Diary Of A Baller: Jordan Forehand Entry #4

Hello, Basketball World:

It's your boy Jordan. I got back from Puerto Rico on Thursday. I was out there with my mom, grand mom and my friend, Darren. I still had to study while we were out there, but I did get some time to work on some basketball drills and shoot around. It was really hot out there!

When we got back on Thursday, I had practice with my Jersey Shore Shots team, coached by Adam Turner of Hoop Group. A lot of running, a lot of drills on defense...the usual. On Friday, I went out to the shooting academy in Edison and worked on the jumper. I wish I had one of those machines at my house. I would never get off of it!

This weekend, I had a tournament out at Fairleigh Dickinson with Sports University. It was only our second tournament, but unlike last week when we lost in the championship, this week we won. We beat the Westchester Hawks Select team in the championship. It was a very competitive game. Coaches Ed Molloy and Brian Coleman really prepared us well. Manager Ed Bright gave us all a very motivational speech as we all prepared to head home. The players are all getting to know each other better which is going to make us very hard to beat as the season goes on.

All in all, it was a good weekend. My collage team, Villanova, is still playing in the NCAA tournament. Go Wildcats! I have to go now and put in some practice time with my trumpet. I have a school concert coming up in a few weeks.

Atlantic City Showcase 13U Championship Recap: Team Nelson Gets It Done!

Team Nelson Continues It's Winning Ways

Christian Irons scored 13 points including 3 treys while Dion Linton added 9 markers as Team Nelson defeated Team NJABC 50-39 to win the Atlantic City Showcase 13 and Under Championship. Wade Baldwin nailed 4 treys and finished with 15 points in the loss.

Spotlight Players

Kyle Coleman Guard (Team Nelson)- Coleman has an awkward release on his jump shot but it’s very effective. He did damage driving to the cup from the wing and stretching for finishes at the cup. He’s strong enough to absorb contact and still finish off the play.

Christian Irons Guard (Team Nelson)- Iron’s is a spot up shooter that can nail the long ball even with hands in his face. He benefits greatly from Team Nelson’s drive and kick style and their low post players passing back out to the perimeter.

Dion Linton Forward (Team Nelson)- Linton had a huge day beginning in the semifinals when he went to work against a tough Team Final crew. He has good touch and size around the basket while also drawing a lot of fouls on the opposition.

Terrell Sturdivant Forward (Team Nelson)- Inside Sturdivant is a headache for opponents. His wingspan gives him a chance to get a hand in on just about every play. He also extends to get rebounds and score near the hoop. Before he reaches high school he would need to pack on pounds to play in the post.

Nazier Chew Guard (Team Nelson)- Chew gives TN the point guard they needed. His jump shot wasn’t falling this weekend so he made up for it by dropping his floater, attacking the rim and setting up teammates. He also dug in on the defensive end.

Isiah Powell Guard (Team NJ ABC)- There wasn’t a hotter shooter this weekend in this age division. I saw Powell 3 times and he was burning the net in each outing. He tickled the twine over a dozen times from deep and actually attacked the basket more than usual. He had a great showing in AC.

Kaison Randolph Forward (Team NJ ABC)- Randolph also put in heavy work. His ball handling allows him to have most post defenders at his mercy. Once he gets a defender on his hip it curtains. I also like how he uses his left hand to finish and outstretch shot blockers. He’s becoming a top notch performer.

Wade Baldwin Guard (Team NJ ABC)- Baldwin is another good shooter with this bunch. During the finals he caught fire from behind the arc when Team NJ made their comeback. Wade seemed to be gaining confidence after each shot. He can really stroke it.

Rhys Dring Forward (Team NJ ABC)- Dring is a rugged rebounder that hits the boards and plays defense. He also contributed on the offensive end in the finals during Team NJ’s comeback attempt. He’s an excellent role player for this team.

Shaquan Worthy Guard (Team NJ ABC)- Worthy was in charge of setting up these shooters and did a good job. His speed draws attention from the defense which opens things up for his teammates. The point is also a pest on defense.

Atlantic City Showcase 11U Championship Recap: Team Battle Captures Crown

Team Battle Conquers Atlantic City Showcase

Jamir Harris and Darius Gillon scored 10 points apiece as Team Battle defeated 38-31 to win the Atlantic City Showcase Championship. Sa’eed Nelson scored 7 points for F.A.C.E.S. in the loss.

