Moody Park MS Summer League Championship Game Recap: PBA #167 Holds On For Victory!

PBA #167 Squad and MVP Rick Bailey

Moody Park MS Summer League wrapped up last night and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. First we watched the All Star game then we took a look at the championship matchup as PBA #167 defeated Blessed 41-39. Here’s are the players that impressed us in the finals.

Moody Park MS Summer League Championship Top Performers

MVP- Ricky Bailey Forward (PBA #167)- Bailey was like Bo Outlaw, grabbing rebounds and getting put backs. He runs the floor well for a big forward and understands that he does his best under the basket. In the closing minutes of the game he stepped to the free throw line and knocked it down. This helped his team get the crown and give him MVP honors.

Donovan Ryland Guard (PBA #167)- This point guard really impressed me with his play making ability and the way he took care of the rock. He has a low dribble and a strong frame that makes it difficult to strip him. Ryland picked his game up when things got tight by also scoring the pill. Next fall some high school coach is getting a nice addition to his program with Ryland.

J’Ayir Brown Guard (PBA #167)- While many players love the offensive end Brown locks down on defense. He moves his feet very well and uses his strength to control the ball handler. On offense he has some scoring pop especially when driving hard to the right side of the lane. His play and contributions were also worthy MVP honors.

Reggie James Forward (Blessed)- James is one of the top rising 9th Graders in the Mercer County area. He’s blessed with good speed, size and an improving handle. James can score attacking, on put backs and excels in transition. He heated up in the scoring column and made some other good plays to help his team get back into the contest.

Roderick Massenat Forward (Blesssed)- Massenat arrived at right before halftime and immediately made his presence felt. He plays with a good burst of energy while combining some good off the dribble moves. He has a nice floater and shows some range even though he has a low release right now. He’s very active around the floor and seems to have a chance to be a good prospect down the road.

Justin Galea Guard (Blessed)- Galea is reclassifying into the Class of 2019 which should be a good move. The point guard made good decisions while running the point. He picked his spots to attack while using the pick and roll. I like how he distributes the rock and also scores the rock when it's necessary.

Moody Park MS Summer League All Star Game Recap!

Moody Park All Star Top Peformers

The Moody Park Summer League wrapped and Basketball Spotlight was in the building. First we took a look at the All Star Game which didn’t include the players that were playing in the championship game.

Moody Park Summer League MS All Star Game Top Performers

MVP- Jacquay Mendez Forward (Green Squad)- Mendez took home the MVP honors while playing an all-around game. He rebounded, scored and played good defense. He has a high motor and is willing to sacrifice his body and game for his team’s success. I like his size and also heard he excels in the world of football and baseball so his future seems very bright.

Shemar Robinson Guard (Green Squad)- If I had the vote for MVP Robinson would have taken home the MVP award. This guard simply played at the different speed then his peers in this contest. He has lightning speed and an array of dribbling moves that allows him to cruise into the lane. Robinson had some big time finishes at the tin but really impressed me with his court vision. When he drove down the lane he was eager to hit moving teammates on point. At times he gave the crowd a treat by putting some mustard of his passes.

Jordan Livingston Guard (Gray Team)- The Gray team fell behind big early then Livingston stepped up and took over. First he displayed his outside shooting by draining treys from around the arc, next he broke defenders with a smooth crossover that allowed him to finish at the cup. He not the quickest guard in the world but his craftiness allows him to get anywhere on the floor. On the other side of the ball he will need to improve his foot speed to play man to man defense.

Yeshua Powe Guard (Gray Team)- Powe is totally wired to score. He has a good mid-range shot but can also stretch it out to the 3 point line. Once he got going he scored in bunches. I like the wiggle he shows and toughness to score in traffic. He reminds me of Miles Simon the former star from the University of Arizona.

Cartier Bowman Forward (Green Team)- Bowman benefitted well from Robinson’s penetration. He showed good hands when catching the rock and finished well at the cup. He’s a good athlete and has good length. I also like the motor he possesses when playing on the floor. On defense he showed some shot blocking ability and rebounded the pill.

Ijon Rasberry Forward (Gray Team)- I really believe this kid has a chance to make a name. Right now he’s more prospect than player but that could all change in a few years. He has good size and tries to handle the rock but it appears awkward because he doesn’t have control of his body yet. While some spectators found this comical I imagined how he would look once he good everything together.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Virginia and Georgia Players Line Up For Future Phenom Camp!

