One On One Feat: Jalen Brooks (Team IZOD)

Jalen Brooks won the 11U Player Of The Year but still wanted his first Spotlight Championship. His wish came true as he helped newly formed Team IZOD win the Tip Off Classic Championship. We got a chance to holler at the southpaw scoring machine and here’s our One On One.

One On One

BS: How did it feel to win your first Basketball Spotlight championship?
JB: I really wanted to win a Spotlight title last year with We Run. We Run had a lot of success, but for some reason we didn't seem to play our best at Spotlight events. Now that I've won my first Spotlight championship with Team Izod, I’m going to try and win a second one.

BS: Who would you consider your toughest competition in the Tip Off Classic?
JB: Some of the teams we played in the Tip Off Classic were good. We have a lot of new pieces and that was our first real tournament of the season. I think we're going to get better as the year goes on.

BS: After winning the 11U Player of the Year do you feel any pressure to perform?
JB: Winning 11U Player of the Year to me was a team honor. I wouldn't have received that award if not for our team playing well and putting me in a position to be successful. I don't feel any added pressure this season. I already put pressure on myself. Plus, my dad always tells me, "Basketball is a game, just go out there and try to have fun."

BS: Do you feel your team has what it takes to win the Basketball Spotlight Grand Finale Championship? Why?
JB: Yes, I do although it won't be easy. I have a lot of confidence in all of my teammates and coaches. If we play unselfish basketball and don't worry about who is getting all of the points or props, we have the talent to compete with anyone, anywhere at any time.

BS: What aspect of your game have you improved on since last season?
JB: I spend a lot of time working on my right hand, my jump shot and my ball handling. Right now I'm known for my scoring, but I want to become a better passer and team leader, too.

BS: How does it feel playing in the backcourt with Markquis Nowell and Mike Watkins?
JB: Mikey is one of my best friends and we have been winning all kinds of championships in football and basketball together for years. He's the leader of our team and makes sure the ball gets where it needs to be. The addition of Markquis has been great for us. Everybody knows he gets buckets, but he also plays hard on D, passes well and is cool to be around. When he's on and I'm on, we're tough to stop.

BS: Do you think you guys can win the national championship? Why?
JB: That would be a dream come true for me. I've been on teams that have won MITs and states and other big tournaments, but that would be hot if we could make it to the final four at Nationals like Riverside did last year. I'd be happy with that.

BS: Give me one word to describe Basketball Spotlight.
JB: Competitive.
