NJABC)- The high scoring guard came to play against finalist DC Assault by going for 20 points against Potomac Valley group. He has good size and showed tremendous range by knocking down 3 treys during this contest. He can really stroke it.
Kareem Williams (NWK)- Williams is one of the small pesky guards that Newark is known for. He wasn’t fazed by the bigger defenders he faced and showed it by charging the lane and scoring with floaters. He has a chance to be another fine guard in “Brick Cities” long list of backcourt ballers.
Fred Crowell (DC Assault)- His team was down 20 to NJABC and Fred woke up. The combo guard scorched the net from the perimeter by nailing 4 treys and leading them to a come from behind win over the Garden State squad. When he puts his mind to it he can really perform on the hardwood.
Fahmir Ali (ECE)- After performing on the 11U with Team Rebels, Ali brought his game up to the 12U level and did damage. The smooth scoring guard let things fly from the perimeter by knocking down deep shots and mid range buckets. He showed tremendous endurance being able to perform on both levels.
Alex Morton (NJ Shore Shots)- Usually known as a spot up shooter Alex showed some toughness handling the pill in this hostile environment. I was impressed with his ability to make plays for his teammates and hold off pressing defenders.
Marquette Holmes (Alexandria Titans)- Holmes is an athletic lefty that attacks the rim and can finish tough shots. He showed the potential to be a game breaking scorer if he can keep his moves under control. He’s definitely a noticeable athlete that’s worth keeping an eye on.
Giberto Cue made an appearance Spotlight at the Tip Off Classic with New Renaissance and had an instance impact. The point guard posted some good numbers while helping his team reach the quarterfinals. His team is scheduled for the Clash For The Cup and we are anxious to see their work. Devonte Green scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Team Scan defeated F.A.C.E.S. 58-47 to win the Basketbull Jr. Hoop Hall Championship. Coach Jamaal Womack was happy with his team’s effort. “This was great tune up tournament to get ready for bball spotlight. With four players in double digits a balanced attack help secure another championship. We believe our team worked hard and got better this weekend" Womack said.

Baby Baller MLK Classic 12U Top Guards Part 1
Jalen Lecque (Playtime Panthers)- The purpose of this event was to give the Baby Ballers a stage to shine and Lecgue took full advantage. He starred as a scorer and passer all weekend but really stepped in their quarterfinal win versus KSK. Jalen scored a game high 21 points including a big time trey ball in the closing minutes. He had a big time weekend.
Jahid Jenkins (NWK)- His team suffered a few tough losses but I like some of the attributes he possesses. Jenkins has great size and some wiggle to his game which is always a plus. They way he glided through the lane and used his body to shield blockers while scoring reminded me of a young Randy Foye. Keep your eye on this kid. I see some bright things in his future.
Zegary Scott (Playtime Panthers)- Scott proved to be a tough backcourt mate with Lecque. He was in the mix applying the defensive pressure and converting turnovers into easy buckets. He can play both guard spots well but is more suited for running the point. He’s one of the most underrated guards in the region.
Preston Bacon (DC Assault)- Every kid dreams of making a buzzer beater and Bacon’s fantasy came true as he nailed a quarter court shot as time expired in their semifinal win versus Playtime. The southpaw was also the only player on his team playing with energy as they loss the finals. To their credit they only had 6 players.
Alonzo Huron (NWK)- The pint size guard from “Brick City” has a lot of game. He breezed through the defense while creating space with a low but slick handle. Some defenders might take Huron lightly because of his appearance but he definitely will hurt their feelings with his play.
Quashawn Lane (Team Final)- Lane came over after starring for T Town Ballers last season and hasn’t skipped a beat. In fact his best game was when he tallied 13 points in their pool play win against his former squad. We will be watching to see how he progresses with his new team.
B3 Sports is proud to bring you the Battle Of The Bridge (New York vs. New Jersey). This event will bring the top AAU Teams from NY against their counterparts from the Garden State. Come watch these youngsters look horns next Sunday at St. Mary’s High School in Elizabeth, NJ.