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp continues to grow as big time commitments have come from the Virginia and Georgia areas. They players are new to the Spotlight scene and are eager to show they can handle the best. Here are the group of players that are ready to tangle on August 23rd and 24th in District Heights, MD.

LeonTre Bauley – Class of 2019: Just look at the picture – your first thought is that this is a grown man; your second may be what he is doing on Bball Spotlight. We THOUGHT you should know that Bauley is a 7th grader, age 14 and he wears a size 17 shoe. One of the most imposing physical specimens in the class of 2019 at 6’7 he can play all 3 front court positions. His favorite player is Lebron James and he wants to be able to play any position and from what we have seen this may be in his cards prior to entering high school. Besides being a complete scorer Bauley shows great court vision and works the pass well off the dribble and the catch. We are looking at a future 6’10+ multi-dimensional combo forward; who can handle, score, shoot, and defend already. What’s unreal about this player is that he has only been playing for 2 years and is still learning the nuances of game; yet having high level success. Bauley doesn’t even know how good he is and is actually focused on becoming an engineer and not a NBA player. Once you see him play on August 23rd and 24th you will HOPE Bauley never picks up a ball again as he undoubtedly is a star of the future.

Alvonte Lawton – Class of 2019: Built like a cannon ball Lawton is powerful and likens to a in stature and style of play to Ty Lawson ironically. Not as quick and at the same juncture maybe just as good a scorer; but not penetrator. Lawton gets the job done; with a very deep group of point guards attending the Phenom Camp on August 23rd and 24th Lawton is not a household name, but he has all the tools to challenge and if taken lightly he will light it up. He dropped team/game high 28-points from the lead guard position in Memphis a few weeks ago while contributing on the boards as well as running the team. Tough and with a solid motor he is a relentless penetrator that likes contact and challenges his defender and bigs with the “big chip on his shoulder” that he wants someone to try and knockoff.

Jamari Smith - Class of 2020: Already standing 6’0 Smith is extremely athletic and likes to initiate contact when attacking. A certified scoring one Smith consistently puts up 20+ ppg in games vs elite competition and against lesser talent has been known to drop in 30 to 40 on occasion – just last week in the 6th grade nationals Smith punished opponents with a 41-point effort leading his squad to a 74-61 victory in bracket play. Excellent 3-point shooter Smith is at his best in the transition game where he will does what may be is strongest attribute; dribble penetration to the hole. Going to the basket it’s tough to stop Jamari as his frame, length, and physical nature are advanced for this level. Coming from a small market Smith has not received the recognition that he would if he played in a major basketball city. That all ends August 23rd & 24th and Jamari come to the Spotlight to claim what he believes is his birthright; a spot as one of the top players in the country.

Antwon Barnett – Class of 2020: From Montgomery, Alabama they feed and grow them a little different down there. Long arms and legs Barnett covers a lot of space very quickly on the floor and is a big-time defensive stopper as well as a help side defender. He knows how to use the tools that he has and as member of the 2020 class standing 6’2 he can guard 4 and against some teams all 5 positions. A solid perimeter shooter out to 18-feet he knows his game and maximizes it well. Versatile enough to handle the ball vs pressure his attack game is played well above the rim already. This is the type of player you typically don’t hear about until High School as his skill projections will make him a prototypical combo forward with ball skills; this is the beauty of his attendance at the Phenom Camp as defined by its name on August 23rd & 24th America will see the future.

Tyjavious Bedgood – Class of 2020: Country strong and gigantic at age 12; the nephew of former NBA All-Star and Champion Ben Wallace has a mom who stands over 6’4 and he is already 6’6 with a big body and weight barring frame. So long and thick he physically beats you up every possession; and he enjoys it. He projects to reach 6’9 -6’11, so 7’ isn’t out of the question and his growth pattern does nothing to make you doubt as he still has two more years of Middle School ball. Right now like his Uncle he dominates both glasses as a rebounder, and blocks shots like it’s his hobby. He fills lanes and runs the floor like a gazelle; the only thing that is missing is a sophisticated post game – right now the Shaq like power game will be unstoppable by most; once its developed they may not be an answer. If you do not like physical basketball and tough post play; the Spotlight Camp on August 23rd & 24th may not be the right place for you because Bedgood knows no other way to play.