Spotlight Player

Darius Gillon Forward (Team Battle)- This kid continues to improve every time I see him. His footwork has gotten better and he now has the touch to score inside. On defense he clogs up the middle while also altering shots and grabbing rebounds. I like his work ethic.

Jamir Harris Forward (Team Battle)- Harris slashed his way to the basket for a couple of buckets and also converted after grabbing the rock from the glass on offensive rebounds. On defense his length seems to create all kinds of problems for the opposition.

Khalif Crawford Guard (Team Battle)- Crawford’s ball handling helped Team Battle fight off F.A.C.E.S. pressure. He has nice size for a guard on this level. Khalif has some good bounce to his game and can create off the dribble. On defense he moves his feet well and hustles hard every play.

Tyus Battle Guard (Team Battle)- Battle went to work against New Heights and then against DC Assault in the semifinals. The lanky used his size and handle to get to the cup and score with ease. As the tourney wore on he picked up his play.

Sa’eed Nelson Guard (F.A.C.E.S.)- Nelson was playing in front of his hometown and put on a show this weekend. His defensive prowess stands as he harassed the CT 300 guards in the semifinals. When he wasn’t ripping ball handlers he was out on the break finishing off lay up’s or hitting pull up jumpers.

RJ Cole Guard (F.A.C.E.S.)-Cole is becoming a pass first point guard. With Nelson picking up some of the scoring load the southpaw now concentrates on defense and feeding teammates. He too played good defense against CT 300. Wow what a backcourt!

Ray Montilous Forward (F.A.C.E.S.)- Montilous came up big for F.A.C.E.S. in the quarters and semifinals. He really a guard playing on the post thus he is able to dribble around defenders and kiss the rock off the glass. If you make the mistake of fouling him you will pay for because he’s consistent from the charity stripe.

Atlantic City Showcase 12U Championship Recap: Team Final Too Much

Team Final Wins Title

Ray Lawry scored 19 points including 2 treys and Malik Ellison added 11 markers Team Final defeated F.A.C.E.S. 51-33 to win the Atlantic City Showcase 12 and Under Championship. Trey Lowe was on fire knocking down 4 treys and finishing with 17 points.

Spotlight Players

Ray Lawry Guard (Team Final)- Lawry was huge in the final. He got out on the break and converted some easy buckets. He also gave us a glimpse of his outside shot knocking down treys that stop a couple of F.A.C.E.S. runs. Lawry is also a ball hawk on defense while pressuring guards into several turnovers.

Malik Ellison Guard (Team Final)- Ellison might be the most polished 6th Grader in the region. His poise and Basketball IQ had one high school coach saying he could run the point for him right now. Malik also showed tremendous range over the weekend knocking down deep treys from NBA range.

Trevaughn Wilkerson Forward (Team Final)- Wilkerson is just the icing on the cake for Team Final. He truly dominates the paint on both ends of the floor. This kid has really improved since I first saw him last year. I like how he catches the ball and keeps it high while turning to score. Defensively, shooting over him is like shooting over the Green Monster.

Lamar Kimble Guard (Team Final)- Kimble’s play in the semifinals helped Team Final get past a stubborn The City. This guard just has so many moves in his game. His ball handling allows him to get anywhere on the floor and score at will. He was an excellent pick up for this squad.

Trey Lowe Guard (F.A.C.E.S.)- Lowe helped keep things close in the beginning for FA.C.E.S. The Mercer County native stroked the rock from the perimeter with great measure. This was a pressure packed atmosphere and he stood tall for most of the afternoon.

Mike Jolaoso Guard (F.A.C.E.S.)- Jolaoso also showed me some heart in the finals. He played excellent defense and really pushed the rock up the floor while making plays for his squad. He has really helped this team with his backcourt play and they are making huge strides.

Brian Brown Guard (F.A.C.E.S.)- F.A.C.E.S. made it to the finals after a tough semifinal win against Team Takeover and Brown was one of the main catalyst. He was assigned to the middle of the press break and when he got the rock he attacked the hole and made them pay for trapping.

Jack Laffy Forward (F.A.C.E.S.)- Laffy gave another huge effort this weekend and was very instrumental in their victory over Team Takeover. He’s so intense on both ends of the floor. He also was a key addition for this North Jersey group and playing with them has helped him a lot.

