Basketball Spotlight wanted to make a splash on our first trip to Maryland so we decided to host the DMV Takeover all under one roof. That’s right DMV Takeover will take place March 8th and 9th in the new renovated NEW 24 facility. This facility features 10 full courts which will give us a very exciting atmosphere. Basketball Spotlight Alums Towns Jr. And Whitehead Headed To McDonald's Game!

The McDonald All American Game remains one of the highest honors a high school basketball player could achieve. Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate two alums, Karl Towns Jr. and Isaiah Whitehead for being selected to the 2014 game in Chicago, Illinois.

Karl Towns Jr.

Karl Towns Jr. spent most of his grammar school career playing up in age but made stops at Basketball Spotlight with Team NJABC. He also performed in showcase events such as the Elite 80 Expo and the J.E.M. All Star Classic. He's having a stellar high school career including a state title and recently verbally committed to the University of Kentucky.

Isaiah Whitehead

Isaiah Whitehead starred on the Spotlight as an 8th Grader while leading Juice All Stars to the “Team Of The Year” and earning Player Of The Year Honors. He played on the Spotlight circuit and in the J.E.M. All Star Classic. The Brooklyn native kept the Lincoln high school tradition going by helping them win another City Championship. Next year he will be attending Seton Hall University.

Basketball Spotlight is extremely proud of these two youngsters and wish them the best for the rest of their basketball careers.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 has a new #1 team and a new member. The Clash For The Cup is around the corner so this probably will shake some things up.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team IZOD: IZOD moves into the #1 spot and should be ready to defend their ranking at the Clash next weekend.

2. Team Glory: TG won’t be coming to the Clash but they are on tap for the DMV Takeover. This bunch always brings the noise.

3. Team DEMI: After a final four run at the Tip Off Classic, Team DEMI returns to the Clash to try and win it all.

4. On Point Rens: This scrappy bunch will be back on the Spotlight circuit soon and ready to rock. They are a team that many others don’t want to see.

5. Milbank: “The Bank” won the Blue Division championship at the Tip Off Classic. Maybe we can get them to take the ride down to the DMV Takeover.

6. EYSC Elite: The Pennsylvania boys return to Spotlight ready to have a better showing than the Tip Off Classic.

7. Team Scan: Team Scan will be absent from the Clash For The Cup but I know we will see them very soon.

8. Team Takeover (Gorham): These boys will be returning to action very soon. They are already locked into the DMV Takeover but they might make an appearance at the Clash.

9. NBA: Nations Basketball Academy has been off the our radar this season hopefully we will see them soon.

10. Team Final: Team Final will have their shot to stay in the Top 10 after their showing at the Clash.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 had a little moment but still has the same #1 squad. The Clash For The Cup will give teams a chance to move up the ladder.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team RIO National: RIO cruised through the MLK Classic and remains at our #1 spot. They are still the most dominant team in the region and will be facing a greater challenge at the Clash For The Cup.

2. Team Takeover: TT came up short in the finals of the 6th Man Warriors MLK Classic against the host. I still think they have an outside shot of winning the Clash For The Cup.

3. Rens: The Rens lost in the finals of the P.A.T.S. to the Metro Flyers so it will be interesting to see how they respond at the Clash. I expect them to come out ready to fight.

4. Team Nelson: TN lost to RIO in the finals of the MLK Classic. But at the Clash they will have their skipper back at the helm.

5. 6th Man Warriors: The Warriors move up after winning their MLK Classic in Maryland. They are truly a stubborn bunch.

6. Metro Flyers: The Flyers move up after winning the P.A.T. Invitational. Hopefully they can take this momentum into the Clash For The Cup.

7. CIA Bounce: Bounce made a strong impression at the Tip Off Classic by making it to the final four. I expect more of the same in two weeks.

8. Team Final: TF joins the party after a good showing during the MLK Classic. I like some of the pieces they have and look forward to seeing them at the Clash.