Keonte White – Class of 2020: The ultimate rim protector; a quick leaper with an equally fast second jump White blocks shots at an extremely high rate. It is unfair when the 6’4 forward is used defensively on the perimeter; White guards everyone and anywhere on the court can guard in space up to 94-feet. Keonte is raw offensively but has next level tools and a high motor and passion for the game. Another player at this young age with tremendous tools; these are the kids that become stars at the next level all the time. His passion and love also say so as he dreams of attending Syracuse; how ironic giving his physical attributes – he already looks and plays like a young Jerami Grant and we mean middle school Grant not Syracuse Grant. Put him on the list; 6’4, 12-years old, physical specimen…scary – and yes, he will be at Spotlight Camp waiting for anyone and everyone.

Keandre Lambert – Class of 2020: One of the top players in the Va. Beach area; Lambert is a knockdown shooter who specializes in the 3-point shot. Lambert has had some very impressive scoring outburst, and with his length he is able to score and shoot over opponents. His tools allow him to be a factor on both ends and he combines these tools to be a scorer and not just a jumper shooter. His 7 3’s in a game exemplify his skillset as a wing guard; the movement to the 2-guard would further increase his value and as he develop this will be his likely position.

Spotlight Video Feature: Quinerly On Fire In Orlando!

Jahvon Quinerly aka Inferno gave the crowd in Orlando a taste of what we seen on a regular. The fluid combo guard scores like we breathe and has improved his play making skills. His play helped Team IZOD reach the AAU championship game. This kid has put together one of the best seasons in Spotlight history and is a favorite to win player of the year. He’s definitely ready for the high school level of basketball.

Spotlight Video Feature: Atiba Taylor Getting Busy At Nationals

Atiba Taylor Jr. has been a national name on the Spotlight circuit for years. Recently he ran the show for Team IZOD aka Supreme team as they reached their second national game title in a row. Diary Of A Baller: Cameron "The Prince" Reddish (Norristown, PA) Entry #9

Cameron "The Prince" Reddish

This AAU season and this weekend was great. Playing up was a gratifying experience and I appreciate the opportunity. Down at Live in AC, we won all of our games up until the final four. We played team takeover; the game was back in forth and a nail bitter, the game went into double overtime. In the second overtime they started to pull away and we took a very tough loss. Then at Elevate Hoops at Competitive Edge Sports we lost in the championship to We R 1. They took an early lead that we almost overcame at the end but we ran out of gas.

It was a rough end to the season. But now it's time to get in the gym and get better, stronger, and faster to prepare for this year’s upcoming high school season. I'm excited to start the season, I feel we can win the league and the state title. Should be a good season. Time to get back on my grind! Talk to y'all next week.

Diary Of A Baller: Cameron "The Prince Reddish" (Norristown, PA) Entry #8

Cameron "The Prince" Reddish

What a fun week and weekend this was! I had an opportunity to play with the 9th grade Team Final, and of course I took it. We were at PhillyU and Competitive Edge Sports for a huge tournament with college coaches watching. We played well as a group and was able to pull out a championship win over DC Thunder. I played well with them; I even got interviewed a couple times by a couple scouts that were there watching. Then right after that we played again at Spookynook where we played in the 16U bracket. We took a tough loss and were then unable to win the entire thing. But still was a great experience and great exposure. I'm now on my way to Atlantic City for "Live in AC" with the 9th graders again.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Future Phenom Camp Seeing Double!

Mitchell Twins

In Superman comics there's a topsy-turvy place known as Bizarro World. Everything works backward there: Good is bad, bad is good, etc. Bizarro World has a lot in common with youth basketball. Many basketball savants often wondered if the two big men, instantly dubbed the "Mitchell Twins," could work together. The answer, thus far, is that they work together like gangbusters. Everyone wants “size” but when the Mitchell Twins stepped into the national spotlight they then questioned if their skill sets could work together – backwards we know, the answer: absolutely!

