Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Jaylen Murray (PSA Cardinals)

The 7th Grade Division was packed with some fresh faces and usual suspects. Here’s our second look at the top players that attended the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Jaylen Murray Guard (PSA Cardinals)
Murray has a point guard frame but is wired to score. This youngster gets buckets quickly and against any competition. He started the event out with a 22 point performance Brooklyn Rens (3 treys) and went down shooting with 24 markers in their semi-final loss to CIA Bounce. You never have to worry about this kid bringing his game.

Brandon Weston Forward (PSA Cardinals)
Weston serves as an inside presence for the Cardinals but is really a wing. Though he’s under-sized for the post he usually uses his quickness to get past bigger defenders. He helped Murray with the scoring load and also had his best performance in the semifinal loss to CIA Bounce with 21 points.
Tasheem Pickett Guard (PSA Cardinals)
Pickett is the table setter for this bunch and is great at applying pressure to the defense. His low dribble, quickness and creativity allows him to get throw gaps and in the lane at will. His ability to set up his teammates and play pressure defense is one of the main reasons the Cardinals had so much success this season.

Marcus Burnett Guard (New Heights)
Wow Burnett had a great showing in his first game of this event. He gave CIA Bounce a full arsenal of his work. The big guard showed he could hit it from (3 treys), attack off the dribble and finish at the tin. He’s definitely a three level guy so when you add in that he has a few more inches to go things could get scary. As long as he stays focused on the game he has a high ceiling.

 Abdias Carcamo Guard (NY Rens)
Carcamo’s squad didn’t perform to their likened over weekend but he still impressed me with his smoothness at the point. He sees the floor well, plays at his own pace and gets anywhere he wants on the floor. I do think he needs to add a little more effort on the other end of the floor.

Will Amica Guard (Gym Ratz)
Will showed me something during their first outing against WE R 1. The point guard got out into the open floor, made plays and floated to the basket. He has some craftiness in his game combined with some flair.
Travis Gray Guard (Gym Ratz)
Gray is a very athletic wing players and I’m hearing that his father 6’9. During the MDC he showed strides in transition but really impressed with his long range shooting. He hit 3 treys against We r 1, 4 bombs against Brooklyn Rens and another 4 trifecta’s against PSA Cardinals.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Top Performers Part 1

BJ Hall (NY Lightning)

The 7th Grade Division was packed with some fresh faces and usual suspects. Here’s our first look at the top performers from the MDC in Neptune, NJ.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 7th Grade Top Performers Part 1

BJ Hall Forward (NY Lightning)
Posh Alexander won the MVP honors but Hall had to be one of the top prospects in the building. Standing 6’5 Hall is a total matchup nightmare. His guard skills make him deadly inside in terms of scoring in the paint and hitting the face up jumper foul line extended. He finishes through contact, in transition and spends a lot of time at the charity stripe. He’s naturally a wing player and probably will max out about 6’9 which means he could big time look for the college scouts down the road. His best outings were 20 points versus NY Rens and 22 markers against CIA Bounce.

Tyler Young Forward (NY Lightning)
Young was the inside force for the Lightning. The hefty lefty clogged up the lanes and used a soft touch around the cup. He’s wide frame makes it difficult for shot blockers to time his release. This menace on the glass had a 16 point outing against the Rens and 18 markers against Brooklyn Rens. His inside presence was a big piece of their success.
Primo Spears Guard (NY Lightning)
Spears ran the show for the Lightning and made sure the rock got distributed equally. He doesn’t have a flashy handle as most NY guards but he protects the rock and gets into the lane with ease. On the defensive end he guards his position well and is known to force a few turnovers.
Addison Patterson Guard (CIA Bounce)
Bounce has been putting out top notch players the last few years and Patterson is next in line for the Class of 2020. The big guard simply does it all. He scores the ball at will at times (29 points versus NY Lightning) while also adding a ton of assist and rebounds. He stands easily 6’4 therefore he looks over the defense with ease. He’s size, fluid motion and natural feel for the game reminds me of a young Shaun Livingston. This kid has a chance to be a real good one.