9. MJ Mavericks: The Mavs had a decent showing at the MLK Classic. I know they will be looking to do more at the Clash.

10. Playaz: The Playaz round out the Top 10 and might be joining the group down in the Neptune next weekend.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 has a new #1 team and another new member. Remember these rankings are just our opinion of who are the Top 10 teams in the region.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team IZOD: This crew defeated then #1 Playaz in Massachusetts to win the Jr. Hoop Hall Classic title over MLK weekend. Also the “Supreme Team” seems to be back as Jahvon Quinerly returned to rock with his old mates. Now we will see how their fare at the Clash.

2. Playaz: PBC took a tough one on the chin in Jr. Hoop Hall Classic in the finals against IZOD. They are not scheduled for the Clash but I know we will see them soon.

3. Team Takeover: TT breezed through the 6th Man Warriors MLK tournament in Maryland. Now they will be their squad to the Spotlight test again at the Clash. I look forward to seeing them in two weeks.

4. Team Final: TF returns after a good Tip Off Classic showing. Right now they sit comfortably in the Top 5 hopefully they can stay there.

5. Rens: The Rens won the P.A.T. Invitational. Now they will try to revenge their Tip Off Classic showing with a good outing at the Clash for The Cup.

6. Team Scan: TS made it to the semifinals of the Jr. Hoop Hall Classic and they also will be trying to make a deep run at the Clash For The Cup.

7. SHA Elite: This balanced squad made their name known during the after winning the Tip Off Classic. They are probable for the Clash. We will keep you posted.

8. Maryland Sports Scholars: MSS makes their Top 10 debut after winning the MLK Classic. Hopefully we will get another look at them during the DMV Takeover.

9. PYO: The Philly Boys bullied their way into the Top 10 after making it to the finals of the MLK Classic. I know we will be seeing this bunch very soon.

10. Team Twelve: The Brooklyn Boys hold on to the last spot after losing in the final four of the MLK Classic. We will see them at the Clash.

Diary Of A Baller: Atiba Taylor (Hackensack, NJ) Entry #9

Atiba and Teammates Win Jr. Hoop Hall Classic

What’s up this is Atiba Taylor Jr. reporting back with another basketball diary entry.

Monday there was no school because it was Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday. Martin Luther King changed the world and made it possible for all of us to have the opportunities that we have today so I forever appreciate him and thank him. Usually I’m not able to make The Hoop Hall Classic Monday games but because of the holiday I was able to attend the high school games with my teammates and coaches. We got the chance to see a lot of the top high school programs in the country play like Findlay Prep, Montverde Academy, Curie High School, and more. I think Cliff Alexander was the most exciting player of the tournament he was a BEAST. He’ll be a Kansas Jayhawk in college so definitely look out for him. Hopefully you guys will watch me play in The Hoop Hall Classic next year because the high school I’m attending will be in that event next year. After the tournament we left to head home.

Tuesday was a regular back to school day. While at school we got hit with another snowstorm, which led to my evening basketball workout getting canceled because the roads were terrible and they canceled school on Wednesday because of the bad whether so Tuesday and Wednesday ended up turning into vacation days lol.

Thursday night we had practice but it was cut an hour short because there was a gym conflict with the fire department basketball team and us. We should of just scrimmaged them just to stay in the gym, they probably couldn’t keep up anyway lol. Friday night my friends and I went to a party around my way, which was cool. I didn’t get home till 1:00. We had practice the next day so I had to get ready for that.

Saturday and Sunday my team practiced, were getting ready for that Clash Of The Cup Tournament on February 8th – 9th and it’s a must win. We also found out that we are headed to Portland Oregon instead of the M.I.T. for The Nike Gymrats Presidents Day Tournament, which should a good. Flying all the way across the country to play against west coast talent is different but a great experience for us. We went to Utah last year and took the X-Factor Invitational Tournament championship and I hope we’ll have the same results in Portland. West coast teams love to shoot the 3 ball as mush as possible, that’s very different from east coast ball plus they play at a slower pace.