What’s up basketball world? It has been a very challenging but great week. I did a lot of studying and managed to spend a good amount of time on the court. Saturday night was spent with my mom; I had a lot of fun just hanging with my mom and the rest of my family just spending quality time.
At Hoops America on Sunday, we worked in the half court on various moves to the rim, off a catch pivot and sweep facing the rim. We also worked on the same moves to the rim but with our back to the basket. Dad showed up about 1 hour into the clinic and watched quietly, which he has been doing a lot lately. Oh no, he still will say things but he seems to be backing off a bit these days. I guess he is preparing himself for high school. As he always said to my brother and I, “Your work ethic is your own.” “One day soon you will have to correct your own mistakes and remember what you learned.”
Monday morning, I woke up sick with a sore throat that I probably caught from my little sister who still goes to daycare and was also sick. She was home for the day also and after few hours of sleep and breakfast from Nana we both felt a lot better. I took the time off from school to catch up on studying for my mid-term exams. Late that night after I took a nap, my dad came home from work and took my brother and I to Green Street to shoot and work on our handle for an hour.
Tuesday, I went to school and was a good day. Nana picked us up from school and after I ate I ran to my bed to take a quick nap before hitting the books. After I studied for a few hours and ate early dinner a few times. My dad came home pissed because the garbage was still in front of the house. After things settled down I asked if we can go work out and we did.
Wednesday school was good and afterwards I went to work with my personal trainer on strength and flexibility. We worked really hard on my hips and did some upper body training. After nana picked me up, I was able to grab a quick few slices of pizza before school practice.
Thursday school was good as usual and after school I had to jump right into my studies. Just a few days left until mid-term exams. Dad came home about 6PM after work in NYC. He was hoping to take me to AAU practice but I told him I had way to much studying to do with games over the weekend and he told me to stay home. Dad no doubt drove to practice without me in his suit from work.
Friday was cool and the day went really fast at school. We all spent the evening at home and ate Shang-Hi style Chinese food for dinner, which we all love.
Saturday, I slept until 12. I had a game at 3 against Mathius, who was one of the top teams in our league and we won a close game. I should mention that Idris was not at the game for whatever reason. However we managed to win by 7 and I had my first 40 pt game.
Sunday Monday, we played in a Martin Luther King Tournament in LI for Team Final and we won all of our games by 25 or more.

The Inaugural Baby Baller MLK Classic had loads of talent in Atlantic City. The 11U Division was small in size but big in substance. Here’s a look at some of the top performers on the 11U level.
Baby Baller MLK Classic 11U Top Performers
Jordan McKoy Guard (Playtime Panthers)- “The Real” McKoy put up huge numbers during this event. He posted 17 points versus Team Nelson, 16 against NWK and 17 in their semifinal win against Team Rebels. Jordan has smoothness beyond his years and makes the game seem so easy.
Mark Bradshaw Guard (Team Nelson)-The lefty looked great in transition and playing alongside Alderman. His 15 points helped TN put away a pesky NWK squad in their pool play match up. He also showed some deep range during this event.
Trevon Alderman Guard (Team Nelson)- The strong guard helped TN rebound from a pool play loss and make it to the finals. He averaged about 18 points a game including a huge 15 in their overtime victory over #1 NJABC. He will be a force to reckon with in this region for years to come.
AJ Hoggard Guard (ECE-NJABC)- This weekend Hoggard didn’t look to score as much as in the past. Instead he was more than willing to deliver the rock to teammates with flair. He primarily played the high post and helped out on the glass on both ends of the floor. He really showed he could impact the game without dominating the rock.
Jagger Zrada Guard (ECE-NJABC)- Zrada showed some toughness while playing in the fire. He was able to knockdown the jumper and made some nifty moves off the dribble. He had 15 points in their semifinal overtime loss to Team Nelson.
Jalen Gaffney Guard (ECE-NJABC)- The addition of Hoggard has allowed Gaffney to step up his scoring. He isn’t bashful when pulling the trigger from deep he tallied 16 in his first game against Team Rebels and 12 in their loss to Team Nelson. He’s definitely playing on a higher confidence level this season.
Raejan Figures Guard (Playtime Panthers)- Figures was a quiet assassin for Playtime. While the defense focused on McKoy and Tanksley, Figures was able to squeeze through the gaps in the defense for buckets. I love his body control and ability to finish at the rim.
Fahmir Ali Guard (Team Rebels)- Ali was one of the hottest guards in the building. He has bulldozer style combined with some unique scoring prowess. He gets it done off the dribble or the catch and shoot mode. He has a chance to be a special player coming from Delaware.
Dontae Scott Forward (Team Nelson)- Scott was one of the strongest post players in this division. He banged the boards hard and was a great contributor in their win over rival NJABC. When his game is on it makes TN a better team.
Mikel Jones Forward (Team Nelson)- Remember this kid's name! Jones is wiry and has a nose for the ball. The only thing thats keeps him from dominating is his lack of strength at this stage. In a few years opponents will have a huge problem on their hands.
Team IZOD, the No. 1 ranked 12U team in the Spotlight top 10, cruised to the Junior Hoophall Classic championship at the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Jalen Brooks and Markquis Nowell both scored 20 points to help IZOD rough up the Massachusetts Shooting Stars in the title game.