Shemar Rathan Mayes Guard (CIA Bounce)
Shemar is a combo guard with an attacking style. He has good ball handling skills, a knack to score and the strength to get through the defense. When he gets out in transition he’s a true load to stop because of his sharp moves and power. He gets the scoring naturally from his brother Florida State star Xavier Rathan-Mayes.
Kobe Elvis Guard (CIA Bounce)
Elvis is a sharp shooter and lit the net up all weekend. He opened the event up with five treys against NY Lightning. Even in transition Kobe is likely to fade to the corner to knock down a trey ball. This kid’s shooting really opened up the offense for CIA Bounce.
Josh Morgan Forward (CIA Bounce)
Morgan’s versatility had my staff calling him Draymond Green all weekend. His frame allows him to turn bully when attacking the basket but he also has the soft touch from 3 point land if you decide to back off him.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Post Players

Eric Dixon (WE R 1)

The Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Division gave us a look at some of the top talent in the region. Our final look at the 8th Grade brings us the power players in the post.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Post Players

Eric Dixon (WE R 1)
He has one of the top rising stocks in the region. Dixon was a man-child on the blocks at MDC. The lefty carved out deep position while punishing defenders with his body and scoring with a feathery touch. The gentle giant is mobile on his toes and maneuvers well for a youngster his size. Look for him to challenge Tariq Ingraham for best big man honors years to come.

Nate Tabor (Metro Celtics)
Tabor will eventually transform to the wing but right now we have him listed in this category. One of his best attributes is how he runs the floor and finishes in transition. Most defenders checking him cannot keep pace end to end. Tabor also uses this quickness to get things done on the baseline and in traffic. He constantly finished inside and spent a lot of time at the charity stripe.

 Adeleye Oyekanium (New Heights)
This stat stuffer is a walking 20 point, 10 rebound guy when he walks on the floor. His combination of high motor and developing skills make him on of the most productive forwards in the region. His range continues to extend beyond the three point line. He has put together one heck of a season this campaign. This was a great pickup for the New Heights organization.

Dejournal Cook (Metro Celtics)
Cook continues to show good athleticism inside the lane and along the baseline. Right now he plays like a high energy guy that can get things done off the glass. I think moving forward he well develop more polished moves so he can either be penciled as a wing or primary post. Right now he’s an athletic face up four.

 Aidan Igiehon (NY Lightning)
The big fella is still in project mode but the Lightning might have something here. Right now he’s more effective on defense by blocking or altering shots while also rebounding. He runs the floor well and seems to have a few more inches in his frame. Once his offense develops the guys on the Nike circuit need to lookout.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Wing Forwards

Seth Lundy (Philly Triple Threat)

The Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Division gave us a look at some of the top talent in the region. Our third stop will be with the top wing forwards that made the trip to Hoop Group Headquarters.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Wing Forwards

Seth Lundy (Philly Triple Threat)
You have to love Lundy’s game on the wing because it’s tailor made for the position. He has developed his ball handling which has helped him attack. He also has the legit size to finish above shot blockers. He pumped in 14 points apiece against Metro Celtics and Team BOS while also tallying 12 markers in their semi-final loss to Team RIO.

Scottie Lewis (Team RIO National)
It wasn’t a high scoring weekend for the versatile wing but he still was very productive. He rebounded well and became the major shot blocker for his squad. On defense he was a hawk on the press by playing the passing lanes or retreating to block the shots of opponents breaking loose. Some players don’t know how to do other things if their shot is off but Lewis isn’t one of those players.

Philip Joseph (NY Rens)
Joseph also stepped up with the departure of Anthony. The most impressive aspect of his game is his improved accuracy on his outside shot. He nailed 4 treys on his way to 22 points on his first game out versus the NJ Shore Shots. This former post player has now become very accustomed to the wing.
Dontae Scott (Philly Triple Threat)
Scott didn’t have his usual dominant weekend but he did wake up against Team RIO in the semi-finals. The lanky forward was in attack mode and was also able to launch some early treys that gave PTT an early cushion. He still remains one of the most intriguing prospects in the region.
Dyondre Dominquez (Team BOS)
Dominquez used his versatility to have a productive weekend. He showed his range during the game against Metro Celtics by nailing 3 treys on his to 25 points. He then came back an outstanding individual performance in their loss to Philly Triple Threat where he lived at the line and finished with 23 markers. He has proven to get busy regardless of the competition.