Atlantic City Showcase 14U Championship Recap: Peacemakers Take Title

Peacemakers Win Crown

Shafeek Taylor scored 15 and Semaj Reed added 14 markers and a ton of rebounds as the Peacemakers defeated Team Nelson 57-49 to win the Atlantic City Showcase 14 and Under Championship. Jaquan Johnson scored 14 points for Team Nelson in the loss.

Spotlight Players

Shafeek Taylor Guard (Peacemakers)- Taylor was on his game in the finals. He drained a couple of treys and also bounced his body off of defenders while scoring on his way to the cup. I loved his aggressiveness and ability to score against such a tough defensive squad. He played big all day today.

Semaj Reed Forward (Peacemakers)- Reed is a new face for this squad and was a huge factor in this game. His down low presence was is something to be accountable for. He was a monster on the boards and an offensive force once he got his hands on the rock in the post. He will be a name to know this spring and summer.

John Davis Forward (Peacemakers)- Wow I remembering featuring Davis on the site a while ago after watching him play at Adidas Jr. Phenom but now his game has progressed. First of all the youngster has trimmed up his frame and made himself into a legit forward prospect. He has a miniature Mike Beasley type game going on but he will have to extend his range and work on his ball handling.

Zafir Copeland Guard (Peacemakers)- Copeland held off Team Nelson’s pressure defense long enough to get the win. The stocky guard had enough power and speed to make things happen. He penetrated and spoon fed his big men for easy buckets.

Juquan Johnson Guard (Team Nelson)- Johnson is more athletic than I thought. Once he gets into the lane he knows how to twist his body around shot blockers and still score buckets. He’s also very tough to stay in front of because of his array of dribbling moves.

Jakari Rowe Guard (Team Nelson)- Rowe isn’t a flashy offensive player but he’s capable of getting the job done. He also makes a living grinding on defense and sticking his nose inside to get a couple of boards with the trees inside. He’s a glue player that every team needs.

Conrad Chambers Guard (Team Nelson)- Chambers was outstanding in their quarterfinal game vs. Cutino Mobley. This youngster was very quick with the ball and really excels in transition. On the break he loves receiving the rock and exploding to the cup.

Rondae Jefferson Forward (Team Nelson)- The long lefty showed some of his moves along the baseline before getting into foul trouble. His quickness gives most post players problems because they can’t guard him. I’m starting see his upside coming out.

Basketball Spotlight Memorial Day Classic Is Here!

The Basketball Spotlight Memorial Day Classic is here. The MDC is Basketball Spotlight’s premiere event and our last one for the AAU season. This event will be held in Neptune, NJ and feature the top teams in the region. Registration has begun and we will be taking teams on a first come first play basis. When the event is filled we will not be taking anymore teams. Please register quickly to confirm a spot. Atlantic City Showcase 12 and Under Preview

Team Final Is Ready For Atlantic City

The 12 and Under Division at the Atlantic City Showcase is fire. He has some big time names and some new teams making their Spotlight debut. Here’s a look at who’s coming down for this event.

12 and Under Division Preview

Team Final: Formerly Harvest Knights this squad is surely one of the favorites in Atlantic City. The have superb guard play combined with super inside presence. They will be a tough out for any opponent they face.

Team Takeover: The MIT Champs are here to challenge Team Final for the region’s number 1 spot. I have seen them in big games and they seem up for the challenge. They have good guard and aggressive forwards. Keep an eye out for T&T.

The City: The newcomers have made strong waves in this short season. They won the MLK and finished runner up at both the Clash For The Cup and Show Me Invitational. The AC Showcase will be their biggest test thus far.

F.A.C.E.S.: These boys are always a few points short from bringing home the gold. They are good defensively and their improved guard play makes every game close. They might pull the slots in AC and take the title back to Newark.

Linden Ballers: Every event needs some brawlers and Linden fits the bill. There the team nobody likes to face because even if you beat them they take a lot out of steam out of your squad. Let’s see if they can clip a few teams in AC.

Albany Dream Team: I saw them at the MIT and I had to have them at this event. This squad brings enough energy to be party crashers for this event. Their scrappy play might help them get over the top.

Team MVP: The Trenton Boys will in the up echelon last season and are ready to return. The Showcase will definitely put them to the test. Expect a big time effort from the Capital City Crew.

Mid Jersey Heat: Sleep on the Heat and you might catch a L. That’s right these boys are improved from a year ago and ready for wreck. This will be an interesting test for them.

