Grand Finale 08 Preview: 11U Division

Will Team Battle Bring Home Another Crown?

The 11U Division at the Holiday Classic should be very interesting. Some of the top squads are returning and we also have some new faces mixed with out of the area talent. Here’s a breakdown of who’s in the building.

11U Grand Finale of 08 Preview

Team Battle: The areas #1 team returns to cap of the calendar year with another title. The trophy shelf is stacked with several crowns and they are still hungry for more. Mr. Everything Tyus Battle is back with a few inches on his frame. Joining him is the core Jamir Harris, Edriese Patterson, and Chase Barney’s. Word also has it that super guard Leondre Washington has come over from Riverside. If so then they should be ready.

F.A.C.E.S.: No NJ tourney is complete without a F.A.C.E.S. VS. Team Battle matchup and we might be headed to another as the Newark based squad returns RJ Cole, Ray Montilous and Shyquan Gibbs. You knew they will be bringing their toughness and some explosive play. Things should be very interesting.

Gauchos: Here come the Choz, The Gauchos impressed me in the finals of the Game Over tourney. They are back with a serious crew including George Pena, Brandon Randolph, Romello Rashard and big time baller Shamorie Pond that came over from Riverside.

KBR Raptors: One of the best games of the season featured KBR and F.A.C.E.S at the MDC. KBR has a crew of ballers including Cami Calderon. They don’t back down from no one and should be ready for wreck. I can’t wait.

PTS Pistons: The Pistons traveled up I95 for Maryland and we welcome you to Basketball Spotlight. I haven’t seen this team rock but the basketball from the area is something serious thus they shouldn’t be different.

Bay State Magic: The Big Fish from Beantown also hit I95 from up north and are here to show that they have players Boston. They will be tested early as they must face NJ perennial power Team Battle during pool play. It’s On!

Other Team’s To Watch:

Team Ron Artest
South Jersey Blitz
On Point Cyclones
Delaware’s Finest
Mid Jersey Heat
Team Underrated

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Will Joyce

Name: Will Joyce

Position: Forward

HT: 6’3

Hometown: Newark, NJ

AAU Team: PPY Pirates Elite

Strengths: Joyce is long wiry and at times can dominate a game on the glass and scoring in the lane. He runs the floor decent and uses his length to cause problems on both ends of the floor. His wingspan helps him get extra rebounds and allows him to score easier on put backs. It also helps him block shots regularly.

Areas of Improvement: Joyce needs to add some pounds because he will probably project as a power forward thus he needs to beef up for the bruising. In the same breath he will be a tough guard for some at that position because he does have quickness and isn’t afraid to step out and face the basket. Extra strength will also give him more control of his body and hopefully add to his conditioning.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Dwayne Foreman Jr.

Name: Dwayne Foreman Jr.

Position: Shooting Guard

HT: 6’2

Hometown: Spring Valley, NY

AAU Team: Playaz Basketball Club

Strengths: Foreman passes the look test. He’s long and some athleticism while also showing some good promise. DJ stretches out for easy lay ups and can score in bunches once he gets going. He handles the ball with confidence and has the mindset to make good decisions with the rock. Good Potential.

Areas of Improvement: Foreman must start by first improving his intensity on the floor. Sometimes he disappears and he’s too much of a talent for too occur. He also needs to improve his outside by working on his rotation and arch after his release. Right it’s too much of a line drive type shot. Finally some weight room action would help him improve his strength to absorb contact and hit the boards.

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Travis Procida

Name: Travis Procida

Position: Point Guard

HT: 5’11

Hometown: Paramus, NJ

AAU Team: Pocono Trailblazers

Strengths: Travis runs the point efficiently and sees the floor like many coaches want. He delivers the ball at the right places for teammates and can score the rock if needed. He also knows how to use his body and shield defenders that try to steal or stripe the ball.

Areas of Improvement: On the next level Travis can be a good player but he will have to increase his foot speed on both ends of the floor. Offensively he will need to get the rock up the floor quicker and improve his athleticism. Defensively increased speed will help him guard smaller quicker guards and disrupt opponent’s offensive plans.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Shacore Edwards

Name: Shacore Edwards

Position: Shooting Guard

HT: 6’1

Hometown: Irvington, NJ

AAU Team: New Jersey Panthers

Strengths: Offensively Edwards is definitely a talent. He has the smoothness and feel for the game that should take him to the next level. He’s a bona-fide play maker and has the scoring prowess to take over any game. Once he gets going and finds his groove it’s hard to contain this youngster. On defense he roams the lanes and uses his long arms to roam the lane and cause havoc. He also does mind sticking his head in for big boards.

