Diary Of A Baller: Jordan Forehand Entry #13

What's up basketball world. It's your boy Jordan. My school year at Rutgers Prep will be over next week. I have four more academic days of school left. I am completing my 20th Century Final Project, after that, school is pretty much a wrap! On June 1st, the class is going on a school trip to the Amish Country for 4 days.

My 14U New Jersey Shore Shot team played in the Basketball Spotlight Memorial Day Classic. This event is one of the biggest for rising 8th graders. Though I truly wanted to play in this event, I was not able to due to the fact that I play on multiple teams and both teams were playing this weekend. It was my 15u team, Sports University's, turn this weekend. I heard from my coach, Adam Turner, that the team played well. I knew that they would. Coach Adam will be away at basketball camp (Hoop Group Skills Camp) throughout the summer, so for this tournament and the rest of the summer, we will be coached by Yonah Greenstein. I want to give a shout out to the team Jimbo, Conner, Garrett, Brandon, PJ, Andrew Robbie Rob and Austin. Thanks Coach Adam for all that you taught me this year.

This tournament was hosted by Mike Melton. Mike started Basketball Spotlight which has allowed many players the opportunity to be exposed. Opportunities that they would not have got anywhere else. Mike gives a tremendous amount of his time towards this program. For myself and the many other players who have been mentioned on the web site, I would like to say thank you for everything that you have done.

My 15U team, Sports University/Team IZOD, played in the Gym Rats tournament. We went 2-1 in our bracket, but did not advance based on the rules of the tournament. We were all pretty upset, but we all knew that we should not have lost the game that we lost. Not taking anything away from the team that beat us, but we felt that we did not play at our best. Another lesson learned. I also got a chance to play with the 16U team. Our 16U and 17U teams both made it to the championship, but unfortunately did not bring home the chip. The team and I had a good time together on the trip. Shout out to my boy's Joshua, Neville, Matt J, Matt R, Tata, Hanif, Rodney, Dilapso, Michael, Luke, Jay, Jerome and Brandon. Next time...the CHIP! Thanks go out to Ed Bright and the Sports U coaching staff.

As for my choice of high school...here's a clue...the school requires a dress code!

Basketball Spotlight MDC 13U Championship Recap: Team Nelson Wins Triple Crown

Team Nelson Wins "Triple Crown"

Kyle Coleman scored 12 points and Mahir Johnson added 10 markers as Team Nelson defeated Team Final 42-41 to win the Basketball Spotlight MDC 13 and Under title. Tavaris Headen finished with 19 points in defeat. Team Nelson became the first team to win the Basketball Spotlight "Triple Crown" (Grand Finale, AC Showcase and MDC).

Mr. Memorial Day
Kyle Coleman Guard (Team Nelson)- Coleman’s buzzer beater in the semifinals gave his squad a chance to win the “Triple Crown”. He kept his big play ability going in the finals as he made some key buckets on drives down the stretch to get the win. Coleman knows how to dribble through the tightest spots before scoring on a floater or outstretched lay-up.

Spotlight Players

Mahir Johnson Guard (Team Nelson)- Johnson shined again at the MDC. I love his mid range pull up and craftiness when handling the pill. He handles the rock enough to create space and then shoot a defender eyes out.

Nazier Chew Guard (Team Nelson)- Chew showed the swagger of a top notch floor general. He got past defenders all weekend with an array of slick dribbling moves. Once he broke the first line of defense he dropped it off to cutting teammates. He also looks good dishing the pill in transition.

Tavaris Headen Guard (Team Final)- The strong southpaw got anywhere he wanted on the floor while being a physical scoring guard. On defense Headen uses his strength to keep ball handlers in place and force them into turnovers.

Matt Risse Forward (Team Final)- Risse fought off injury all weekend but I could still see the skill set and potential is there. He has size, can handle the rock and shoot the outside shot. Risse also is a problem on the glass. He’s a Danny Ferry at Duke type player.

Cole Moody Forward (Team Final)- The big fela used his wide frame to box out opponents and score in the paint. On most plays he would shield defenders and then toss the ball off the glass with his left hand.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 11U Championship Recap: Team Battle Takes Home The Gold Ball!

