The Baby Baller Bonanza kicked off today in Lakewood and the talent was in the building. Here’s our breakdown of the top 11U players that got busy.

Top Performers Part 1

Kenny Jones Guard (We Run)- Watching Jones gave me visions of Myles Mack as a youngster. The crafty lead guard showed some flair and superb court vision while running the show. He made sure all his teammates were involved while also dropping a few buckets.

Luther Muhammad Forward (We Run)- After battling early foul trouble Luther took over the game inside. He dominated the glass and took his time scoring in the lane. This kid has a lot of potential and will be a name to know for years.

Jalen Brooks Guard (We Run)- Brooks helped his team in transition. He raced out to some uncontested lay ups and was a pest wile causing defensive pressure. He loves attacking from the wing and using the floater to convert.

Nasir Dowling Forward (T Town Ballers)- Typical Dowling was on display, inside scoring and an occasional 3 ball. His size and versatility remains and problem for the opposition on this level. He comes from a bloodline of former Trenton High School basketball stars.

Quashawn Lane Guard- (T Town Ballers)- The Capital City has a good point guard on the horizon with this kid. He sees the floor well and loves dancing through the defense. He has this crew playing on another level right now.

Reggie James Guard (T Town Ballers)- James was a pleasant surprise and the combo performed well. I like is drive and kick game and is ability to make shots. The Baller's backcourt should be straight for years with James and Lane.

Danny Bentley Guard- (T Town Ballers)- Bentley is built like a fullback and attacks the lane like a freight train. He made some smart passes and converted some buckets in transition.

The Baby Baller Bonanza kicked off today in Lakewood and the talent was in the building. Here’s our breakdown of the top 11U players that got busy.

11U Top Performers Part 2

Rob Higgins Guard (Natural Ballers)- Higgins squad lost both games but his play was outstanding. He has a lot of wiggle in his game and can score from anywhere on the floor. I like how he changes his shot in mid air to avoid shot blockers. I also like the flavor in his game.

Shelton Applewhite Forward (We Run)- Applewhite came to life in the second game against the Natural Ballers. He operated on the baseline while using his quickness to finish at the tin. He has good spin moves and a feathery touch.


Dorian Hardy Forward (We Run)- Hardy worked hard on the glass on the weak side. He kept the ball alive and caused the other squad to get into foul trouble. On defense he made his presence felt by altering shots.


Rashod Liggon Guard (Natural Ballers)- Liggon has unbelievable range and confidence. He launched a couple of shots well past the NBA 3 point line. You also can’t sleep on his ball handling ability.


Trevor Covey Forward (NJ Shore Shots)- Covey was a monster on the blocks he posted deep and scored at will in their win versus Natural Ballers. He already understands that he must keep the ball high when making his moves. He tallied 13 points.

Alex Bajohr Guard (NJ Shore Shots)- The slick point guard went to work against NB. He raced the rock up the floor and squeezed through gaps in the defense before converting. He finished with a game high 15 markers.

AJ Hoggard (Team Nelson)

The Baby Baller Bonanza kicked off today in Lakewood and the talent was in the building. Here’s our breakdown of the top 10U performers on Day 1.

10U Top Performers

Anthony Hoggard Guard (Team Nelson)- They say is father was a monster in his day and Hoggard definitely possesses those genes. The big guard attacked from the foul line area and made things look easy. His game is very advanced for a 4th Grader. When the game was on the line he took over and led them to the victory.

Jordan McCoy Guard (Playtime)- McCoy is the real deal and he proved it today. The fluid two guard glided past defenders and pulled up for easy buckets. His ability to attack along the baseline separates him from a lot of his peers. Playtime has a good one in this kid.

Mark Bradshaw Guard (Team Nelson)- The southpaw was actually the leading scorer on the squad. He has a punishing style and scores the rock in bunches. He can destroy you from deep or at the tin. He had a huge game in their loss to rival Team Nelson.

Kieves Turner Guard (Team Nelson)- Turner is a smart player that can hit the mid range pull up and play good defense. His steady play was needed in their tight win against Natural Ballers. He's a glue player and every team needs one.