Mahkel & Makhi have taken the class by storm and have displayed the ability to control games for long stretches. They recently lead their DC Premier team to a Top 10 finish in the country; displaying the strength and determination to finish in the paint, over and through contact - as well; this dynamic duo who each stand 6’7; has also shown the skills to step out on the perimeter and put the ball on the floor while also being able to catch and shoot, work off the bounce, and raise up and shoot over defenders. Their combination length and advanced ball handling and overall skill set at times have overwhelmed opponents; and they both are looking to do more of the same at the Future Phenom Camp.

Longtime attendees of the Basketball Spotlight Tournaments; Mahkel and Makhi will step into Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp as separate entities for the first time; potentially even battling each other for national prominence. One thing is for certain and two things are for sure, the Mitchell twins are relishing the opportunity to show the country their vast and immense skill set. Both play in a very structured system and many have not seen the full scope of what these two high end and versatile elite players can truly do – on August 23rd and 24th everyone will see and opponents will find out first hand all the tools these two possess.

One national scout stated that “these players have the most pro potential in the class of 2019”; with all top players in attendance the Mitchells twins are looking to place an all out assault the national ranking boards. Can anyone stop them or will we all be witnesses as the Mitchell Twins takeover the 2019 class? This is a situation where it’s better to not come at all if you plan to come soft – if you can handle this type of ball and truly want to play against two of the best in America and more who can also make this claim – be at the Future Phenom Camp; because the Mitchell Twins will be, and they’ll be waiting for you.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Isaiah Kennedy Is Ready Too Rumble!

Isaiah Kennedy (Dayton, OH)

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp reached out to Ohio as Isaiah Kennedy of Dayton has decided to bring his talent to Districts Heights, MD. The rising 7th grade combo guard has shown his skills all around the country including John Lucas Camp. The big bodies guard can see the floor well and shows some good instinct when making plays. He has a savvy handle while also using a nice floater among other scoring techniques. Now he has the chance to show that he handle the load against the best in the country.

"Isaiah seeks the opportunity to test his skills among the nations top young talent. He is a gym rat who works daily on his game. He's relatively new to the AAU scene (two years) but is ranked among the Top 10 players in Ohio. Now he is hungry to compete against the best in America" said his father.

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp is scheduled for August 23rd and 24th. This event is certified hot and features the top middle school basketball players in the country. Stay tuned as Basketball Spotlight brings you some of the top from around the country headed the show of the summer.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Crane Coming To Make A Name!

Kaleb Crane (Lafayette, LA)

Lafayette, Louisiana is a long way from Maryland but Kaleb Crane has something to prove. The Class of 2020 point guard has entered the Future Phenom Camp to let his game be seen by the world. During the season he rocked with Acadiana Redhawks and averaged 14 markers a game. His father Aundray thinks the Future Phenom Camp is the place for Kaleb. “He’s anxious to attend Future Phenom Camp to show that he can compete on the same level as some of the kids that are being discussed in his age. The difference is they have been seen and he hasn’t. This is his opportunity!!!” he finished.

Crane will be the first player hailing from Louisiana to lace them up at a Spotlight event. I hope he’s ready to battle some of the top ballers in the United States. Stay tuned as Basketball Spotlight will keep you posted on the other top players checking in around the USA. Don’t forget to register for your spot for the Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp slated for August 23rd and 24th in District Heights, MD.

Basketball Spotlight Alums Shine On Nike's Biggest Stage!

Isaiah Briscoe (Playaz)

Basketball Spotlight Alums were in the building for the Nike Peach Jam on ESPN as the powerhouse Playaz aka “The Yankees” brought the championship back to New Jersey. Here’s what we thought after we watched the games on the tube.

Top Performers

Isaiah Briscoe Guard (Playaz)- Briscoe seemed to be on a mission all season and reached pay dirt by leading his boys to the crown. He dictated the pace and did whatever he wanted on the floor. During the semifinals he danced along the baseline while hurting the back of Scan's zone. In the finals he really turned up and showed all the facets of his game. He carried defenders to the rack, scored the pill and set up teammates. He also has the amazing instinct of drawing fouls on defenders. I also hit the glass to the tune of 12 caroms. He ended the game close to the triple double with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 7 dimes. He might not be listed as the top prospect in the country but he definitely was by far the best player in America this summer hands down.