Team Izod Sports-U is the best basketball program and experience I ever had. They care about us over here and it’s not just about basketball its education, teaching us how to be young men, etiquette on and off the floor, community service, and more. The experiences and opportunities they give us is more than appreciate and we are a family not just a team.

 Until next week…

Word On The Street: Boys Back In Town, Cali Love And Express Yourself!

I'M BACK SO YOU KNOW IT'S DRAMA!

The Basketball Spotlight season is heating up both on and off the court. In this edition of Word On The Street we examine some of the big moves going on in the AAU world. Remember most of this information comes from reliable sources but is subject to change. (This Is AAU Basketball)

“Supreme Team” Reunites As Quinerly Returns To IZOD

I guess the final chapter of the Supreme Team isn’t written because POY frontrunner Jahvon Quinerly has apparently left the Playaz Basketball Club and returned to Team IZOD. This move definitely shifts the 8th Grade power over to the Under Armor bunch. This also gives the “Supreme Team” another shot at that elusive AAU National title that slipped through their hands last season. Stay tuned because I got the feeling we haven’t heard the last of the story surrounding this group of players.

Suber Heads West

When the I 10 Celtics traveled to NJ for the Tip Off Classic they didn’t win the tournament but they left with one of the top coaches from our area. New York legend Paul Suber is the new skipper of the California based squad. He’s known for coaching legendary NY teams such as Riverside Hawks, Gauchos and Team Next. Basketball Spotlight will keep you posted on his progress on the West Coast.

Jones Leaves Spartans

When the Boston Spartans attended the MLK Classic they were noticeably without their starting wing guard Dominic Jones. Jones has starred for Spartans in several Spotlight events and my guess is that he is moving over to Expressions. Word is that Expressions is revamping their 8th Grade team and snatching up all the prime real estate in the New England area. We will keep you guys posted.

Grand Finale Final Four Point System Update

MLK Classic 8th Grade Best Of The Best And Super 10 Top Performers

Marvin Price Starred At MLK Classic

The MLK Classic is in the books and the 8th Grade Division and introduced us to some new faces. We decided to bring back our segment of Best Of The Best.

MLK Classic 8th Grade Best Of The Best

Best Performer: Marvin Price (Maryland Scholars)
Price took home the MVP honors because he dominated the entire event. This kid is a relentless force that has the good touch to score in traffic. He’s definitely a difference maker.

Best Point Guard: Theodore Senior (Team Twelve)
Senior was exciting to watch as he put tremendous punishment on the defense. He will be one to watch as the Spotlight circuit carries on.

Best Athlete: Ahmad Williams (PYO)
The high flying guard plays with a reckless style similar to Dwayne Wade. He showed some above the rim skills throughout the weekend.

Best Backcourt: Brandon Madison, Rasheed Brown, Steven Parker (Maryland Scholars)
These boys played well together and showed the true meaning of sharing the rock. They didn’t care who scored the most or who got the shine. They were all about the wins.

Best Shooter: Shaquest Chavis (Team Twelve)
As documented in the article Chavis showed he had a ratchet. If he catches fire is over for opponents.

Best Versatility: Dana Tate (Boston Spartans)
Something tells me that this kid will be someone to watch down the road. The New England has been producing legit wing players and this kid seems to be next in line. He can get it done inside or outside.

Best Prospect: Moses Brown (Team Twelve)
A few years down the road Brown might be the name a lot of scouts are talking about. His length cannot be taught and his skill set is developing.

Best Kept Secret: Abraham Diaz (Boston Spartans)
Diaz showed flashes of being a good prospect down the road. He doesn’t like getting physical which is okay because he naturally a guard.