Jaheim Tanksley Guard (Natural Ballers)- Mr. Tanklsey did all he could in their loss. The polished guard pushed the pill and created opportunities for his squad. He launched a couple of deep treys and dazzled the crowd with his ball handling. He competes at a very high level each time out.

Kobe Price Forward (Natural Ballers)- Price was a real problem inside. He has a long wiry frame which allows him to block shots and give his team second chance opportunities. His play helped keep things close in this nail biter.

Tahaj Parland Guard (Natural Ballers)- This fearless guard is a threat to shoot once he crosses mid court. He’s a pesky on defense while roaming the passing lanes for steals. He has the heart of a lion.


Justin Money Guard (Team Rebels)- Money’s ball handling and court vision is top notch. He used his crossover to get deep in the lane even making a defender fall in the process. The Chester area is known for spectacular guards and he might be next in line.

Darrien Dalcourt Forward (Team Rebels)- Dalcourt was a load inside and has soft touch. He grab several rebounds and scored on put backs. His inside presence made things tough for the Natural Ballers.


Zahree Harrison Guard (Team Rebels)- Harrison is an aggressive sharp shooter with good range. He handles some of the point guard duties on the perimeter and was heavily involved on defense.This boy has a pure wet jumper.

Craig Wrenn Guard (T Town Ballers)- Wrenn plays with that Trenton toughness. He charges the lane like a bull and absorbs contact before finishing. Craig is a hound on defense and loves applying pressure.


Delroy Gayle Guard (T Town Ballers)- Gayle is also a talent for this Trenton team. He has good size for this age level and the game that should only get better as he gets older. Keep an eye out for him.

Baby Baller Bonanza Rules And Regulations

Refunds: There will be no refunds for any team pulling out of this event.

Forfeits: Forfeits will be enforced to keep the games on time. Any teams that purposely forfeits because of non pool advancement will not be allowed to enter any other Basketball Spotlight Events.

Playing Times: All Games Use Stop Clocks

9U Division- 2 (10 Minute Halves)
10U Division- 2 (11 Minute Halves)
11U Division- 2 (12 Minute Halves)

Fouls:
Foul Out- 5 Fouls
1-1 Bonus- 10 Fouls
Double Bonus- 13 Fouls

Game Time and Grace Period:
Each Team is responsible of being at the gym at least 15 minutes before their scheduled game. There will be no grace period allowed for any games. There will only be a 5 minute warm up time before the game and 2 minutes at halftime.

Overtime: 3 minutes.

Time Outs:
There will two full timeouts a half (4 per game) for each team. No carry over and no 30 seconds time outs.

Uniforms: Each Team must have two sets of uniforms (light and dark).

Mercy Rule:
If a team is ahead by 20 points or more with 2 minutes remaining in the contest the game will be called at that point. The team ahead by 20 will be awarded the victory.

Player Ejections:
Any player ejected from a game will be suspended the next game. Any player involved in or ejected for fighting will be suspended the remainder of the tournament.

Birth Certificates:
All teams must have birth certificates for each player on their roster in case of a challenge. Each team will be allowed unlimited grade exceptions. Grade Exceptions must have paperwork. AAU Rules are enforced in terms of age.

Challenges: Must be made before the game and will cost the challenging team $60. If the challenging team is correct their money will be refunded.

Tie Breaker Criteria (In Order):
1. Won-Loss Record
2. Head to Head Competition
3. Point System (Margin Of Victory)- Any team winning by more than 15 points will only be rewarded 15 points for the victory. So if you win by 20 points you still will be rewarded only 15 points.
4. Least Amount of Points allowed in Pool Play
5. Coin Flip

Attention: Any teams that don't complete the tournament including 3rd Place games will be subject to be omitted from future Basketball Spotlight Events.

Any rule not mentioned above will be worked out fairly at the discretion of the tournament director.

What’s up hoop heads?

This week we had 16u D2 states. In practice we worked on the shell defense and all of our sets. We got our big man Jameer back, so we needed to get him up to snuff on the plays. I think he caught on pretty quick. We knew we were going to be playing up so we were really focused at practice.

