Basketball Spotlight National Player Rankings Coming Soon!

Basketball Spotlight will be releasing out National Player Rankings very soon. Stay tuned as we bring you the top players in the country but keep in mind this is just our opinion and should be taken as such. We will be ranking the Class of 2016, 2017 and 2018. It should be a lot of fun.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: NyRhique Smith (Tinton Falls, NJ)

Name: NyRhique Smith

Hometown: Tinton Falls, NJ

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: “La Smoove” had his moments during the J.E.M. All Star Classic. He got into the lane and finished effectively while also knocking down a few jumpers. On defense he showed the willingness to lock down when his rep is on the line. As he heads to Monmouth Regional he must continue work hard because the program will be his from Day 1. I also see a few college offers heading his way very soon.

Battle Picks Up Orange Offer

Tyus Battle At Syracuse Elite Camp

Rising Frosh Tyus Battle has now received a scholarship offer from Syracuse University. Battle recently compiled offers from Seton Hall, Rutgers, Rhode Island and the University of Miami. His father Gary Battle appeared happy with the news, “It’s definitely flattering and a blessing to be gaining attention from these universities this early in the process but Tyus understands that this is just the beginning. This road is very long and he has a lot of work to do” said Gary. Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Tyus Battle on his scholarship offers and wish him the best during his high school career.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Temple Gibbs (Scotch Plains, NJ)

Name: Temple Gibbs

Hometown: Scotch Plains, NJ

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: Gibbs stepped his game up after receiving the Player Of The Year Award. The physical has been known to drive the ball down the teeth of the defense during any contest. This season he proved to step up big Team Scan needed him the most especially during the Grand Finale and AAU Nationals. Now he takes his game to Seton Hall Prep to follow the footsteps of his older brothers Ashton and Sterling. The Blueprint 3 is one the way.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Tyus Battle (Edison, NJ)

Name: Tyus Battle

Hometown: Edison, NJ

Position: Shooting Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: After receiving very few touches in the first half, “Kid Mamba” woke up to make things happen in the second stanza. He converted a few easy buckets posting up and was able to break away from defenders with an array of moves. This kid has had one of the most memorable grammar school basketball careers to date. He was a part of the group of players to help lay the foundation of Basketball Spotlight. He will be taking his instant offense to Gill St. Bernard next year. He has received several college offers already and was just invited to the USA Basketball Trials in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Introducing EJ Montgomery Of Florida (Class of 2018 Stud)

EJ Montgomery

Florida native EJ Montgomery has been called the top 7th grader in the nation by some onine outlets. The 6’6 shooting guard was a special talent to watch at the 2012 JR All-American Camp as he showed a game mature beyond his years. Clay Dade who runs the JR All-American Camp compared Montgomery to a young Grant Hill. Montgomery is definitely a player to watch in the class of 2018.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Unique McLean (Brooklyn, NY)

Name: Unique McLean

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

Position: Shooting Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: The game’s MVP was up for debate until McLean closed the show in spectacular fashion. On the game’s final play Unique broke away from the pack, bounce to rock up over the rim and dunked it in with authority. It was a fitting way to end this season and that event. He’s by far the best dunker to ever compete on the Spotlight circuit period. He will be playing his second varsity at Hoosac School in upstate New York.

J.E.M. All Classic Profile: Tuva Mott (Philadelphia, PA)

Name: Tuva Mott

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Position: Forward

Class: 2016

Analysis: Mott showed some progress in his perimeter skills. He demonstrated some court awareness and ability to shoot from the perimeter. I was intrigued by his form from behind the arc. If he continues to develop his ball handling and decision making he could turn into a serious combo guard one day. He will be under the watchful eye of Coach Pervis Ellison at Life Center Academy.

Team IZOD Hosting Tryouts

Team IZOD will be hosting tryouts for their 13U team for next season. The details of the tryouts are below.

Date: September 8, 2012

Place: Sports University Complex
22 Madison Rd. Fairfield, NJ (Off Of RT. 46)

Time: 9:00 AM-11:00AM and 1:00 PM-3:00 PM
(Players trying out must attend both sessions to make the team.)