MLK Classic 8th Grade Super 10 Performer Rankings
1. Marvin Price (Maryland Scholars)
2. Ahmad Williams (PYO)
3. Rasheed Brown (Maryland Scholars)
4. Dana Tate (Boston Spartans)
5. Antwuan Butler (PYO)
6. Theodore Senior (Team Twelve)
7. Jordan Jones (Maryland Scholars)
8. Shaquest Chavis (Team Twelve)

MLK Classic 7th Grade Best Of The Best And Super 10 Performer Rankings

Travis Cumber (MJ Mavericks)

The MLK Classic is in the books and the 7th Grade Division gave us some good moments. We decided to bring back our segment of Best Of The Best.

MLK Classic 7th Grade Best Of The Best

Best Point Guard: Travis Cumber (MJ Mavericks)
Cumber runs the pick and roll like John Stockton. He also plays with supreme confidence similar to the Hall Of Fame guard. During the pick and roll if you back of Travis he can make you pay with the deep ball. He also has uncanny court vision. This kid delivers the rock on the dime.

Best Performer: Scottie Lewis (Team RIO)
There’s nothing we can say that hasn’t been said already. This kid was everybody of his nickname “The Show”. The scary part is more is yet to come!

Best Prospect: Mahkel Mitchell (DC Blue Devils)
Believe or not Mitchell has just as much upside as any player in this class. What’s so intriguing is that standing 6'6 he looks so comfortable on the perimeter and even creating like a point guard at times. Once he gets stronger and more assertive this kid could be a beast.

Best Big Man: Tariq Ingraham (PBC Boys Club)
Ingraham once again put up serious numbers inside. He’s become a little more mobile in terms of running the floor and also showed more improvement with his touch. Standing 6’6 and growing makes him a dangerous prospect down the road.

Best Scorer: Greg Greel (RJS)
The lefty was everywhere on the floor and put up numbers for RJS. He either bullied his way to the cup or knocked down the trey ball from the corner. Most of his points came from him being very active and hustling harder than his opponents.

Best Shooter: Fahmir Ali (Team Final)
Ali can drift to the corner and knock down the deep trey or big it from the top of the key off the dribble. He has good confidence in his shot and once he gets going he’s capable of draining several in a row. He’s always a threat from behind the arc.

Best Shot Blocker: Donta Scott (Team Nelson)
Scott recorded 11 blocks versus the MJ Mavericks. He looked like King Kong on top of the Empire State Building. He made dribble drivers think twice before trying to score at the rim.

MLK Classic 7th Grade Super 10 Performer Rankings
1. Scottie Lewis (Team RIO National)
2. Jordan McKoy (Team RIO National)
3. Greg Geel (RJS)
4. Tariq Ingraham (PBC Bouys Club)
5. Ahmadu Sarnor (Team RIO National)
6. Travis Cumber (MJ Mavericks)
7. Karam Cummings (Team Nelson)
8. Mahkel Mitchell (DC Blue Devils)
9. Fahmir Ali (Team Final)
10. Donta Scott (Team Nelson)

MLK Classic 7th Grade Top Performers Part 1: We Got Busy!

Scottie Lewis (Team RIO National)

The MLK Classic 7th Grade Division showed some usual suspects and usual results. Here are the top performers from the weekend.

MLK Classic 7th Grade Top Performers Part 1

MVP
Scottie Lewis Forward (Team RIO)- Lewis gave another outstanding performance. His athleticism has been well documented but more notice needs to be shown on how he impacts the game. Despite leading the team in scoring he also had about 8 blocks and numerous steals in the finals. This kid just plays the game at a different pace than his peers. He has the flair for excitement but also brings his lunch pail like a blue collar guy. Few players totally separate themselves from others on their level but Lewis is one of them. He’s one of the best 7th Graders I’ve seen during my Spotlight years.

Ahmadu Sarnor Forward (Team RIO)- During the semi-finals it was Sarnor’s play that helped Rio earn an early knockout of Team Final. TF came out strong but Ahmadu’s aggressive and bruising style of penetration wore down the Nike squad. He also showed some finesse in his game with a smooth pull up jumper. Finally he made his presence felt on both ends during the finals.