On Friday we started off against Asbury Park Rec. I think we started off http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifpretty slow and it seemed like we were in awe of their athleticism and physical play. The refs weren’t helping us out either LOL. Coach Pete told us to calm down, run our plays, push the ball, and not make so many turnovers. It still took us awhile to get into the groove, and we kept making crosscourt, soft passes and they were stealing them. In the 2nd half we pushed the ball and made better decisions with the rock. We started boxing out, which our coaches stress in practice. In the 2nd half we cut down the lead to about 13 (from 25), and then they had their run and were down by a lot again. We ended up losing by about 20, and after the game coach Pete said we played well in the 2nd half and in the beginning we came out nervous.

Basketball Spotlight Super Showcase Early Interest

The Basketball Spotlight Super Showcase will be loaded once again. This is the only exposure event that guarantees to bring together the top players for each class. Last summer the Super Showcase was packed with heavy talent and great moments. Some of the top players have already confirmed. Remember we are only taking 60 players for each class. Will We Run Finally Hold A Spotlight Banner?

The Baby Baller Bonanza is locked and loaded. The little guys will have their chance to shine in front of the Spotlight staff. Here’s a brief breakdown of some of the talent that will be in the building.

Baby Baller Bonanza Preview 11U

We Run: The #1 ranked team in the region will finally feel the heat of the top spot. This is a deep 11U field and now they are the hunted. We expect big things from this squad including Luther Muhammad, Jalen Brooks and Shelton Applewhite.

Riverside Hawks: Something tells me that the Hawks are here to overtake that #1 spot. They haven’t held a Spotlight banner since AC Showcase 2010, so they definitely due. Their backcourt of Cameron Wynter and Zedrek Ferrell are tough to handle.

DC Assault: Assault came close to winning the Clash, now they are back to close the deal. Kiyon Johnson now suits up with this group and also keep an eye on scoring guard Kenny Tyree.

Natural Ballers: AC Showcase ended earlier than expected for his bunch and now they are ready to show they are still a force. Jaheim Tanksley is one of the top point guards in this age division even while pulling up in age.

T Town Ballers: This first year squad has made a great impression and seems to keep improving as the season progresses. Nasir Dowling and Quashawn Lane form a dynamic duo.

PWC: This scrappy bunch returns and we are anxious to see them get down. Duke Cameron is an exciting floor general that gets this team going. They should bring wall to wall action.

NJ Shore Shots: This group competed hard in AC while competing in a tough pool. The competition in Lakewood won’t be any easier. They will need to be on their a game to make things happen.

10U Division

Playtime Panthers: The New Jersey State Champs are riding high right now. They finished second at the Clash For The Cup but are now looking to hold that Spotlight banner. They might be a tough out for anyone.

Team Nelson: Anthony Hoggard is capable of pumping in over 20 points each time he touches the court. TN is looking for a great tune up before trying to win their regional championship.

Natural Ballers: NB did some damage in the 10U division at the Clash before falling in the semifinals. Will super guard Tanksley have enough in the tank to play both age divisions?

CBC: I know this group will be coming to play hard. We expect some good guard play and hectic defense from this crew.

MABC: The Bengals love to go hard no matter the situation. They will be making their Spotlight debut. We wish them the best.

What’s Up Everybody!

It’s the “Shoota”. My week at school was good. In my science class I had to dissect a frog, which was pretty cool, my teacher came around to each student and you had to identify parts that she pointed out. Of course you know I got an “A”. There’s this girl in my class that cries every time she gets something wrong, the first time she started crying in class ”I was like what in the world;” but everybody said she’s been doing that since she’s been at the school. She’s in all my classes and she does this in every class, so when my science teacher walked away from her while she was crying I knew the deal.

Breakdown: Maitland game has reached new heights since moving to Florida. The point guard has been tearing up the circuit with Nike Team Florida and recently starred in the Orlando Jr. Elite Showcase. Malik is currently ranked as the top point guard in the state and has many of the top high schools in Florida hoping for his services.

Diary Of A Baller: Isaiah "Boogie" Briscoe (Team Scan, Playaz) Entry #2

Monday, I went to school a little tired after my long weekend at the Playaz Club Spring Fling. I played 15U and had a good weekend. We lost in the championship but I made the All Tournament Team. In Science Class Mrs. Pierre Louis (Nathaniel’s mom) gave us our test scores. I got a B and an A+. After school I went to my friend backyard to play basketball until 9 when I returned home to complete my homework.