Team Battle Keeps Rolling

Darius Gillon and Tyus Battle scored 17 points apiece as Team Battle defeated DC Assault 52-34 to win the Basketball Spotlight MDC crown. Anthony Mr. Cowan finished with 21 points for DC Assault in the loss.

Darius Gillon Forward (Team Battle)- Gillon capped off a great tournament by dominating DC Assault on the glass and with put backs. His presence and energy on both ends of the floor gave his squad a serious boost. He’s really beginning to understand how dominant he can be during the games. He has to be the most improved player in this region and what’s even scarier is that he still has a ways to go in developing.

Spotlight Players

Tyus Battle Guard (Team Battle)- Battle was spectacular once again. The talented guard gave the crowd a taste of his exploits. During the semifinals he went for 21 against KBR Raptors and finished off the tourney with a great all around performance in the finals. This kid is something serious!

Anthony Cowan Guard (DC Assault)- Mr. Cowan didn’t go down without a fight. In the second half he caught a hot streak from behind the arc nailing 3 consecutive treys to try and keep the game close. The entire tourney the mega point guard gave the Northeast a taste of his unique floor general skills.

Jamar Watson Guard (DC Assault)- Watson has a high arching trey ball that looks good when it’s released. He gets to the cup with a combination of power and dribbling skills. Boogie Watson is definitely a scoring guard. Keep an eye on him.

Azar Swain scored 24 points as Bay State Magic defeated PYAA 42-33 to win the Basketball Spotlight MDC 10 and Under Crown. Jovon Allie scored 18 markers for PYAA in the loss. We would like to congratulate the entire Bay State Magic squad for winning the Gold Ball.

Basketball Spotlight MDC Preview: 11 And Under

The Kentucky State Champs Are Headed To The MDC!

The 11 and Under Division at the MDC is smoking. This 12 team field features some of the top teams on the East Coast. Here’s a look inside one of our best brackets.

MDC 11U Preview

Hoop Dreams (KY)- The Kentucky State Champs are on their way here and feel they have a shot to bring the title back to the Bluegrass State. The backcourt of Jordan Perry and Nicholas Reed is tremendous then when you throw in 6’1 giant Malik Dow they become a problem. They will be tested early with a pool game against F.A.C.E.S.. Wow!

Team Battle: Is there a better 11 and Under Team around? We will find out as TB will be gunning to defend their MDC crown. The trio of Tyus Battle, Jamir Harris and Darius Gillan are enough to keep any opposing coach up at night tossing and turning.

Gauchos: I haven’t seen the Choz since the Clash For The Cup but word is that they are thriving since Brandon Randolph took over the point guard duties. Shamorie Ponds can light up anyone’s scoreboard at any time.


DC Assault: I love watching this squad especially the backcourt of Anthony Mr. Cowan and Reggie Gardner. Team Battle knocked them off during the semifinals in AC so look for some revenge in the eyes of PV’s finest.

New Heights: Rakym Felder is one of the hottest players in the region right now. The lefty is a bona fide scorer and his range is when he walks in the gym. They are hungry for their first Basketball Spotlight crown and it might happen this weekend.

F.A.C.E.S: Speed Kills and this group are as fast as they come. They apply tremendous pressure and move the rock up the floor in a hurry. They have been very close to bringing the trophy this year and this weekend might be their time to shine.

Other Teams To Watch: KBR Raptors, Long Island Lightning, SJ Juice All Stars, Newark Titans, Team Underrated and CJ Jammers.

Can Anybody Derail THe Team Final Express?

The 12U Division at the Basketball Spotlight MDC is loaded top to bottom. We have some of the top teams and players in the country making the trip to Neptune. Here’s a breakdown of who will be in the building at Hoop Group Headquarters.

MDC 12U Preview

Team Final: Right now they are the “Kings Of The Hill” on the East Coast. Their recent hot streak includes titles at the Clash For The Cup, AC Showcase and Mid Atlantic Regionals. Now they are trying to repeat as MDC Champs before taking the trip to Hampton, VA for the Nationals.