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Reggie Gardner (Bowie, MD)

Name: Reggie Gardner

Hometown: Bowie, MD

Position: Shooting Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: Gardner performed well enough to take home the MVP honors. He lit up the net from the perimeter while knocking down 5 treys. His shots seemed to come at the right time and the crowd really enjoyed his shooting display. He plays his best when his confidence is flowing on this type of level. Hopefully he can take this swag into Dematha High School next season.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Alani Moore (Germantown, MD)

Name: Alani Moore

Hometown: Germantown, MD

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: “Showtime” tried his best to give the crowd a treat. His showcased his tricky handle and ability to get past defenders. He has proven over the years to be one of the top performers to come through our events. He will be taking his talent to Dematha High School and should start on that national stage by the time he’s a sophomore. We would like to thank him for some great times.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Bryce Aiken (Randolph, NJ)

Name: Bryce Aiken

Hometown: Randolph, NJ

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: Aiken capped off his grammar school career in great fashion. “Capo” ran the show for the North squad at the J.E.M. All Star Classic. It’s amazing how he dictates the pace no matter the competition or atmosphere. Bryce was able to make plays for himself as well as his comrades. We will really miss his unselfish style, competitive nature and willingness to win. He will be a great addition to Pope John High School next winter.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Anthony Cowan (Bowie, MD)

Name: Anthony Cowan

Hometown: Bowie, MD

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis:”Mister” Cowan tickled the twine a few times from outside the arc. He’s comfortable at either guard spot and was able to apply some defensive pressure on the pill. He had a stellar Spotlight career and left us with some fond memories. He should be given the keys to the offense at Good Counsel next winter. Hopefully we will be reading about him on the high school websites.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Vaughn Covington (Philadelphia, PA)

Name: Vaughn Covington

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

Position: Point Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: Covington started off hot from the perimeter while helping the South take an early lead. He had the 3 ball working from the corners while also making the extra pass to teammates. Vaughn displayed the knack off getting into the lane while at the controls. It seems like Philly powerhouse Neumann-Goretti might have inherited their next pure floor general in this kid.

J.E.M. All Star Classic: Daveyon Barnes (Baltimore, MD)

Name: Daveyon Barnes

Hometown: Baltimore, MD

Position: Forward

Class: 2016

Analysis: Standing 6’4 Barnes is a physical specimen and good athlete. During the J.E.M. he was able to overpower a few defenders and hammer the glass. Now he must develop his perimeter skills because of the next level the length of the interior defenders might become a problem. He seems to have a serious work ethic some we have no doubt about him transforming to the wing.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Ako Adams (Washington, DC)

Name: Ako Adams

Hometown: Washington, DC

Position: Combo Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: Playing both guard positions will benefit Adams on the next level. During the J.E.M. All Star Classic he showed the ability to get into the lane and use his floater to convert. He’s on an AAU squad with other guards that garnish attention but don’t be surprised if his stock rises once he gets his own show on the high school level.

Basketball Spotlight Headed To John Lucas Future Of The Game Camp

The 2nd Annual John Lucas Future of the Game camp is looking for the nation's best 2019 and 2020 prospects. The camp is being held September 1 and 2 in Hampton, VA at the Boo Williams facility. Coach Lucas was the #1 overall pick in 1976 for the Houston Rockets, he has been an NBA head coach, and he has developed or advised countless NBA players. All told, Coach Lucas has been involved with the NBA for more than 35 years.

Known as one of the world's premier teachers, Coach Lucas's camps provide first-rate instruction from Coach Lucas himself as well as from other highly qualified coaches. Additionally, in terms of talent, Coach Lucas's camps always attract the best of the best.

Besides the instruction and the opportunity to measure yourself against the nation's best players, Coach Lucas's camps also provide a high level of exposure. Not only is Coach Lucas on the selection committee for the McDonalds All American game, but he personally selects the players for the NBA Players' Association Top 100 camp for the best high school players in the country. But in addition to Coach Lucas, his camps typically prove to be a magnet for a who's who of national media experts who cover this age group (Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop, Van Coleman of Hot 100 Hoops, Spencer Pulliam of Dunk Dog, and Basketball Spotlight).