Jamil Riggins (Philly Triple Threat)
Riggins still battling an injury still managed to get busy against Metro Celtics where he dropped 14 points. Hopefully we get to see him at full strength because when he’s on he can be a crowd pleaser. The southpaw has enormous potential and plays the game with a serious motor.
Jordan McCoy (Team RIO National)
Speaking of injuries McCoy looked to be full strength during the championship game. Jordan played lockdown defense on the wing and also added some scoring with 14 points. He’s the glue player of the squad because he can guard multiple positions and contribute various ways on the offensive end.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Scoring Guards

Bryan "Breezy" Antoine (Team RIO National)

The Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Division gave us a look at some of the top talent in the region. Next we have the top scoring guards at the MDC.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Scoring Guards

Bryan Antoine (Team RIO National)
I heard the RIO head coach call Antoine “Breezy” and I think the name fits perfect because he seems to move like the wind. There’s no player in the country and changes end to end with the effectiveness of Antoine. We all know that he plays above the rim but his ability to finish with either hand makes him virtually unstoppable in transition. If you try to cut off his drives he can hit a step back or open trey with the best of them. He averaged 17 points a game this weekend. His dunk over a Philly Triple Threat defender had to go down as the “Play Of The Weekend”.

Cole Anthony (Team RIO National)
His addition to this unit seems to make things unfair and at times it looked that way. Anthony gives Rio another Bona-fide scorer, ball handler and tough competitor. His outside shooting makes the defense stay honest and opens things up for Ingraham inside. His best outing was a 21 point performance against NY Lightning in which he drained 3 treys. He fits in with this group better than I thought he would.

Joel Brown (CIA Bounce)
Now this kid has the goods. He played either guard spot and destroyed anyone in front of him. He has a Michael Redd type of game and with advanced handles, court vision and scoring ability from all three levels. His coached often went with the isolation or high screen, Brown made him seem brilliant. His torched teams all weekend including a game high 27 points in their final four loss to Metro Celtics. This kid really caught our attention over the weekend.

Fatayn Wesley (Philly Triple Threat)
Wesley continues to have a hot year as did much damage at the MDC. The southpaw plays a Nick Van Exel type of game meaning he has the quickness of a point guard combined with a scorer’s mentality. He can deadly if you back up off him by nailing the trey ball. Wesley proved that he could score in bunches. He had a game high 22 points versus Team BOS including three bombs from 3 point land.

Glenn Anderson (New Heights)
Anderson played in the backcourt with Wynn and had a scoring spark this weekend. He tallied 16 points against both Northeast Finest and CIA Bounce. His quickness in transition helps him to get to the cup quicker than most defenders. His game comes with a unique toughness that can’t be taught.

Lester Quinones (New Heights)
Quinones had things going from deep for New Heights this past weekend. He averaged 14 points a game including 20 point, 4 trey performance in their quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Team RIO National.

Joe Touissant (NY Rens)
With Cole Anthony moving to RIO Touissant was asked to step and he relished the moment. The strong scoring guard attacks the basket with force and can drop buckets on anyone. He hit We R 1 with 20 points in their loss and also had a decent showing in their quarterfinal loss to Philly Triple Threat.
Ricky Mizzoni (CMEK)
The lefty once again lit up the Blue Division for CMEK. He scored a team high 22 points versus NJ Wolfpack, 25 points versus Boston Spartans and 15 markers versus LIPD. The southpaw shows range and an attacking style that knives through the defense.

Kristian Connor (Team BOS)
Athletic guard from New England area will be one to keep an eye on. He's very explosive and will bang it home in traffic. He could be a name to know very soon.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Point Guards

Jalen Gaffney (Team Rio National)

The Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Division gave us a look at some of the top talent in the region. We have a lot to get at in this report so let’s start off with some of the top floor generals that were on display in Neptune.