Columbia Slammers: The South Carolina State Champs are ready to go. They’ve added the #1 6th Grader in the Nation Perry Dozier Jr. for the MDC. Dozier is as talented as they come and will be eager to show how S.C. ballers get it in. We will see if they are ready for the Spotlight.



F.A.C.E.S.: The Boys in Black are anxious to hit the hardwood after falling in the NJ State Finals. It’s a safe bet that Coach Cole will have his troops focused for the MDC. This is a squad that nobody really wants to see.


Gauchos: The Choz are coming down to get busy. They won the “Show Me Invitational” and have a date in the Metropolitan AAU finals Monday. Coach Science and crew have a date with Team Final Sunday, which should be a dandy.

South Jersey Blitz: The Blitz made a run to the Mid Atlantic finals before running into Team Final. They have serious guard play in Myles Powell, Mekhi Bryant and Eli Cain so expect some big things from these Burlington County Boys.

Albany Dream Team: ADT comes back after getting their first Basketball Spotlight experience in Atlantic City. They have an all around solid crew and can knock off anyone on any giving night. Jamil Hood is a tough guard to keep an eye on.

U Turn Warriors: The last time I saw this squad they were battling Team Takeover in the MIT finals. I like their inside presence and how they go hard to entire game. They are not driving from Richmond to compete they are coming to win it all.

Connecticut Basketball Club: You might remember these guys they were CT 300 and they made some noise down in AC. Now they have added a couple of pieces and moved up to 12U but you can still expect some hard nose play.

Philly Aztecs: This squad has improved tremendously since the Grand Finale. They still have scoring guard Stevie Jordan but their front court has helped them become a better ball club. Expect some fire works once they step on the floor.

NJ Shore Shots: The Shore Shots have been playing great ball lately and will be looking to expand on their success. Nyrique Smith is one of the most underrated guards around and he might be using the MDC as his coming out party. We will see.

Linden Ballers: The always tough Ballers will be ready to brawl as usual. Guard Kyle Phipps is tough on both ends of the floor and Isiah Still is capable of heating up quickly.

Peacemakers Are The Hottest Team In The Region!

The 14 and Under Division at the MDC is stacked with heavy hitters. The team that survives this bracket could really call themselves champions. Here’s a look at who will be making the trip down to Lakewood.

MDC 14U Preview

Peacemakers: “The Bullies” are now one of the hunted. They won the Elite 80 Expo, AC Showcase and the Mid Atlantic Regionals. They are fully stocked and word is big Semaj Reed will be suiting up so the rest of the field better look out.

Team Nelson: The Chester boys have a chip on their shoulders. After losing in the finals of the AC Showcase they got bumped in the playoffs of the Mid Atlantic Regionals. They should be on a war path once they hit Lakewood.

Long Island Lightning: This group of Lightning will be looking to bring home their first Basketball Spotlight trophy. The have the talent to get it done especially with Super Forward Jason Boswell and guard John Severe. Will Lightning strike in Lakewood?

DC Assault: The boys from Potomac Valley have joined the party. I saw them last year at the Playaz tourney and if they still have the same squad, Look Out! Melo Trumbell can flat out shoot the rock. Welcome to the Spotlight DC Assault.

NY Panthers: The Panthers made it to finals last year and are back to take it all the way. Look for Master Coleman, Dalique Mingo and Maynard Grant to step up when things get rough. Coach Kat seems to always find a win so let’s see if he could pull another rabbit out of his hat.

KBR Fliers: The Fliers fell in the NJ State Semifinals and are back for some wreck. Fuquan McDonald heads the frontline and they also have a solid group of guards. They should make a solid run at the MDC.

Higher Ground Warriors: I like what I saw from HG in the MA Regionals. Please make sure you take a look at big time guard Amar Stukes. He has some very smooth moves and good basketball instincts.


NJ Shore Shots: Mr. Diary Jordan Forehand will be in the building and trying to help his team bring home the gold. They have a tough road to travel but anything can happen at the MDC.

The Triple Crown Is Within Reach?