Areas of Improvement: Like most prolific scorers Edwards must learn how to move and play without the rock in his hands. Sometimes he stands around waiting for the ball or gets frustrated when it’s not thrown his way immediately. He has an awkward release on his shot but some coaches might let it slide because it's effective. He also would need to improve his on-ball defense by moving his feet.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Gabriel Chandler

Name: Gabril Chandler

Position: Forward

Ht: 6’3

Hometown: Atlantic City, NJ

AAU Team: NJ Shore Shots

Strengths: Chandler is a beast inside and has the soft touch to go with it. He has quickness on the baseline while also being able rebound like a man child. I also like the way he moves without the ball and establishes post position. He has good strides.

Areas Of Improvement: We don’t know how tall Chandler will grow and it’s good that he’s showing good range but now he will have to expand his ball handling and decision making on the perimeter. Either way he will be find.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Dylan Daniluk

Name: Dylan Daniluk

Position: Forward

HT: 6’1

Hometown: Runnemede, NJ

AAU Team: Harvest Knights

Strengths: Dylan has a high basketball IQ and showed me he does possess some perimeter skills. He’s an all around contributor in terms on hitting shots, rebounding, playing defense and hustling. He also has good size for a future small forward. Good Potential.

Areas of Improvement: To make the transition to the wing. Dylan will need to work on his ball handling and decision making. He will also need to extend his range beyond the 3 point line. Finally he will need to get stronger and improve his lateral movement because he will have to defend quicker players on the perimeter.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Jordan Forehand

Name: Jordan Forehand

Position: Shooting Guard

HT: 6’0

Hometown: Bridgewater, NJ

AAU Team: Hoop Heaven

Strengths: Jordan is a great athlete and has some take over the game characteristics. He drives to the cup and finishes better than most in this class. Forehand’s leaping ability allows him to get his shot off over many shot blockers. He also has the strength to absorb contact while in traffic and still finish off the play. On defense he moves his feet well and goes hard on the glass for caroms. Good Potential.

Areas of Improvement: Jordan needs to shoot between 500 and 1000 jump shots a day. Not only will this improve his accuracy but it will also give his confidence in his outside. This improvement will make his penetration game even more deadly. It also would keep the defenders honest. He also will need to work on his decision making because he most likely will play some point guard on the next level.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Jared Nickens

Name: Jared Nickens

Position: Shooting Guard

HT: 6’2
Hometown: North Brunswick, NJ

AAU Team: Jersey Shore Fliers

Strengths: Nickens is a wiry forward and has the long limbs that indicate he’s nowhere near done growing. His outside shot has good form and he’s very confident shooting it. His length also plays a factor in rebounding and playing the passing lanes.

Areas of Improvement: Nickens will need to get stronger like most of his peers. He also will need to work on putting the rock on the floor and creating his own shot. Right now he’s a player under the radar but with these enhancements watch out for his stock in high school.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Jon Azzinaro

Name: Jon Azzinaro

Position: Point Guard

Ht: 5’7

Hometown: Evesham, NJ

AAU Team: Gym Rat

Strengths: Jon has one of the best strokes in the region. He can hit the shot in transition or in a half court set. If he gets hits his confidence begins to soar and he launches it more.

Areas Of Improvement: Jon’s hot stroke sometimes takes away from his decision making at the point. At his current size he needs to focus more on setting up teammates and playing lockdown defense. Instead of pulling in transition or when the ball is rotated he should make the extra pass or put more pressure on the defense by penetrating.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Bryan Rivers

Name: Bryan Rivers

Position: Point Guard

Ht: 5’10

Hometown: West Windsor, NJ

AAU Team: W W P Cougars

Strengths: There’s something that sticks out about this youngster. He has the swagger that’s shows his confidence his legit. I really like his court vision and unselfishness on the floor. He has a few more inches to grow (long arms) which will make him a more interesting prospect. I also like the way he uses both hands to create and finish.

Areas Of Improvement: Rivers like some other youngsters need to have more confidence in his outside shot which would keep the defense honest. Packing some meat on his frame also wouldn’t hurt as it would allow him to finish in traffic. Good Potential.

Elite 80 Expo Profile: Shafeek Taylor

Name: Shafeek Taylor

Position: Small Forward

Ht: 6’2

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

AAU Team: Peacemakers

Strengths: Taylor is a long but strong forward that does a lot of different things. He can score when needed or hit the glass for his team. He operates well on the baseline and uses his body to initiate contact. On defense he holds his ground well while defending the post or perimeter.

Areas Of Improvement: For Taylor to continue in his progress of becoming a top prospect he would need to increase his speed, explosiveness and outside shot. He looks like he might be a sure shot wing but with some more time in the gym this could be a reality.