NJ Shore Shots: Word is the team from Hoop Group Headquarters is ready for the Primetime. They have some new faces including some big time guards. This is there introduction to the Spotlight.

Can Team Battle Conquer Atlantic City?

The 11 and Under Division at the Atlantic City Showcase will feature the absolute best teams in the region. Here’s a breakdown of who will be in the building and what too expect.

11 and Under Preview

Team Battle: This will be the true test for the Clash For The Cup Champs. The field is very deep and they have a huge target on their backs. Will the #1 team in the region come of this with the crown? We will see in AC?

F.A.C.E.S.: The squad from Newark seems to have put it together. They were runner up at the Maryland Bulls tourney after knocking off DC Assault in the semifinals. They are hungry and ready to cross the bridge into championship land.

DC Assault: This squad enters their first Spotlight event carrying a huge rep. Also they are looking for revenge after coming up short at the Maryland Bulls tourney. Will they make an impressive showing in the Garden State? We shall see.

Team Takeover: Reports say this squad is the best from the PV area. I haven’t had a chance to check them out yet so I’m also anxious to see their arsenal. This will be a true place to test their skills.

KBR Raptors: KBR has shaking off their less than stellar performance at the Grand Finale and are predicting a deep run in Atlantic City. They are a very dangerous squad with something to prove.

New Heights: New Heights decided to make the trip down the Garden State Parkway and want to be the party crashers. They feel that they should be ranked higher in the region and this is their chance to show it.

CT 300: The New Haven Boys and Girls Club claim to have the top program in Connecticut. They will get a chance to prove that in Atlantic City. The road to the crown is very bumpy.

Staten Island Stingrays: This squad has some of the players who were with Team Artest so I know they go hard. The question is will a move to this new program help them get over the top in AC?

Important Announcement

Please Check the schedule for updates. I had to make a few changes in the 14U bracket concerning time slots. Please make sure you constantly check the site for changes. All 13U Games that were scheduled to play at Uptown Complex have been moved to NY Ave. School located on 411 North New York Ave Atlantic City NJ 08401.

Atlantic City Showcase Rules and Regulations

Refunds: There will be no refunds for any team pulling out of this event.

Forfeits: Forfeits will be enforced to keep the games on time. Any teams that purposely forfeits because of non pool advancement will not be allowed to enter any other Basketball Spotlight Events.

Playing Times: All Games Use Stop Clocks

10U Division- 2 (12 Minutes Halves)
11U Division- 2 (13 Minute Halves)
12U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)
13U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)
14U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)

Fouls:
Foul Out- 5 Fouls
1-1 Bonus- 10 Fouls
Double Bonus- 13 Fouls

Game Time and Grace Period:
Each Team is responsible of being at the gym at least 15 minutes before their scheduled game. There will be no grace period allowed for any games. There will only be a 5 minute warm up time before the game and 2 minutes at halftime.

Time Outs:
There will two full timeouts a half (4 per game) for each team. No carry over and no 30 seconds time outs.

Uniforms: Each Team must have two sets of uniforms (light and dark).

Mercy Rule:
If a team is ahead by 20 points or more with 2 minutes remaining in the contest the game will be called at that point. The team ahead by 20 will be awarded the victory.

Player Ejections:
Any player ejected from a game will be suspended the next game. Any player involved in or ejected for fighting will be suspended the remainder of the tournament.

Birth Certificates:
All teams must have birth certificates for each player on their roster in case of a challenge. Each team will be allowed 3 grade exceptions. Grade Exceptions must have paperwork.

Challenges: Must be made before the game and will cost the challenging team $60.

Daily Admissions: All Facility Matters Will Be Handled By Atlantic City High School including entry fee and seating.

Tie Breaker Criteria (In Order):
1. Won-Loss Record
2. Head to Head Competition
3. Point System (Margin Of Victory)- Any team winning by more than 15 points will only be rewarded 15 points for the victory. So if you win by 20 points you still will be rewarded only 15 points.
4. Least Amount of Points allowed in Pool Play
5. Coin Flip

Diary Of A Baller: Jordan Forehand Entry #3

Hello World,

This is your boy, Jordan and I want to update you on my week. I am on school break from Rutgers Prep and had many assignments to cover. I had to complete a book called “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy” and read three chapters in science. Gotta hit the books!

As far as basketball is concerned, I had a pretty busy weekend. My 14U and 15U teams were in the same tournament sponsored by Hoop Group and played at Drew University. I played in a total of 8 games in two days!