This Future of the Game East Camp is one of only two camps that Coach Lucas runs for this age group, and the next one won't take place until Las Vegas in the Spring of 2013. For more information, please email his director of scouting, Brian Merritt, at bmerritt@johnlucasenterprises.com.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Devonte Green (Long Island, NY)

Name: Devonte Green

Hometown: Long Island, NY

Position: Shooting Guard

Class: 2016

Analysis: During the J.E.M. Classic Green let the game come to him. He made his mark by draining a couple of outside jumpers even stopping and popping in transition. He’s a bona-fide scorer that only heats up after making baskets. Green was in the talk for MVP honors before his teammate Unique Mclean closed the show. Green already has a year of varsity basketball under his belt so he should have a stellar career in front on him.

J.E.M. All Star Classic Profile: Matthew Bullock (Elizabeth, NJ)

Name: Matthew Bullock

Hometown: Elizabeth, NJ

Position: Wing Forward

Class: 2016

Analysis: Bullock arrived to the J.E.M. Classic right before tipoff but still managed to make his presence felt. Not only did he show his improved ball handling but also displayed explosiveness when finishing at the rim. On one particular play he went down the lane, broke through traffic and finished with a tomahawk dunk with ease. I see some exciting things down the road for this kid.

Smith Selects Monmouth Regional

NyRhique Smith Headed To Monmouth Regional

After considering St. Benedicts Prep, Hudson Catholic and St. Peters Prep; NyRhique Smith as decided to stay home and attend Monmouth Regional in Tinton Falls, NJ. Smith recently won the Basketball Spotlight 2011-2012 8th Grade Most Outstanding Player Award while playing in out circuit with the Playaz.

Diary Of A Baller: Tyus "Kid Mamba" Battle (Edison, NJ) Entry #46

What's up basketball world? It has been several weeks since my last entry and a lot has happened. First off my Nana has been sick and in the hospital. l therefore I had to cut back on some travel events that I would have otherwise participated in. My Nana is my Dad's mother and the Rock of our family. Having her sick has been hard on my dad and all of us, although we rarely talk about it. I can see pain in my dad’s face some days and lately he has been almost too patient with my brother and I.

A little more than 2 weeks from now school will begin and by now most people may know that I will be attending The Gill Saint Bernard School in Gladstone, NJ. I know school will be very challenging academically but I am looking forward to the challenge of balancing school and everything it has to offer. I have been spending quite a bit of time at school over the past 2 weeks and the guys on the team have really embraced me more than I expected. Which I am really happy about and it should make my transition a little bit easier in a few weeks.

During the last week of July, I played in my first game that included most of my soon to be Knight basketball team members. I played pretty well overall against the 17U competition and even managed to post a team high 27 points and 8 rebounds in a game. My dad said ESPN wrote a little article about it but I never read it. I read a lot but I seldom read about basketball and never read my own articles or articles about myself. My dad and my brother love that stuff!

Basketball never stops, so you know I've been in the gym or in the weight room just about every day and I have to do my Shaun Teague's workout often. My dad and Khalif and I hit the Club daily to get shots up and work on ball-handling and when dad has been out of town Coach Eric, formally of Saint Pat's and Mount Verde, or Bryce from Impossible Training, give my brother and I great workouts to keep us sharp.

Last time I wrote an entry I think I told you all that I got a hand written note from RU Head Coach Mike Rice. This is really exciting for me because I basically grew up going to RU basketball and football games because my friends’ parents had tickets. Recently, I also received a few more letters from University of Miami and I just attended a Seton Hall practice this past Sunday and the coaches kept saying how they would love me to be playing at Seton Hall in the future. It is all very cool but I know how much I have to keep working and make God a bigger part of my life and just stay positive.

