AGame Super Shootout 7th Grade Championship Recap: Team IZOD Shows Supremacy!

 

Supreme Team Wins AGame Super Shootout

Jahvon Quinerly scored 16 points as Team IZOD defeated New Rens 47-40 to win the AGame Super Shootout 7th Grade Championship. Walter Tally led the charge for New Rens in the loss. 

Top Performers 

Jahvon Quinerly Guard (Team IZOD)- When the excitement of the beginning of the game ended Quinerly began to take over. New Rens didn’t have a guard to could keep him out the lane and his drives usually finished with a pull up or floater. His scoring is a key component to Team IZOD’’s success and he’s very much a POY candidate. 

Luther Muhammad Guard (Team IZOD)- The reigning POY showed a different aspect of his game. He played remarkable defense on high scoring guard Markquis Nowell by making it hard for Nowell to get a clean look. He moved his feet well and used his strength to fight through picks. I was impressed how he stepped up to the challenge of guarding a smaller and possible quicker guard. 

Nazreon Reid Forward (Team IZOD)- His long term potential is something that’s scary but Reid impacts the game so much right now. His 6’7 frame allows the IZOD perimeters defenders to gamble and play the passing lanes more aggressively. On the offensive end his game is still evolving and he looks comfortable on the perimeter. I also liked the way he fought for position on the post. After this weekend I’m comfortable saying that Reid is the best grammar school prospect in the region including current 8th Graders. 

Atiba Taylor Guard (Team IZOD)- Taylor’s big game experience and poise helped Team IZOD pull out the victory. His show running ability allowed Quinerly to run off picks and attack from isolation situations. Now as he continues his transition into the point guard position he must work on managing the game down the stretch. 

Walter Tally Forward (New Rens)- The big fella battled Reid hard on the blocks. Defensively, he's a load and clogs the middle while snatching rebounds. On the other end he has decent hands but needs some work on his post moves and footwork. I like his upside and the effort be brings on the floor.

Nayshon Hamlet Forward (New Rens)- Hamlet’s early play helped New Rens take an early lead. His versatility combined with strength allowed him to get into the lane and inside the frames of the IZOD lanky forwards. Now he should concentrate on working on his jump shot and decision making off the dribble. 

Jalen Carey Guard (New Rens)- Carey might be one of the most underrated players in the region. He has good court awareness and scoring ability. In transition he’s a lot to handle because he can change directions quickly. His best days of basketball are still ahead of him. 

Markquis Nowell Guard (New Rens)- It was Nowell’s first game against his former squad. In terms of scoring their length gave him a few problems but he did show the ability to drive, draw and dish to Tally. This aspect is very important to any player with point guard size.

The Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week goes to Jahvon Quinerly of Team IZOD 7th Grade. Quinerly scored 16 points to help Team IZOD defeat New Rens 47-40 to win the AGame Super Shootout 7th Grade Championship. Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Jahvon and remember to keep working hard. The basketball road is very long.

Spotlight Alum: Giles Just Too Much

When I first laid eyes on Harry Giles as a 6th Grader (Team Felton) at the DC Assault Classic I knew he was someone special. In the 8th Grade he received “The Stamp” from Basketball Spotlight. Right now he’s considered by many as the best player in the Class of 2016 (including us). But since Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker are on their way to college next fall don’t be surprised is his name is not thrown into the best high school prospect regardless of class talk by spring 2014. Remember where you heard it first.

Nate and Former Teammates

Hello basketball world, my week was awesome and here’s how everything went. 

Monday was a short day for me. School was normal but we had a playoff game for my school team. We are the #1 seed so we played against the 8th seed and blew them out. I had a good game and afterwards I went home to get some dinner and sleep.

Metro Sixers returned to the Spotlight circuit this year and made some noise in the process. They also recently won the Maryland Invitational and a lot of their success is due to the play of wing guard Brandon Slater. Slater is currently the leading scorer on the Spotlight circuit for the 7th Grade Division. We got a chance to holler at this scoring machine and here’s what he had to say. 

AC Showcase Almost Here: Who's Ready To Shine?

 

The Basketball Spotlight AC Showcase is right around the corner and competition will be fierce. This event has become one of Basketball Spotlight’s biggest stages with players and teams coming in all over the country. Now it’s almost time for us to see who emerges from this year’s edition.

DeAndre Ayton is back with another mixtape and this one really displays his top notch skills. This kid has a chance to be something special down the road. Right now he has a great chance to be #1 when we release our Class of 2017 rankings at the end of August.

Pete Marston Presents: Basketball Bootcamp

 

Beginning March 17th Coach Pete Marston will be conducting his Basketball Bootcamp. This is an opportunity to train exclusively with Pete Marston a former member of the St. Patrick’s School coaching staff. Coach Marston will bring the best of out every player and teach the fundamentals needed to excel in the game of basketball.

The Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week goes to Deondre Bournes of the Black Mambas. Bournes scored 23 points to help the Black Mambas defeat Team Flight 75-59 and win the Hoop Group Winter Showdown. Congrats to Deondre and keep working hard, this is just the beginning.