This week, I joined a 15U team called Sports University, whose President is Ed Bright and is coached by Ed Molloy and Brian Coleman, the JV Coaches from St. Anthony's. The coaches are great teachers and the players come from a variety of schools. We made it to the championship, but lost in the last few seconds 43-41. It was tight all the way. I love playing in those kind of games.

I also worked out this week with my 14U Shore Shots team, coached by Adam Turner. We played hard, but lost in the semifinals. A couple of guys thought they could talk me out of my game. They will eventually realize that that doesn’t work. It just makes me focus more on the goal…winning.

All in all, the tournament was run very well and the competition was good. I wish we could have walked away with the chip in both. We will next time.

As usual, I also did my agility and fitness training and also worked on my jump shot. I try to take a minimum of 500 shots when I am working on my jump shot. My father always tells me, with a jump shot, you can play forever.

I am leaving for Puerto Rico tonight and originally, I was supposed to go for two weeks, but my vacation was shortened to four days since I made a commitment to play basketball this weekend. Don’t worry…I have my ball with me!

Well, my plane is leaving soon. Study Hard and Play Harder!

Show Me Invitational Recap: Gauchos Repeat As Champs

Gauchos Win Show Me Crown

Desure Blue, Malik Naitland and Davonte Green all scored 10 points apiece as the Gauchos knocked off The City 52-50 to win the Show Me Invitational 12 and Under Title. Josh Wallace finished with 20 markers foe The City in the loss.

Spotlight Players

Desure Blue Guard (Gauchos)- Blue took home MVP honors after making some clutch shots down the stretch. The City guard banged home a big trey to put them up by 3 but Blue came down and knocked home a trey of his own to quiet the rally. The pint size guard also stepped to the free throw line and sunk a few clutch freebies. He showed tremendous heart.

Davonte Green Guard (Gauchos)- Green also made a statement for MVP in my eyes. His all around play is very similar to his older brother that plays for North Carolina. He does everything, handles the rock, rebounds effectively, scores off the dribble, has a nice outside stroke, defends his position and passes the rock like a point. He will be one to watch in the coming years.

Malik Naitland Guard (Gauchos)- When things got tight the Gauchos needed a strong guard to handle the pressure and Naitland answered the bell. The lefty used his ball handling and strength to knife through The City’s press and make plays. His ball pressure on the defensive end was also a problem.

Mustafa Jones Forward (Gauchos)- This forward is still in development stages in terms of strength and footwork but his presence was still felt. Defensively he got his hands on a few balls and used his length to snatch down a few rebounds. I also like his touch near the basket.

Eric Pachall Guard (The City)- This kid is very versatile, on one play he might come down a bang a trey then on the next play he will get a put back on the blocks. His ability to put the rock on the floor and create makes him a constant match up problem for opponents.

Wolfgang Novogratz Guard (The City)- Wolfie is truly a ball player. The combo guard is always focused on the game and wants the rock in clutch situations. On Sunday he hit some big shots throughout the day, he does lean in a little too much on his jumper but right now it’s very effective.

Mike Williams Guard (The City)- Williams will not be denied from getting to the rack. He finds a way to squeezed through the smallest holes in the defense and makes something happen. I also like how he battles down for rebounds even though he’s a guard.

Josh Wallace Forward (The City)- Wallace is a bona fide scorer and he showed it in the finals. The stocky forward used his smooth baseline and wide frame to get his shots off against the Gauchos trees. He also spent some time on the charity stripe after initiating contact.

Jack Laffy Forward (F.A.C.E.S.)- Laffy put forth a great effort after while helping his team make a comeback during the semifinals. His rugged play inside and willingness to get rebounds was the difference. He also lived at the charity stripe and was very efficient.

Samir Taylor Guard (F.A.C.E.S.)- Taylor also was involved in his team’s comeback effort. The wiry guard was a pest on defense and also got his offense going in the second half. He gave the squad great energy.

Juwan Dolbrice Guard (Linden Ballers)- I like Dolbrice’s game. He can hit the outside and take you off the dribble to the rack. He has good length especially for a wing player and also makes it his business to play defense. He plays the true Linden style.

James Corbett Guard (Linden Ballers)- Corbett is another wiry guard for Linden but he’s more of a slasher. He cuts through the lane and finishes around the basket well. Defensively he will rebound as well as stick his hand in the passing lane for deflections.