Temple Gibbs Guard (Playaz)- Gibbs was a great addition to the Playaz squad. He did a good job of scoring alongside Briscoe. His toughness stood out as he scored in traffic and hurt the defense with his outside touch. Gibbs shows a mature game which might come from having two division one brothers. He was instant offense for the Playaz all weekend. His stock really shot high after playing on the EYBL circuit.

Eli Cain Guard (Playaz)- Cain came up big on championship Sunday. He attacked the Scan zone and used a floater to score over their huge front line. He also helped with the ball handling in the back court. He filled the role as the third scorer and did a great job. He’s came a long way from his SJ Blitz days.

Trevon Duval Guard (Playaz)- The baby of the bunch (rising sophomore) proved to be worthy of his lofty rankings. He’s explosive when attacking the tin including catching a big follow up dunk. He also showed touch from the outside and just good composure playing on a stage this big. This kid has tremendous break down ability and looks to be a big time prospect.

Tyus Battle Guard (Team Scan)- Battle capped a sparking Peach Jam week with a strong performance in the semi-finals. He proved to the scouts that he is indeed an outside shooter by knocking four 4 treys. His scoring helped Team Scan climb back in the game after falling behind the Playaz huge at halftime. Word from the scouts is that his performance this week should shoot him up the rankings.

Bryce Aikens Guard (Team Scan)- Aikens woke Scan in the second half. He drove the lane and scored or made plays from his teammates. He also was a beast in transition he pushed the rock and helped them get some easy buckets. The commentators said that he needed to step up and he did. I has a very solid season with this bunch.

Note: There were other top performers in this event but he just highlighted the players that played in the Basketball Spotlight events.

USBA Nationals Top Performers Part 1

Jamah'n Harvey (Fayetteville Elite)

The USBA Nationals pool play kicked off and Basketball Spotlight was in South Carolina for the action. Here’s a few players that caught our attention since we been here.

USBA Nationals Top Performers

Jamah’n Harvey Forward (Fayetteville Elite)- Harvey showed the most versatility in the gym by putting in work on the blocks and stepping out to bury the trey. He’s long, rangy and bouncy while having the look of a good prospect down the road. When National Select made their run he answered the bell by scoring the pill and grabbing key boards.

Tyron George Guard (Fayetteville Elite)- George provided the scoring at the combo guard spot. He uses his body to lean into shot blockers before converting. He also will drain the outside shot when the ball is rotated his way. He has a natural scoring feel for the game and showed it today when I watched him get busy.

Tatton Jones Guard (Fayetteville Elite)- Jones is a glue player and shows the versatility of a Scottie Pippen. On offense he made some good passes, scored in transition and converted in the half court set. On defense he can play the passing lanes, rebound out of position and personally start the fast break. He affects the game without dominating the pill.

Issac Bonds Guard (Fayetteville Elite)- Bonds is the hired outside shooter for this Carolina bunch. He spotted up from deep behind the 3 point line and made National Select pay. He knows his roll and cherishes it to help his team get the victory.

Marquise Walker Guard (National Select)- National Select fell behind big early and Walker woke up and found his stroke. The youngster from Chi-Town knocked down four straight treys from NBA range and brought his team all the way back. In transition he was a monster showing supreme body control and finishing like a true lead guard. He finished the contest with a game high 37 points in the loss.

AJ Hoggard Guard (National Select)- Hoggard made some good plays playing alongside Walker. He showed several aspects of his games including passing and scoring. He also had to help inside with his team’s lack of overall size. A big turning point in the game came when he fouled out. Walker was left as the primary ball handler and scorer.

Tyrese Jenkins Forward (National Select)- Jenkins showed to be light on his feet and good touch around the rim. He’s been running the floor better these days and also showed some range out to the 3 point land. He has the size and the game to be a name in this class to watch.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: (J5) Striving For Future Phenom Camp!

Jordan McPhatter (North Carolina)

Jordan (J5) McPhatter has been a nationally known commodity for years and this spark plug is just as dangerous in 2014 as he has been in past years if not more - in the open court and in one on one set’s; there wasn’t anyone he can’t beat off the dribble. His jumper creates even more problems that allow him to operate in space, as his range extends well beyond the 3-point stripe. With the ball on a string J5 will make himself look good while making his defender look bad; not a showboat flyer simply a player who plays with a productive flair that gets the job done.