Tuesday, I was happy during second period because I received 2 A+ scores on my recent math tests. I was proud of myself because both test were hard but and I had to study a lot. At lunch time my dad text me and told me that Coach McCleod from St. Benedicts was leaving the school. I was so disappointed I couldn’t finish my lunch. After school I went to Playaz 15U practice to get ready for Boo Williams. The next morning I went to school and did what I had to do to make sure I was cleared to go to Boo Williams.

Thursday, we had a lot of fun at school. After school I went to my final tune up practice with the Playaz 15U for Boo Williams. After that I headed to open gym and stayed there until 10 o’clock. That night I went home, took a shower and went straight to sleep. I forgot to do my homework because I knew I wasn’t going to school the next day (smile).

Friday, we were on our way to Boo Williams and I was excited to play with my boys again. Our first game we lost to Chris Paul All Stars by 4. We should have won but I must say they have a very good point guard. I had 17 points and no turnovers. After the game we went back to the hotel and I chilled with my boys Corrie, Nas and Rashard. We hit the pool and had a good time.

Saturday, we played Albany City Rocks at 8 o’clock. We played good and beat them. I had about 7 assists (shiny dimes). Then we went to watch our older team play against Texas Titans. It was a hot game but Kyle, Darrick, Savon and Nev stepped up and we came out with the win.

Sunday, we didn’t do much. We lost to Team Melo after blowing a 15-1 lead. After that we went to watch our 16’s loss by 1 to Chris Paul All Stars but our 17’s clapped Indy Speice by 20 in the EYBL League.

Special Shout Out To: Korrie, Kavon and Deandre they are too funny.

Trey Lowe Picks Pennington Prep

Trey Lowe Is Pennington Prep Bound

Trey Lowe of F.A.C.E.S. has decided to attend Pennington Prep School next fall. Lowe has been a fixture on the AAU scene for years and made All Tournament team at several Spotlight events. Trey’s father Sam is comfortable with the decision, “I think it’s a good fit for Trey. We checked out other schools including Peddie, Hun, Conwell Egan and Lawrenceville Prep. Pennington Prep has a good education program and he will play right away” said Sam.

ZagsBlog Reports: Boyle Leaves St. Patricks

Boyle Headed To Sunny Florida

Kevin Boyle, the fiery Irishman who over the course of more than 20 years turned Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick into a perennial national powerhouse and produced numerous high-Division 1 standouts and several NBA players, is leaving to become head coach at Montverde (Fla.) Academy.

“It’s a beautiful, beautiful campus,” Boyle told The Daily News. “Montverde Academy strives to be the best in whatever it does and that’s the same for the basketball program. I’m looking forward to the challenge but at the same time, leaving St. Patrick with a heavy heart. I’ve made a lot of good friends along the way.”
The job includes a $130,000 annual salary plus a car and a four-bedroom home, multiple sources said. Florida has no state income tax and the cost of living is cheaper than in New Jersey.

Potomac Valley Regional Championship 12U Recap: Maryland Panthers Repeat As Champs

When the smoke cleared Maryland Panthers won the gold.

The MD Panthers 6th grade team won their 2nd straight Potomac Valley regional championship beating DC Assault 50-29. Andre Boykin reestablished himself as the region's most dominant 6th grader with 18 pts and 17 rebs in the championship game. Along with the usual stalwarts, point guard Donovann Toatley and wing Raine McKeython, guards Travian Anderson, Kwincy Hall, and Trent Martin all made key contributions to the total team victory. The Panthers won 7 games on the 3 day weekend by an average of 24 points as they claimed the #2 seed for the 6th grade nationals scheduled for July in Hampton.

Towns Headed To Pennington Prep

Karl Towns Will Be A Red Raider

Karl Towns has decided to take his talent to the Pennington Prep School. Towns starred on the grammar school AAU scene has a 6th Grader but has spent the last two seasons playing on the high school level with Team NJ ABC. In a recent interview the Karl stated his reasons for attending Pennington. ” Well, the reason why I choose Pennington was because…with basketball you know… you can go to any school to play basketball… but the education at Pennington goes way beyond basketball. With me going to Pennington, it opens many more doors, not only for athletics but for education and job wise. When I was given the opportunity to go to Pennington I just had to take it” said Towns.