The HypeSports Winter Jam in Dallas, Texas was more than just HYPE. It featured some of the nation’s best ballers from all ages and was not short on highlights.
13U standouts:
Cody Riley #2 CaliStyles: the 6 7” big man came in highly touted and he did not disappoint. He dominated the 13U division and held his own up in the 14U division. The big lefty handled the ball in the open floor and did whatever his team needed. His decision making was so point guard like, he scored easily and created space for teammates to get buckets. Cleaning the glass on both ends was no problem for the big fellow either. This young man brought it every game and was definitely worth watching.
P.J. Washington #25 Texas Celtics Select: this 6 1” big man gave a valiant effort throughout the tournament on both ends of the court. His clutch baskets in the latter part of the games were amazing. His leadership skills were evident and he led his team consistently in all categories. Displayed a very soft touch on jump-shot from 15 feet on in.
D’Rell Roberts #5 Dallas Mustangs: this long and lanky point guard comes from a long line of basketball players in his family, he is anchoring the family tree. His pesky defense is off the chain and you can see it in the opposing player’s face. He ran his team with extreme precise passes and scored at will.
Adam Sieko #5 CaliStyles: this 6 3” recent reclassified banger was large in every facet of the game. I was impressed with his ball handling and body control. His footwork and speed was nice for a big man. Nice shooting touch and knew exactly how to use his size.
Koii Williams #24 Texas Express: young man shot the ball with great consistency. Worked hard on the defensive end and showed great improvement on the ball handling side. His scoring abilities were definitely visible game in and game out. Again, this young man showed that he could flat at shoot the rock on anyone.