J5 is not your prototypical lead guard; though he is exceptional in this role as well, J5 can flat out get it as scorer and puts constant pressure on his man and on the defense with the pass or penetration. He may be small but no player plays with a bigger heart or chip on his shoulder, one of the most respected ball players in the class of 2020 J5 will be coming to the Spotlight to show he should still be in the conversation not as the top PG but as one of the nation’s best players. This is another example in another class, this time 2020, of the type of talent that will be stepping onto the court at the Future Phenom Basketball Spotlight Camp August 23rd and 24th; without question there will be no breaks or games off all weekend long as each and every player in attendance possess a clear and present danger to their opponent.

Diary Of A Baller: Cameron "The Prince" Reddish (Norristown, PA) Entry #7

Cameron Reddish Getting Busy

Wow! This week was FUN and competitive. Nationals was a great experience, and we had a great run. We were able to play other top teams and top players in the country and see what they were actually made of. There were lots of people down there, coaches, players, parents, and scouts. Us as a whole, Team Final, played hard and played together to get wins. But eventually we ran out of gas at the end to end up losing to Each One Teach One. They were a tough team, and they had stellar guard play but they were definitely beatable. But all in all it was a great run and experience and I appreciate the opportunity. Now I'm on my way back home to play with the 9th grade Team Final. I'll talk to y'all soon.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: The Return Of The Mack!

BJ Mack (North Carolina)

Few players in the country have had as good of a breakout season as Brian “BJ” Mack; Mack made it a point to step onto the national stage and play with and against the best in the country. A high volume producer in the NYBL – he received 1st Team All NYBL, Mack was also selected and played for USA National Select, playing with a group that played up successfully against players two grades above his own, and finally Mack led his is AAU club Team United to a top 20 finish nationally in his first year with the club.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Jakhary Towns Joins Future Phenom Camp!

Jakhary Running The Town!

When you are talking about top to bottom talent no camp in the country has a talent pool as deep as the upcoming Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp; at the 3rd grade level attending out of Michigan will be Jakhary Towns. Towns is a smooth as silk shooting guard with a sweet stroke, quick release and solid range beyond the 3-point stripe. A combo guard who can also handle the lead spot; Towns controls the tempo and can breakdown a defender off the dribble and finish with the score or the pass – as he is as unselfish as they come. With an advanced IQ Towns thinks the game very well, identifying his own mismatches as well as that of his teammate. With the ability to take over the game for long stretches he can carry the team as a high end scorer - but becomes very hard to guard; when he attracts the double team beats it and finds the open teammate.

We really like the frame and body make even at this young age as we can see already what he is going to be – in the truest sense, he is going to be a problem for many years to come; a problem that many are not going to be able to solve. If you are not a problem solver the Spotlight may not be the right place for you August 23rd and 24th ~ those who are ready Towns will be waiting, see him in action below.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Balsa Koprivica Brings Size To Future Phenom Camp!

Balsa Koprivica (Team Florida)

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp just got a lot bigger – try 6’10 bigger. Just announced is the attendance of nationally known Balsa Koprivica - at 6’10, 235lbs Balsa is far from your traditional back to the basket post player. Balsa runs the floor exceptionally well for his size and his large soft hands catch anything thrown in his direction. His ability to handle the rock on the perimeter combined with his soft shooting touch clearly indicates that he will be able to step out and easily play away from the basket as a face up four or even a wing at the next level. Already displaying a solid stroke with 3-point range he operates equally as well of the catch and off the bounce.

The son of a former Olympian; his dad play against the original Dream Team in 1992, Koprovica has a keen sense for how to read cutters and double team and his overall basketball IQ is well beyond his years. A sure fire Division I player the only question that remains is how high; his size and skill set clearly already translate two levels up – he will only get bigger, stronger, and better. At times this year Balsa has been completely unstoppable, finishing of the pick and pop, from behind the arch, and over defenders with powerful drop step dunks. With a stellar line-up that already boast some the best of the nation’s top perimeter players; possibly the biggest and best big man will be on the floor August 23rd & 24th – this camp is not for the faint of heart, Koprovica has given new meaning to the phase “come big or don’t come at all”. ;

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Hoggard Hungry For Future Phenom Camp!

AJ's Anxious To Eat Competition!