I have been over my mom's house for few days and my dad has been away. He told me he was going to visit the University of Miami where my step-mom went to school and played basketball. He also told me the school was awesome and that all the coaches showed him around. It is 11:35 on Friday and Dad is coming at 12PM so I need to get going.

This Is Tyus Battle Signing Off

J.E.M. All Star Classic 8th Grade Recap: Written By ESPN.com

Unique McLean MVP

By John Stovall ESPN.com

TRENTON, N.J. -- The J.E.M. All Star Classic, which is a showcase put together by Basketball Spotlight founder Mike Melton, featured many of the top middle school players in the Northeast. The highlight of the event was an all-star game, featuring rising ninth graders, and there was some true talent on the floor. The game had some kids that should not only be impact players this year in high school, but potentially premier college players down the road.

Top Performers

Tyus Battle (Edison, N.J./Gill-St. Bernard) 2016, SG, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds- He definitely looks like a future basketball star. He is thin, long, wiry, very skilled and has a great basketball IQ. Battle can score the ball and has the ability to play any perimeter position. He is quick and has been well schooled already as he has a good midrange game and an excellent pull-up jumper. He is already one of the better rising freshmen in the country and has a very good upside. He is scheduled to attend Gill-St. Bernard high school this season.

Rodney Miller (Queens, N.Y.) 2016, C, 6-9, 195 pounds- Rodney might have been the most intriguing prospect at the event. He is already a legitimate 6-9 and has very good length. What I really liked was despite his thin frame he was not hesitant going inside and mixing it up on the low block. He also showed solid skills on the block (finishing with his off/left hand, passing out of double teams and re-posting). Miller also ran the floor solidly and his ceiling is off the charts. Rumor is he will be attending St. Benedict in the fall.

Unique McLean (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 2016, SG, 6-0, 170 pounds- He is one of the most athletic players in the 2016 class that I have seen. The lefty can really finish above the rim and is a slasher who can get in the lane and get some things done. McLean definitely needs to improve some of the other aspects of his game (he is a streaky shooter), but he has solid length and has the look of someone who will be on the national radar moving forward.

Bryce Aiken (Randolph, N.J.) 2016, PG, 5-9, 160 pounds- He is a solid and heady little point guard who can score and create. He has a solid handle and a nice shot with range beyond 20 feet. A very nice player.

Temple Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) 2016, SG/PG, 5-11, 170 pounds- He is following in the footsteps of his famous brothers (Sterling and Ashton). Temple has a similar game and is solid and productive with no frills. Look for him to have the same type of career as his siblings.

Devonte Green (Long Island, N.Y.) 2016, SG, 6-1, 175 pounds- He also has very good bloodlines as his the brother is San Antonio Spur Danny Green. Devonte is a scoring combo guard with good strength who can shoot with range and can finish well in the paint.

NyRhique Smith (Asbury Park, N.J.) 2016, PG/SG, 6-2, 165 pounds- He is a solid combo guard with great size. Smith has a nice handle and is tough to keep out of the lane. His size and skills make him an intriguing prospect.

Reggie Gardner (Bowie, Md.) 2016, SG, 6-2, 170 pounds- He has the ability to put the ball in the basket. Gardner is a streaky shooter with range to 22 feet, but he has a chance to be special as he continues to grow.

J.E.M. All Star Classic 7th Grade Challenge Recap: Blue Team Wins Close Battle

Jermaine Samuels MVP

Jermaine Samuels scored 18 points to lead the Blue Team to a 76-74 victory the Orange Team to win J.E.M. All Star Classic 7th Grade Challenge. D’Andre Vilmer scored 14 points for the Orange Team in the lost.

MVP

Jermaine Samuels Forward (Franklin, MA)- Samuels dominated the competition and took home MVP honors. He had the play of the weekend once he drove down the lane and dunked on two defenders. His dunk caused uproar in the crowd and secured his Player Of The Game award.