Jordan McKoy Guard (Team RIO)- While Lewis has gotten headlines McKoy is also putting together a great start of the season. He has proven to be one of the best finishers in the region. He fills the lane well before converting with either hand. He seems to be gaining confidence with his jump shot and is still a pest on defense. McKoy helps Team RIO’s high octane offense by also hitting the boards and out letting the rock.

AJ Hoggard Guard (Team RIO)- Hoggard had fun this weekend running up and down while dishing the pill. He has thoroughbreds running all around him so it’s just a matter of him picking his target. I still think we are about two years away from seeing mature product because he body needs to catch up with his basketball instincts.

Jalen Brooks Guard (Team RIO)- Brooks spent this weekend getting acclimated with his new teammates. There wasn’t resistance from opponents so he joined in on forcing turnovers and scoring in transition. As their schedule gets tougher he will be counted on to bring that experience he gained from playing with the “Supreme Team” last season.

Mark Bradshaw Guard (Team Nelson)- Bradshaw’s best outing came in their loss in the finals. The lefty seemed like the only teammate that came to face the RIO challenge. He stayed in attack mode and didn’t stop competing even when the game was out of control.

Donta Scott Forward (Team Nelson)- Scott was a shot blocking machine in their contest against the MJ Mavericks. He anchored the defense and swatted shots from every angle. He needs to pick up his offensive production for them to make a deep run on the Spotlight circuit.

Asim Richards Forward (Team Nelson)- TN has been known for developing players over the years and Richards seem like the next in line. Last season he played a smaller role but now he looks like the rugged forward is ready to roll. He was able to bang the glass and throw some bodies around.

Karam Cummings Forward (Team Nelson)- Cummings is another budding new contributor for Team Nelson. He’s a little more perimeter oriented than Richards but also can snatch a few boards when available. He will need to pick up some of the scoring slack left by Mikeal Jones.

Diary Of A Baller: Atiba Taylor Jr. (Hackensack, NJ) Entry #8

Atiba Taylor At Hall Of Fame

What’s up this is Atiba Taylor Jr. reporting back with another basketball diary entry.

Monday’s are usually sluggish because it’s the beginning of a long school week. After school my Dad had me do a different type of workout that I know will help my all-around game but I wasn’t thrilled about it Lol. He took me to the gym for a spinning class, which is basically an indoor cycling training class. The class benefits are too burn calories, it’s a low impact exercise; reduce risk of injury, adjustable tempo, build muscle tone, and increased cardio endurance. I mean at the end of the class I was done and my legs felt like jelly. Going hard for a full 60 minutes of peddling a bike at high speeds with resistance is crazy but it’s well worth it Lol. After the spinning class I did some pull-ups, dips, and some super lightweight training but high reps.

MLK Classic 8th Grade Top Performers: We Have Arrived!

Marvin Price Earned MVP Honors

The 8th Grade Division of the MLK Classic truly gave us a chance to watch some new talent. Here’s a breakdown of some of the top performers that came to play in Pennsylvania.

MLK Classic 8th Grade Top Performers

MVP
Marvin Price Forward (Maryland Scholars)- Price brought his A game all weekend. The lefty crashed the boards and scored inside similar to Zach Randolph. He runs the floor like a deer and never stops attacking the tin. He continued to beat the opposing big man down the floor. I like the way he approaches the game.

Rasheed Brown Guard (Maryland Scholars)- Brown is a combo guard the has a scoring mentality. The southpaw has a mean floater that he uses as one of his main weapons. He also excels in the open floor with his ability to push the rock.

Brandon Madison Guard (Maryland Scholars)- Madison has made the full transition to point guard and I must say he looked decent this weekend. He’s too strong to keep out the lane and can finish through contact. He also made it his business to keep everyone happy. He showed good flashes.

