Younger Bagley Making A Name For Himself!

 

While older brother Marvin is receiving national attention as an 8th Grader, Marcus a 6th Grader from Phoenix, AZ is quietly coming on strong and letting his game do the talking. Last season he split time with WACG All Stars and Team Bibby. Many have described Marcus as best shooter in the country for the Class of 2020 and he did impress us when we watched him in Nashville. Basketball Spotlight will another look at Marcus during the season and we will keep you guys posted.

Diary Of A Baller: Myles Dread (Burtonsville, MD) Entry #4

I went to St. John’s high school this weekend. They have amazing facilities and new equipment all around the school. I played in pickup games with the team. Their team came second in the WCAC, the best high school basketball conference in the country, last year. I played hard and competed pretty well. After we ran a couple of games, one of the coaches took us on a tour of the school. It was a fun tour. One of the things I enjoyed about the tour was that the school gave all of the students I-Pads. 

Every I-Pad was connected to the school’s wifi so they can use them for textbooks, papers, and homework. Then after the tour we went to their homecoming football game. They have a good football team this year. The game was exciting in the first half, but I had to leave early. When I left St. John’s was losing 14-6. I am happy that I’m playing with Team Takeover now. This year we get travel across the country playing in different Nike events. Our first tournament is next weekend in New Jersey. I’m looking forward to playing against kids like Luther Muhammad, Atiba Taylor, and Nazi Reid. These are some of the best kids in the country and I like playing against them. We have had some battles between us in the past couple of years. I look forward to many more in the future. This week in practice Coach Keith was getting us ready for the tournament. We spent time learning a new offense. He really stresses the importance of defense. He challenges us to become better defensive players every day. Also he just wants us to play hard! This week I have been working on my wind and my form on my jumper. 

My mom was gone all week so that means I have to do more around the house. So on Sunday I was happy to see her again. When she got home we made a special dinner for her. We made crab legs and shrimp for dinner. I ate mostly crab legs because those are my favorites! After dinner we sat around the house and watched football. Next week I will share stories from our first tournament of the year.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: The Moore The Merrier!

Wendell Moore (Carolina Preps)

Wendell Moore caught our eyes in July when his dominant play help led the Carolina Preps to the AAU 6th Grade National Championship. His all around skills and motor are very rare for a player at such a young age. He not only finished as the #1 Player at the AAU Nationals but also topped our list as the #1 player overall in the country. 

Moore continued his hot play and made our rankings look nice with a MVP performance at the recent NYBL Top 20 All Star Game. During the game he showed his well rounded style by finishing with 10 and 8 boards. It’s still too early to predict if Wendell can run the table as the #1 player all the way through high school but he’s off to a good start.

Williams Heads To Super Skillcase With A Stock On The Rise

Terrence "Big Smoove" Williams

The Super Skillcase is loading up with players looking to improve their game and name. One player that will be headed to Atlantic City is Terrence “Big Smoove” Williams of Clinton, MD. Williams has been on a tear since we rated him #31 on our Class of 2019 Top 70 list. While some players rest on their laurels Terrence used the ranking spot as motivation. His inspired play earned him MVP honors at the NYBL Top 40 All Star Game. Now he will try to keep that momentum while battling the best at the Super Skillcase. 

His coach from ETU Select Drew Brelsford has seen Terrence develop this season. “This past season I think Terrence started to understand how to dominate the paint on both ends of the floor. He finishes strong in the paint either from the low block or attacking the rim from the high post. On the defensive end he’s a good rebounder while also possessing the ability to block or alter shots” he finished. 

After a great showing in Ohio, a good weekend in AC would only give Williams a chance to improve his stock when our spring rankings are released. Stay tuned as we bring you more top prospects headed to the Super Skillcase.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: The Chase Debate!

Chase Adams (Chicago, IL)

Chase Adams has been a national name on the AAU circuit for years. This past summer he took his game to the camp tour and showed good results. Hoop Scoop Online rated Adams not only the #1 player on the Class of 2018 but also the Best Play Maker of the Summer over highly touted seniors Tyus Jones and Kentucky bound Tyler Ulis. Hoops Report also released their rankings and has the point guard #5 in the country. Now this youngster has huge expectations to meet this season. 