Top Performers

Nate Pierre Louis Guard (Plainfield, NJ)- Pierre Louis helped out with the scoring for the Blue Team. He teamed with Mayweather Martin to form a serious backcourt. Nate was able to convert a few difficult shots in the paint and at the rim.

Jaecee Martin Guard (Hartford, CT)- Mayweather used this stage to show how unselfish he could be. He made sure Pierre-Louis and Samuels received the pill in the right place and at the right time. It was a treat watching Martin and Pierre Louis playing together.

Jamir Moultrie Guard (Washington, DC)- Moultrie showed that he will be a serious problem for the class next season. He can score many different ways including knocking down the deep jumper. But his real strength is breaking down defenders and scoring in transition. He puts up buckets in a hurry.

Kimani Foster Forward (Jersey City, NJ)- Foster was a pleasant surprise, I had heard he had game but I saw it in the flesh. His length allowed him to finish off plays in the lane. I like how he understands to keep the ball high at all times. He is still developing but he has good prospect potential.

Quade Green Guard (Philadelphia, PA)- Green finished off the season in good fashion. He seems to be developing other facets off his good which should help him become a better point guard. He’s not the quickest player but very explosive and effective.

D’Andre Vilmer Forward (Dover, DE)- Vilmer has his hand in just about every play. He’s very athletic and runs the floor like a deer. His handle is developing and he attacks the rim with a high motor.

J.E.M. All Star Classic 6th Grade Challenge Recap: Orange Team Wins Thriller!

Daniel Klosk MVP

Daniel Klosk scored 19 points but it wasn’t enough as the Orange Team defeated the Blue Team 61-60 to win the J.E.M. All Star Classic 6th Grade Challenge. Luther Muhammad finished with 14 points for the Orange Team in the win.

MVP

Daniel Klosk Guard (New York, NY)- His team lost the close battle but Klosk’s shooting still earned him MVP honors. The kid found the hot streak and caused the crowd to stand each time he let a shot go. He nailed 5 treys and also made a few moves off the bounce. He has been playing on a high level lately.

Top Performers

Judah McIntyre Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Judah also became a crowd favorite by dishing the rock and making other unselfish plays. His basketball IQ is outstanding and his main concern seems to about winning. Any coach would love to coach this kid.

Luther Muhammad Guard (Irvington, NJ)- The POY turned in another big performance. He’s just too powerful for defenders on this level. Right now his confidence has taken his game to another level. His swagger is off the charts right nowadays.

Justin Winston Forward (Bloomfield, NJ)- Winston has live legs and a basketball game oozing with potential. He continues to take care of business in the paint but now is more willing to show off his perimeter skills. He isn’t afraid to let a jumper go or attack off dribble.

Tyrek Chambers Forward (Brooklyn, NY)- Chambers will be listed as a guard shortly. He played with the instincts of a true floor general but has the strength of a forward. His all around ability is something that will make his game relevant for a time to come.

Nazreon Reid Forward (Asbury Park, NJ)- The big prospect once again showed why he’s one of the best in the country. He’s long and wiry but does more than just play inside. He’s developing a crossover dribble which is a scary thought. Get used to seeing his name on this site.

Jamal Whittlesey Forward (Wilmington, DE)- Big Jamal gave a crowd a treat by playing the guard role on numerous occasions. When he wasn’t toying on the perimeter he was backing down defenders in the paint. He definitely takes up a lot of space in the paint.

Chris Kropper Forward (Wilmington, DE)- Kropper represented Delaware well. He finished well on the break and played along the baseline. He’s going to be tough to handle on the circuit next season.

Atiba Taylor Guard (Spring Valley, NY)- Taylor is one of the smoothest guards in the country. His command of the game is evident and stock should rise as he gets older. This kid has some special tools.

J.E.M. All Star Classic 5th Grade Challenge Recap: Orange Team Prevails

Mark Bradshaw MVP

Mark Bradshaw scored 18 points to lead the Orange Team over the Blue Team 66-59 to win the J.E.M. All Star Classic 5th Grade Challenge. AJ Hoggard led the way for the Blue Team with 13 points.