The 14U standouts:
Derrick Thornton #11 CaliStyles: the Cali-Kid knows how to get lead a team to the promise land. His athleticism, length, quickness, and toughness willed his team to the victory lane throughout this tournament. This point guard sets his teammates up and still finds ways to get his shots off easily. He got to the charity stripe religiously. His cat-like, stalker, harassing style on defensive upset several opposing point guards that went up against him.
Terrance Ferguson #1 Flower Mound Rebels: by far the best consistent performer in the tournament. This smooth, long and lanky (6 3”), athletic guard put on an all around game that was matched by no one. By far one of the best shooters in the country that also can give you fits on the other end of the court too. Averaged at least 20 points per game and was very solid in every other stat.
Cameron McGriff #32 DFW Defenders: this 6 5” big man was all over the place, whether it was on the boards, blocking shots, finishing in transition and in the paint, he did it with authority and left little doubt about this young man being worth national recognition. Still a little on the raw side in the post but his ceiling is high, this is only his third year playing, but he was one of the most explosive leapers in the tournaments, displaying a few dazzling dunks.
Tyreke Bennett#23 Dallas Mustangs: a recently reclassified stud was everything and bag of chips for his team. What did he not do was the question? He handled the rock and got to the cup as if no one was on the floor in front of him. His slashing and scoring abilities were second to none. Runs the floor and finishes like a man. Was very effective on the boards too.
DeVearl Ramsey#0 CaliStyles: wow, this Masarati was running with some power and acceleration throughout the tournament because he ran by everyone that was supposed to be guarding him. It was even uglier on the defensive end, whoever he was guarding was on the MISSING IN ACTION list. His mid-range pull-up jumper’ game was on crazy automatic.
Gilbert Thomas#45 Houston Hoops: another 6 5” big man that has athleticism and quickness. He was a monster on the boards and had several impressive dunks. He ran the floor very well on both ends, blocking shots easily, rebound and kicked out several passes that led to easy buckets for his teammates.
Devin McCollough#1 Urban DFW Elite: this 6 1” shooting guard was Ray Allen-like throughout the tournament. He can shoot with the best of them and he knew how to create space to get that jumper off. His length gave opponents problems on both ends of the court.
Josh Parrish #1 Texas Elite: one of the best all-around players in the DFW Metroplex and he did nothing to diminish that reptoire. He’s 6 2” and can do it all so naturally. His ability to get to the rim is amazing and he sets up his teammates easily, which is a trait that often gets overlooked . He defended and rebounded against the opposing big men effectively.
Kenny Cooper #5 Team Texas Elite: this athletic guard has been hovering under the DFW Metroplex rad for some time now but this tournament revealed a guard on the rise. His strength, quickness and aggressive style of play was evident throughout. He scored often, he dished the rock to open teammates for easy scores, and he even shut down opposing players all day. Despite playing in the shadow of backcourt mate Deon Barrett, Cooper has shown the ability to be able to lead this team at any time.
Chase Winchester #15 DFW Defenders: young man’s pull-up jumper from anywhere was second to none. Can flat out score from anywhere and has the athleticism to do whatever he wants on any given day.
Mikie McGraw #13 Texas Express: another young man that can shoot from any area code. Pure shooting is what he does, very consistent too. Handled the ball very well, looked very comfortable on both ends of the floor. He scored on everyone that guarded him this weekend.
Jamal Whittlesey poured in a game high 20 points as East Coast Elite defeated DC Assault 41-20 to win the Baby Baller MLK Classic 12U Championship. Preston Bacon scored 14 points for DC Assault in the loss. ECE coach Rob Turner was happy about their MLK Class performance. “We went into the tournament with something to prove, we dubbed it the "STATEMENT TOURNAMENT" during practices. Coaches and players alike were disappointed with our prior performance (Tip Off Classic) and set out to redeem ourselves. With the return of the BIG FELLA Jamal Whittlesey, we fill we are to be mentioned among very best. See yall at the CLASH” said Turner.
MVP: Jamal Whittlesey (East Coast Elite)- It was a huge weekend for the big fella. He was virtually automatic under the basket. He boxed the defenders under the basket and used the glass very well. He dominated the defense each game out. He made a big statement in is return to the Spotlight.

Jaheim Tanklsey scored 20 points and Jordan McKoy added 12 points as Playtime Panthers defeated Team Nelson 48-37 to win the Baby Baller MLK Classic 11U Championship. Trevon Alderman poured in a team high 19 points in the loss. Playtime's coach Mike Richardson felt good to finally grab the banner. "It was a long time coming. We came in second in 3 consecutive Spotlight events. Now we can say we finally got over the hump. I'm so proud of my boys" he finished.
MVP: Jaheim Tanksley (Playtime) Tanskley was remarkable in the finals. The pint size point guard did damage with his floater in the lane. But really hurt Team Nelson hearts by banging home deep jumpers even a trey ball from NBA range. When money time came Tanksley stepped up and cashed in.

Baby Baller MLK Classic Preview
11U Division
ECE-NJABC: This team has to be the odds on favorite while possessing one of the meanest backcourts in the region (Jalen Gaffney, Anthony Hoggard). They tasted the winners circle at the Tip Off Classic and would like to go back for a second helping in AC.
Playtime Panthers: NJABC stood in Playtime’s way of winning the Tip Off Classic but chances are they might meet again. Jaheim Tanksley and Jordan McKoy headline a scrappy squad with a wealth of experience.
Team Nelson: TN is ready to prove they are the team to beat even after losing a few quality pieces. Now the stage is set from them to let everyone know that they still reign supreme.
Team Rebels: TR will be making their 2012 debut with one of the toughest backcourts around. The trio of Justin Money, Zahree Harrison and Darrien Dalcourt will be holding this down in AC.
MABC: The Boston boys will travel a long way are not trying to waste their gas. The Bengals are known to bring tough teams and this one should not be an exception.
NWK: The Brick City will be represented with this group. I haven’t seen them but expect to see a scrappy crew that pushes the rock end to end.