With the camp attendees slowly being announced – we couldn’t keep this a secret any longer, the 2019 point guard class is one that the country is paying special attention to – with national commitment from players such as Marquise Walker and Jeremiah Francis; another unanimous top ranked point guard who appears on every national ranking board has joined the fray. Enter AJ Hoggard possibly the best passing lead guard in the nation; those who can’t appreciate the body of work this young man has put together over the years simply do not know basketball. Hoggard plays the game in fast-forward, seeing and creating opportunities for himself and other 3 movements ahead. Risky? Not with the ball in AJ hands, he makes the impossible look easy as he delivers dimes and ask for change – Hoggard is your proverbial flashlight in a dark alley.

The truest type of PG, pass first, pass second, and third. But please understand he gives you a lot more than that, an underrated finisher he contorts his body and spins the pill in ways that can only attributed to many hours with the ball in the gym. An underrated jump shooter, he can space the floor and hurt you if left open. A coach on the floor and coming off a phenomenal performance with USA National Select, Hoggard steps into the Spotlight with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove – this doesn’t bode well for the competition. In what is shaping up to be a very special set of battles within battles August 23rd & 24th will pit the very best against the very best in epic individual showdowns that will be talked about for years to come.

Diary Of A Baller: Cameron "The Prince" Reddish (Norristown, PA) Entry #6

Cameron "The Prince" Reddish

This week was a chill week... Finally. I'm in Orlando, Florida for vacation with my family. Even though I am on vacation, I am still going to the courts and working out and getting shots up. I was able to get a hook up from my coach/trainer to a gym nearby to get lots of shots up and working out. I just got back from working out at OHoops; the workout was fantastic. Another highlight of the workout was that Kelly Olynx and Phil Prestly from the Boston Celtics were also in the gym working out.

But nationals is only a couple days away; and I'm prepared and excited to go. Time to make a run for the championship. Until then, I'll talk to y'all later.

Peace!

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Sanders Making The Trip To Future Phenom Camp!

Bryan Sanders (Team Florida)

They don’t come any tougher then Team Florida’s Bryan Sanders; just committed to the Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp – Sanders just adds to the gauntlet of top guards at the premier event of the summer. There is no player at his position with a stronger frame; physically imposing his tools and skill set are scary good as well. He is explosive; his transition package is one of the best either with the ball in his hands on as a finisher. His is a player who wants to win and will run through a brick wall to do so. A deceptively adept handle will put defenders on their toes if not that backs; he will make an impact on both boards often pushing directly off a defensive rebound – when he switches to his scoring mode he can dominate at the two spot also.

Sanders uses his mid-range package combined with his pull-up game to pressure defenses and his three point range to space the court for future drives to the basket. Underrated as a defender he flat out puts up numbers on that side of the ball too not just as a on ball defender but also by playing the passing lanes. Bottom-line Bryan has shown himself to be one of the most complete and versatile players in the 2019 and he plans on bring his entire tool box to the Spotlight so that he can go to work on the competition. The Future Phenom Camp doesn’t offer any of its players workman comp; so anyone in attendance better bring their hardhat and lunch pail on August 23rd & 24th

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Future Phenom Camp Goes International!

Isaiah Moseley

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp class of 2019 group will not just have the best the United States has to offer – with the confirmation of Canada’s Isaiah Moseley Spotlight has gone International. One of the nation’s best scoring combo guard Moseley flat out get the job done against anyone put in front of him. A unique combination of speed, strength, and skill he is a threat on any angle on the court – effective on the baseline and on straight-line drive from the wing or top of the key; too much space will result in a quick trigger jumper that is done with excellent elevation for this level. Excellent at the basket even with contact, he will make you pay there or at the foul line with an excellent natural stoke; as a two he is your proto-type versatile scoring, guards the position – can be considered a stopper, and can also move to the lead position and handle primary duties.

Moseley is a known member of the Canadian Olympic training group and this is apparent each time you see him pick up a ball. As good as he is now, his potential is off the charts as he continues to develop - this is no consolation for August 23rd & 24th attendee to the Spotlight Camp as Moseley isn’t coming to prove his is the best in Canada; he is coming to prove he is the best in this country too, we wonder if anyone can stop him!

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Pina Primed For Future Phenom Camp!