Basketball Spotlight currently has Adams #58 on our list but maybe that will change after we get a chance to check him out again. Does the other sites have Adams too high or does Basketball Spotlight have him too low? I guess we will find out soon.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: The "Green" Light

Mike Green (Myrtle Beach, SC)

When the NYBL Top 40 All Star game concluded Mike Green had once again made his mark. The southpaw finished with 16 points including 3 treys in a losing effort. His play earned him MVP honors for the West Team. Green also was a lethal threat for the reigning 6th Grade National Champions Carolina Preps. He currently checks in at #24 on our Class of 2019 Top 50 list. He has a stroke similar to former NY Legend and NBA Hall of Famer Chris Mullin. 

Keyford Langley has coached Green for years and had the privilege of watching him develop. “It’s obvious that I love the way he stretches the defense. What I love most about him is that he’s a great teammate. He cheers and believes in all his teammates. He’s very vocal on the floor and has reinvented himself every year. He’s added different elements which helped him and his teammates get better” said Langley.

Jordan Simmons Quick Hitter (Chicago, Ill)

 

Jordan Simmons is a point guard from Chicago who has been making waves at Buckeye Prep events for the past few years. The lead guard from the Windy City has great court vision and gets into the paint at ease. Simmons is currently ranked #51 in the country by Basketball Spotlight with a great chance to move up when our spring rankings are released.

Harge Heading To Super Skillcase With A Purpose!

One of the most exciting 8th Grade guards in the country Damon Harge is headed to the Super Skillcase in Atlantic City, NJ. Harge is known around the country for his slick ball handling, scoring prowess and play making ability. Damon has electrified crowds and showed dominance at many camps and tournaments around the country. This will be his Basketball Spotlight debut. 

Though he’s ranked #31 on our Top 70 National Player Ranking list his coach James Black feels he’s the #1 point guard in the country and at least a Top 5 overall prospect. “He’s definitely the #1 point guard in the country and it’s not even close. I coached a lot of great guards and he’s going to go down as one of the best. He makes the right plays, knows how to make others better, plays good defense while also being able to hit the mid range and deep jumper. He has the total package” said Black. 

Basketball Spotlight will get the opportunity to see if Harge is indeed is the best floor general in the country and what’s a better place than the Super Skillcase in America’s Playground.

NYBL Top 20 All Star Game Recap

Ed Sanchez (New Heights) & Wendell Moore (Carolina Preps)

The West squad won the game that was close the whole way 50-48 and Ed Sanchez took home the MVP honors for the victors with 11 points. Sanchez plays with New Heights and might have the best post moves in the 2019 class. He is very patient when he catches the ball and has a soft touch around the basket. Wendell Moore who plays with Carolina Preps took home MVP honors for the losing East squad. He had 10 points and 8 rebounds and showed why he is considered the #1 player in the country. Moore rebounds at a very high level and finishes strong. He can handle the ball like a guard and makes great decisions.

NYBL Top 40 All Star Game Recap

Terrence Williams (ETU Select)

The Top 40 game showed more of the talent that the NYBL had to offer as 17 of the players are ranked in the Top 100. This game wasn’t as close as the East team one 66-43. Terrance Williams who plays with ETU Select took home MVP honors for the winning team with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Williams knows how to finish through contact against longer players and he rebounds at an elite level. Mike Green who runs with the National Champion Carolina Preps took home MVP for the losing team tallying 16 points which included 3 trey balls. Mike might have the sweetest stroke in the country in his class.

NYBL Finishes Season In Spectacular Fashion!

The inaugural NYBL (National Youth Basketball League) season culminated in grand fashion this past Saturday at Central Crossing High School in Columbus, OH with the Top 20 and Top 40 All Star games. The NYBL has been one of the major talks of middle school basketball this year since after the first session in Washington DC back in March and throughout the next two sessions in North Augusta, SC and Columbus, OH. The All Star games were a great ending to the competitive league that piloted 24 teams in the 2019 class playing 188 games over the 3 sessions and saw All Ohio Red bring home the first ever championship. Then 7 of the top 8 finishers at the 6th Grade AAU Nationals in Hampton played in the NYBL which showed the strength and competitiveness of the league. The All Star games were run in conjunction with the Buckeye Prep Elite Showcase put on by Buckeye Prep Report and the top talent in the class of 2019 was on full display. All 20 players that played in the Top 20 game are Top 100 ranked players including the consensus #1 ranked player in the class Wendell Moore. 