The 13 and Under Division at the Basketball Spotlight MDC features some up and coming squads and a few teams with some scores to settle. Here’s a look at who will be in the building in this age bracket.

MDC 13U Preview

Team Nelson: The #2 team in the region will be attempting to win the Basketball Spotlight’s version on the “Triple Crown”. They already took home the Grand Finale and AC Showcase crowns. Now after getting upset at the hands of Team Kobe in the Regional Semifinal they should be hungry for some hardware.

Team Underrated: Champions die hard so TU feels like they should be the favorite to repeat as MDC Champs. They had some player movement early on but should be ready to chase the title. Mr. MDC Chris Davis will be leading the way.

Team Scan: This squad has been quietly stacking their trophy case this year. They have the pieces to give any squad a hard time and with an experienced Coach at the helm watch out for them. Adeyinka Adams and Kevin Seymour make up a great 1-2 punch.

Team Final: Matt Reese and crew will be making their first appearance in the MDC. The smooth forward will have a first hand chance to show Basketball Spotlight what his game is all about. We will be watching.

CJ Jammers: The Jammers have been solid all year and have ran past several squads with decent reps. Jake Dadika runs the show and is capable of shooting your eyes out on any given night. Look for them to make a strong push.

Playaz Basketball Club: Nassir Barrino is capable of going for 30 points each time he steps on the floor. PBC applies a lot of pressure and is a scrappy squad with a lot to prove. That makes them pretty dangerous.


NJ Shore Shots: When Tarin Smith is your point guard you have a chance of knocking off anyone. His smooth approach to the game and confidence on the floor makes him a special player. This field is kind of tough so his work will be cut out for him.

CJ Hawks: The NJ D2 Champs have come to show they bang with the best. They will be making the trip to Memphis for the Nationals and will use the MDC as a measuring stick.

Basketball Spotlight MDC Rules and Regulations

Refunds: There will be no refunds for any team pulling out of this event.

Forfeits: Forfeits will be enforced to keep the games on time. Any teams that purposely forfeits because of non pool advancement will not be allowed to enter any other Basketball Spotlight Events.

Playing Times: All Games Use Stop Clocks

10U Division- 2 (12 Minutes Halves)
11U Division- 2 (13 Minute Halves)
12U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)
13U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)
14U Division- 2 (14 Minute Halves)

Fouls:
Foul Out- 5 Fouls
1-1 Bonus- 10 Fouls
Double Bonus- 13 Fouls

Game Time and Grace Period:
Each Team is responsible of being at the gym at least 15 minutes before their scheduled game. There will be no grace period allowed for any games. There will only be a 5 minute warm up time before the game and 2 minutes at halftime.

Time Outs:
There will two full timeouts a half (4 per game) for each team. No carry over and no 30 seconds time outs.

Uniforms: Each Team must have two sets of uniforms (light and dark).

Mercy Rule:
If a team is ahead by 20 points or more with 2 minutes remaining in the contest the game will be called at that point. The team ahead by 20 will be awarded the victory.

Player Ejections:
Any player ejected from a game will be suspended the next game. Any player involved in or ejected for fighting will be suspended the remainder of the tournament.

Birth Certificates:
All teams must have birth certificates for each player on their roster in case of a challenge. Each team will be allowed 3 grade exceptions. Grade Exceptions must have paperwork.

Challenges: Must be made before the game and will cost the challenging team $60.

Daily Admissions: $7 Adults $5 Kids (No Weekend Passes) Note: 2 Coaches and 1 Scorebook person will be allowed in free from each team.

Tie Breaker Criteria (In Order):
1. Won-Loss Record
2. Head to Head Competition
3. Point System (Margin Of Victory)- Any team winning by more than 15 points will only be rewarded 15 points for the victory. So if you win by 20 points you still will be rewarded only 15 points.
4. Least Amount of Points allowed in Pool Play
5. Coin Flip

Attention: Any teams that don't complete the tournament including 3rd Place games will be subject to be omitted from future Basketball Spotlight Events.

Anything that's not covered in the above rules will be handled fairly by the tournament director.