MVP

Mark Bradshaw Guard (Chester, PA)- Bradshaw provided the scoring punch for the Orange Team. The southpaw dominated the competition in transition while finishing off plays. He also had the 3 ball dropping from behind the line. This kid is a true scoring machine.

Top Performers

Jalen Gaffney Guard (Columbus, NJ)- The POY showed why he earned the award. He dazzled the crowd with his all around game including superb court vision. This kid seems to look better each time I watch him rock. His feel for the game is tremendous especially for a player of his age.

Jordan McKoy Guard (Westwood, NJ)- “The Real” McKoy was very aggressive on Saturday and when he plays like that he’s very difficult to contain. His smoothness is obvious and his size is a constant problem for opponents. This kid might be a budding star soon.

Anthony Hoggard Guard (Coatesville, PA)- This pg has the flair for the dramatic and court vision some youngsters dream of. He scored the rock but also kept teammates very happy with slick dimes. Hoggard impacts the game in so many ways; he’s truly a joy to watch.

Fahmir Ali Guard (Wilmington, DE)- Ali arrived late to the game but didn’t waste any time getting busy. He was deadly from behind the arc ( 5 treys) while helping the Orange squad stretch the lead out. I can’t wait to see him in action next season.

Justice Ellison Guard (Springfield, VA)- All Star games are right up this kids alley. His dribble drive game was on full display and he either finished plays with buckets or a nice pass. I’m happy we have 3 more seasons to watch him play.

Terrence Williams Forward (Clinton, MD)- Williams showed big time versatility in this game. The nimble forward grabbed several rebounds and pushed the rock up the floor on his own. His ball handling was something to watch and should benefit his game later on.

Jaheim Tanksley Guard (Edison, NJ)- The kid with the neon sneakers came to life in the second half. He’s very crafty with an array of dribble moves. He enjoys breaking down defenders and shooting long treys. All eyes will be on him next season.

John Wilson Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Wilson used this stage to show he’s a all around player. His on the ball defense was tremendous and he also showed that he’s a capable point guard. We expect a true break year for him next season. Stay tune as we bring you more player profiles from this event.

Hoop Group Future All American Camp Recap: Class Of 2017

Jamir Harris (Piscataway, NJ)

The Hoop Group Future All American Camp took place at Albright College in Pennsylvania and Basketball Spotlight made a brief stop. I took in some action Monday night before leaving early Tuesday morning with an illness. Here’s who impressed us in our short stay.

Top Performers Class of 2017

Jamir Harris Guard (Piscataway, NJ)- It’s been about a year since I’ve seen Harris. I heard about his dedication to the gym and I must say it has paid off. Harris is powerful enough to get rid of defenders with a strong step back and array of dribble moves. He shoots the ball well off the dribble, showed an improved handle and really explodes past defenders. Its official that he has reclassified into the Class of 2017. Therefore the rising 8th Graders need to beware because “The Terminator” is coming!

Devin Clyburn Forward (New York, NY)- I saw Clyburn’s name on a few ranking list so I was interested in his game. He seemed to dominant the inferior competition he faced by posting up deep in the lane and just powering up. He has a strong frame and was quick off the ground. I think he needs to put more interest into his perimeter game in case he has peaked in the growing department.

Jalen Gibbs Guard (La Plata, MD)- Gibbs has a flashy handle and tries to breakdown defenders each time down the floor. He shows good basketball instincts in of his feel for the game and making plays. As he matures he may understand that to pick his spot and go instead of doing so much with the pill. This kid does have some talent.

Malik Zachery Guard (Syracuse, NY)- Zachery donned the orange and blue to represent his home city. He prefers to pull up after creating space off the dribble. He does have point guard instincts and should impact the game better against good competition when his body fully develops. One of his best attributes is his tremendous range.

Ricardo Dominquez Guard (New York, NY)- Ricardo is a tough NY guard with solid moves and a lot of confidence on the floor. Like most Big Apple guards he likes to attack defenders but he didn’t get out of control with his actions. He’s very poised when it comes to making plays.