Luther Muhammad won Player Of Year honors last season while leading King Street Kings to the Grand Finale championship. Nate and Family on Senior Night 

Hello basketball world I had an awesome week and here’s how everything went. 

First of all I would like to thank all of the great Presidents. Monday was Presidents Day and usually we have the day off but not this year. We played against St. Patrick’s and they are loaded. They have Ray, Patrick and Khalif from Team IZOD and Marcus and Jamir from the Playaz even though Jamir was out. My team played solid and with all their talent we only lost by 11. I’m proud of my teammates and the way they fought especially my brother Josh “The Jet” he had a good game. 

Boys and Girls Club Of Trenton Youth League Recap

 

Tahmeer Glover (Divine Land)

Saturday Basketball Spotlight traveled to the Boys and Girls Club in Trenton, NJ to check out some action. Here are some of the players that impressed us in the capital city. 

Top Performers 

Tahmeer Glover Guard (Divine Land)- Glover was the lead catalyst while carrying his team to the victory. He’s very aggressive when penetrating and has the ability to make shots. In time he will need to tighten up his handle and decision making but he’s only a 6t Grader thus time is on his side. 

Brandon Hendryx Forward (Divine Land)- This 4th Grader is going to be huge one day. He already clogs up the middle and works hard to rebound. Since his mom was a high school star basketball is definitely in his blood so we look for him to be a monster down the road. 

Brandon Moore Guard (Cycle Kings)- This southpaw has the heart of a lion. He dribbled through traps and seemed to always make the correct pass. He’s small in stature but has a big presence on the floor. Any coach would love to have him. 

Tymire Bethea Guard (Cycle Kings)- Bethea was able to score at times and when he learns to take his time he will be even better. I like his feel for the game and scoring mentality. I can’t wait to see the finished product down the road. 

Nyaare McRae Forward (Basketball Spotlight)- Mcrae could have received MVP on the day. The energy player made all the right plays to help his team get the victory. He rebounded hard and played aggressive defense. When his team needed some buckets he came through by scoring the ball. 

Brian Lockhart Guard (Basketball Spotlight)- Lockhart has a slick handle and loves using the double crossover to trip up opponents. He got to the hole at will and used these skills to help his team get the win. I like how his future looks. 

Devin Coleman Guard (Basketball Spotlight)- This 4th Grader has the poise and posture to hang in there with his older opponents. He understands his strengths which help him stay out of trouble. We look for him to be a heady point guard down the road.

Khazir Brown Guard (East Coast Thunder)- Brown also has basketball bloodlines. He’s a Chew and they have produced several basketball studs throughout the Trenton area for years. Now it’s Brown’s turn to carry the torch and he seems more than ready after knocking down several outside shots. 

Prince Attoh Forward (East Coast Thunder)- This bruising played in a Charles Barkley mode. He charged the lane hard and should good touch when kissing the ball off the glass. He worked extremely hard to help his team get the win even though they came up short. 

Scih’mir Brown Guard (East Coast Thunder)- Scih’mir also got into the scoring column. He was able to help out from the perimeter and while penetrating. His play made things close down the stretch. He’s a good asset for this squad.

These Basketball Spotlight Alums has the site turning into a high school forum right now. Next up is Isaiah “Boogie” Briscoe. Two years ago Briscoe took the Spotlight circuit by storm and left with 8th Grade Player Of The Year Honors. Now helping St. Benedict's win NJ Prep Championships. Check out this vicious flush after a steal against Hun.

Tyus "Kid Mamba" Battle (Class 2016 Alum)

Tyus “Kid Mamba” Battle made national headlines after his performance at the Cancer Research Classic in West Virginia. His play draw rave reviews from top scouts including Dave Telep from ESPN. We can know see the highlights from this event courtesy of Ty Kish and City League Hoops. Battle received “The Stamp” after his 7th Grade season and is projected to a top 10 player when the new Class of 2016 ranking is released.

Myles Dread was one of the most impressive players I saw at John Lucas Future Of The Game Camp this summer in Hampton, Virginia. His play and ability to be a match up problem caught my eye immediately. He finished the camp as one of the top players. This season he played in both Spotlight events and helped his team reach the final four of the Clash For The Cup. We reached out to the Metro Sixers star and here’s what he had to say.

Basketball Spotlight Alum Mike Kidd-Gilchrist showed off his leaping ability when he banged on Greg Monroe of the Pistons. Kidd-Gilchrist played in several Basketball Spotlight with RBK All Stars including the Clash For The Cup. Gilchrist was issued “The Stamp” at the beginning of his 8th Grade season.

Introducing Javonni Bickham (New Hope, MN)

 

Javonni Bickham is a 6’5 forward in the Class of 2018. It’s only right that he wears number 42 because when I saw his footage he reminded me of a miniature Elton Brand. He has a decent face up game near the foul line and can pat the rock enough to drive past defenders. If he stretches out a few more inches his stock should rise even more. His AAU squad seems to be Playground Elite but in this video he's rocking with Team Sizzle.