Jordan Jones Forward (Maryland Scholars)- Jones was one of the best prospects in the building. He has good size and seems to be very light on his feet. I like his rebounding and shot altering ability. He also has decent touch especially when facing the basket.

Antwuan Butler Guard (PYO)- Butler gave opponents problems all weekend from the point guard position. He broke down the defense with ease and finished against the trees inside. He has the toughness that Philly guards are known of and some good court vision to go with it.

Ahmad Williams Guard (PYO)- Williams goes hard from buzzer to buzzer. He’s a powerful combo guard with unique leaping ability. He tries to play above the rim regardless of what defenders are in the area. He injured his shoulder by trying to jump over Jones for a dunk in the finals.

Theodore Senior Guard (Team 12)- Senior pushes the rock with the speed and power of a Ty Lawson. He went end to end in a blur and was able to convert. On defense he was a menace of the press by picking off passes like a corner back. I was impressed watching him play the first time in person.

Shaquest Chavis Guard (Team 12)- Chavis is a lefty with a lot of swagger to his game. I saw him catch fire from deep and verbally let his opponents know that he heated up. I like his size, ball handling and range on his outside shot.

Le’vaun Miller Forward (Team 12)- Speaking of size Miller did most of the damage for the Brooklyn boys inside. He’s a quick leaper and powers up well when getting put backs. He’s a bandit along the baseline with a good upside.

Moses Brown Forward (Team 12)- Brown is definitely more prospect than producer right now even though I saw him in stretches get things done. He’s long so he can alter shots and score in the paint. He’s also beginning the run the floor better.

Dave Mitchell Forward (Boston Spartans)- Mitchell is a slashing athlete that scores his best in transition. On defense he plays the passing lanes well and can guard multiple positions. I’m interested in seeing how he develops.

Dana Tate Forward (Boston Spartans)- Tate is a nice looking prospect for the Spartans. He can go either outside or inside. He’s not very physical right now but that should change down the road.

MLK Classic 8th Grade Preview: New Teams Emerging!

Hilltoppers Heat Are Coming!

The 8th Grade Division at the MLK Classic will definitely give us a chance to see some new talent. We are anxious to see what team will leave the champion in Pennsylvania.

MLK Classic 8th Grade Preview

Hilltoppers Heat: The Heat made their name known by winning the Tip Off Classic Blue Division Championship. The MLK Classic competition should be a little stiffer so we will really get a chance to see where they stand.

Team Twelve: After making it to the finals of the Tip Off Classic (Orange Division) this Brooklyn crew has to be one of the favorites to win it all. The have enough weapons to get this done.

Team Final Black: Last year this group made a little noise in this event as Team Rebels. Maybe playing near their home turf will help them out again this year.

Boston Spartans: The Spartans will be taking the long trip with hopes of winning the banner. Their scrappy style might help them get over the top.

Maryland Scholars: Word from the Maryland area is that this squad should blow the doors off this event. I remember the name from a few years ago and so suspect they have a group of studs.

Pittsburgh Cavemen: The Cavemen will be making their Spotlight debut and don’t be surprised if they make a serious run at the title. I’ve seen them at other events and they always represent themselves well.

DC Blue Devils: We don’t know much about this bunch so we will get our first look at them this weekend.

PYO: This tough Philly organization always brings the realness when they enter the gym. I’m anxious to see what they have this time around.

MLK Classic 7th Grade Preview: Here We Go Again!

Team RIO Looking For More Banners

The 7th Grade Division of the MLK Classic should be very interesting. The Grand Finale champs make their season debut and Team Rio is here to show they are the new kings of the circuit.

7th Grade MLK Preview

Team RIO National: TRN made heavy buzz after storming through the Tip Off Classic. Now by donning the #1 spot in the region they should be a favorite to cruise through this tournament also. Standing in their way should be Grand Finale defending champs Team Nelson.