Xavier Pina (WE R 1)

Xavier Pina has made a name for himself during this Spotlight season. He’s a natural scorer with a sweet stroke which he showed when he went for 33 points during the AC Showcase. His skills and play earned him an invite to the Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp. His father Stephen feels that going to the Future Phenom Camp, “The camp gives Xavier an opportunity to learn from great teachers and counselors. Further, giving Xavier a platform to play on and against the top players in the country is why we do it. As a parent, we have different methods of teaching. I chose sports as a teaching method. Being a student athlete will teach Xavier dedication, responsibility, time management, how to win and lose and how to handle each with grace and humility. This has been a special year for X and it started with his first write up on Basketball Spotlight. We, as a family are excited to see Xavier play in the Future Phenom Camp” said Stephen.

Stephen is not the only person that’s excited for Xavier making the trip to Maryland. His coach Kevin Murray also thinks it’s a good look for Pina. “Xavier has really come into his own this year. I always knew what he could do but to see him on the Bballspotlight circuit playing with confidence and passion makes my job worth it. X is a good player but a great kid. He works hard and wants to get better. Having X attend the Future Phenom Camp is a testament to his hard work and the love he has for the game and his team” he finished. Stay tuned as Basketball Spotlight brings you more top players headed to District Heights, Maryland for the Future Phenom Camp August 23rd and 24th.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Point Guard Battle To Be Settled At Future Phenom Camp!

Knasir "Dug" McDaniel

Point guards. They are the quarterbacks on the basketball court, handling the ball, dishing it off, and they are frequently relied on to make the smart decisions. Not to discount other positions–each one has its own importance–but the point guard is arguably the most significant player on the floor. At the upcoming Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp all the nation’s top players at this position will be in the building; the National Battle for the at this position likely will directly affect the national board hierarchy.

This undoubtedly will be one of the most intense position battles of the camp and in the country in the class of 2022. Without further ado, please meet the Spotlights confirmed camp attendees:

Knasir “Dug” McDaniel (DC) – No one in the country is quicker with the ball baseline to baseline. A true pass first PG who can score with the best out there when required. Uncontainable in space, doesn’t get trapped and never gives up the dribble. Tough as nails with big time national experience there is nothing he hasn’t seen, fearless competitor that can hurt you in many ways. Range extends beyond the 3-point line and has a devastating mid-range package especially in the paint.

Sonny Johnson (OH) – Textbook stroke with range, next level handle, killer instincts, tremendous size for the position and a next level IQ. Can score at all 3 levels using a diverse skill set, guards the position – great physical tool, length is a strong attribute. Johnson is hungry to prove he deserves to be in the conversation not only as the best PG; he wants the #1 spot.
Josiah Johnson (CA) – West Coast super star with an east coast game; one would never guess he is from California. Constantly in attack mode he is the consummate leader – he put pressure on his teammates to compete at a high level, coach on the floor and devastates his opponents with his scoring prowess. Creates space with great finishing ability coupled with big time range on his jump shot, which is a actually a jump shot at this stage. Another mechanically strong shooter who has a great core and gets to the spots he wants to on the floor. Super tough mentally, physically, and with his skill set plays hard every possession.

Jaden Johnson (MD) – This conversation cannot be had without mentioning the starting PG and leading scorer of the two time and defending national champion Maryland’s Finest. Going for a unprecedented 3rd straight title, currently no one on the country actively playing can make that claim if accomplished. With Johnson at the helm and the #1 seed, they are the favorite to do so; Johnson is a multi-category contributor who willing steps up and takes the other team’s best player regardless of position as typically shuts them down. Offensively he does what he pleases, gets where he wants to, and finishes on each level along the way. Uses his size like a seasoned veteran and knocks down jumpers from all over the floor and with range. One of the most complete players in the country without question.

Sammy Scott (MD) – Maybe the best scorer out of the bunch, everything is quick – small and compact you simply do not steal the ball from him. Tough as nails he can get to any spot on the floor he wants and can finish without issue even against size. Very smart at reading angles and creating scoring space for himself and for setting up his teammates – can carry the offensive load on any night while still making sure his teammates are involved, think Chris Paul/Isaiah Thomas; a rare and special talent has to be included in this discussion, no one better forget about Scott or he will be sitting in the #1 spot.