On The Horizon! 

Look out for the much anticipated press release coming out in early October with the NYBL sites, dates, and locations for the upcoming 2014 second season of the NYBL. The League is expanding to have 4 sessions that are tentatively set for Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA, Louisville, KY and Columbus, OH. In 2015 the League is scheduled to add its 5th and final site. Also new for 2015, the NYBL will expand to have the classes of 2019 (7th Graders), 2020 (6th Graders), and 2021 (5th Graders). Also look out for the new NYBL website and the National Top 100 rankings for the Class of 2019 presented by the NYBL to be released both at the beginning of October.

Basketball Spotlight has yet to see Miller get busy in person but from the highlights he seems to be a heady point guard with the flair for the dramatic at times. Basketball Spotlight will make it our business to take a look at this youngster soon.

Basketball Spotlight will end our coverage of the National Player Rankings by dropping our Class of 2017 list. This list is by far the toughest we ever had to assemble. The list will drop on Monday and we will like to wish all the guys the best of luck as they journey into their high school careers. It’s been great watching these youngsters perform the last few years. Also remember our Class of 2018 and 2019 player rankings will be updated in the spring.

Jordan Mitchell the 6’1 7th Grade wing guard impressed us with his play at the AAU Nationals this past July. He’s perimeter oriented and had good ball handling skills. He’s currently ranked #10 in the country on our site. According to reports he played extremely well this past weekend at the NYBL All Star Game. Basketball Spotlight Exclusive: One On One Feat. Billy Council Of "Little Ballers"

Saturday night Basketball Spotlight attended the premier of Little Ballers which was hosted by the Urban World Film Festival. The film focused on a 5th Grade AAU team’s quest to win an AAU National title. The film also looked into the lives of four of the players and their dedicated coach. Basketball Spotlight was extremely impressed with the film and really believes the project is headed to big time success. One of the stars of the film was Coach Billy Council and we decided to reach out to Billy to get his thoughts after watching the film on the big screen.

Diary Of A Baller: Myles Dread (Burtonsville, MD) Entry #3

Dear Basketball World, 

This week was exciting! I began visiting high schools for next year. My first visit was at Gonzaga High school. The day started off with a 30 minute Metro train ride and a 5 minute walk to school. There were all different types of people on the Metro. I saw business people, homeless people, and other students. This made me think of the hard work I have to do to make sure I can be successful. I shadowed with Chris Lykes, a freshman basketball player at Gonzaga. He was a great guide. I followed him to all his classes. I especially liked the Algebra class. I got a chance to take a quiz during class and got an A. Chris introduced me to his friends and made me feel welcome. I enjoyed my time there and the highlight was meeting Coach Turner. 

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Marquise Walker (Chi-Town's Finest)

Chicago is known for their hardcore guards and players making their name on the blacktop. Now the top 7th Grader in the state Marquise Walker will be looking to carry on the legacy. Walker spent last season mostly playing up in grade for George Hill All Stars but we did get a glimpse of him at the 6th Grade Nationals. His played earned him the #16 spot on our Class of 2019 rankings. 

His father and developer Chikosi Walker is impressed with his son’s package. “I love his court vision and creativity. Most guards can only pad their assist totals in open court but Marquise can get ten assist against a 2-3 zone” said Chikosi. Though his father likes what he sees in Marquise he does understand there’s room for improvement. “I think Marquise has to become more consistent in terms playing at a high level from start to finish. He also needs to stay focused regardless of the competition level and score of the game” he continued. 

Marquise had lofty expectations since he was labeled a child prodigy at a very young age and his father feels he can still reach the ultimate goal. “Potentially I think he can be as good as he wants to be. Marquise has to stay focused on his ultimate goal of the NBA which will require him to work hard as possible. This goal will also require some luck. It’s too early to see where he stacks up against past Chicago guards but God willing through hard work he could be thought of as one of the best when it’s all said and done” he finished.