Team Nelson: Speaking of the defending champs, TN has heard the talk about several teams over the past few years but always found a way to get snatch the main banner when it counts. We will see how they open up the season this weekend.

MJ Mavericks: The Mavs made a little noise at the Tip Off Classic, while making it to the finals of the Tip Off Classic (Orange Division). Last year they gave the crowd some excitement in this event and we are looking for them to have a repeat performance.

DC Blue Devils: DC Blue Devils bring in a wealth of experience including the Mitchell Twins. Now they must be ready to show they are among the elite in the class. This will be a good start for these guys.

Team Final: TF will be looking to make a name for themselves in this age group. They have some tough competition to conquer in the process.

RJS: The Burlington County boys will be looking to rebound after a tough outing during the Tip Off Classic. They have shown the ability to bounce back in the past.

Team Phenom: Team Phenom is coming in representing Philly. This means they will be playing with heart and determination. They made a little noise at the Tip Off Classic.

PBC Boys Club: PBC will be looking to impress us after coming up short at the Tip Off Classic. Here’s their second shot on the big stage.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Clarke Sees Big Picture

Aaron Clarke (Team Scan)

Aaron Clarke has been known throughout his grammar school career as a scorer and dead-eye shooter. But before he reaches high school he wanted to add some other elements to his game thus he joined Team Scan. Team Scan director and 8th Grade coach Terrance “Munch” Williams was on Clarke from the Day 1. “From the first day he walked into the gym he was required to be a vocal leader, play the defensive side of the ball with the same passion he does on offense, start the beginning stages of being a point guard and most importantly think long term about his career” said Williams.

Clarke displayed some of his new techniques during the Tip Off Classic and the East Coast Super Skillcase in Atlantic City where he finished as one of the top players in the event. Coach Williams sees a bright future for Clarke. “In my opinion, if he remains a humble hard working person he is, he will receive a free education in college and possibly make some money playing the game of basketball” he finished.

Check Clarke and his Team Scan teammates as they join the rest of the top teams at the Clash For The Cup. Stay tuned as Basketball Spotlight brings you more news from around the country.

Diary Of A Baller: Atiba Taylor (Hackensack, NJ) Entry #7

Atiba Taylor (Hackensack)

What’s up this is Atiba Taylor Jr. reporting back with another basketball diary entry.

The beginning of my week started off pretty rough. All week my back was killing me from something I did to it at practice last weekend. Monday – Wednesday I couldn’t do anything basketball wise so I rested for a few days. I tried using a heating pad but it really didn’t work that well so then I tried the Epson Salt bath, which actually took some of the soreness away along with the Icy Hot and Advil I was taking. I was doing everything I could to get myself prepared for the weekend.

On Thursday after school I went to 24 hr Fitness to work out with a trainer. We worked on a lot of core, explosion, and upper body exercises for an hour. It was a hard workout but it’s definitely worth. After I was done with the trainer I put some shots up for an hour. I’m trying to elevate my game and become more of a mid range shooter. I know the mid range area will be a major factor for me next year at the varsity level.

Friday night I was suppose to have a game in Teaneck somewhere with a local team but the game got canceled so I really didn’t do anything. Had I known the game was going to be canceled I would have went to the Roselle Catholic vs. Plainfield game which I heard Roselle won.

Saturday morning Luther, Nazi, and I went to a basketball workout before we had Izod practice. The workout was really good we did pretty much all mid range work and a lot of off the dribble jump shots. Focused more on ripping the ball low and elevating on the pull up jumpers. I loved the workout and it was a great warm-up before practice. At practice Coach B and Coach Seth just went over everything we’ll need to know for this upcoming weekends tournament in Springfield Mass. Coach Reggie came towards the end of practice and we all just talked about working hard and getting ready for high school ball. After practice Nazi, Spoon, Jahvon, and I went to 24hr Fitness to play ball later that night. We played 4 on 4 games all night with some random dudes in the gym but nobody could knock us off the court. We didn’t leave them gym until 1:30 am.