Basketball Spotlight MDC 8th Grade Top Point Guards

Jalen Gaffney (Team RIO National)
Gaffney is on course to claim his stack as the top floor general in the region. This weekend he showed the ability to operate the well-oiled Team Rio National machine. He delivered precise passes, broke down defenders and finished off plays himself. Finally he would also hurt you if you left him open and the rock rotated his way.

Josh Pierre Louis (Metro Celtics)
Pierre Louis has sprouted up some inches since the last time he played in a Spotlight event. He still has the quickness which he used to get into the lane and finish. He also hit a couple of big treys in their hard fought battle over We R 1. His improved size should help him be an instant impact on the high school level next year.

 Zach Lazanic (Philly Triple Threat)
This point guard reminds me of Mike Nardi from Villanova. I like the way he turns the corner while hitting the gaps and delivering the rock to his teammates. He takes really good care of the rock and seems to make the right decisions. His insertion into this lineup helped this Philly squad head into the right direction.

Amandu Sarnor (Team Rio National)
When Gaffney needed a breather Sarnor came right in and went to work. This is his first year playing the position and he has developed nicely. He uses his strength to hold off defenders trying to pick his pocket. This power also allows him to get into the lane and bully ball handlers on defense. He also showed some improved athleticism on a breakaway dunk.

 Eligah Wynn (New Heights)
Wynn suited up with New Heights for the first time but still played with that Harlem Jets hunger. He got into the seams of the defense and made the defense react. On defense he was an absolute pest the entire 94 feet. He made sure Glenn Anderson and Adeleye Oyekanium ate well the entire weekend.

Jon Jon Wilson (Metro Celtics)
Wilson had his moments when he ran the team well and played good on the ball defense. He has some serious experience playing on this level and uses it well. He showed the ability to breakdown the defense and make good things happen.
Eric Berschadsky (CMEK)
Eric played in the Blue Division but his game shows so much promise I had to mention him in this article. He’s capable of getting anywhere he wants on the floor and has good court vision and a mean ratchet if left open. He plays the game with an air of confidence. You will be seeing this name again on the NJ high school scene.

Diary Of A Baller: James "Buckets" Bishop (Baltimore, MD) Entry #6

What’s Up Basketball Spotlight World,

It’s James Bishop again letting you know how my week went.

On Monday I went to school and it was a usual day. The good thing about today was my brother was off from work and was able to work out my God brother and I. We did skill work for an hour and a half and then got up some shots for the last hour. Afterwards we went to Subway to eat before going home to do my physical workout.

Tuesday was a special day because I was out of school unexpectedly and loved it lol. So I stayed home and went to work out at Dru Hill from 10 to 12. Then I got lunch and chilled until my BNBL game at 6:00 pm. We won our game in overtime and it was a pretty cool because I had a chance to play in my hometown which is rare because we travel so much. Later I ran two miles then played NBA 2K against my brother. He got the best of me tonight but I will get revenge in the tomorrow.

Wednesday was a long day at school. I did a lot of studying while preparing to take SAT. After school I waited for my God brother to come and scoop me for workouts. We got two hours in and then I went home to work on my ball handling. I was extra tired this night so there was no TV or game for me. I just ate, showered and went to sleep.

On Thursday I went to school and had a scrimmage after school with my BMF teammates. We played against the 16U and 17U in preparation for the NYBL this coming weekend. The next morning we hit the road to Tennessee, it was a long 8 hour drive.

Saturday we had a good day at the NYBL as we went 3-0. I played well and did a good job getting everyone involved until it was time for me to takeover. The only thing that is important to me is getting the win. I could care less about the stats.

Sunday we went 1-1. We won the first game but lost the second after playing back to back. It kind of sucked because the other team was a little fresher. But we can’t have any excuses its back to the lab. I have to be better conditioned for times like this. On the way home I got some pretty good news, I was invited to the Fab Frosh All American Camp.

See You Guys Next Week