Baby Baller MLK Classic Preview
12U Division
King Street Kings: KSK might be the early favorite while featuring two of the top players in the region in Atiba “Big Guard” Taylor and Luther Muhammad. This might finally be the weekend that KSK grabs the banner.
Playtime Panthers: You can’t leave out Playtime especially sense they are the highest ranking 12U team in this event. Zegary Scott has stepped his game up to become a premiere guard that will take over a game at any time.
DC Assault: The Mitchell twins control the paint while Preston Bacon handles things on the perimeter. They might have the pieces to take the MLK Banner down to the Potomac Valley.
NJ Shore Shots: I will be watching up close and personal how guards Alex Bajohr and Alex Morton handle the pressure in this event. This will be a true test for the slick guards.
Team Final: El Khana Hildago is finally getting a chance to run with his own age group. This Team Final group will be trying to carry on the tradition of those before them.
T Town Ballers: This group was a thorn in the side for this age division last season. Now the expectations will be higher and AC will be their starting point.
East Coast Elite: I’m really going to take a look at this bunch while I’m in Atlantic City. I want to see if they have what it takes to bang against the elite teams.
ECE-NJABC: Yes NJABC has joined the East Coast Elite family and this will be their debut under the new umbrella. They’ve been known to go hard in the past on this age level. Don’t be surprised if they sneak up and snatch the title.
Others To Watch: NWK, Delaware Finest Stars, Alexandria Titans, Force One
Playtime Panthers were the toast of the state in NJ last season. They won the NJ AAU State title and Jordan McKoy was one the main reasons. The wiry guard has the tools to be a big time player in the future. His coach Mike Richardson knows about his skills, “Jordan is the most versatile player in the 11U Division. He played all 5 positions while helping us win 19 out of 21 championships last season” said Mike.
This season Playtime has won 2 out of 3 championships only finishing 2nd at the Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic. “The Real” McCoy is a player that Basketball Spotlight has on our radar so we will be playing close attention to his progress. Can Jordan help Playtime win the Baby Baller MLK Classic crown? We will see in America’s Playground.
Houston Elite 13U took their talents to McAllen Texas near the Border for the Jan Jamm Tournament this past weekend sponsored by Hoopdawgs Basketball Association. The team had great success going 5-0 to win the Championship. Houston Elite also added the services of Easton Upchurch in a game where he exploded for 15 points in his first debut with the team. Houston Elite 13u looks prime and ready for another great run on the summer circuit.
John Paul Sanders was one of the top guards at the Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic. His silky smooth moves and ability to play both guard positions helped Team Final make a final four run. Check out his highlights and stay tune because we have more footage of top players still to come.

They way he glided through the lane and used his body to shield blockers while scoring reminded me of a young Randy Foye. Keep your eye on this kid. I see some bright things in his future. 
Zegary Scott (Playtime Panthers)- Scott proved to be a tough backcourt mate with Lecque. He was in the mix applying the defensive pressure and converting turnovers into easy buckets. He can play both guard spots well but is more suited for running the point. He’s one of the most underrated guards in the region.
Alonzo Huron (NWK)- The pint size guard from “Brick City” has a lot of game. He breezed through the defense while creating space with a low but slick handle. Some defenders might take Huron lightly because of his appearance but he definitely will hurt their feelings with his play.

Jordan "The Real" McKoy (Playtime Panthers)
Mark Bradshaw Guard (Team Nelson)-The lefty looked great in transition and playing alongside Alderman. His 15 points helped TN put away a pesky NWK squad in their pool play match up. He also showed some deep range during this event.
AJ Hoggard Guard (ECE-NJABC)- This weekend Hoggard didn’t look to score as much as in the past. Instead he was more than willing to deliver the rock to teammates with flair. He primarily played the high post and helped out on the glass on both ends of the floor. He really showed he could impact the game without dominating the rock.
Jalen Gaffney Guard (ECE-NJABC)- The addition of Hoggard has allowed Gaffney to step up his scoring. He isn’t bashful when pulling the trigger from deep he tallied 16 in his first game against Team Rebels and 12 in their loss to Team Nelson. He’s definitely playing on a higher confidence level this season.
Fahmir Ali Guard (Team Rebels)- Ali was one of the hottest guards in the building. He has bulldozer style combined with some unique scoring prowess. He gets it done off the dribble or the catch and shoot mode. He has a chance to be a special player coming from Delaware.

MVP: Jamal Whittlesey (East Coast Elite)- It was a huge weekend for the big fella. He was virtually automatic under the basket. He boxed the defenders under the basket and used the glass very well. He dominated the defense each game out. He made a big statement in is return to the Spotlight.