On Sunday we had practice at 12 noon and we had a controlled scrimmage the entire time. I’m more than confident that we will be ready for The Hall Of Fame Tournament, we won the championship last year and we plan on winning it this year too. After practice my Dad, Luther, and I went to the Roselle Catholic vs. The Patrick School game at Kean University. The atmosphere and game play reminded me of a real college game. It was a tough game, Roselle took their first loss of the year and The Patrick School got the win. After the game I went home and took it down for the night.

 Until next week,

Atiba Taylor Jr.

One On One Feat. Jahvon "Inferno" Quinerly (Playaz)

Jahvon "Inferno" Quinerly

Every year during the Tip Off Classic a player steps out and shows his peers that he is ready for the next step. This year Jahvon Quinerly made his move. The high scoring combo guard lit up the opposition while leading the Playaz Basketball Club to the championship and a #1 ranking in our polls. We got chance to holla at the kid named “Inferno” and here’s what he had to say.

One On One

BS: How is your season going so far?
JQ: My season is going good. My teammates and I are starting to gel and play well together. The pre-season has been a lot of competitive play so we’ve had a chance to see what we will be up against this year.

BS: How was the “Supreme Team” experience last year?
JQ: The “Supreme Team” was an experience that I feel very blessed to have been a part of. The talent on that team was the best. The organization is great. I was playing with my good friends and we were lucky enough to travel everywhere to compete all over the map. We had a lot of juice around the country. Kids asked to take pictures with us after games and some little kids had even asked us for our autographs at Nationals. Coach Reggie held long intense practices, which started in August so our team bond was strong and it showed on and off the court. We were very structured. At first, that was hard for me to get used to but after awhile I knew it was what I needed at that time to be successful.

Introducing Rasir Bolden (Chesterfield, Virginia)

Bolton is a 14 year old 8th grader currently starting PG for Life Christian Academy in VA where he averages 27 PPG on the varsity level.. Poised and mature with a deadly stroke. He creates for others and is an efficient scorer at all 3 levels, 3 ball, mid range and is an excellent finisher at the rim with an automatic floater. Bolton plays travel basketball with Adidas Grassroots program Team Loaded (VA) and plays with the 2017 squad.

Basketball Spotlight Feature: Winston Returns With A Vengeance!

Justin Winston (Playaz)

One of the hottest names of this young AAU season has to be 8th Grader Justin Winston of the Playaz Basketball Club. Winston missed most of last season with a hip injury and the uncertainty of how he would return caused him to dip a little in our rankings. But Justin didn’t whine he let his game do the talking and it’s been barking loud. During the Tip Off Classic he helped the Playaz win the championship while performing as the best forward in the event.

His coach Kiela Brevard is happy to have him aboard, “Justin is a great kid who just turned 14 in October. He’s a skilled and team-oriented player who rebounds and defends well. Right now I would call him a face up four that can play inside and outside. I also think he can score from all three positions (center and both forwards spots) on the high school level right now” he finished.

The Playaz have had a long list of big time players that have graduated from their program and Brevard feels Winston has the chance to be next in line. “He has worked hard to improve his jump shot and now once he continues to work on his ball handling I see him being a problem to defend down the road” said Brevard.

Basketball Spotlight will keep you guys posted on more players from around the country.

Spotlight Alum Woods Scores 42 Points In One Quarter! (Highlights Included)

Seventh Woods Soaring

Seventh Woods made a name for himself recently by throwing down a monster dunk, but now the 15-year-old phenom showed he can shoot the ball as well. With his team trailing 56-31 after three quarters, Woods put his team on his back. The Hammond High School sophomore nailed seven three-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished the game with 42 points.

However, Woods' performance wasn't enough. The Fayetteville Trinity Crusaders came away with a 79-65 victory over the Skyhawks at the HighSchoolOT.com Holiday Invitational.
